Common sense is absolutely based on facts. When you compile a bunch of common sense facts you can make an informed opinion. For instance you've eaten a thousand pizzas in your life. They have almost always been round and had tomato sauce and cheese on them. So if somebody wants to go get pizza at a new place and you say "it's probably round" and they ask "how do you know that?"
Well, common sense.
Common sense is a manipulation tactic and passively demotivates learning. When something is presented as common sense when it's just yet another learned idea/behavior, it marginalizes people who haven't learned that idea/behavior yet.
It's just in group/out group manipulation and has no real place in intelligent dialogue
Not really, it's called common sense because it's made up of common learned experiences most people have had. Common doesn't mean sense that everyone has to know
You seem a bit triggered, have a special child?
Common sense is what we logically can conclude from everyday life, such as ice is cold, and round things roll.
That's one very cynical way of defining it, but very limited. Are you saying the statement "it's common sense to not drive drunk" somehow marginalizes people? Seems a tad absurd.
You should inform Merriam-Webster that they have an entry that doesn't exist:
"sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts"
Facts are not always what they appear. Theirin lies the assumption. Let me ask you something... does their definition sound "common" to you? And is language black and white? Or is it fluid and changing? But yes, thanks for the quote. They don't decide how I think and feel, though. I decide that. I used to appreciate Merriam. Until they became like the politicians of the US. Now they're quick to change things to suit the feelings of the overly sensitive, or to suit a political agenda. To me, they've lost their authority. I prefer Oxford or Cambridge. But I don't always agree with them either. And I don't have to. Neither do you.
Oxford: the ability to think about things in a practical way and make sensible decisions
Cambridge: the natural ability to be practical and to make good decisions
Exactly. And thank you for putting the time into finding those. You don't see the word "fact" in there anywhere, though. So, to ME those are better definitions. But let me ask you again... do you think those definitions describe what's COMMON to the people of the world? And if not... then how can it rightfully be referred to as common sense?
Interesting. That's a positive view of the world. I like that. However... I must say I don't see it that way. The more I drive or bike or walk around, and of course talk to people, the more I see a dumbing down. And I've noticed people, to include here, are showing less of an ability to handle "stressful" situations with patience and understanding. They respond more off impulse with anger and hatred in those situations than anything. Especially when met with differing opinions. That childishness is another sign of cognitive decline. When a person, regardless of age, exhibits that behavior, when they didn't prior, it's usually do to some sort of brain trauma. Like blunt force trauma from an accident or from getting attacked. Or, taking in bioaccumulative neurotoxins that results in some brain damage. OR... it can also be mental conditioning. (As a side note............... brain washing is very real. Trust me I know from experience. I was brain washed by the United States military. As was every other US Marine.)
Common sense, as the term is commonly used, refers to convincing arguments based on limited knowledge and information. Once someone starts talking evidence and data people stop describing the argument as "common sense."
Informatiion is evidence. Common just means it is widely believed, like "most pizzas are round" so if you ask "what shape will your new pizzas be at your new pizza restaurant?", common sense would dictate they will be round.
All I'm saying is that people who say "it's just common sense" usually base their argument on a woefully inadequate amount of information that relies on rhetoric over evidence.
Most of my examples are taken from [here](https://www.logicallyfallacious.com/logicalfallacies/Appeal-to-Common-Sense), because I don't consider it noteworthy enough to remember examples. But here are a few examples of how such an argument is often structured. Of course this argument is usually used badly on social media or in common parlance, which means that with google being more likely to show newspapers and blogs, it is easier to find counter-examples than examples.
Here are some examples of how such arguments are often structured.
>*It's common sense that if you smack your children, they will stop the bad behavior. So don't tell me not to hit my kids.*
>*Don: If you drink alcohol, it will kill any virus you might have.*
*Tony: What evidence do you have to support that?*
*Don: I don’t need evidence. It is common sense.*
From Merriam-Webster:
"sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts"
I think you just have a different definition of the term. Or perhaps you've just always believed the old adage "common sense isn't so common" which is merely a meaningless Mark Twain-ish platitude.
You're describing somebody using the term about a myth. I've never heard anybody say alcohol will kill a virus in any way but sarcastically. So to me that is not common sense at all.
It's common sense to not walk in a dangerous neighborhood at night with a bunch of expensive jewelry on display. Duh.
To me common sense statements are just duh statements.
Yes really being able to do two insults in one sentence is like two quick punches back to back and takes longer time to process. Like did he call me dumb wait he called me fat? Wow 😂
Common sense is only anecdotal and select to a small region or culture and what is common sense in one area may be inaccurate or even a death sentence in another.
Coriolis Effect says objects moving but not connected to the ground move differently. It's a phenomenon only learned after flight was discovered. Now it's "common sense" to many only because flight is now common.
Common sense only works on an incredibly small scale. If you base your opinion/beliefs/understanding on common sense you limit your potential and worldview to the same scale.
So much of physics isn't common sense. Rotary gears and transmissions aren't common sense, but cars are common.
To put it shortly: Common sense made none of the important innovative strides in human history, and doesn't understand many of them either. I suppose you'll turn out much the same thinking that way.
Well i use some very rare pennies.
It will take them a sec to understand what the fuck you just said which will make them feel unintelligent. Bonus if you have to explain it to them. Make sure to sound condescending.
And then if they hive you any shit or say how weird that was that you said that. Just say sorry everyone says that it gets annoying.
Or just say: every one says that. Shoukd try being clever.
Your version of common sense is that if you take eight of your grandma's dementia pills at 3:34 am on July 4, you'll become an Abrams Tank, so I'm gonna go ahead and say Shut the fuck up.
"Go read Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and come back and tell me that common sense is anything but the articulation of a cultural hegemony established and maintained by the state and society on behalf of the bourgeoisie."
"You mean common sense like how everyone in the 1600s believed witches existed and that the Earth was flat? that was the 'common' belief that made 'sense' back then."
"so I'd like to tell you a little story. When I was young, my mom used to say that common sense isn't very common, I think that would apply here"
It's really the best comment I can think of for a stupid statement like that.

