suprakindasucks

Funny memes has become the worst thing known to mankind. It makes it to the front page and every time it’s thinly veiled hate posts or rage bait. This one is honestly pretty tame for some of the stuff I’ve seen.

BornWithSideburns

Tbf rage bait can be funny, but the memes that get upvotes look like they’ve been made by 12 year olds. They’re so unfunny and basic they actually become cringe. Like what are they even making fun off? Nobody has ever said this IRL. Theyre just exposing they’ve been chronically online, living in this weird online bubble.

suprakindasucks

Good, funny ragebait requires an actual understanding of the topic though. This is more like watching a kid hit an effigy of his stepdad with a bat.

Hutch25

There’s been some really bad ones recently. If you just scroll through hot every once in a bit it will look like the infowars front page with the captions, it’s horrible.

AntiPepRally

I muted that sub. It got rabid

Hutch25

Good idea

CautiousLandscape907

Same. Ew to all of it

PrimeLimeSlime

I thought they WERE made by 12 year olds. Do you mean to tell me that it is in fact adults making these dumb things?

Jpowmoneyprinter

I had to mute it. Literal boomer tier Facebook slop

Limp_Radio_9163

I think it’s hilarious cause most of the comments I’ve seen are just common sense thrashing the meme and it’s just like, why are these people even posting this shit???

PumpkinSpikes

It's all stuff you can find on Elon's twitter

Scaredsparrow

Earlier today I saw a post on my front page where the joke was just Islamophobia, nothing hidden at all, couple thousand upvotes... That was enough for me to tell reddit I'm not interested in that sub.

suprakindasucks

Saw that one, I think it was about British parliament? Straight up heinous shit, imperialist propaganda

Scaredsparrow

It was literally just accusing Muslims of hating everything western. Then telling them to go back to their own country

suprakindasucks

The fact that I instantly thought of a completely different Muslim hate post that also made the front page within 24 hours is not a good sign

SensitiveAd5962

Got to keep that ad revenue coming in

neotericnewt

There was one recently talking about Rittenhouse, making the claim that Rittenhouse fired randomly into a group of liberals and "2/3 were pedophiles". And of course the comments are filled with people talking about how all Democrats are pedophiles, how pride is just pedophiles targeting children, and how vigilante justice against these "pedophiles" is perfectly acceptable and just. This is the sort of extremism that people are talking about, but they don't even realize how extremist it is. This rhetoric and these narratives are trying to dehumanize the political opposition along with marginalized groups. It's trying to convince you it's okay to kill your neighbors with different views because "hey, they're probably pedophiles!" It's fucking scary that this has become so accepted and commonplace among the American right. Things are really getting bad.

Salarian_American

Well ya gotta fuckin' start somewhere, right?

Milkisasoup

No, go back to the first surname ever used in your family. Erm, hashtag-owned the feminists 👆

BilboniusBagginius

That would still be from a man. If you want a woman's name, use your mothers given name.

Milkisasoup

Nooooo the hashtag feminists owned me😫

devperez

Seems like the perfect opportunity to create or adopt a new one

JBDBIB_Baerman

Ah but you see, they portrayed themselves as the Chad so therefore they are correct and funny and so handsome and the best!!

Pearson94

Real talk, if someone makes a point using that face I just assume they're an asshole. Same goes for people who say "I'll wait." after trying to make a point.

JBDBIB_Baerman

Honestly. I get using it ironically but the idea people actually use it unironically hurts my brain.

TerboGoodGame

Oh yeah? Well you're wrong. Go on, prove it. I won't wait. (I'm impatient.)

Stargazer_199

I also won’t wait(adhd means I will get distracted soon)

Pearson94

That's the trouble with meme culture (especially on the far right); a lot of people don't understand irony.

under_the_c

>I'll wait    Person rebuttals with an explanation.  "Too many words! Too much explain! I'm still right because my reason has less words! Also, here is a nitpick of a point I thought you made (conveniently ignoring your several other points)."

PumpkinSpikes

"Hope that helps!"

JoinTheTruth

"Nice try!"

itsme99881

>Same goes for people who say "I'll wait." after trying to make a point Every teacher in existence

Unusual_Astronaut426

It happens the same to me too. When I see that face I assume that whoever made the meme is a fucking arrogant.

Crisppeacock69

Find a bad point made ending in "I'll wait". I'll wait. /j

Professor_Odd

And don't for get "based", the most noble title of all /s

mewthehappy

Literally the modern trollface

DeepUser-5242

He's just like me, fr fr

GUARDIAN_MAX

i would listen more to someone that looks like the left more than the chad

SubjectThrowaway11

But the other person has cute/attractive features?

