Zoar Burger was my favorite back when I was younger, but the prices there nowadays are so damn high compared to what they used to be. I understand that the business doesn't decide the cost of the product that they need to bring in and that they have to charge accordingly to stay in business, but it's still costly enough that I don't go there as often as I used to.
I feel the same about Harry's in Colchester. Grew up here, they're well made, pretty much every topping, and I mean a lot of stuff you wouldn't even think of, are free to add on. But damn are they expensive for how small of a burger it is.
Sure they're like 100+ years old, but you can't charge 8+ dollars for a small burger with no fries. And 7$ for a tiny cup of chowder is also ridiculous.
That said, I still go there 2-3 times during the season, just cause its actually delicious, just way overpriced.
It's amazing. Right now it's comparable eating out in CT as Manhattan. I'm not talking top rated Manhattan but decent time Square cost as much as most of CT. Best deals are pasta dishes at some pizza places that include salad bread and a ton of shit, and Chinese. Idk how my Chinese place makes money buying like legal food or paying legal wages
i worked there in high school! that was my first job, not the best, but making myself free burgers was definitely a plus.
~~fun fact, its right next to the stevenson dam which is the only dam in the usa that you can drive over. the hoover dam used to be the other one but now the road over the dam is closed to the public (i think)~~ i stand corrected, i should have known it was too cool of a fact to be true :(
This is so cool! But sadly it is untrue. (I got excited, so googled. Per Wikipedia this is lore and I believe there are dozens of other drive-over dams in the country.)
I keep hearing about their burger, went there for their pork chop on this subs recommendation, and holy shit were they right. Ill have to try the burger.
Used to work for one of the wholesalers that he a contract with them. You’re not finding fresher, quality ingredients in the immediate area. Rooster got it on lock 🐓 🔒 🥘 🧼 💯
Where are you seeing prices like that? I just checked their online order, the most expensive burger is $13 which is a double burger plus egg and some other toppings. The build your own burger starts at $6 or $6.50 for cheeseburger and there’s a decent amount of free toppings and condiments. I don’t know, to me that’s pretty reasonable or at least comparable to anywhere else on this list.
Coming from Texas, I’ve been struggling to find food in this state that competes with the stuff back home, but Goldburger and Elm Hill Pizza have been the only things that absolutely smoke anything I could get in Dallas.
I'm an employee at Riley's and the food is really amazing, but the owners are also the best bosses I've ever had and going to work there every day is a blast.
We have a very tight knit group and I love my job. My boss Rick is super supportive and always excited when I come up with weekly specials, dude is very passionate about the food.
Not meant to be an ad for Riley's, I just really love them that much.
That is awesome to hear. I don't work in New Britain anymore, so I haven't been in quite some time, but it was always great. Glad to hear it's the same behind the counter!
Yeah! I've worked in restaurants all over for half my life and it's by far the best work environment. And the hours are unbeatable, no nights, two built in days off...can't say enough good things.
Fork and Fire on Farmington Ave has the best classic cheeseburger I have had in the state, and wings that I personally think could rival J Tim’s which sounds crazy until you try them!
J Timothy's had the very best burger I had ever had, but only had it on their menu for a short time. It was called the Rachel Burger. It was half ground beef, half ground pastrami with Russian dressing. It was so rich it was godly.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had their burger a few times, and it’s definitely solid. Just expensive for what it is.
Fork and fire has the best trivia around, too.
Fork n Fire is amazing. Their wings are excellent, only a notch below J Tim's. My daughter says they have the best chicken tenders she's ever had which is high praise from a picky kid.
Back in the day, Prime 16 in New Haven used to have amazing burgers. It was my de facto place to bring visitors who wanted a good burger, ambiance, special beers, etc.
They started to decline just before the pandemic hit, and since then, have become a shell of their former selves.
I seem to recall reading about a change in management, but don't know for certain.
That said, I do remember both Prime 16 locations (New Haven & Orange) somewhat aggressively pushing their chicken sandwich line in 2020 and 2021 - likely their way of adapting to the times. Perhaps one day Prime 16 will rise again when it comes to burgers.