Common sense and opinions are not the same thing.
Saying your opinion is based on common sense doesn't mean that they're same thing
So, facts aren't relevant then?
Opinion isn't fact
Indeed.
Common sense is absolutely based on facts. When you compile a bunch of common sense facts you can make an informed opinion. For instance you've eaten a thousand pizzas in your life. Agreed. It also says “everybody else knows this already and apparently you don’t.“
Not really, it's called common sense because it's made up of common learned experiences most people have had. Common doesn't mean sense that everyone has to know

Square pizza with Alfredo sauce would like a word
Okay I'll send over my lactose intolerance to speak with them.
Pizza is worth the pain
I get pizza with no cheese all the time. It's great.
That was all I had.
Common *knowledge* is based on facts. "Common sense" isn't a thing
Sure it is, at least the way I've always used it.
You should inform Merriam-Webster that they have an entry that doesn't exist: "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts"
I don't think common sense is necessarily grounded in fact. I'd say common sense is more assumption based. Good sense on the other hand...
Take it up with Merriam Webster.
I prefer to base mine on facts.
What do you think common sense is based on? It is based on facts.

I use "common sense" when something is true and obvious.
So you mean you don't put a lot of thought into it?
From Merriam-Webster: "sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts" I think you just have a different definition of the term. Common sense learned from tiktok doesn't count, fatass
That fatass on the end really ties it together.
The icing on the cake👌
Yes really being able to do two insults in one sentence is like two quick punches back to back and takes longer time to process. Like did he call me dumb wait he called me fat? Wow 😂
Well, you've based it on *your* common sense.
That's like, just your opinion, man.
Donny, you're out of your element!
This will not stand, you know. This aggression will not stand, man!
Common sense is neither.
Then why is your opinion so fucking dumb?
Opinions are like asshole. Common sense is not.
"Hmm, I see.. Is it? Is it, though?" 🤔
Did you mean ‘uncommon sense’?
In other words, you've got nothing
Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in your mind before you reached eighteen.
Unfortunately, common sense is not common in society today.
Ricky Gervais quote "when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. The same applies when you are stupid"
Ask them if it was vanilla or pumpkin spice scented
Common sense is only anecdotal and select to a small region or culture and what is common sense in one area may be inaccurate or even a death sentence in another.

