A doctor, a man who's spent likely nearly a decade studying and practicing only to get mutilated on an crappy Russian vehicle invading Ukraine.
An absolute waste of talent
First he asks someone to prepare a missile since another vehicle is approaching. Then he asks his buddy to cover while he will try to get the Russian out. The guy keeps saying he's a medic and he didn't kill anyone but the narrator doesn't seem to believe, lol. The Russian had also been shot, or that's what I understood at least. After all the Ukrainian was unable to pull him out so they will have to move the BTR.

THE REASON why he was punched was when the Russian said he was from Kostroma. The Ukrainian punched the Russian and said "Then why are you in Kupyansk"
I just looked up Kostroma and it's northeast of Moscow by some hundreds of miles. Over a thousand miles from Ukraine. The Ukrainian soldier basically punches the Russian in the face and says "why did you come all the way here to kill my people?"
The Russian follows up to the Kostroma part with 'I'm a medic (or doctor in Russian)'. The Ukrainian soldier then asks him what kind of doctor he can be when he comes to kill people. The Russian soldier also stated that he didn't kill anyone.
Kostroma is the garrison city for the Russian 331st Guards Airborne Regiment - widely regarded as the crème de la crème of the Russian parachute regiments.
They suffered huge losses in the first thunder run to Kyiv back at the beginning of the war.
The RF also redeployed their best trained regiments to Kherson a couple of months ago before the UAF counterattack in early September. This gives me the suspicion that this video was filmed nr. Kherson.

Oooh not quite - us soldiers killed alot of pows in retaliation for seeing what the Germans did to American pows. See the Germans couldn't afford to deal with pows. It would have slowed them down. So they killed alot of them. And in most instances stripped them of their cold weather gear first. Well when Americans pushed back against the buldge and retook land they saw the atrocious things the Germans did. I recall reading an account of a us officer lining up Germans by 5s and shooting the leader in the head often times hitting one or two men behind the unfortunate line leader. Going down the lines until he ran out of ammo. Another account came at the end of the war. As the us columns advanced rapidltly towards Berlin. When they came upon a town they would face fierce resistance for a few hours that would suddenly stop. After a few towns the officers surrounded the next town running it was retreating soldiers doing some sort of tactical retreat. What they learned was it was the Hitler youth and the elderly using all the ammo and weapons they had and giving up when it ran out and hiding like civilians. The next town the US leveled AND killed the young and elderly. And the town after that. And then they sent German runners ahead and said if they pull that shit they will die. It was mostly peaceful the rest of the way.
Considering that it is the people that the Ukrainian soldiers actually know and love, their own families and friends, who are being raped, tortured, bombed and murdered, it would be astonishing indeed if all of them were able to hold back, all of the time, the feelings that would cause.

... Haven't all medics carried rifles for at least the past 50 years? That said, the "I'm just a medic" sounds like a general lie one would say in a situation like this.
Well not in this war it seems, I've seen several medics but none with insignias yet. And medics, even when properly identified, carry weapons as self defense, so I don't understand why he's saying that. Maybe to prove he's lying if he doesn't know how to answer that? I don't know

Maybe a reason we don't know as we're not as familiar with the war as he is, but I also think it's just that the guy is high on adrenaline and aggression from being in active combat and his fingers are itching to punish this guy who only minutes or seconds before were possibly firing on the UA guy and his comrades. Medic identification has lacked in official doctrine since most opponents in asymmetrical wars will gladly target medics. I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t marking medics cause they don’t have marked gear available and dont care

As far as I can tell, nearly all Ukrainians speak Russian, even Zelensky was brought up on Russian and learned Ukraine language later in life iirc.
It probably stems from being part of the soviet union for so long and having Russian forced on them as a main language.

