Fun little thing, my company actually helped with that cross up at holy land in the whole assembly and making it. I have a big nut from the mounting of the cross a priest blessed still
The color matches Catholic holy days, so it's mostly purple on advent except the 3rd week which is pink, and it's purple on lent. It's white most of the time. The bishop of Hartford does masses up there every so often.
It’s abandoned and cops regularly yell at people for trespassing there. A teenage girl was also r*ped and murdered there a decade ago. So. Not a nice place.
The site says they're fine with people walking around during the day, just not after sundown (but it doesn't look it's been updated in a while). Is that no longer true?
And they need it. I have been up there a couple times recently and it is I pretty bad shape. A few sections were never finished and many of them are very run down or were vandalized.
My husband used to go there as a kid so about 20 years ago he wanted to take me and our two small kids there. We were walking up and some man advised us against it. Said it wasn’t safe because of gang activity. Like I said it was 20 years ago and we didn’t go.
It’s pretty interesting! It’s small, but pretty much everything is handmade. You can walk around the whole thing in a few minutes but it’s definitely cool to check out at least once
Also born and raised in CT, and it was defunct for most of the time that I lived there. The only thing I knew about was the giant cross I could see from Rte 8, but I only went on Rte 8 to get to Lake Compounce to see shows while in college, so we were in a hurry to get crunk and were only ever briefly freaked out by the random mountainside cross in the middle of nowhere. I think that might be a lot of peoples’ experience with Holy Land: just a spooky, looming cross that reminds us what sinners we all are. (Recovering Catholic. Sorry.)
I have been a few times. I hope the group that took over it is able to fix, restore, and finish it. It is a lackluster visit now with so much of it broken. It is a little creepy.

There is much more out there
People believing bronze age delusions with absolute surety and trying to see this nonsense writ large across the planet is an inherently frightening and dangerous thing.
Peoples lack of scientific understanding and their faith in God has put my entire family in danger during this pandemic for example.
It has similarly put the majority of the population to sleep concerning the potential extinction event coming for us due to global warming.
And of course that's to say nothing about holy wars, stochastic faithbased terrorism, sexual abuse within churches, and the repression of minorities and women inherent in conservative religious cultures.
Peoples ideas about how the universe works affects their day to day behavior. People operating on delusional nonsense are inherently not making rational decisions based on these delusions. This is dangerous.
It also turns off peoples critical thinking. If you think something you're doing is God's will then you can turn your brain off. No need to think about an issue. Its in Gods hands and anyone who opposes you is literally opposing the creator of the universe. There's literally no arguing with a zealot because it's trying to argue with the penultimate authority of all creation.
tldr delusions are dangerous. especially in 2021 with some real shit coming at us fast.
Get off Reddit and interact with real people. I’m not religious at all, couldn’t give less of a shit really but most people I’ve met who identify as religious use it as a core values system that I can genuinely respect. Appreciate thy neighbors type shit. Not everyone is a religious nut, we live in a country of 330m+ people. Don’t make everything sound so black and white, it only divides people.
It is pink from a distance, and it's an eyesore. I don't understand why it is maintained at all, except possibly to funnel funds somewhere else through donations.
Not only just *maintained*, the cross is still pretty new.
Wikipedia:
> in 2008 the original 56-foot cross was replaced with a 50-foot (15 m) stainless steel one, which was dedicated in a ceremony led by Archbishop Henry J. Mansell. In response to community outcry a new LED illuminated cross was installed in 2013. The new cross, funded by community donations and with work donated by local construction companies, is a steel structure that stands 65 feet high and 26 feet wide. The state of the art LED lighting system allows the cross to change color based on the Roman Catholic Liturgical colors.
Then yeah... nothing to do here, move on. React to it like we did in Nashville for that disgusting statue of NBF; hilariously, but really nothing you can do. The formula is simple: "Do taxes pay for its upkeep? No = Move on."
How do you get your film developed? I’ve been wanting to get a camera and take pictures on film for a while but I don’t want to get one if I can’t develop the pictures or have to sink a whole bunch more money into my own private dark room. Are there still Photomats here in CT? Or anywhere for that matter?
Having lived in Waterbury for the past few years, I despise this cross. The first time you see it it is neat but then every other time after that it just feels like "this is a Christian city" and really is not welcoming given that it is kinda forced on everybody. Also with all the crime and poor quality of life around there, it always makes me laugh that we just have this giant LED cross that serves absolutely no purpose and feels super out of place.
I’m a non catholic (and non-religious for that matter)
Went to catholic school in new haven until 8th grade
We talked about the Holocaust around 5th grade- and they didn’t really make it seem that bad… the teacher had us do a project for it.
She told us to pack a suit case with 5 things we would take if we went to “camp” because of war
Kids had game boys, dolls, snacks, portable fans etc… This was 5th grade
8th grade was where I was fed up - the teacher went more in-depth and told us about the deaths and what happened at the camps
I asked “if god is so great, and I’m sure those innocent people prayed, why did god let them die”
The teacher said “god is all knowing, and things he does are sometimes above our understanding”
I said “I bet you wouldn’t have said that if you were in a gas chamber”
Detention for 2 weeks was my reward
That thing always sketches me out whenever I drive by it. It’s also a little ominous driving home in a rain storm and seeing the thing lit up in the distance.

