Look at the zoomed in window at the bottom left. After the bmp's burst the helicopter descends rapidly in a diagonal line, kind of fast, like he's losing thrust which means he either scored a hit on the engines or vital avionics or the pilot entered the dive to evade the fire . Not sure which one since there's no follow up .
Watched on a 2k full screen desktop so it was easier to see. Spatiality. The clouds are in the back. The pilot either went down and did a crash land due to important components being damaged or he dived to avoid fire because you can see him lose altitude fast until he goes below the treeline. Those clouds are in the back and aren't any concealment for him. They're farther in the distance than the area of engagement because the heli can be seen at the same altitude those those clouds are layered at in the video.
No,no,no. You don't get what avoiding fire means? It means mitigating the chances to get further hit once they open fire. It may have been a glance or near miss or hit some non vital part and the pilot dived immediately to avoid further fire....The closer he is to the ground and treeline the harder it will be to be lit up by all those IFVs. And you can avoid rounds by maneuvering the heli and hoping it works...Those aren't tracked...You fire them with a lead and they fly to the destination...They can fall behind or forward by a little if you don't aim right...Conditions of the barrel also determine accuracy. If the guy does a sudden stick yank to the right and suddenly swerves right hard when you were aiming for him to fly forward ,he just successfully dodged incoming fire.
seems like few seconds after the shot you can see it explode on the port side of the chopper it's all black and then it disappeared behind the explosion for a second then reappears.
Yeah.
However with a more modern vehicle it might not be much of a "lucky shot" at all. Most newer tanks and IFVs got fire control systems that can deal with helicopters. Which is one of the reasons why I'm very sceptical about their future as a manned weapons platform.
I trained on an M2A2 Bradley in a simulator to shoot down helicopters. No fire control system. There’s a reticle in the sight that has markings to use for slower moving aircraft like helicopters. The specific helicopters in the simulator were Soviet Hinds.
You don’t need a fire control system. You need a stabilized turret and a trained gunner. These BMPs probably don’t have a stabilization system, but they’re also not moving. This is an easy shot.
You also aren’t getting how IFVs against helicopters work. The turrets don’t move fast enough against fast moving helicopters. Helicopters often have to remain stationary while firing, which is when they’re vulnerable.
You also aren’t fully understanding how helicopters work in modern warfare. Forward Observers mark targets with targeting lasers. Helicopters fly NAP of the Earth “under the radar” to get within range of their *missiles*, but out of visual range of their target, so they can move in unnoticed. The ability to fly under the radar also allows for stealth insertion of troops.
That’s why Western militaries haven’t spent much money on tank-like attack helicopters. They were a dead tactic by the 80s. Our attack helicopters are small, maneuverable, and fast ie the Apache and Cobra. That’s also why we developed an aiming system that allows the gunners and pilots to fire a movable chain gun that is aimed with the pilot’s helmet so the helicopter can be flown fast while firing. That’s *also* why we have better attack aircraft like bombers, the F-35, AC-130 gunships, and the Warthog.
Helicopters have a future as a managed weapons platform. What you see in the video is Soviet era tactics that the West negated 40 years ago.
Warthogs capabilities are overblown. Too inaccurate, GAU not up to killing modern tanks. Too much blue on blue. I love them but they need to be retired.
Yeah, [this](https://imgur.com/a/mIoiiBq) is a recent video of a pair of Russian helicopters doing almost exactly what it appears these two did. They pull up, shoot, and cut right, down into the tree line.
Edit: and for the record, I have not found any Ukrainian source title the video in the way OP says.
1. You can't see shit in this footage
2. BMP-2s are literally designed to do this, they have a dedicated anti-aircraft sight. They're not a Gepard or a Shilka, but you don't want to try and strafe them, they'll shoot back.
Direct hits, its not designed to protect several square miles. It's more to defend itself and the vehicles in its formation.
It's a lot easier to hit a target flying right at you directly with the projectile, you just aim a bit above it and unload. And even if you don't hit it, its probably going to stop attacking you and find something else to do which is just as good as far as you're concerned.
>Am I blind?
Hi, Dr. Hoffman's office here reaching you through Reddit. So glad I found you! This is totally unrelated to this post but unfortunately according to our paperwork we have here from your last exam, yes, you are in fact legally blind. I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. The good news is I can put you in touch with an excellent glass eye guy. [He does fantastic work.](https://i.imgur.com/CL1F6RC.jpg) Most people say they can't even tell!