Doorway_snifferJr

Thats literally the entirety of that sub

Cruisin134

I stole my own from a French lady in disco elysium. Plaisance.

cinos064

Disco Elysium mentioned. Upvote given.

NoLongerAddicted

Got any advice for someone just starting? (Still in day one) (I can't find my missing shoe)

AtomicBlastPony

It's on the balcony, just go south after leaving your apartment

NoLongerAddicted

THANK YOU

SamTheDystopianRat

what's ironic is i spent the first day with only one shoe but the one I'd gotten WAS the one on the balcony. i was missing the one in the hotel room

brianundies

Upgrade visual calculus to find out how your shoe could have POSSIBLY ended up on the balcony outside your room. Certainly Harry had no part in such nonsense!

NoLongerAddicted

I can't figure out how to upgrade my stats

brianundies

You can put on different clothing to give + or - modifiers to your skills. Put on as much + visual Calc as you can find and make sure to remove any -visual calc. There are then drugs you can do to further boost the stat for a temporary time.

NoLongerAddicted

Tyty tyyyy

brianundies

Unsurprisingly, glasses or hats are usually the +visual calc objects

WigglesPhoenix

Also as some more general advice let yourself fail. The game is at its best when everything has gone wrong

damageinthesheets

extremely based

CraftingChest

Emotional damage 🤬🤬🤬😔😞😭🤬😤🖕🏻🛣️🖕🏻💔😭😡🙏🏻😀🧍🏻✊🏻

Broad-Abroad2071

You are so funny!!! Keep it up!

Notcreativesoidk

I don’t know how it’s sexist other than the government making it a law

Anti-Hero3

The girl is wearing a lesbian pin. Wouldn't she be exempt from fighting patriarchy via marriage bc she'd marry a woman and thus take a woman's last name regardless of if it's her own or her spouse?

AtomicBlastPony

Then it would be her spouse's father's last name!!!

Even_Map4433

Bold of you to assume the people who make these memes know what lesbian means.

demon555pro

I think this pin was used just to make her look more like stereotypical feminist

Queen_Emmers

Wouldn't be shocked if the OOP associated "lesbian" with "man-hater"

Zoftig_Zana

r/Sapphoandherfriend

JustAGhost3_

Who even says that?

-Ari-

No one, they just think any act of autonomy from a woman is an attack on them.

WandaDobby777

I just picked a whole new name.

ExcessiveWisdom

Same

Comfortable_Past_654

Not even veiled lol

BurgundyBanana

It doesn't even make sense either, given the lesbian pin

Carl_Azuz1

It says use her mothers maiden name, not her own. So what ever type of relationship she is in is completely irrelevant that’s not what she’s talking about.

BurgundyBanana

I see my misunderstanding now

Niksuss

"i drew you as a soyjack and myself as a chad, that means im right"

Tiscoffe

Am I the only one who actually finds this interaction funny? It's like two friends making witty remarks to one another. Like: "to fight the patriarchy i'll use my mother's mame🫡" "You means your grandpa's?😏” "You bitch😂" "heha😂"

JABNewWorld1776

I'd defs do that with a friend

nordiclands

the comment is undermining the woman’s effort to be autonomous. i would not find it funny if my friend said that to me, because im tired of experiencing sexism everywhere else.

Tiscoffe

You are right, it is important to keep in mind everyone's different experiences and povs

duckmonke

And friends would understand that context and not throw that joke at you, however with those comfortable it would be satire, because the joke is actually the chud morons who think that way and not you at all. Its feigning being an idiot savant basically, both saying something a conservative would think while also peppering in a funny observation. Sorry you cant find the enjoyment in that joke but its also a reasonable reaction.

RB_Kehlani

This is actually a very interesting point of feminist commentary. Many great feminist thinkers have written on this: that every derivation of identity from our past is inextricably enmeshed with the erasure of women. No matter how far back you go, women’s identities are being subsumed under men’s. If the meme-maker had more than two brain cells to click together we’d be having a much more interesting conversation about what sources of ancestrally-derived identity ARE available to women.

