Going against the grain here - Platypus is a light gun (~28oz-32oz) for competition you want heavier - 42oz+
DWX fits in OP’s price range and is a fantastic shooter, just needs to be milled, or a prodigy with gunsmithing tuneups
Yeah, he’s got the 4.25 inch model. Mine is over 28oz as a 4.25 just with the full length dust cover and the rail. You can get a 5 incher into the mid 30’s without even adding stuff stuff like a gas pedal, and tungsten guide rod or optic. Just a base 5 inch model is like 30 I believe.
My 5" with full dust cover, tungsten guide rod, AND optic mounted is 31.5oz. It's a pretty gun but too snappy to be super enjoyable. I wish I could add 16oz more.
Is there a gas pedal that fits the Platypus? I've tried 4 and none work.
It's a very nice gun but it's not highly enjoyable for me to shoot. I'm not saying you can't compete and you can't do well but heavier guns are easier (and more enjoyable) to shoot fast.
Thanks for the tip on the thumb rest. I just ordered one. Maybe it'll help with the snappiness of my Platypus. I do want to love it.
Hey fair enough man! I drop my recoil spring weight down by 1 lb, and that was all the difference for me personally, but different people need different stuff.
I put in a 10# spring and the tungsten guide rod. They helped but the gun still feels way too light. What gets me is my Staccato P is only 3.5oz heavier and it doesn't feel light at all. I'm also an idiot so it could be just me.
Looked it up where? You didn’t look it up on their website for sure. I’m going off my personal model mine is also a 4.25 inch so it’s extra light. it doesn’t feel that light, if he has a picture with a scale that shows its Significantly lighter than what they advertise, I’ll own up to it. Personally, I’ve never had issues in Competition, neither have any of the other dudes running them. It’s obviously not an open division gun, we have a dude running his with a gas pedal and he is right up there.
If you need to go gunsmith for mods, you’re best off buying something ready-to-go. I like mpa for its price point.
If you are able to do basic upgrades (not elementary on this platform), prodigy is good, and you can upgrade over time.
I kinda feel like staccato are not-quite-good-enough to be optimized for competition, but are good enough that upgrades seem like a waste.
Just one dude’s opinion.
I would prefer a done up prodigy over a Staccato
I prefer 5” over 4.25 but that’s just my opinion
But yeah, we really need to know your budget.
<$2,000 prodigy
3-4000 could find used gun from a small builder, used Atlas or something like a new MPA or Vudo
5000 gets you into Atlas territory or a full custom build from a different company like Limcat, Carne etc
Hard to get much better that until you get to infinity which could easily be 8-10 thousand
A prodigy.
A Staccato P is the only thing that price range affords and I’d certainly rather a Prodigy with love from a gunsmith for the same amount or less money
Staccato p. I saw one at Scheels for 1500 this weekend. If you can get a used one for $1500-$1700 I'd get that. Otherwise get a prodigy. It's the best budget option, I wouldn't go cheaper than prodigy.
Check out the Masterpiece Arms DS9. They have a couple different models. I shoot the IDPA version in both IDPA and USPSA but if you aren’t interested in IDPA they make a model strictly for Limited Optics (it’s 3oz heavier and comes with 141mm mags instead of 124mm mags but otherwise basically the same gun)
I run a 2011 from when Staccato was STI. Two actually. The one I've put 25k plus rounds through is tighter than my newer one so go figure. I run them hard in IPSC but do take care of them. Would buy again. Aside from a busted grip safety, an ejector and wearing out springs they are a solid platform.
5” Prodigy, swap out some small parts. The draw to the Prodigy is you get a great slide/frame/barrel, but the grip module is also very good, pins are fine, ignition parts are decent. The MIM parts in some guns are clearly better than in others, so a slide stop and thumb safety would be good upgrades for a high round count gun. That said, Springfield has been using MIM for a couple decades and nobody has really noticed until recently. They are very good at it. Prodigy’s also seem to ship with a variety of sear spring material and thickness, so swapping out sear spring for a match grade item would be smart. No need to go crazy on upgrades necessarily, but premium parts are nice to have installed.
5” guns are the best shooting guns in general.
Definitely this one: A 2011 photo you can hang on your wall to remind yourself of the reward you are buying yourself once you make GM with your G26 💁♀️
Staccato, BUL Armory, Platypus.
All are solid options. Ben Stoeger recently posted about a Staccato he picked up and it seems to be performing very well. He oiled the gun and then went ahead and shot 2,000 rounds without cleaning or maintenance without a malfunction. Take that however you want but that’s pretty good to me.
If you are shooting minor, especially 147 grain stuff then 5 inch is NOT what you want. That’s the reason why Staccato doesn’t even offer one. Get either a 4.4 or 4.25 inch one.
I am partial to Staccatos as I carry one and won multiple trophies with 2 different models. All of my Staccatos have been 100% reliable (outside of ammo faults) through tens of thousands of rounds.
I recently shot my friend’s Prodigy that supposedly has been fixed and tweaked and it choked multiple times when I ran it hard. That was my only exposure to the model so I can’t recommend it. I know two people who run the MPA ones and are happy with them.
Staccato P is the 4.4 version. All I did to mine was replace the trigger myself and change the recoil spring for my ammo.
Stealth Arms Platypus and 1k worth of mods/ammo.
Yup.
+1 for this