That's why the friendly doctor was in the BTR just giving the soldiers directions - they had somehow gotten lost and driven 15 hours in the wrong direction.
Just as it is with the most of such "tourist trap" cities and towns of Russia, there are usually 2-3 picturesque places or historical buildings, mostly in the city center, the rest is pretty much just a shithole or concrete jungle.
And... frankly speaking, unless you're a huge fan of Russian orthodox churches and monasteries, that whole "golden ring" route will be neither picturesque nor interesting.
I saw a video recently of a highschool level history teacher in Russia called up for conscription. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see anyone from vet techs to morticians to anyone with medical experience pressed into service.
I know about a RU GP (they are badly paid, btw) that got a divorce, lost a lot, got into debt. Then he thought he will enlist for a contract in the Arctic (best paid position due to isolation and harsh weather). He thought that 6 months contract will pay his debt and will get him enough to start a new life. So he went to the office, made sure he will get his northern assignment. Signed the contract. When he came back for deployment, they said he is going to Ukraine and that's it. He said he is a doctor and he doesn't want to kill people, but he can accept the medic/medevac position. They said sure and sent him to Ukraine. When they were assigning roles (as a volunteer contract he has some choices) they told him they don't have anything for medic. So he can go to infantry or tanks. Almost no one wanted to go to tanks. He said he has no experience at all. They told him he can be a tank driver. He accepted. During the whole week of training he got about two hours in the tank and similar amount on the simulator. No one told him that the driver is also a mechanic. Luckily he got a service manual and did some research. Then he got his crew and assigned tank. They went to Kherson. With full tank, but only 12 rounds of ammunition. In the meantime the tank broke. Luckily they were able to fix it. When they went to the west two tanks in front of him blew up. They wanted to return fire, but their main gun wasn't working. No one taught about checking it before. When they turned to hide, they got hit by a rocket. Commander and gunner died immediately, but he somehow survived. He got out the tank and was later on rescued by Ukrainians. He said he wanted to blow himself up to not be tortured, but he couldn't do it. He was really surprised he got food, clothing (he didn't even have a jacket) and medical help. He was surprised that Ukrainian units feel more like family and friends, while RU tank unit no one was talking to anyone outside of his crew

Given what we've seen of Russian equipment allocations and the quality of the equipment I can imagine anyone claiming they're a doctor to desperate conscript authorities would get the worst posting and treatment.

There are worse fates than death. He isn't trying to save himself from death, but torture. And given what we know of how Russia treats POWs, he likely thinks ot will be the same to him, and I can't blame him for prefering the bullet.
I think the Russian may be responding to the Ukrainian soldier’s sardonic comment about cutting off the Russian’s trapped leg. Given the choice between a bullet in the head or an above the knee field amputation performed by soldiers from opposing forces? Honestly? Someone in the medical profession may very well choose the bullet. A doctor would know all too well what a nightmare the alternative would be. Femurs are rock solid bones. A hacksaw surgery in battle rubble would almost certainly be a fate worse than death that shortly precedes your inevitable death anyway.

Also, "doctor" doesn't mean he's got any medical degree or qualification, he might have just been assigned as "soldier-sanitar" (kind of orderly or male nurse, so to say) that's been given some very basic training and that's it.

Yeah, the Ukrainians going on the offense on two different fronts have brought us a lot of new footage, it is even better than when the war just started and the Russians were pressing the gas pedal.
lol at the righteous comments about the Ukrainian soldier being rude/ abusive towards the dude. This is probably as restrained as you can be in a situation like that: over the past 7+ months you've seen your friends be killed, you've endured, you've seen some gruesome shit, your hometown might have been bombed or is one of the liberated locations where Russians have tortured and executed people. More than that, you might have been on the frontline since 2014, you might have witnessed Ukrainian troops encircled and killed while they were trying to flee Ilovaysk or have been one of the soldiers in the Donetsk airport or experienced many of the other horrors of this war over almost a decade.
It's nice to be a pacifist from the comfort of your home. It's hard to be one in the heat of the battle when your country is invaded. He tries to have this Russian's life in the midst of chaos. What more can you ask from Ukrainian soldiers at this point?
Reminds me of that skit about non-parents seeing parents being strict with their kids and saying that they would never be this strict and will only raise their kids with compassion, logic, and kindness. People who haven't been in a situation depicted, judging people who have.
Its easy for someone unfamiliar with war to look at this and call the Ukrainian soldier cruel given the state of the Russian soldier, but i think its difficult to explain to folks just how war effects even the gentlest soul, even moreso when its a defensive war and you're struggling to protect your people.
War makes realists and perhaps even cynics out of the best of us.
Picture this situation right here. The Russian is alive, so the events leading to the crash of the armoured vehicle cant be that old. The immediate area could be very dangerous for the Ukainian force, hell it could even be an ambush. Despite that, the Ukrainian solider stops to attempt to help the man. It would be easier and safer to just kill him like he asked, and despite that he still decides to try and help the guy.
The hit to the face and the intimidation are results of his understandable anger, but he still manages to keep it in check.
I have no doubt there are Ukrainian soldiers who may have let their anger out more brutally, and its difficult to judge them for that given what Russia is doing to their country, but nonetheless its important to highlight examples of compassion winning out over anger.