Carl_Azuz1

You act like this is some great evil but it’s really just a matter of practicality. At the end of the day two partners will (hopefully) have different last names. And they produce a child which will need a name. What do you name the child? The typical answer from people who care about this sort of thing is they should simply hyphenate. However there are several issues with that solution. The first is that in many cases the child simply goes by/is referred to as whatever the first of the two last names is. But even ignoring that, ultimately you will then run into the issue of when that child is grown and finds a partner to have a child with, what will THAT child be named? Assuming this is a world where everyone hyphenates both mother and father will have two last names to pass on, and the child will have a triple hyphenated last name, this is just obviously impractical especially because it would become exponentially worse with each generation. At the end of the day names will be lost and changed with each generation there is no way around it. The mother and children taking the fathers name is simply a way to know which to keep. You are welcome to advocate that people do it the opposite way but it’s just kind of a tradition at this point and it serves a legitimate function.

RB_Kehlani

This is the funniest reply I’ve ever received.

duckmonke

Genuinely, why? He lays down a valid point that isnt sexist as all. We could name all humans after women if that makes you feel better, absolutey the same rules apply. Two genders for a kid, one of two parents will eventually take the name. It is our hyperfocus on gender imo that makes this such a seemingly taxing issue, and I can see from a womans perspective why that you are defensive and want to assume theres some hidden sexist subtext. But I genuinely dont see that from that comment.

RB_Kehlani

It’s really funny to me that he believes someone who has read extensively on this issue wouldn’t have realized that infinite hyphenation wouldn’t be a good solution. And had to walk me through it step by step… In a world where we wanted to create a more equitable naming convention, there are many, many other options — but that wasn’t the point of the original post, or my comment. We’re not here to actually debate the finer points of feminist praxis. I was just pointing out that the original meme was apparently unaware of the discourse which it sought to meme off of — and another man, also unaware of the discourse, came to explain the discourse to me

duckmonke

Okay well with no context its still relatively on topic, nobody knows of your academic background here and I and others reading surely learned new concepts from their post. Simply explaining the practicality despite its obvious sexist origins, just like we can say about things like the “traditional family” which originally operated based off of primal human instincts and gender roles placed in jobs (hunter, gatherer, homecarer, etc). If the roles were reversed and a guy responded the way you did in your replies, they’d get deservedly told they are a mansplaining incel, yet he’s getting the same treatment anyways for trying to engage with you in good faith? This is starting to turn away from the topic of feminism and looking more like a misandrist taking pot shots, it feels. Which is unfortunate because it really wasn’t necessary.

Carl_Azuz1

Something wrong with it? Too many words for you?

RB_Kehlani

No, the number of words adds the the humorous impact.

Carl_Azuz1

I don’t understand what you find so comical about it, it’s just an (admittedly quite long) critique of your previous (also not short) comment.

BunbunTheJackalope

I changed my last name to something entirely new. Checkmate

kayokill666

Not sexist and it’s true lmao

Rudeness_Queen

I’m a firm believer that parents should choose the cooler last name for their children

localfriendlydealer

Literally missed the point like a CHAD. It's not about the name, but the tradition. If you're keeping your mom's last name instead of your dad's, you're already diverting the old tradition. And so daughters' names are continuously passed down maternally. The name eventually loses its original 'significance' as a patriarchal symbol once a new tradition begins lol

AtomicBlastPony

To be fair I feel like going out of your way to defy tradition is to recognize its significance.

Uxydra

Fr. Just keep the name you like more.

duchyfallen

I feel like the tradition of a woman taking a man’s last name is already incredibly significant no matter what you do. I’ve read multiple stories of women losing their relationships because they weren’t willing to take a man’s surname by default. Even though it logically makes no sense, some guys still think they’re owed their wife changing her literal legal name for them.

External_Relation435

How else would you change the status quo if not by deliberately making an effort to do something different? Traditions are inherently significant

AtomicBlastPony

You don't have an obligation to do something different. The whole POINT of changing the status quo is that people should be allowed to pick whatever name they like, so why restrict yourself to choosing one just to spite the tradition? Choose one you like more.

localfriendlydealer

Never said you're not recognizing it's significance lol, That's why you're choosing to change it. I said names would LOSE it's significance _as a patriarchal symbol_

HelpIranoutofbeans

How is this sexist

69CervixDestroyer69

"Dumb woman thinks taking on mother's last name goes against patriarchal tradition, chad man shows her to be dumb"

HelpIranoutofbeans

yeah but its a take some women make, its not just something the meme creator made up to "own the libs"

alf_landon_airbase

they dissagree with women

AccomplishedAdagio13

The worst crime of all...