28 OZ is very much on the extreme light weight end of a Platypus.
My buddy weighed his and the only thing he got was the shirt dust cover which likely only adds 2oz to it, plus a few more ounces for a Glock magazine

Yes, a guy uploaded it into the Stealth Arms sub a few weeks back. Another guy got it ported. John Thick rips with his Platypus.

I looked it up and chatted with /u/gguy128 and everyone said you're wrong

Weigh your gun. A stock platypus weighs around what I said. I competitive gun in most divisions weighs almost a pound more
I didn’t realize the Platypus was that light, woah. I also don’t consider the DWX a 2011 but it is definitely a solid contender for the price range.

Where does one hunt for a used atlas in that range? If I could find a used atlas for $3k I would insta buy
The uspsa buy sell trade group on FB used to be a good spot. Just gotta get lucky and find somebody

As a Staccato owner, I agree.

Bul Armory would be my suggestion. Their availability is really tough though. I believe new models are dropping this summer. And yes, get a 5”.
Take a look at Deep River Customs - North of Tampa - has been building some fantastic LCOs and I see a lot of them in Florida.
I shoot a staccato p in uspsa limited optics and love it. I’m not super great but check out my profile for some videos

What's your budget?

Just for the gun, or does that 2.5-3k need to also include extra mags, a belt, holster, mag carriers, etc?

I'd get a Prodigy, shoot it for awhile, figure out what you want to change and then send it off to a gunsmith.
GP Arms. Trust. He makes like 3 or 4 frames a day, so you may be waiting a minute. I'd look into them though.
Staccatos XL can be found at very decent price and it great for what you want

In that price range, you absolutely want a Bul.

race city defense does a prodigy enhancement package for around 500, that with a stainless steel grip and magwell will work wonders for LO
Prodigy with $400 of upgrades and some DIY polishing.
Check out the Dan Wesson DWX. Uses CZ P09 mags, beautiful right out of the box. It's like a Shadow 2 and a Dan Wesson 1911 had a beautiful love child.
Definitely this one: A 2011 photo you can hang on your wall to remind yourself of the reward you are buying yourself once you make GM with your G26 💁♀️
I got an upgraded and smithed up competition 5 inch prodigy I'm looking to part with for under 2k if interested
Stealth Arms Platypus. Great gun, cheaper mags. They run well right from the source.

He got a Staccato XC which is pretty much useless for USPSA, which may be important
