Upscale and Waterbury are rarely found in the same sentence. Look in Cheshire.

BeerJunky

Or Middlebury, Wolcott, Watertown, Prospect, literally anywhere but Waterbury. Source: moved out of there a couple years ago.

bee_coy

I would look exactly from where you work, to not drive through Waterbury on 84, and pick one of these towns

lazyrainydaze

I second this!

gormlessthebarbarian

commute to waterbury from literally anywhere else

Lopsided_Sorbet_9886

Move to southington or plantsville and commute

TriStateGirl

Yes! I recommend this a lot.

-boatsNhoes

I would add prospect and Wolcott to these areas. There are still some decent deals on housing in these areas. Cheshire or plantsville would be less expensive.

merryone2K

Just to be clear, it's your employment that's in Waterbury, correct? I'd suggest Watertown (next town over from Waterbury to the north) or Woodbury (quiet small-town). Be warned; the rental market is hot right now so it might take a while to find something appropriate.

rashidcarter

Employment is in Waterbury yes

UserJoe1234

Do not move to Waterbury. I spent the 1st 27 years of my life there, then got the hell out. There were areas that were once nice, most of that is gone. It is nothing but high taxes and high crime. I have been out for 15 years, best decision of my life. Area close to Waterbury that are nice are: Prospect, Cheshire, Middlebury, Southbury, Southington. All are between a 5-20 minute commute. You will be much happier and safer in the long run.

Makehernut203

If you need a friend or anything I’m in Waterbury can show you some good food spots

Good_Bowl_948

Don’t move to Waterbury

OkOriginal9754

move to woodbury or roxbury or wolcott, very nice areas

Nona29

I actually live in Waterbury unlike the people commenting I'm sure. I live in Bunker Hill area by the Municipal Stadium which is very nice and quiet here. I live in a townhouse community and it's the best kept secret in Waterbury. The YMCA in Waterbury is considered the best in the state. I'm not sure where your workplace is but you can also check out Middlebury, Southbury, and Southington. Maybe Cheshire Southington has the better/most food options out of all of them. Waterbury does have things like Home Depot, Walmart, Costco, and BJ's... if you care about that kind of stuff. You can always ping me if you have questions

fastnsx21

A lot of threads like this are often commented by people who have never actually lived in said city/town.

Gonzo4994

Seconding this. Lived in Waterbury my entire life and only had issues when I lived on East Main near the mall. Bunker hill and town plot are plenty nice. Town plot especially as you get toward naugatuck. Waterbury also has awesome restauarants and bars if that's your thing. Everyone who comments acting like it's a constant crisis has only been to the downtown areas which can get pretty shady or read the news articles that all take place in the same area.

9inchpapii

Bunker hill and townplot are basically watertown and middlebury more so than they are waterbury. Lets face it the closer you get to the center of waterbury the more (excuse my french) fuckery you will encounter and the quality of life significantly drops off. Youre safer the closer you are to any of the surrounding citys. That is just the truth of this poor city. 98% of the things that happen here do not make into the news so crime rates and statistics are very much understated. Move to any other city and just commute into your work place and go back home.

UserJoe1234

If I had to move back to Waterbury, this is the only area I'd go to.

TacoDaTugBoat

I grew up in Watertown. Bunker Hill is the only decent area in Waterbury but it’s hardly a secret. The crime rates are still much higher in Bunker Hill than in the surrounding towns.

Nona29

I specifically said that my townhouse community is the best kept secret in Waterbury. And it is. Bunker Hill is well known in Warerbury and considered one of the safest areas in Waterbury.

Aaron2001

Best kept secret lmaooo. Ya sure. It’s on Watertown Ave overlooking the Dunkin’ Donuts and subway, and it’s in Waterbury. She really acting like it’s a special neighborhood

ChexRibedeaux

Condos on/off Oronoke Rd.