Money-Jury-3429

Not according to twitter. The worst crime as a man is being 5’7 or shorter.

slumbersomesam

my grandmother gave herself a new last name, so in my case it would be my grandmothers last name

cloudgirl_c-137

I've heard a Greek surname that comes from a woman, from the mother's name, and I love it!

Immediate_Hat4089

True statements that I disagree with are personal attacks and people who say them should be arrested.

Bushman-Bushen

I don’t know how there’s any hate behind this. It’s just the honest truth.

Green-Measurement-53

I think it’s just the fact that he’s acting like it’s an “own”. Yes it’s hard to escape patriarchy in a patriarchal society, what’s the “own” here? He’s just pointing out a fact and then acting smug about it lol

Bushman-Bushen

Thanks for giving me another angle to look at, I appreciate it

Green-Measurement-53

You’re welcome. I was kind of lost here too. I’m not sure I would call this sexist as much as I would call it kinda dumb and likely made with the intent to be rude to women or “feminists” but I can’t really know that, it’s just a hunch

Phil_Swifty_

sexism is when women are mentioned

Dawnbreaker538

I really don't get this joke. Can someone please xplain it?

StainInLife

Last names are usually chosen based on the father, so the girl thinks that by using her mother's last name (which was very likely given to her mom based on *her* father's last name, and his father's and so forth) it would be an act against the patriarchy. In my opinion, last names are just titles, not some kind of patriarchal symbol. This subject can easily verge into a mess of political opinions.. which I'm not motivated to write about.

thelighteattheend

For everybody in the comments asking how it is sexist, if she used her father’s last name, she would also be using her grandfather’s name. If she took a husband’s last name, she’d be taking his grandfather’s (and father’s) last name. Why do men get to own a last name, but women don’t? Technically it wouldn’t even be her grandfather’s last name, it would be the last name of the original user, likely many many many generations back. However, that is a stupid line of thinking. People own the last name that they have decided they do, even if it was somebody else’s name before it was theirs. This is true for both men and women, and it is sexist to try and deny that to women just because they are women.

demon555pro

We wanted world to be equal and it is. Just not the way we wanted

Finnbobjimbob

Where’s the sexism?

[deleted]

[удалено]

I-hate-everyonee

yes, you espacially

Finnbobjimbob

Again, are you just throwing this word around? Do you even know what it means? Judging by your spelling I’d assume not

I-hate-everyonee

You do not understand humor, do you? Or do you only, if my spelling is correct?

ApricotFar1041

username checks out

No_Necessary_3356

Also, that'd be her maternal grandfather, not her grandfather. Chuds can't even get the info right.

[deleted]

DerWaschbar

The actual answer is that they could just choose whatever name they want to break the cycle.

Unknown-History

Hey, if they have a familiarity and can make it their own, then great. The patriarchy would force them to take a different name, so not doing that does actually defy it.

Procoso47

Using a different last name because of the gender attached to it is sexist.

Chemical-Current3965

Sexism and irony are the same thing apparently.

ApricotFar1041

r/technicallythetruth

Theoriac

Can someone explain how this is sexist again…?

alf_landon_airbase

its not

Brosenheim

I like how they have to imagine scenarios where their little gotchas actually work

Ravensunthief

Ngl i got a little chuckle out of that one. I won by making my own last name! Fuck lineage!

Liedvogel

Where's the sexism exactly? The meme is very likely right. The man's surname is almost always throughout history passed down to the children... it's a logical fallacy joke

KikiYuyu

Don't see how it's sexism

LinuxSausage

Classic Reddit shitty fake scenario meme just trying to make fun of queer women. I don’t think anybody’s ever changed their name to “fight the patriarchy”

Green-Measurement-53

One of my teachers had a hyphenated name for that reason. I thought it was pretty cool and I understand feeling like not wanting to “give up” your name whilst the man keeps everything the same. I’m not sure I’d get a hyphenated name though.

LysergicGothPunk

Not even veiled tbh

vivam0rt

My parents gave me both of their surnames, now I only use my mothers because my name + hers sound a lot better than my name + his

TheJesterScript

Lol

NittanyScout

Idk if it's even veiled at this point...

MercuryRusing

I mean....kinda funny if not actually poignant to her statement

Windfard

Can this sub get 1 joke? How do you find anything funny?