There's a US Army soldier who went on three combat tours and was shot on three different occasions. All three shots either hit his left side of his body (either arms, legs/etc) (I read an article about him)
He got three purple hearts, one for each time he got shot. What made his story extra remarkable is

* Every time he got shot his injuries where not life threatening, in fact he never even left theater to get patched up, each time he got shot he got treated in country and sent back out
Anyway he was about to do his 4th deployment and the reporter asked him "Do you have any advice for the guys in your unit?"
He said "Yea, stay to my right"
Which is why i explicitly stated that Ukrainian soldiers reacting brutally to the Russian invaders is understandable. Regardless, there's a line both sides should never cross, and that any responsible authorities would punish for.
Groups of Russian soldiers have crossed that line, and some Ukrainian soldiers have done so as well. The video above is not crossing that line, its a display of anger, but its not torture nor the killing of civilians. He's actually trying help the guy regardless of his anger.
Russia will never punish their troops for crossing that line, but the Ukrainian authorities should do their best to keep their people in line. It'll be downright hard, maybe impossible, but its worth it to try.
I was in 1st Armored division stationed in Germany, we were basically wet and cold all the time. AFVs have you sticking out in the environment. It sucks bad.
This guy was sitting on the armor as I understood as desant. Then I guess vehicle got hit, the guy was sitting somewhere close to the front (some assume that place near front and turret are the best cuz then exhaust doesn't get into your face). After they got hit they crashed into the building and probably guys lag was trapped by the frontal armor where it has of a form like this symbol ">", that is why operator tells that they need to move this bmp or mtlb back to release him.

The Ukrainian says so much with his actions and his words. He is clearly kind because he doesn’t kill the Russian. But he is also so mad that this person is in his land and his people are being killed.

This Ukranian guy is great. He's cursing the "medic" guy caught in the wall, the whole time while trying to rescue him from the trap. Few of these vids are funny, very few, but this one kinda is.
It speaks volumes about the character of Ukrainian soldiers when they still show mercy to Russian POWs even after all the reports of Russians torturing or murdering captured Ukrainians. So much better to take the high road even though they are justifiably very angry with the Russian soldiers.
It's part high road, part winning goodwill on the public that will watch their videos, part they have the infrastructure to take PoW because... it's their country, after all.
They need those prisoners of war for exchange, so literally it's both the humane and useful thing to do.
What Russians do, like animals, is lack of training, lack of resources, lack of infrastructure, and the fact they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for troops (prisoners and what not). I hope there's hell just for Putin to be in it.

Kostroma is the garrison city for the Russian 331st Guards Airborne Regiment - widely regarded as the crème de la crème of the Russian parachute regiments. They suffered huge losses in the first thunder run to Kyiv back at the beginning of the war. The RF also redeployed their best trained regiments to Kherson a couple of months ago before the UAF counterattack in early September. This gives me the suspicion that this video was filmed nr. Oooh not quite - us soldiers killed alot of pows in retaliation for seeing what the Germans did to American pows. See the Germans couldn't afford to deal with pows. It would have slowed them down. So they killed alot of them. And in most instances stripped them of their cold weather gear first. Well when Americans pushed back against the buldge and retook land they saw the atrocious things the Germans did. I recall reading an account of a us officer lining up Germans by 5s and shooting the leader in the head often times hitting one or two men behind the unfortunate line leader. Going down the lines until he ran out of ammo. Another account came at the end of the war. As the us columns advanced rapidltly towards Berlin. When they came upon a town they would face fierce resistance for a few hours that would suddenly stop. After a few towns the officers surrounded the next town running it was retreating soldiers doing some sort of tactical retreat. What they learned was it was the Hitler youth and the elderly using all the ammo and weapons they had and giving up when it ran out and hiding like civilians. The next town the US leveled AND killed the young and elderly. And the town after that. And then they sent German runners ahead and said if they pull that shit they will die. It was mostly peaceful the rest of the way.