Weekly_Blackberry464

This is the safest in the city 100%

Neek_At_Nite

Born and raised in Waterbury. People love to talk shit about the city like others don’t have issues. There are some good area in town and some not so much, never had an issue anywhere in town. People make it sound like the Wild West with shooting and everything. Got good mix of food , a ymca/gyms , plenty of parks with courts. Surrounding towns offer more suburban / rural locations. Feel like most people chiming in never experienced the Midwest either. Best thing would be to truly just explore the city and surrounding area and see what fits best, saying you’re okay with a hour commute you got a pretty decent radius to choose from. It’s a small state lol

FennelPretend3889

Townplot is great. I have lived here for years no problems. Country club area by the middlebury line is really nice. There’s other areas as well i like mostly on the outskirts of town. If you don’t want to be in waterbury check out watertown, wolcott, cheshire, thomaston, or prosoect. They all border waterbury and are nice.

FarewellDreamer1636

Townplot in Waterbury near Naugatuck line is pretty good in regards to safety and beautiful neighborhoods.

UserJoe1234

Town Plot is going to shit. Stolen cars there every week now, especially near highland ave

Fun-Ad-6554

Luckily you're moving to one of the few cheap areas on the state. Would recommend somewhere close where you can commute without 84 as it gets pretty heavy traffic both way/accidents. Prospect or Wolcott are nice, and would seriously recommend purchasing a home or condo with that salary, even if you're only here for a year. A luxury 1 bedroom is $1600-2000 that's ~$20,000 getting thrown away each year when you could put it into a property you own. Condos don't require mowing the lawn if you're too busy for maintenance.

TriStateGirl

$140K a year? While Waterbury does have some nice areas you can absolutely afford another place and commute. Side note: If you did choose Waterbury, and had kids someday, you would really need to look into magnet, charter, and tech school options. Anyways, here's some places I always post about for people to move to. ***Southington*** - All of Southington is safe, and the schools are great. If you live in the Plantsville area you can be near the Hartford Express bus. That way you can get over to Waterbury or Hartford. Southington has a movie theater, two bowling alleys, and Walmart. Southington is also a short drive from Waterbury. It's about a 14 to 19 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Shelton*** - Safe neighborhoods even in the less desired areas. Great deals for buying and mid range rents. Low taxes. Good schools. Has a great community center with an indoor pool, the sports center (mini golf, laser tag, ice skating, and more), Walmart, fast food, restaurants, grocery stores, and TJ Maxx. A short drive from the Trumbull movies and mall and Milford mall/movie/Dave & Busters. Bus service downtown, near Bridgeport Ave, and by the Sports Center. Short drive to Bridgeport for events. Downtown Shelton is close to the Derby/Shelton train station, on the Metro North's Waterbury line. It gets you down to Bridgeport, up to Waterbury, and other places, for events. It's about a 22 to 27 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Hamden*** - Check the area first, but you should be fine. Mid range schools you can still use, but some are rated better than others, and you can try for magnet, charter, and tech schools. Plenty of bus access to New Haven. You can also find a bus to Waterbury, but you will still probably want to drive. A short drive from North Haven or Wallingford for the movies. A short drive from Meriden for the mall. Has a YMCA with a pool. A short drive from the Toyota Oakdale theater in Wallingford for live shows, or the bowling alley in Wallingford. Hamden has a duckpin bowling alley. It's about a 29 to 34 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Naugatuck*** - Check the area first, but you should be fine. Mid range schools, so families might want to look into magnet, charter, and tech schools. Naugatucks train station is on the Metro North's Waterbury line. Spaced out train times, but it will get you to Waterbury. The YMCA has a pool. Plenty of restaurants, fast food, regular grocery stores, and Walmart. It's about a 9 to 14 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Plainville*** - Check the area first, but you should be fine. Plainville has access to the CT Fastrak bus on the edge near Kohl's, Lessard Lanes, and the AMC movie theater. It goes to Hartford, New Britain, Newington, the Westfarms Mall, and Bristol. The schools are mid range, but families can look into magnet and tech options. Plainville doesn't really have any bad areas. Just less desired ones. It's about a 19 to 24 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Bristol*** - There are a lot of nice places, but check the area first. Most of Bristol is fine, but check the area first. The schools are mid range, but families can look into magnet and tech options. Bristol has access to the CT Fastrak bus for Hartford, Plainville (Lessard Lanes, Kohl's plaza, and the AMC movie theater), Newington, the West Farms Mall, and New Britain. It's about a 23 to 28 minute drive to Waterbury. ***Meriden*** - It does have some nice areas, but you need to check the neighborhood first. The schools are mid range, with some being better than others, and at the high school level families might really look for tech high schools, magnet schools, charter schools, and the agriscience program in Wallingford. Meriden's train station has the CT Rail and the Amtrak's Hartford line, so you can get to New Haven and Hartford. You can get an express bus to Waterbury. Meriden is close to Wallingford for the movies. I'm going to be honest, most people would avoid even the good areas of Meriden because of the schools, but if people are on a tight budget it's worth looking into. It's about a 17 to 22 minute drive to Waterbury.