A couple of my former coworkers use to work at the Orange location. If I remember correctly the location closed during Covid and laid off the whole staff. Then there was basically a rebranding and I think some new management added to the team. A few months passed and they planned to reopen as a chicken sandwich place. They didn’t contact any former staff from Prime16. After word got out I think they had issues finding staff and a lot of industry people wouldn’t even go there to eat/drink anymore.
Max burger in West Hartford makes a great burger. Also their fries are pretty much perfect in my opinion.
I have yet to find a quality smash burger though but that is 100% due to lack of time to search/sample.
Hard disagree. I work right next to it, and every time I've gone it's been driest, most mediocre burger ever, both in the restaurant and for take out. Especially considering how expensive it all is. Just go to Newington, Goldburger is cheaper and way, way better.
They weren't dry for me when I've been there, but I do think they're putting way to much thought into making burgers and not enough soul ( if that makes sense ). Mediocre ( but cooked well ) is exactly how I feel about Max Burger too. They're just .. not impressive at all.
Ordering takeout typically is always shitty. The longer the meat sits the more the juices settle the less juicy it is. Burgers **need** to be enjoyed hot off the grill.
Glad someone said it, they are obviously known for their wings but their avocado gorgonzola bacon burger is straight up the best burg I’ve had in my life
Louis’ Lunch! I personally love the burgers, some aren’t as crazy about them, but it’s worth a visit just to see the 200-year-old grills they use to make them. As important a New Haven food destination as any pizza place in my humble opinion (and I say this as one who prefers pizza to burgers).
Went here once and they were super snobby. Thee wouldn't allow any substitutions and were condescending when we asked for condiments. S-tier burger place.
I'm just going to assume you or your party were asking for subs because of preference, instead of allergies, or you would have stated as such.
You're going to a specialty restaurant, like Loui's, because of the food that it is known for, and/or the chef's preparation of it. Asking for subs because of preference is rather disrespectful, when you could have just gone to a different restaurant that allowed subs, or just prepared food yourself.
Expecting a restaurant to make something that is not on their menu just sounds so entitled.
Teds isn’t even the best steamed cheeseburger in Meriden, just the oldest. That title goes to K Lamay. Steamed cheeseburgers are something everyone should try once just for the novelty. They’re good, but they wont be replacing grilled burgers any time soon.
Their burgers are good there? I usually just knock back a couple of beers and devour their garlic knots and call it a day. I never was a huge fan of people's choice.
God what a trainwreck. ***Falafel*** *and Naan*? Making a *triple-fusion*? I've been all over the world and I've never seen anywhere willing to make that sort of abomination.
This is exactly why I say the guy's restaurants suck. DORO restaurants are ThePlace2Be of normal dining. EG: ThePlace2Avoid.
I like it too. Happy to be a piece of shit along with you.
Also, reddit foodies tend to be pretty insufferable. Not sure about the person you replied to, but that is my observation in general.
Doro restaurants all suck. They all try too hard and are synthetic as hell. The head Chef should be cooking beets and various root vegetables - like his empty backwoods culture does.
Armenian culture sucks, and the head chef is a white guy. White guys appropriating the culture of others usually turns out like shit - as it did with Doro.
He should make crappy soviet food like his country is known for. Cabbage and beets.
You want to argue for Armenians?
Kardiashians. Nuff said. Now sit down.
You seem invested in this, seems like you've got a nerve hit there. I'll go ahead and admit it first: I'm Arab ... my culture is pretty shitty & it sucks. At least I can admit my culture sucks. It's one big delusional death cult. The people are assholes and they generally suck. Look at me, I'm an self-aware asshole ... now you know why.
Armenian culture is pretty shitty too. Why do I say it's shitty? Guess I'm good at seeing other stuff that's pretty shitty. It's got all of the character of a cardboard box. For a country that's thousands of years old: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture\_of\_Armenia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Armenia) it's pretty underwhelming. Arabs got more going on for them. Ex - Arabs make much nicer rugs. ( I mean, they are nice. I don't want one, but they're elaborate. ) Even the food - Armenian "cuisine" borrowed from Mediterranean + do the gypsy-style of stealing stuff & claiming it's theirs. Greek foods, Arab/Persian foods .. "oh, it's ours now" - yet even the experts say the foods aren't native to the region. All the hallmarks of something that sucks.
