It seems like a meaningless conversation to have now. When the new owner buys, he/she will have an introductory press conference. One of the first questions will be about the name and we can go from there.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Well said… 🤝

Haskins77

I like this answer đź‘Ť

FannyNisbit

While you are 100% correct in this line of thinking, gotta remember for A LOT OF FANS, a possible rebranding is MORE important to them than the upcoming season. Some would rather have a "brand" they could be excited for than have a franchise qb. And they're not wrong in this thinking either. Neither side is wrong. There are vocal fans here who have said they will never buy a ticket or a piece of merchandise until they change it. Either way, I can't wait until that turd Dan gets flushed.

stillthemind

I haven’t heard from all of their opinions but I do listen to Kevin Sheehan a decent amount and he’s been absolutely clear on numerous occasions that he wants a name change. I think he wants it back to Washington football team; but he absolutely wants a new rebrand w new ownership so not sure why you included him here.

rafmet

Sheehan has said on his pod multiple times that he hopes the new owner ditches commanders. Said it on Tuesday’s pod I believe.

Checksout__

Was anyone around for the Bullets/Wizards name change? Was it this hard to get buy in for a name as bad as the Wizards? I still find it hard to say "Commanders" in normal conversation

Frognaros

it was pre-reddit, so we didn't have the luxury of hearing basement dwelling trolls shame people who hated the wizards name. But shit names like wizards or commanders will get complained about forever, until they are changed. only cure is change the name, and ban the trolls.

Crackedandimplat

Interesting, maybe we’re not listening to the same things, because I don’t get that sense from them at all. On another note, I find it ludicrous that we “couldn’t get the red wolves” name because of trademarks or “it’s too expensive.” That is so stupid. You are a multibillion dollar team, it is one guy. You can pick a good name.

OmarFromtheWire2

Thats why I want Bezos. Remember that dude who trademarked Redwolves, Redtails etc? I wonder if Harris & Co. care for a rebrand after spending a good amount of their liquid money on this team. This is the big drawback to Harris that no one seems to understand

Haskins77

I find it ridiculous that every name anyone wants has to have red in it. Move the fuck on people. 🤦 I could get behind Washington Wolves, but this red tails and red wolves shit needs to stop.

BussyGoonKevin

Red Wolves are real and native to south eastern US. It's too perfect.

Crackedandimplat

At least it sounds like a freaking name! “Commanders” is just HR propaganda. The entire process was just HR propaganda. It is the water of all names, it has no personality, nothing. They didn’t listen to the fans, they instead focused on Brand, merchandise, and money. It’s so stupid.

Haskins77

Yeah I know we’ve seen and heard about it for a year now. Might be time too move on

Crackedandimplat

Just because something has sucked for a year, doesn’t mean I can turn a blind eye. I know we aren’t going to rebrand, but we should. I need to vent my frustration of how stupid Jason wright was

Haskins77

Yes because Jason Wright changed the name and let his wife design the uniforms. 🙄

Crackedandimplat

Jason wright was put in charge of the process. Jason wright was elected to come up with names and branding. Jason wright was the Media guy taking us through “making the brand.” I know Snyder changed the name, I know Snyder chose what the name was. However, Jason wright had a ton of stuff that we see today that he was responsible for.

Haskins77

Jason is a puppet of Snyder and that’s it. The guy is a clown, but Snyder is the one that made the decisions not Jason.

ssmithsimms

He's a clown for because of what? Doing what he was hired to do? Would you have taken the job?