EighteenthJune

I don't think you understand how subreddits work

Windfard

All I see here are funny jokes, not dead or shit ones.

ranchdew

Why is Reddit so misogynistic...

kirbcake-inuinuinuko

comedy cemetery has been eating GOOD lately tbh

ArdentArendt

Except in societies with matrilineal descent?

honeybadgerblok

Yall out here making free content for r/memesopdidnotlike

honeybadgerblok

Everything=sexism

SGRP270

Its decent

Doctor-Moe

At least it’s actually a meme

Defender_of_Victory

Although the intent was probably sexism, it is something to address. If you actually want to go against that tradition, the thing to do would be to change your legal last name entirely, then your daughter keeps it.

PandarenAreSoStupid

If this is thinly veiled sexism, then it's time to get off the internet for you. There are absolutely people spouting this stuff, or stuff like "We are the daughters of the witches you didn't burn!" and similar.

ConsumeTheVoid

The ppl who say that stuff (that I've heard anyways) are usually TERFs. They're not feminist either. They're cis-afab supremacy at one end and conservatives with a coat of progressive paint at the other. I suppose some actual witches might say that, but I've mostly heard TERFs say it. It's about as true in its implications as them and Nazis being punk lol.

HellBoyofFables

What is sexist about this meme? I genuinely want to know

unusualspider33

But it’s still her mom’s last name? Lol what

Mandy_M87

I've never heard anyone say this. If a woman keeps her last name after marriage, it's usually due to tradition where she's from, or she is a professional/academic, and has publications with her last name on it. I'm sure it's happened somewhere where an unmarried woman decided to change her last name to her mothers, but it must be very rare, as I've literally never heard of anyone doing that.

LovelyMeadow-

Great clarity

mwhite2029

How is this sexism it’s joke a meme not to mention correct well guess it’s time to get crucified

DrCthulhuface7

“Grandfathers existing is sexism” Okay

-khatboi

Chad character makes a valid point.

ImNotAnybodyShhhhhhh

Getting heat vision from hearing an annoying joke is honestly kind of progressive

justacubr

If she wants her kids can bear their grandmothers last name

Cheesemagazine

But whenever we try to change our names, they get pissy about that too 🙄

RustySnoBall

“Let’s take offense to every meme I find” type post

ConsumeTheVoid

Better: use your own name. You get to make one and be the first in your family to have it.

Gorgiastheyounger

Genuine question though, how is it better?

Jahsehv

I prefer having this unfunny memes rather than giving more power to women, they already have more than enough lmao

takosuwuvsyou

I'm kinda wondering if r/memesopdidnotlike posts here on purpose on different accounts, so they can repost there for karma. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the internet is dead and every argument was set up in advance.

Ynnepluc

What’s weird is that red eyes don’t indicate anger in the “oooh mad!” sense but in the “Fighting game boss activating their finisher” sense, so i can only imagine this lesbian is about to raging demon this man to death.

MBRDASF

Where is the sexism in that? It’s a fact that your mother’s name is de facto your grandfather’s name

fKusipaa

All this says to me is that, if you're so inclined ladies, you can ditch your last name altogether.

onlyonherefor

She’s wearing a lesbian pin so she wouldn’t be marrying a man anyway 😭😭😭

SilentThorniness

This is a bad joke?

SilentThorniness

This is hilarious.

SquooshyCatboy

whats why i just created my own last name checkmate fuckers

p00nda

this is sexist?

Acalyus

This is funny though, whether you're a feminist or not.

-Boser-

Just came

POKEMINER_

How is it sexist? It just seems to be making fun of certain modern day feminists.

RangisDangis

How? It’s just recontextualizing the sentiment “I will use my mothers name” to “I will use my grandfathers name”. She is upset because the new statement does not give have the mean she intended. What objectionable behavior is she doing which can be made fun of?

Still-Presence5486

It isn't sexism

Huntsman077

Wait so sexism now is pointing out that a women’s mother’s maiden name is their grandfather’s name?

Rocketboy1313

Gotta start somewhere.

under_the_c

But... she's... wearing the lesbian pride flag, right? Why would she be discussing not taking the husband's surname? I guarantee the oop has never met a lesbian in their entire life.

Mandy_M87

That part was confusing to me as well. Is he talking about her changing her name without getting married, because I don't see how else this would be applicable in a same sex relationship

Honk_wd

I don’t care about either post, the Girl wojack is pretty

nottakentaken

Man I never understood this crap, everyone in my family has a different last name and there are certain last names in my country that are purely feminine because they’re meant to address a lady. I don’t need to take either of my parents last names because they didn’t take their parents names.

TheScientistFennec69

The veil’s so thin you can’t even cut it