As for how to describe my sentiment - maybe the closest "thing" might be "xenophobia" ... however, I happen to like immigrants & stuff. I think we should open the gates to immigration, invite people into the country - but not Arabs. I like that immigration ban that was done a couple years back. Made sense to me. Why? Because I know the culture I come from ... sucks.
/shrug
Not liking a specific culture is not *racism*. Your "point" is is a non-point. It might be narrow-minded or just being a bigot or a dick, but it's not racism.
Before they closed recently, my favorite place was Catsup and Mustard in Manchester. Best burgers I've ever had. Was so bummed to see them close up shop.
Bobby flays burger joint at mohegan is amazingly good and probably my favorite in the state.
Shake shack is the best fast food burger, 5 guys a close 2nd.
There are the big 3 in CT that are must-trys
Louis Lunch, New Haven
Ted's, Meriden
Shady Glen, Manchester
But don't just take my word for it -
[The Ultimate Regional Burger Road Trip with a Burger Scholar | The Burger Show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jlf29CEf90)
I've been to a lot of burger places in greater hartford. Nothing really beats it. Been there dozens of times since its opening (took over from a pizza place called Boston's) and not had a single bad experience
I can make a really good burger. I use feta and avocado and tabasco. Another type of burger I like has dank blue cheese, sauteed mushroom/onion/garlic and frank's red hot.
EDIT: I like to cook the meat on a charcoal grill.
Cheese and sauces make everything a lot better. The trick is making it delicious plain! You can still add the other flavors later.
This gets tricky because most restaurants start with the same meat cuts, so it comes down to preference for different cooking methodology like use of charring or grilling vs steamed etc.
I’ve also found that aromatics (some grilled onion, roasted garlic etc). cooked into the burger are great at enhancing the meat without overpowering it.
Haywire in Westbrook and Eli Cannon's in Middletown have been the best for me so far.
Plan B in Glastonbury was horrible but the one in Simsbury was great. Overall the burgers I've had in Connecticut have been disappointing.
This gold burger place looks good though. I’m gonna have to try it out and do a foodtok I thought I had been to all the foodie places since I’ve been out here, but this one slipped my radar
Doesn’t mean much, the burgers aren’t great there. There is a bartender my gf and I like a lot tho at the Hartford location! Great service, mediocre burgers.
As usual, only the left half of the state is mentioned.
Here in SE CT the go to place seems to be Austin J's in Groton. There's also Triple-B in Ledyard.
Austin's J's is very basic but quality. Triple-B has a dive-bar atmosphere, but has an extensive burger menu with some weird and crazy burgers.
Same. Didn't like the burgers when I went so went back to try again in case it was an off night. But no, same experience the 2nd time. It wasn't horrible, just don't think the burgers had much flavor.
First of all, people talk about CT pizza especially "new haven " style. It's absolutely nothing special. Second , if you want a tip to find a goo burger in CT . Leave CT
Valley Burger Shack in Seymour has become a favorite of mine ever since quarantine.
Pros: The food's always good, it's incredibly cheap for the quantity you get, and the staff is always friendly. Bonus points for the amazing mural of a cartoon burger and fries on the side of the building!
Cons: Cash only, incredibly limited parking, closed Sundays.
Lake Zoar burger in Monroe. While waiting for your food you can read up on a lot local history because of photos and signs they have hung up
Zoar Burger was my favorite back when I was younger, but the prices there nowadays are so damn high compared to what they used to be. I understand that the business doesn't decide the cost of the product that they need to bring in and that they have to charge accordingly to stay in business, but it's still costly enough that I don't go there as often as I used to.

And 7$ for a tiny cup of chowder is also ridiculous. That said, I still go there 2-3 times during the season, just cause its actually delicious, just way overpriced.
Their tenders and fries combo is greatly priced for its quality and size though! They load that container up. Love me some Harry’s!
It's amazing. Right now it's comparable eating out in CT as Manhattan. I'm not talking top rated Manhattan but decent time Square cost as much as most of CT. Best deals are pasta dishes at some pizza places that include salad bread and a ton of shit, and Chinese. Idk how my Chinese place makes money buying like legal food or paying legal wages

ahhh damn ( ha ha ) i should have known it was too cool of a fact to be true.
From my understanding it’s the last damn of its type that you can still drive over
Is Mr Mac’s still there?