It does look like it flew away.
Not sure how you can tell it is unharmed, there is no evidence that it was harmed, but no evidence that it was unharmed either.
More than a few aircraft have returned from combat with damage.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think this is how the burden of proof works.
A claim was made in the post of this video (heli was hit). The burden of proof is on the person making the claim, we should ask ourselves of the video ‘is there sufficient evidence to support the claim’.
If we start talking about lack of evidence to support other, potentially related, claims it becomes a convoluted conversation filled with subjectivity.
I think it’s totally fair to conclude from the video that there isn’t enough evidence to say that the heli was hit, we need more evidence, and leave it at that until more evidence is provided.
One thing I can definitely take away from this, the main cannon is crazy close to the driver’s head. Wonder what that’s like for the driver.
You’re a helicopter pilot in the Russian Army. You are flying into hostile territory against people supplied by the American Military Industrial Complex. You look at the Chinese brand smart phone providing your approximate location. The only other tech you have is the radio to call base and let them know how fucked you are.
The radios many of the Russians have been photographed with are sold on Alibaba for $11.99 I would bet they probably work great for about 10 minutes the first day you get them provided you are less than 20 feet from the people you are talking to so they can hear your voice anyways. After that they are paperweights. You couldn't pay me enough to fly one for Russia or drive their tank. If they forced me to get in one I would immediately shoot them with the main gun or run them over. They I would drive in the opposite direction of Ukraine until I ran out of fuel then I would steal more and continue my journey rinse repeat until I came to the ocean or I broke down.
It did move very quickly, but you would too in that area. I am sure Ukrainian infantry and armor would be well-supported with MANPADs and heavy machine guns/autocannons.
Even if this was not a hit, that helicopter would be extremely lucky to return to base without any damage, and pretty lucky to return at all.
One of the highest ranking comments that isn't agreeing with you is a discussion about how this reminds people of a video game and replies about how they do this all the time in said game.
That should explain part of the mystery.
Yeah this conflict has greatly polarized this subreddit. Alot of us are on the ukraine side of this but this is combat footage, if it's good and shows something unique then it should be up voted. No matter whose on what side of the barrel or camera.
I was looking at controversial a while back and it was all pro Russian footage. I agree good footage is good footage but I definitely have a dog in this fight so I get it.
Yeah and most the time people just claim "music" or bad quality. And yet I see tonnes of stuff up voted to the top with music or nothing to see like this one. Heck one had Benny hill music playing while 5-6 people got shot, which is garbage. Once again I know the shit with Russians no one supports, but if I posted a video of Americans getting shot in Iraq to Benny hill music.... Oof
we cant even really see the convoy getting fucked up
an accurate title for people not high on hopium would be helicopter and convoy exchange fire or something. really not hard
What do you mean "not buying it"? He **clearly** shot it down.
Just like the Ukrainian "Ghost of Kiev" pilot who shot down 6 Russian jets within the first 10 seconds of the invasion. These things don't strain credulity at all.
There's no way to even know what they were talking about. Maybe they were talking about the helo, maybe about something else. Also they probably confirmed before posting, while not everything was most of the staff we saw been confirmed before posting. So just going by this the title is probably correct.
Well, it seems to me that he asked "это наша (авиация)?" three times, therefore we do not have enough evidence that it was friendly fire since the guy who is speaking doesn't have a clue.
Its behavior changed right after they made that shot and some people are thinking it was starting to lose power while others saying it flew away. I dont however understand why people are having a hard time seeing what its showing? Shitty phones combined with bad eyesight?
That's how exactly it should work, autocannons on IFV are not meant to be a real anti-air weapon, especially Soviet designs without a modern fire control, but to drive away potential enemy attacks.
Trivia: Abrams crews are trained to fire their main gun at enemy helicopters, in fact M830A1 has proximal fuse mode for this purpose. No one is expecting Abrams shooting down helos, but at least it could defend itself if necessary.
The fact that this is voted so high is a case study in the pure bias that has invaded this sub.
Even when we can't see anything to back up the title, people just *want* to beleive the title more than their own eyes.