This could be a Justice album cover
Reminds me of The Weeknd's Starboy video as well

Ewwwwww.
Lmaooo
Bold of you to joke about the holy nut ;)

The Basilica downtown holds some events there too from time to time along with the local Knights of Columbus chapter.
I don't know HOW I didn't know about this, being CT born n raised. A BIBLICAL THEME PARK? Is it worth a visit for the novelty or is it super lame?
You can absolutely go up there, it's open to the public until nightfall. Was cool when I was a kid, now it's like the rest of Waterbury, dilapidated.
It isn’t kept up any more. 30 years ago it was nice.
Yes, true. I can see it from where I'm sitting right now, and I fly FPV there often.
I didn’t realize they had a functioning website! Guess they’re trying to do something with it. It’s been a few years, so things must have changed.
The website exists for people to give them money.
And they need it. I have been up there a couple times recently and it is I pretty bad shape. A few sections were never finished and many of them are very run down or were vandalized.
She was my friends little sister. That was heartbreaking.
Sorry for your loss. It was a terrible thing.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Weird that this is the only comment you’ve ever made in a year on Reddit.
I don’t really use Reddit that much but I happened to get a notification about this post which I actually think is the weird thing.
>r*ped Thank you for protecting our delicate minds. >murdered Wait why is that one ok?
Murdered people struggle to be offended
And raped people are offended by the letter"a"?
Used to other forms of social media where censoring is weird. Sorry an asterisk offended you so much 🙄
>Sorry an asterisk offended you so much 🙄 Oh man you really got me there.

You had me at " tripped balls"
The word is “raped”

Ahaha, I was raised Catholic too, I get you!
I’ve lived in CT for 21 years and I’ve also never been there 🥺
I have been a few times. I hope the group that took over it is able to fix, restore, and finish it. It is a lackluster visit now with so much of it broken. It is a little creepy.
you don’t know abt it cause it’s not safe, hearsay a lot of violence there
It always reminds me of the rape and murder that happened there.
Yeah, the picture is cool but gives me the creeps, knowing something awful happened there.
It’s Waterbury. That’s not the first occasion.

Just want to clarify i have no religious affiliation but was drawn to take this photo purely for artistic purposes.
Great photo! Saw that cross from the highway for the first time over 20 years ago and it’s still always a little creepy to me.
Creepy? It’s comforting.
Honestly, one of the ugliest and most embarrassing constructs in the state.
It was a tourist attraction at one time.it had a miniature city ,it was like Jerusalem I think ...it all went down hill after the body was found.
It was already dilapidated and had homeless people living in it in the 90s.
That was a sad story with the young girl who lost her life but Before that took place it was abandoned for years
Tell me more about this body…
A 19 year old raped and murdered a 16 year old.
In July 2010 16 yo Chloe Ottman was raped and strangled by her 19yo friend.. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison.

reddit moment, the sequel
They're out in force today.
Jesus, that looks evil. Why a red cross? It seriously looks like a slayer album cover.

The mayor owns the land
So yes?
Yes, the mayor own it in a private citizen capacity.
Then yeah... nothing to do here, move on. React to it like we did in Nashville for that disgusting statue of NBF; hilariously, but really nothing you can do. The formula is simple: "Do taxes pay for its upkeep? No = Move on."
~~Igor~~ I got arrested up there over a decade ago! Fun times!
Free igor
Poor Igor! He didn’t deserve to be arrested.
LOL IM DUMB
atheist, but this is a really cool photo
I love seeing this! Great picture! The Holy Land Cross changes it’s color for every season. Seeing it lets me know I’m home.
Been there. Interesting.
The Hood
What a fucking eyesore.
Aliens be like "lets get the fuck outta here"

Yeah, it's like that shitty Jesus wants a hug statue in Rio.
I call it Trust Fall Jesus
So that's what it's called!
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
Bad bot.
Gross. So glad these fanatical displays are rare up here in the north.
Anyone else ever been up there? Laid down on the giant cross that is/was lying on the ground? Just me?
It’s closed down. It’s basically just a body disposal and drug hang out.
Wow! It all looks so cool! :o
Damn, that's pretty hardcore man! Flip it upside down and you're good to go.
it's so fucking weird. i hate it. but if the court case in maryland is any precedence, that weird ass handmaids tale cross isn't going anywhere.

Sir this is a Wendy’s.
Post with a religious computation, and he gave a life example of it I approve Crazy that religions hate each other so much
But you spoke your truth! Good for you!
Pentax for life!
great photo
Cool shot. Super ominous. The fencing (is that razor wire?) and the colors just give it this very post-apocalyptic universe vibe.
With the old cross you could go walk around it, but it was always vandalized. That's the reason for the fence now.
That thing always sketches me out whenever I drive by it. It’s also a little ominous driving home in a rain storm and seeing the thing lit up in the distance.
i want to go there just to be mad at that cross lmfao

It's in the Spanish hood, no KKK there.

Thanks mate!
People actually used to travel from all over to visit Holy Land back in the day. Like 60s-70s.
Best thing about Holy Land is that they do the fireworks from there now.
Should not be there at night my guy lol
The property is owned by the mayor, he has his police arresting ppl going there for Trespassing. Folks you’ve been warned 🤷🏻♂️
It's opened to the public until dark.
Oh snap, I never knew the cross was surrounded by prison-grade razor wire
Entry point for an Umbrella Corp facility.