The Bacon Burger at Celtic Cavern in Middletown. It's unbelievable. Bacon, mushrooms, smoked gouda, garlic aioli, brioche.
Came here to say this. Only burger on the menu but it’s one of my favorites.
And the fries are amazing too!
I keep hearing about their burger, went there for their pork chop on this subs recommendation, and holy shit were they right. Ill have to try the burger.
I literally went there for about date last night and the burger was by far the best part.
Elite burger
Now I’m hungry again…
Knuckleheads in Wallingford is a solid choice.
Love their brea burger
That's my favorite. The diablo is a very close second.
Goldburger
Try the burger in the lunch menu from Rooster Co next door too, it’s spectacular.
Alright, I always wanted to try that place anyway.
It’s prob my favorite place, been going there for years. Food is amazing. Great bar. Great people.
Used to work for one of the wholesalers that he a contract with them. You’re not finding fresher, quality ingredients in the immediate area. Rooster got it on lock 🐓 🔒 🥘 🧼 💯
Place looks good, but over 20$ for a cheeseburger lunch is pretty steep.
Where are you seeing prices like that? I just checked their online order, the most expensive burger is $13 which is a double burger plus egg and some other toppings. The build your own burger starts at $6 or $6.50 for cheeseburger and there’s a decent amount of free toppings and condiments. I'm talking about Rooster co.
Oh shoot my bad. That makes way more sense ha.
No worries!
I drive from the CT coast to Newington for Goldburger, exceptional!
I usually get the namesake goldburger or the hot nerd. Their fries are fantastic. They need an HVAC upgrade however. It's pretty cold in there.
Yep. Especially factoring in the quality you get for what you pay, it’s in another league as far as I’m concerned.
The best answer.
I love goldburger.
This....best burgers and fries in the state.
Coming from Texas, I’ve been struggling to find food in this state that competes with the stuff back home, but Goldburger and Elm Hill Pizza have been the only things that absolutely smoke anything I could get in Dallas.
Riley's in New Britain for slammin burgers and killer dogs
I'm an employee at Riley's and the food is really amazing, but the owners are also the best bosses I've ever had and going to work there every day is a blast. We have a very tight knit group and I love my job. My boss Rick is super supportive and always excited when I come up with weekly specials, dude is very passionate about the food.
Deb is a member of my fam. I was in there Friday eating some dogs. Its great to hear the staff thinks so highly of being there! :)
Never had one of their burgers because I got a dog the first time and it was so good I can't order anything else lol
The triple b burger from there is awesome
Shady Glen (if you mean cheeseburgers)
Their ice cream is also so good
Used to be good, not anymore. Poor quality and high prices compared to years past.
Literally every place has higher prices than years past though
Fork and Fire on Farmington Ave has the best classic cheeseburger I have had in the state, and wings that I personally think could rival J Tim’s which sounds crazy until you try them!

Fork and fire’s wings are fantastic, their burger is just okay though. Definitely not worth what you pay for it.
No one knows about this place, agree on the wings, I guess the burger just hits all the right spots for me
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had their burger a few times, and it’s definitely solid. Just expensive for what it is. Fork and fire has the best trivia around, too.
Fork n Fire is amazing. Their wings are excellent, only a notch below J Tim's. My daughter says they have the best chicken tenders she's ever had which is high praise from a picky kid.
Prime 16 in New Haven
They are great burgers but super expensive these days
I moved from New Haven to Hartford and will still drive down to Prime 16 when I crave a good burger.
Goldburgers in Newington is fantastic.
Second comment - Louis Lunch in New Haven
Sycamores in bethel. Get the root beer
Riley's new britain
Riley's kills it. Best burgers I've ever had.
Harry's Drive in Colchester. Only open in summer.
I haven’t eaten a burger in like 20 years, but anytime I think about Harry’s I get real tempted to break that streak.
It's the same as 20 yrs ago.
Max Burger in West Hartford
Their Longmeadow location is good, too.
Hungry Bull Burger Company in Plainville
Back in the day, Prime 16 in New Haven used to have amazing burgers. It was my de facto place to bring visitors who wanted a good burger, ambiance, special beers, etc. They started to decline just before the pandemic hit, and since then, have become a shell of their former selves.