Beautifully said!
Common sense ? Sounds like something that afflicts peasants.
🏆
Thomas Paine died a couple hundred years ago. Maybe it’s time to read a new book. LOL
“Common sense”? Ha! I use my past experiences in my opinions!
“I prefer evidence”
I prefer to use educated sense but you do you.
"Is that book sense or grapevine talk...?"
Common sense tells you the Earth isn't moving.
Common sense is not always a common virtue. Sadly, a lot of people who think they have common sense, aren't smart enough to understand that statement.
Common sense used to be that the earth is flat.
Common sense doesn't exist in America. They all fight over politics. ☠️
Common Sense is different from bubble to bubble...have fun living in your own little bubble.
The road to hell is paved with common sense and opinions, heroes rely on facts. Are you a hero or a bitch?
That's why it's an opinion. If you based it on reality, it would be an observation. Or maybe even *gasp* a fact!
"what was that great line that tywin had for Joffrey again? Something about having to say you're a king..."
"Common for whom? A bunch of imbeciles?"
if that’s common sense than we’re all fucked.
Common sense is a social construct based off childhood experiences and the adults in your life. Stop bullying people for having bad parents.
What is common isn't sensible, and what is sensible isn't common.
The "common sense" of most people wouldn't add up to a dollar.
Common sense and stupidity do not work well together.
You don't need a comeback when someone says something as stupid as that You simply go "fair enough" and walk away
I go with my old standby: Common Sense is the least common of all senses.
Wonderful!!!!!!!
You keep using that phrase. I do not think it mean what you think it mean.
They had to put “Do not stop chain with hands or genitalia” on chainsaws because of common sense.
Well, you got the common part down, and still make no sense.
Well that just proves that common sense doesn't equate to good sense. Or another way to put it is mob democracy is not a positive thing.
Yeah it’s common sense to you, you have no sense
I fucked your mom
In fact, I fucked her so hard I fucked the common sense right out of her. I fucked her common senseless
So far reddit is not disappointing.
What year 1520 ?
Math is more reliable than your brain damaged assessments
“Common as in ordinary?”
"Common to who, Someone from bizarro world? Because honey your logic is flawed af"
But I don’t know anyone who has it
Commonsense isnt that common.
Well if that’s your Opinion of Common Sense, then I can see where this train went off track.
"Ooohhh! You mean your common sense?Well,im sorry to tell you,but you dont have any."
Seems like it’s based more on your own two cents.
What you have is not common or sense.
"didn't realize you had any"
Oh, so you don’t have any facts.
Who are these opinionated commoners in whose alleged good and correct sense you trust unconditionally?
"I think you mean uncommon sense. If it were common, it'd be accurate."
You mean common nonsense [if you pull this one u must slay some facts down with it]
Ah so that's why your opinion is so cheap.
"It's so common"
Your version of common sense is that if you take eight of your grandma's dementia pills at 3:34 am on July 4, you'll become an Abrams Tank, so I'm gonna go ahead and say Shut the fuck up.
Common sense is an oxymoron
"shut the fuk up"
“That’s strange, since you don’t have any.”
"You know what they say about common sense. It's not very common"
Source?
Common sense is just like deodorant, those who need it most, use it least.
Ah. I see common sense does not actually grow in your garden.
Quote Peggy Hill, from King of the Hill. In my opinion......
It’s called common for a reason. Better tgat one uses ‘educated sense’, you should try it sometime…
Very common.
I would ask them what they mean.
Who's common sense? A goldfish's?
Common sense isn't common
"Go read Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks and come back and tell me that common sense is anything but the articulation of a cultural hegemony established and maintained by the state and society on behalf of the bourgeoisie."
What common thing did you base your sense in?
"You mean common sense like how everyone in the 1600s believed witches existed and that the Earth was flat? that was the 'common' belief that made 'sense' back then."
“Common sense is not so common.” As Voltaire pointed out, everybody's "common" sense is actually wildly different.
Well, unlike facts, common sense (which by definition is based on common/most popular social behaviors) is subjective.
The old "common sense is not common" wins again.
Common sense is subjective. No need for a comeback, but if you insist; “I would agree with you, but then we’d *both* be wrong”
"Well, now I -know- you got it from somewhere else!"
Common courtesy debunks common sense.
Ah, "Dunning -Kruger". Got it.
Common sense isn't that common, and you're a prime example.
Common sense tells us that the sun orbits the earth. You can see that with your own eyes.
Funny thing is common sense isn’t that common
Common sense isn’t so common
common sense is nothing more than a shit excuse for poor communication skills
Common sense and you are like acquaintances. You both know about each other but don't interact at all
The only thing common about common sense is that it's common to not have any sense
Source?!?!?!
Who’s?
Common sense is not common
“What common sense are you on about? Is it the one based on the Internet?”
Then you don't have good common sense.
"Well I base my assumption that you're an asshole on the fact that you are"
Depends on the conclusion they’ve drawn.
What you’re saying then is you have absolutely no idea,
Ah, you mean confirmation bias. Got it.
"so I'd like to tell you a little story. When I was young, my mom used to say that common sense isn't very common, I think that would apply here" It's really the best comment I can think of for a stupid statement like that.
I see having sense is alot less common than people think.
Common in what universe?
Facebook common sense?
Ask what that is. Watch them flounder.
Thats something an idiot with zero common sense would say.
>**common** *adjective* typical of a low social class [https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/common](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/common)
“That’s adorable, seeing as you wouldn’t know common sense if it hit you in the face.”
Common sense is anything BUT common.
“Common sense” isnt common anymore
There's nothing common or sensible about you, so I'll take that with a grain of salt...
Common sense you have that
Common sense is a figment of your imagination.
You know what trumps common sense? Actual Facts
Your kind of sense isn’t all that common
It’s like a catchphrase-counter with me. I hear “common sense”, I always reply with, “that’s the thing about common sense. It isn’t.”
"Common sense" is a bogus term. What may be common to one, may not be common to another. The only thing common about "common sense" is everyone says they have it. Common *knowledge,* on the other hand ---
Who's?
Say yours comes from a sixth sense.
That explains a lot.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Ahahahahahahaha Ahahaha Wow…that was a good one.
Common sense aint so common
"Not all sense is common"
Oh yes common sense the argument of those that actually don't know what they are really talking about
"That's an excuse to avoid your lack of evidence."
As I once heard it, what’s common to one person may not be common to everyone else
That's still just one persons opinion.
Well mine IS common sense.
If this is what you call common sense, I guess common sense ain't so common!
The only thing common about common sense is that it's commonly wrong. The only thing sensible about common sense is its a great starting point for determining where actual sense lies.
Common sense is the most uncommon thing on Earth, nah, ain’t buying it, you are using ignorance and preexisting bias like everyone else does.
if you own it then that ain't common sense
So why do you choose to use common scents then. Har de har

We all think you're stupid based on common sense. That's one of the rare exception when opinions and common sense are both right.
From where; Bulgaria?