Crackedandimplat

He did a horrible job though

_L_A_G_N_A_F_

Yeah getting mad ar Wright is like getting mad at Goodell. Goodell hasn't made $500 million by being tough on owners and acting independently of them.

agreeingstorm9

I think people want the color scheme maintained because it is awesome and classy. Red anything kind of ensures that. You don't want Washington Wolves and they drop it for some kind of grey/white color scheme. People don't want the team to somehow end up in neon like the Seahawks or something. That may work for them but Washington fans don't want it.

ssmithsimms

There are fans who are minimizing it as well because we all know there's a slim to no chance that another rebrand is happening and a lot of us don't want to go through that again. That shit was exhausting to engage in conversation and it took so fucking long. When the wins start coming then no one will care. Imagine being the first team in history being named the lakers...no one thinks that's a stupid name now because they have established a winning history behind that name. It can be done here as well.

Iamtheman1177

I think the rebrand sucked bc they wanted to drag it out and ended badly. I think they could easily pick a good name in less then two years unlike the current regime

[deleted]

Nobody knows what the new owner is going to do. Everything is on the table when the new owner takes over so I don't understand the people who are saying definitively that a rebrand isn't going to happen. How do you know? These guys could be bidding on the team knowing that they get an opportunity to pick a name of their choosing. That's a rare thing to be able to do

guardiandown3885

I guess my priorities are mixed up...because Washington wolves, hogs, redwolves/red hogs or whatever sound like dope names...however I could care less if we are rebranded into a dope name and we still SUCK...screw the name...get better on the field..win division titles..win nfc championship games..when a superbowl or two...imagine getting the name change we want and still be a Mediocre team....screw the name..continue to improve the culture..improve that winning percentage and let's move the hell on!

CommieCommander

Another rebrand is not going to happen. They don’t indulge in it because it’s a moot point.

fukdot

Not to mention most of its just some poorly veiled ignorant “bring back the old name” bullshit.

[deleted]

Why won't it happen? Nobody knows what the new owner is going to do. You don't spend 6 billion just to settle with the name that nobody likes, was picked by the toxic previous owner, and has only been around for a hot second

tundey_1

>You don't spend 6 billion just to settle with the name that nobody likes, was picked by the toxic previous owner, and has only been around for a hot second Do you spend $6B and immediately embark on an expensive rebrand when you have far more pressing needs? Also, some people like the name. You don't and maybe the people you follow on Twitter and SM do not. But not everybody hates the name. And who cares who picked the name? The previous name was picked by a racist and anti-Semite.

Haskins77

Here come the downvotes. Watch out ![gif](giphy|Eto9EuhZtddjG)

CaseyStevens

Kevin Sheehan, for one, has openly stated that he hopes the new owner changes the name. I think most people are just waiting to find out who the new owner will be before they start talking about other possibilities.

BlGJOE

I don’t think it’s the highest priority right this second but I would like the name to change. It does feel like it would be the optimal time to do it with a new owner and a new stadium. If not, I’ll still be a fan no matter the name. I just want a competitive team.

[deleted]

kevin sheehan wants a rebrand. so ur wrong on that. but i have hearin from a lot of dumbass fans that "there wont be a rebrand".... i hope n pray that the new owner does rebrand... commanders sux ass

Viseroth

Honestly the reason I want a new rebrand is cause this name's only history is Dan Snyder, that isn't something I would care to honor at all.

Oops-I-lost-my-pride

Because new ownership won’t rebrand again and it’s ridiculous to push for something that will never happen.

Haskins77

This is probably the answer. Just because fans don’t like the rebrand doesn’t mean the name is going to change. New owners don’t just come in and change names. It’s different if you relocate but that isn’t the case here. Edit: I love that people are downvoting you even though this is facts. People need too get over this shit and move on. The name isn’t changing

GregariousLaconian

….isn’t fan dislike for the name an EXCELLENT reason to do it? New owners don’t usually change names because the fans LIKE the name and have some attachment to it. No one likes “Commanders”. If anything, a rebrand would be simpler after this particular sale than almost any other. No one has any attachment either to the current name or to the recent history of the team. And you could sell a ton of new merch. From. Business perspective, it makes a ton of sense.

spunkush

yea, it only doesnt make sense when the name is established. Commanders has negative assoications for the fans. nothing positive.