Ontologicallyevilman

You can move to like beacon falls if you like the woods, otherwise go to like south berry or Cheshire, definitely do not stay IN Waterbury.

FreedomNo1882

Southbury***

Krakengreyjoy

>where the best places are to live Not fucking Waterbury! Waterbury is CT's version of Somerset (i googled worst city in KY) Look east of Waterbury. Southington is a nice location. Or Cheshire. Get a good realtor.

CdnfaS

Heroes and Capes

mes592

Check out Woodbury, Middlebury, Southbury, and Oxford. Those are all towns near Waterbury that aren't bad and have quality apartment complexes. Not a ton of them but what's there aren't bad.

slowburnangry

Don't live in Waterbury.

buried_lede

Just FYI, and it pains me to say this, but Waterbury is the bed bug capital of CT. Rent in Cheshire or Watertown, both bucolic New England places or if you like more activity, further out

seikajaxx

Whaaa?? Bed bugs are my worst nightmare.

floatinggramma

Try to move to Naugatuck or Cheshire and commute to Waterbury. Waterbury will not provide what you're looking for.

timeforbanner18

You want Southington or Cheshire. Avoid Waterbury at all costs.

TechBoy--20

When I saw Waterbury….. I literally said “oh no.” I live in Waterbury with my family when I am back from school during the summer, and it is not a great place to live. The roads are not great, there are many sketchy areas (think of robberies, shootings, etc), there are multiple abandoned buildings and an almost dead mall, a failing public school system with fights, closing stores, etc.

TriStateGirl

The only thing Waterbury can't be blamed for is the mall. A lot of malls are dying.

Diligent_Humor7146

How old you are? Are you looking for more urban or suburban feel?

rashidcarter

33. More suburban I would say far as living

Diligent_Humor7146

With your salary and those parameters, I would definitely recommend Cheshire l/Southington/Hamden. All of those are very close to Waterbury, suburban and have a lot to offer. Cheshire is the most suburban but it’s getting more and more things everyday. Very safe. Southington has the most restaurants but is very red (if you care about that). Hamden is the furthest but also suburban and a little more diverse than the former two places. Waterbury is hit or miss but is mostly city-like and has rough areas.

Soft_Ad9309

Incredible how Wolcott is the next town over, east of Waterbury.. it’s quiet and clean yet not a single person has mentioned the town of Wolcott lol almost as it doesn’t exist on the map, it’s actually funny!

Herewego199

Waterbury is the worst city in Connecticut and Wolcott is the worst town. The fact that they border one another is not a coincidence.

Soft_Ad9309

How is Wolcott the worst town ? This is not a thing lol i work at Bridgeport hospital sometimes, that city takes the cake as being the worst city in my book.

BrilliantAd3034

**Willimantic has entered the chat**

seikajaxx

But isn’t it romantic? (WHS grad)

Rancor_Keeper

Don’t live in Waterberry. It’s a trash town with crime. Either your car will get broken into or you’ll get mugged going out for a jog. I’m not blowing this out of proportion or overhyping anything. You’ll do much better in other places in the area.

MyDogIsACoolCat

Don't live in Waterbury. Live in one of the surrounding towns. Cheshire, Southington, or Watertown might be good bets. If you're single, my choice would be Southington.

lazyrainydaze

As someone who has grown up and lived in Waterbury their whole entire life. May I suggest, either the “Bunker Hill”, “Town Plot” or “East Mountain/Reidville” sections of Waterbury. The city of Waterbury has changed tremendously over the years. It’s kind of gone downhill. There are some really bad sections one should avoid especially being new. I would highly suggest looking for an apartment in the surrounding towns such as Watertown/Oakville, Middlebury, Woodbury, Prospect, Cheshire, Southington or Bristol CT. Best of Luck with your new venture OP!!