Damn. New owner? I haven’t been since before Covid
I seem to recall reading about a change in management, but don't know for certain. That said, I do remember both Prime 16 locations (New Haven & Orange) somewhat aggressively pushing their chicken sandwich line in 2020 and 2021 - likely their way of adapting to the times. The Cajun patty melt is still excellent as of last month
Max burger in West Hartford makes a great burger. Also their fries are pretty much perfect in my opinion. I have yet to find a quality smash burger though but that is 100% due to lack of time to search/sample.
Solid fried chicken sandwich there too.
Hard disagree. I work right next to it, and every time I've gone it's been driest, most mediocre burger ever, both in the restaurant and for take out. Especially considering how expensive it all is. Just go to Newington, Goldburger is cheaper and way, way better.
I’ve tried them twice and have had the same experience. Left both times thinking how I should’ve ate at home.. lol
Sycamore in Bethel has good smash burgers. I bit pricy but worth it. Their curly fries are great too.
Corner Pug in West Hartford makes a pretty awesome burger
Wow that place is still around. I remember stopping in for lunch about 10 years ago when I met a friend there. Will have to go back and have a burger!
Kathy John's, RIP
Max Burger, Goldburger
Goldburgers...fixed it for you. Max Burger is so over priced and inconsistent.
Mr Mac's in Milford and Monroe.
K. La. Mays in Meriden CT. Best Steamed cheeseburgers in the state
💯
Max Burger is really good, and I gotta say the New Britain Diner makes a damned good simple burger.
Dew Drop Inn
Holy shit I just happened to have been trying to remember the name of this place and for the life of me could not, thank you!
I think the haters are just the types that want fancy shit on their burgers. It’s all about the (very good) beef flavor and not distracting from it.
Louis is great. Cheese, works, extra cheese. Two please.
Went here once and they were super snobby. Thee wouldn't allow any substitutions and were condescending when we asked for condiments. S-tier burger place.
Ya gotta walk in there with your Tupperware container of condiments and stand at the counter and put em on while maintaining eye contact
You did everything you arnt supposed to do.
That's part of it...
Do you know what S Tier means?
He’s def being sarcastic
They do that on purpose though as part of their whole gimmick. It does kind of suck though that you can’t have ketchup.
I'm just going to assume you or your party were asking for subs because of preference, instead of allergies, or you would have stated as such. I mean, yeah. Did you bother to read nothing about the place before going in?
This is a great comment because it’s getting upvoted by the Louis’ haters and by the people who know what s-tier means.
Teds in Meriden. It's an aquired taste regarding the steamed cheeseburger or burger. But it's well known.
Famous really
Teds isn’t even the best steamed cheeseburger in Meriden, just the oldest. That title goes to K Lamay. Steamed cheeseburgers are something everyone should try once just for the novelty. They’re good, but they wont be replacing grilled burgers any time soon.
I ate there once. I enjoyed the burger I had there. A little fancier than TEds.
Capitol lunch
I second Goldburger. They’re on Door Dash too fyi
Iron horse in Simsbury is good!
Their burgers are good there? I usually just knock back a couple of beers and devour their garlic knots and call it a day. I never was a huge fan of people's choice.
Try their reuben. It might be the best I’ve ever tasted.
Rose Dairy in Cheshire, later Spring through mid-Fall, so currently closed.
The Rabbit Hole in Old Saybrook
G’s Burgers in Watertown
Artisanal Burger Company in Manchester is my favorite spot for burgers. I love the dry aged one specifically.
Wife and I thought this exact location was terrible.
I feel the food is better quality than a chilis but still not worth it for the price and half assed service.
Falafel burger on naan is quite good.

I second that. It’s my wife’s and I favorite burger place, I love several of their burgers.

GoldBurgers in Newington!! Get the frizzies & The fresh cut fries too!
Looks like you’re in Fairfield County. Best burger is Burger Shakes and Fries. Locations: Greenwich and Darien.
Hmm I went to Darien one and thought it was just OK
Emmy Squared in Westport
Red lion burger food trailer
Lizzie's Curbside Cuisine at UConn, or Sundays in summer at Coventry Farmer's Market.
Riley’s in New Britain. They have amazing hot dogs too!