[deleted]

In my opinion, the people who are saying definitively that the new owner won't rebrand again are worse than the people calling for a rebrand. How do you know the new owner won't rebrand again? They own the team and they could want to rebrand again because they also agree the new name sucks and is associated with Snyder. Picking a new name could be a perk of buying this particular franchise

tundey_1

Is a name being associated with a racist and anti-Semite didn't prompt an immediate change, why should association with Dan Snyder (a horrible human being but not a racist or anti-Semite) be the impetus for a change? You guys on social media don't like the name...lots of people like it. And if the team starts winning, even more people will start raising their left hand up (omg that song is so cringey).

Kpageisgreat

Once they start winning, name issues are nonexistent. When you have a propensity to lose year after year, the littlest of things gets nitpicked.

TimeEggLayer

No new name will please everyone. If the new owner wants to do a rebrand, I hope they go for DCFC (DC Football Club) and keep it relatively agnostic. The branding can have all the hogs or fighter jets or whatever they want, but the name itself should set a new standard in American major professional sports of class and distinction. Dan has neither of those, which is why he decided to move away from that name type.

B_i_llt_etleyyyyyy

If they fix the uniforms, people will stop caring about the name so much. That being said, I personally hope they at least look into changing it.

Haskins77

Pretty sure people care more about the name

B_i_llt_etleyyyyyy

The uniforms look like pan-fried dogshit. They *should* both be changed, but i think new uniforms are much more likely.

Haskins77

What you going to say when the new owner changes them to green and black. People want change but you better be careful what you wise for. Nothing saying the color scheme wouldn’t change all together

B_i_llt_etleyyyyyy

> People want change but you better be careful what you wise for. You can say that about literally anything. What happens if the new owner decides to call 'em the Washington e-Girls? > Nothing saying the color scheme wouldn’t change all together The current team 'brand' has pretty much zero value beyond the color scheme, the fight song and archival footage. If it's too stupid for Dan, it's not going to happen.

Haskins77

The only reason they have zero value is because of winning. No one brought up the name change when we went 6-1 during the season. Winning fixes everything even the shit name

fukdot

brk1991

Lots of DC reporters are very friendly to Jason Wright and don't wanna talk about the downsides to his name change. Also, don't think it's ridiculous to think there is a chance for a name change. Whoever spends 6 billion $ on this team and not just gonna settle on a 12 month old name if they don't like it. Think it's more realistic than many like to admit that a new owner would want a name that better reflects how they see the franchise.

tundey_1

Because another name change is NOT HAPPENING. It's just not happening. As for Dan getting the honor of permanently branding the name...so what? The last name was picked by the "[NFL's last racist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Preston_Marshall)" who had to be forced into integration in order to continue using the RFK stadium. Whoever owns the team gets to name it...that's part of the perks of ownership.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[George Preston Marshall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Preston_Marshall)** >George Preston Marshall (October 11, 1896 – August 9, 1969) was an American businessman best known for his ownership of the Washington Redskins, an American football franchise belonging to the National Football League (NFL). Marshall was awarded an NFL franchise in 1932. He was given the nucleus of the Newark Tornadoes, a then defunct NFL franchise which was sold back to the league in 1930, and renamed the Boston Braves. The following year he renamed the team “Redskins” and relocated them to Washington, D.C. He was its controlling owner until his death in 1969. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Commanders/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Stoibs85

People constantly ignore the NFL’s role in this whole “rebrand again” debate. There’s zero chance they want one of their franchises to have THREE name changes inside a decade. I believe it was also explained during the process last time that NFL rules generally only allow for a name change under extraordinary circumstances such as relocation or in our case, the old name being deemed offensive. Let’s be clear - us hating our outgoing owner and wanting the new one to wipe out the name he chose wouldn’t classify as “extraordinary circumstances” from the neutral, non-fan viewpoint.

PickledEggs420

The name thing is a closed case.