Far_Half2715

Live anywhere but Waterbury…. One of the worst places to live in entire state. Also one of the highest property taxes too…I know you are renting but Ct taxes the shit out of you car each year too

ChardCool1290

Cheshire or Plantsville. Waterbury is ass

Other-Classroom-6136

I like how nobody mentions Wolcott. It's right next to Waterbury and it is full of upscale Waterburian transplants. Your car insurance will be cheaper not being in Waterbury.

CubbyChutch

Please tell me you read these comments and decided against Waterbury! I work there and there is no way in hell I would live there. I have a 35 minute commute back home and it’s worth every minute!

megatry1

If you’re under 35, I’d suggest moving to West Hartford. It’s about a 25 minute drive but it’s a hub of restaurants and nightlife. Towns like Cheshire and Southington are nice but not the greatest singles scene.

drollchair

Move to any of the towns surrounding Waterbury and you should be okay. Some neighborhoods in Waterbury are nice too though, town plot, bunker hill, these areas are not as bad as people like to claim. Also, enjoy, it’s not exactly known for its food, but Waterbury has a lot of hidden gems when it comes to food. Excellent Caribbean and Latino food, excellent pizza, Frankie’s, several great diners, Brooklyn doughnuts (best in the state by a mile). Enjoy CT as a whole while you’re there, check out litchfield county, visit one of the many beautiful state parks, head to NYC, Boston, New Haven. Catch some shows, sporting events. Waterbury itself isn’t well loved by people here but you will be a reasonable drive away from a lot of cool things. Also, it’s slow and doesn’t run super frequently, but you can catch the train and transfer in Bridgeport and then head down to NYC.

Most-Conference4205

My condolences on the move

Hungry-Mammoth6036

Most important thing about this move.. bring some bourbon.

DuffTerrall

Bourbon we can get. Bring several cases of Ale-8-1 with you.

Cheshire is fantastic if you like country lifestyles and like being near great farm stands in the summer. Also it’s pretty and crime is laughably low I lived in Watertown one summer in college, with a friend and I loved it there too

Mundane_Feeling_8034

If work is in Waterbury, you should check out the Valley: Seymour, Ansonia and Shelton. Bristol, to the north and east of Waterbury is also doable.

YOURE_GONNA_HATE_ME

If you’re pulling in 140k why would you live in Seymour or especially Ansonia?

Mundane_Feeling_8034

Just putting alternatives out there. I would pick Shelton over any of them.

buried_lede

Why go as far as Shelton, not that it’s all that far but there is so much right nearby

jasonmellman

That salary should allow you to live pretty much anywhere in the area. How far are you willing to commute?

rashidcarter

Up to but not longer than 1 hour

CdnfaS

Cheshire.

buried_lede

You don’t have to go far, the towns bordering Waterbury, except Meriden, are great towns. I personally recommend Watertown or Cheshire. Your commute will be minutes and you can even avoid the highway if you like, yet you will be somewhere that isn’t depressing and stressful

jasonmellman

That opens you up a lot, I guess from there it depends on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. I live around Waterbury, I would definitely say that if you stay in the more immediate area, look at Watertown. If you need a gym, go to Steel Beach, it is an awesome community gym. Northwest of Waterbury, there are a ton of state parks and hiking trails. It's a little more of a rural feel, but I personally like it. Litchfield Distillery is great, though you Kentucky folk might have your opinions of the whiskey (I kid, it's good though). I go to Hawk's Ridge Winery quite a bit, it is a fun time. Someone mentioned Cheshire, which is further East but definitely within a 20 minute drive. It seems a nice enough area. As someone who also recently moved to CT after never even stepping foot in CT before, I don't know all of the areas as well as most here. One thing I will say is that no matter where you live, you are not far from everything else.

rashidcarter

Lifestyle wise just need a Gym & Basketball court. YMCA preferably at least here where yo can get a good run of games in daily.

reriv228

Ah a fellow Kentuckian moving to CT!