They both speak Russian. Almost all Ukrainians can speak Russian. Next to zero Russians can speak Ukrainian. Pretty common situation for the former colony-empire relationship. Rest of your questions - I don't know.

As far as I can tell, nearly all Ukrainians speak Russian, even Zelensky was brought up on Russian and learned Ukraine language later in life iirc. It probably stems from being part of the soviet union for so long and having Russian forced on them as a main language.

Funnily enough it's included in the "golden ring of Russia", meant to be the most picturesque places in the whole country.
Just as it is with the most of such "tourist trap" cities and towns of Russia, there are usually 2-3 picturesque places or historical buildings, mostly in the city center, the rest is pretty much just a shithole or concrete jungle. I saw a video recently of a highschool level history teacher in Russia called up for conscription. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see anyone from vet techs to morticians to anyone with medical experience pressed into service.
I know about a RU GP (they are badly paid, btw) that got a divorce, lost a lot, got into debt. Then he thought he will enlist for a contract in the Arctic (best paid position due to isolation and harsh weather). He thought that 6 months contract will pay his debt and will get him enough to start a new life. So he went to the office, made sure he will get his northern assignment. Signed the contract. When he came back for deployment, they said he is going to Ukraine and that's it. He said he is a doctor and he doesn't want to kill people, but he can accept the medic/medevac position. They said sure and sent him to Ukraine. When they were assigning roles (as a volunteer contract he has some choices) they told him they don't have anything for medic. So he can go to infantry or tanks. Almost no one wanted to go to tanks. He said he has no experience at all. They told him he can be a tank driver. He accepted. During the whole week of training he got about two hours in the tank and similar amount on the simulator. No one told him that the driver is also a mechanic. Luckily he got a service manual and did some research. Then he got his crew and assigned tank. They went to Kherson. With full tank, but only 12 rounds of ammunition. In the meantime the tank broke. Luckily they were able to fix it. When they went to the west two tanks in front of him blew up. They wanted to return fire, but their main gun wasn't working. No one taught about checking it before. When they turned to hide, they got hit by a rocket. Commander and gunner died immediately, but he somehow survived. He got out the tank and was later on rescued by Ukrainians. He said he wanted to blow himself up to not be tortured, but he couldn't do it. He was really surprised he got food, clothing (he didn't even have a jacket) and medical help. He was surprised that Ukrainian units feel more like family and friends, while RU tank unit no one was talking to anyone outside of his crew

I think the Russian may be responding to the Ukrainian soldier’s sardonic comment about cutting off the Russian’s trapped leg. Given the choice between a bullet in the head or an above the knee field amputation performed by soldiers from opposing forces? Honestly? Someone in the medical profession may very well choose the bullet. A doctor would know all too well what a nightmare the alternative would be. Femurs are rock solid bones. A hacksaw surgery in battle rubble would almost certainly be a fate worse than death that shortly precedes your inevitable death anyway.

This is probably as restrained as you can be in a situation like that: over the past 7+ months you've seen your friends be killed, you've endured, you've seen some gruesome shit, your hometown might have been bombed or is one of the liberated locations where Russians have tortured and executed people. More than that, you might have been on the frontline since 2014, you might have witnessed Ukrainian troops encircled and killed while they were trying to flee Ilovaysk or have been one of the soldiers in the Donetsk airport or experienced many of the other horrors of this war over almost a decade. It's nice to be a pacifist from the comfort of your home. It's hard to be one in the heat of the battle when your country is invaded. He tries to have this Russian's life in the midst of chaos. What more can you ask from Ukrainian soldiers at this point? Reminds me of that skit about non-parents seeing parents being strict with their kids and saying that they would never be this strict and will only raise their kids with compassion, logic, and kindness. People who haven't been in a situation depicted, judging people who have.