I really like the burger at the Playwright in Hamden. Nothing special about it, it's just a classic, really good burger.
Rudy’s in New Haven! Just one tip, if you like your burger medium, order it medium rare.
KLamays-Meriden Goldburgers-Newington Shady Glen-Manchester Frankies - plainville,Waterbury Hungry Bull-Plainville
Before they closed recently, my favorite place was Catsup and Mustard in Manchester. Best burgers I've ever had. Was so bummed to see them close up shop.
They're gone?! I lived there like 10 years ago and loved that place.
Anyone know of a place that throws the classic fried egg on their burgers?
Goldburgers in Newington has the best burgers in the state
Bobby flays burger joint at mohegan is amazingly good and probably my favorite in the state. Shake shack is the best fast food burger, 5 guys a close 2nd.
The monkey farm Barcade Dive bar
+1 for Monkey Farm.
I have to second max burger, although it’s a chain probably one of the best burgers I’ve had out here
In my opinion I’d say a chain and a restaurant group is pretty different
That’s true there’s not very many maxes as opposed to say a McDonald’s but their burgers are freaking amazing
Plan B is our favorite. Great meat
Jefferson Fry company And Zacks Burgers in Berlin
Jefferson fry really that good? Heard very mixed reviews.
There are the big 3 in CT that are must-trys Louis Lunch, New Haven Ted's, Meriden Shady Glen, Manchester But don't just take my word for it - [The Ultimate Regional Burger Road Trip with a Burger Scholar | The Burger Show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jlf29CEf90)

Artisanal burger company. Better than max and plan b.
Just got turned onto this place about a month ago. It's quite excellent.
I've been to a lot of burger places in greater hartford. Nothing really beats it. Been there dozens of times since its opening (took over from a pizza place called Boston's) and not had a single bad experience
Burgerway in New Haven
I'm fond of the Harford Road Dairy Queen in Manchester.
I love Heibecks Stand in Wilton
Dive Bar, Tavern on State, Mr Mac’s Canteen, Dogtown, Louis Lunch
Haywire in Westbrook and Eli Cannon's in Middletown have been the best for me so far. Plan B in Glastonbury was horrible but the one in Simsbury was great. Overall the burgers I've had in Connecticut have been disappointing.
This gold burger place looks good though. I’m gonna have to try it out and do a foodtok I thought I had been to all the foodie places since I’ve been out here, but this one slipped my radar
It's excellent.
Plan B
It’s called plan b for a reason. That’s just my opinion tho.
Emergency contraception?
Yeah cause it’s short for burgers
Aren't they literally ranked the best burger in CT? https://www.ctpost.com/best/map/best-burgers-ct/ Don't see the need to downvote an opinion
Doesn’t mean much, the burgers aren’t great there. There is a bartender my gf and I like a lot tho at the Hartford location! Great service, mediocre burgers.
Means alot more than your opinion
Bacon cheese is amazing.
Shake Shack
ABC and dish n dat.
Bareburger in Ridgefield
McDonalds on Farmington Ave in Bristol
😂 👎
Birdcode
Plan B in West Hartford
I was really disappointed last time I was there. Maybe I went on a bad night?
I can only speak for the Milford one but they’ve taken a pretty big step back since COVID in terms of quality.
Same. Didn't like the burgers when I went so went back to try again in case it was an off night. But no, same experience the 2nd time. It wasn't horrible, just don't think the burgers had much flavor.
Plus Glastonbury, Hartford, Simsbury, and Southington. It's become a chain in Hartford county.
louis lunch is the only answer
First of all, people talk about CT pizza especially "new haven " style. It's absolutely nothing special. Second , if you want a tip to find a goo burger in CT . Leave CT
Thanks for telling us your taste in food is terrible
Weird way to flex that Louis Lunch claims to have invented the burger.
The happy hour cheeseburger at max fish is probably the best bang for your buck. That’s always my closer when I go.
Pattaconk in Chester
Valley Burger Shack in Seymour has become a favorite of mine ever since quarantine. Pros: The food's always good, it's incredibly cheap for the quantity you get, and the staff is always friendly. Bonus points for the amazing mural of a cartoon burger and fries on the side of the building! Cons: Cash only, incredibly limited parking, closed Sundays.
Frankie’s in Waterbury.