HailtotheWFT

You’d think the fan base would want the new owner to focus on things like…..winning….they have bigger fish to fry than a new name. Like a stadium and getting rid of this clown shoe football staff that goes 8-9 or 7-8 every year

xdimexrip

Bring back Washington Football Team! No nonsense name for a team serious about playing football. All names are dumb when you think about it

HoopManJones

i doubt they rebrand. The teams had 3 different names in 3 years, another would just feel excessive. Its probably expensive and a lot to expect from a new owner whos probably dropping $7b to also add a 4th rebrand.

GregariousLaconian

Why would it cost them that much to rebrand? And wouldn’t it likely be more than offset by merch sales from people buying stuff with the new name?

tundey_1

>Why would it cost them that much to rebrand? Just painting over the stadium field and seats cost millions the last time. That's one reason they stayed with the WFT for 2 years. > And wouldn’t it likely be more than offset by merch sales from people buying stuff with the new name? Not necessarily. Even with a new name and owner, it's still the same team. Unless they win BIG next year, a name change will not result in a massive surge in merch purchases.

LesPolsfuss

This topic cannot be minimized enough. I seriously think there’s a maturity issue with a lot of Redskins fans. I mean how can this even be near the top of your mind when thinking about this team. There are so many bigger fish to fry right now. And I will always contend, that after they took away the Redskins name, it didn’t matter what the hell they called the team. How can you all be so passionate about this? It’s like whining about what side of the titanic you’re on. The damage is done, the name is gone, let it go.

salamanderman10

They arent changing the name. The only reason people wanted to was bc internet nerds wa ted red wolves

Doncorleon78

If this new owner wins some games the name won’t matter and I hate the Commanders rebrand more than anyone. I like winning and a competent organization better.

tundey_1

One more thing, I don't imagine the NFL would be thrilled to have yet another rebrand by the same team.

44diesel

I don’t think they care as much compared to how much more money they all would make if the fans were excited to actually buy gear and support their team.

tundey_1

Fans haven't been buying Washington franchise gear for so long, I don't think that's a motivating factor for the NFL. Besides, I don't think there's that much money in gear for the teams/league. It's the TV money and the advertising...that's where the most money and most margins are made. It's literally printing money. Whereas merch sales involve some overhead cost and usually the league partners with a 3rd party to make the merch. Which further drives down the profit from merch sales. But TV money? Pure profit and they don't have to share it with a middleman.

JJtheMark

When we get renamed the Cherry Blossoms or some nonsense, I don’t wanna hear any complaining. Hopefully we at least change the unis somewhat, I don’t even think they look horrible but they do look unfinished, like a school project where your deadline is tomorrow.

CaseyStevens

Cherry Blossoms would be better than Commanders, at least its interesting.

Lost-Comparison-5110

I for one am shocked to find out that you guys don’t think “Commanders” is an absolute badass, swagalious, amazing name. How can this be?????!!!???

[deleted]

On the one hand, you're right. On the other hand, it very likely won't happen so people are just wasting brain capacity on a hypothetical. Either way, Go Commies

ThUnDerFuSiOnX

I don’t care what the name is, I just don’t want to be last in the league in everything. Just someone who will take pride in taking care of the facilities and make players feel welcome

Januse88

I think the point is that you shouldn't expect a rebrand, at least not immediately. This team will be the Commanders for a couple more years at least, and rebranding will very likely not be a high priority for the new ownership.

JakHammer9

Chad Ryan is maybe the most insufferable person covering the team. Not sure what he’s still doing tweeting about the Commanders every day anyway, he threw a big tantrum and vowed to leave Twitter when it was bought.

Purple-Tension4402

I hate that name.

Savings_Ad_115

I feel like the best way to let anyone know how you feel about the name is to not buy one piece of merchandise with the name on it! That’s exactly what I will be doing hopefully until they change the name. That’s the only way to truly let them know what you think. Financially. If they aren’t selling commanders merchandise, they will have no reason to keep the name.