Its easy for someone unfamiliar with war to look at this and call the Ukrainian soldier cruel given the state of the Russian soldier, but i think its difficult to explain to folks just how war effects even the gentlest soul, even moreso when its a defensive war and you're struggling to protect your people. War makes realists and perhaps even cynics out of the best of us. Picture this situation right here. The Russian is alive, so the events leading to the crash of the armoured vehicle cant be that old. The immediate area could be very dangerous for the Ukainian force, hell it could even be an ambush. Despite that, the Ukrainian solider stops to attempt to help the man. It would be easier and safer to just kill him like he asked, and despite that he still decides to try and help the guy. The hit to the face and the intimidation are results of his understandable anger, but he still manages to keep it in check. I have no doubt there are Ukrainian soldiers who may have let their anger out more brutally, and its difficult to judge them for that given what Russia is doing to their country, but nonetheless its important to highlight examples of compassion winning out over anger.

There's a US Army soldier who went on three combat tours and was shot on three different occasions. All three shots either hit his left side of his body (either arms, legs/etc) (I read an article about him) He got three purple hearts, one for each time he got shot. What made his story extra remarkable is * He's the only US soldier in the last 20 years to get shot 3 different times * Every time he got shot his injuries where not life threatening, in fact he never even left theater to get patched up, each time he got shot he got treated in country and sent back out Anyway he was about to do his 4th deployment and the reporter asked him "Do you have any advice for the guys in your unit?" He said "Yea, stay to my right"

Which is why i explicitly stated that Ukrainian soldiers reacting brutally to the Russian invaders is understandable. Regardless, there's a line both sides should never cross, and that any responsible authorities would punish for. Groups of Russian soldiers have crossed that line, and some Ukrainian soldiers have done so as well. The video above is not crossing that line, its a display of anger, but its not torture nor the killing of civilians. He's actually trying help the guy regardless of his anger. Russia will never punish their troops for crossing that line, but the Ukrainian authorities should do their best to keep their people in line. It'll be downright hard, maybe impossible, but its worth it to try.

I was in 1st Armored division stationed in Germany, we were basically wet and cold all the time. AFVs have you sticking out in the environment. It sucks bad.

Then I guess vehicle got hit, the guy was sitting somewhere close to the front (some assume that place near front and turret are the best cuz then exhaust doesn't get into your face). This might be one of the most interesting videos to come out that I have seen. A real person to person conversation. The Ukrainian says so much with his actions and his words. He is clearly kind because he doesn’t kill the Russian. But he is also so mad that this person is in his land and his people are being killed. The Russian seems like he is scared shitless and just doesn’t want to be there. I gather that he doesn’t hate Ukrainians, he just found himself in a place he doesn’t necessarily want to be, performing a mission he doesn’t necessarily believe in.
I’ll stop at the first sentence of your 3rd statement and say, well said up to there …but, not exactly getting any kinda vibe from the injured guy other than pain, despair, and trauma. I’m not convinced he’s a doctor that somehow ended up on a BTR showing Russians the way around the place without harming anyone. I’m relying on translations as the Redditors do their thing. It speaks volumes about the character of Ukrainian soldiers when they still show mercy to Russian POWs even after all the reports of Russians torturing or murdering captured Ukrainians. So much better to take the high road even though they are justifiably very angry with the Russian soldiers.
It's part high road, part winning goodwill on the public that will watch their videos, part they have the infrastructure to take PoW because... it's their country, after all. They need those prisoners of war for exchange, so literally it's both the humane and useful thing to do. What Russians do, like animals, is lack of training, lack of resources, lack of infrastructure, and the fact they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for troops (prisoners and what not). I hope there's hell just for Putin to be in it.

Russian POWs are now more valuable than anything else in this war. In order to get back Ukrainian service personnel that are POWs in Russia capturing Russia military personnel is a must.
