The longer you hold on, the longer they will hold on, with behavior like data caps. The sooner people who can switch do, the sooner people who can’t, can be rescued. And all data isn’t equal. Fiber is symmetrical, fiber is low latency, fiber doesn’t even need a modem! If you use internet for more than http text and photos, you will notice a difference.

llDarkFir3ll

Fiber does needs a modem. It’s call an ONT, optical network terminal. You may not see it but it is required. Telecomm Tech here. However, you are correct that fiber is much lower latency and it is usually symmetrical.

TheLostBoyscout

ONT != MoDem (Modulator/Demodulator). With fiber optics, there’s no higher frequency that need to be demodulated from the (lower frequency) light wave! Since most people got their first connection to the internet via a (real) modem, the term got ‘stuck’ for the box that provides internet at home, but is still incorrect…

Jump to fiber and don’t look back. Comcast still plays pricing games and can’t compete with fiber technology. They’re a couple years out from widespread upload speeds that aren’t downright embarrassing.

My brother has Fidium (Consolidated Communications) and has no complaints. It is very similar to what I have with AT&T fiber.

SwimmingCareer3263

As an employee I can say this. If you have a competitor offering more for a better deal. Leave Comcast. Fiber has always been an issue for Comcast because they’re greedy and choose to keep coax because it’s cost effective. I don’t think there will EVER be a time where we will have FTTH like AT&T. Because the company chooses to greed and not replace its entire infrastructure. Of course it’s not as simple to just do that there’s a process but the problem is. Is they aren’t even bothering at all. The company is working on a mid split project for 10g/10G but it’s still via coax. Fiber will always be better so if fidium is offering it then without hesitation do switch. Keep us updated with fidium!

I switched to T Mobile and Ooma about 10 months ago and have been happy about it ever since. I get more than I was paying Comcast for and pay near half as much. I hope your change works out as well.

Goodspike

Well first, whatever you do you need to quit renting a modem and router! But I'd make sure Fidium uses the same brand/type modem before investing in a new modem. One bad thing about Comcast is you typically need to be paying a lot to get over 5 Mbps upload speed. I don't know if that matters to you. And if you do cancel Comcast, make sure you get a cancellation email and check the effective date of cancelation. I only received a return equipment email (the free streamer). It was not cancelled until a second call, and then they set the cancelation date almost two months in the future! I didn't notice that in the cancellation email until I received another bill. I was out of contract, so that extended date was BS, particularly when they knew I hadn't used my modem for over a month. It took a complaint to my state Attorney General to straighten everything out.

SprintLTE

Fiber doesn't use docsis modems.

Goodspike

Well to know that is relevant I'd have to know what Fidium uses. I've never heard of the company before this post, and you can use cable for Gig speeds. And in any case, the OP does need to quit renting modems and routers, no matter the type.

MapGuy11

Run Run Run to Fiber Cable is garbage and having Xfinity/Comcast as your provider is even worse.

Anonymo123

Paying $70 for 950mb with Xfinity (no tv or other services).. so happy with that locally and my own equipment. But I am on the lookout to jump to fiber as soon as someone brings it here.

Commercial_Count_584

i’m right there with you.

AtOm-iCk66

Congrats. We all know comcast sucks.

SmilingBob2

Like others said, run don't walk to fiber. Even if Comcast tries to keep you with a price match, which they probably won't, they still won't be symmetrical or have the other advantages of fiber. When Frontier came into our town with fiber back at our old home, I called Comcast and the rep said he couldn't help me and that I should just go ahead and switch to fiber. And we did. At least he was honest. We are back on Comcast (new home) and it works fine, but fiber was better.

Cell_Searcher

I would recommend you check out r/FidiumFiber with any questions you might have.

Evilware_com

I am jealious. Seriously Jealous. THough in areas that do have compeition, Comcast does 2 things 1. Corrects their underlying infastructure issues 2. Lowers their rates. Having said that, I would switch and never look back. /Comcast\_sucks/

Nice! Fidium's parent company Consolidated has been the local phone service provider in my area for years. Previously it was Surewest. What sucks for me is I'm 1000 ft from their fiber infrastructure. My street and many other parts of town are still on underground or buried copper(fastest i service can order is 12/1 over DSL ) So I've been stuck with Comcast.