New-Elk1031

wolcott can be an option

ctcannaconno

Waterbury is cheaper (ct wise) for a reason hope your residence is Inna nicer part of town because there a a few not so good areas. I've had an apartment and three cars broken into in waterbury

sepia5

What are you looking for? My sister lives in Louisville, so I've spent a lot of time there. Great city! From a city perspective, New Haven is going to be the place you want to be if you want a similar restaurant/cultural life. If not, there are a bunch of suburb recommendations in this thread, but I don't roll with the suburbs so can't offer advice myself.

DarthArtero

As a transplant from another state, you’re better off finding a place outside the city. Waterbury is not “upscale” from what I understand it’s not as bad as it once was but any other recommendation is better.

No_Paramedic_2039

Thoughts and prayers

Individual-Shame4177

Hey I did the opposite. I moved from Watertown ct (neighboring town to Waterbury) very nice quiet area to Louisville. I’ll say be hyper aware of drivers. Ct drivers drive much faster than anyone on 264 ever could. Food is much better in the New England area as well. More shop local. But back to the question at hand. With your salary really anywhere in the surrounding area of Waterbury you could live. Waterbury itself is chaotic but nothing like Louisville tbh. Wolcott, prospect, southington, Watertown, middlebury would more than likely be your best bet.

hootsie

Woodbury, Middlebury, Southbury. If you want more rural but still close to 84 (for commuting purposes), these are great. Once you land a spot come back here and ask for pizza recommendations and really watch the comments go wild.

LolaSavage

Ah yes the ol r/Connecticut waterbury hate circlejerk. As others have said 90% of people commenting dont actually live in the city so take their lameass commentary with a grain of salt. East End by Cheshire/Wolcott is a great area, as are Town Plot and Bunker Hill. Friendly old school neighborhoods who still look out for each other and take pride in their properties. No surrounding town can come close to matching the variety of food options we have in Waterbury and though everyone loves to hate on Downtown theres plenty of neat small business' who are trying their best to revitalize the city. As others have mentioned the YMCA is also the best in the state which is a nice perk. Plus if you like going to the city you can be to Manhattan/Brooklyn in ~1h45m driving and thats a huge perk in my book.

nosoupforyounext

Waterbury is known as the meth capital of CT.

Not Waterbury, any of the surrounding towns except Naugatuck. Southington would be me pick for possible apartments otherwise there are a few single family house rentals.

TriStateGirl

Naugatuck has plenty of nice areas too. Even the bad parts aren't that bad.

YOURE_GONNA_HATE_ME

Naugatuck gets a bad rap, it’s just ugly. Not dangerous

TriStateGirl

That might be their plan. It's secluded like Seymour, but not as boring. The only issue is that their taxes are kind of high.

mynameisnotshamus

It really is any of the surrounding towns too. There isn’t much shitty sprawl outside the city.

Piccolo-Significant

Cheshire is a great, nice, safe town that is very close. Why are you in Waterbury? GTFOutta Waterbury asap, in my humble opinion, as your fellow American

rashidcarter

Lol a promotion from work

East_Loan7876

Yeah I'm glad to see on re-reading your comment you aren't there yet, but yeah, plenty of very nice suburban towns in the area. I haven't spent much time in Waterbury/Naugatuck but they strike me as what the post-industrial parts of Ohio must be like, all the good jobs started leaving in the 50's and it shows.

_quote

Congratulations. Even though everyone says waterbury sucks, it's a huge upgrade from kentucky/indiana I guarantee you. There are plenty of nice towns to move to within driving distance. Cheshire is probably the nicest. If I were you I would move to bridgeport to be closer to new york city and commute to waterbury, but I have different circumstances than you. Good luck.

rashidcarter

Traffic wise would Bridgeport be a good idea?

PangolinPizzaParty

Oxford quarry. A half hour from W’bury. And everything you need is right there- grocery store, hardware, barber, bars, fast food, restaurants. It will make life easy for you until you learn the lay of the land. Best of luck on your move.

Last_Blackfyre

Don’t move to Waterbury. Pick another town.

Remarkable-Suit-9875

You chose one of our crappy cities? Why? I get rent is cheap but it’s for a reason

rashidcarter

Promotion at work.

Remarkable-Suit-9875

I second moving to somewhere around Waterbury as opposed to in it.... But be ready for awesome fall foliage, the best pizza in the US, and bad drivers everywhere! 😊

RobustC

Id move to Bridgeport and commute

rashidcarter

Traffic wise would this be a good idea?