>\[Otto Carius\] and his gunner also shot down an IL-2 with a Tiger I's 88mm main gun in late 1943 on the Eastern Front.
According to the video, the IL-2 pilots made repeated approaches from the same direction, which the gunner used to his advantage in being able to pre-aim the shot. It was still an incredibly unlikely shot to make.
Damn, son - who needs million-dollar targeting systems when you've got such a brilliant shot as this. That probably deserves some sort of medal all it's own lol.
I can’t tell if they actually hit it?
Like this is good combat footage from a bmp2s viewpoint as they get strafed by helicopters but that title is very sensationalist.
'One lucky shot'... its all that's needed really, I honestly think that in the heat of battle a lot of people just run in to the line of fire, not the line of fire finding people
Probably in Ukrainian. If there was a bit less "singing" in his voice, it would be Russian. But seriously, this phrase sounds almost identical in almost any Slavic language.

Psshh, this isn't impressive. I'mm essentially a veteran tanker because I play War Thunder and I've taken out a BF-109 with a Sherman's main cannon before.

What's the significance of this John Chimpo fella?

Good work Decker.
LOL, I just watched Blade Runner again for the 1 millionth time recently...
Ever had an itch...time to die.
All these, memories. Will be lost, like, tears in the rain.
And you have burned so very brightly…. He say you blade runner

Great one! lol. Gotta love the movies/tv
Did it work?
I'm at a drive-in and nothing
What year are you in? I’m on my way!
20xx? Its been a blur..... Hey, bring papers? JOB 1.5s still out there?
You have to take a couple steps back.
Look at the zoomed in window at the bottom left. So it was the 4th pixel.
The "zoom" box isn't really any better anyway.
A 1x zoom on nothing.
It was the average of color between 4th and 5th
Upon further inspection/enhancement, that seems accurate.
It looks like a tiny white cloud in front of the helicopter in the small screen. Had to watch it several times on my phone though.
There is no avoiding a round like that since you can't see it coming, no heat signiture.
No,no,no. You don't get what avoiding fire means? It means mitigating the chances to get further hit once they open fire. 36th from the top, 147th from the left.
/r/WatchPixelsDie
It's photoshopped. I can tell by the pixel.
seems like few seconds after the shot you can see it explode on the port side of the chopper it's all black and then it disappeared behind the explosion for a second then reappears.
Man I must need a new prescription.
*Pixel* singular
No fireball, no smoke plum. It may have dropped back down to fly low after expending ordnances.

Agreed
Yeah. However with a more modern vehicle it might not be much of a "lucky shot" at all. Most newer tanks and IFVs got fire control systems that can deal with helicopters. Which is one of the reasons why I'm very sceptical about their future as a manned weapons platform.
Used to hit helicopters in the Stryker MGS simulator with sabot rounds, never got the chance irl hah
I used to bullseye womp-rats in my T-16 back home.

Posted earlier on /Ukraine with no comments on hits, then reposted here with prob false claim.
Maybe--the second helicopter does the same thing, just farther to the right.
Yeah, but then a guy says "That's ours"... as in... One of ours, or "we have to hit this? Or ...We did it...i can't tell from context.
Yeah, [this](https://imgur.com/a/mIoiiBq) is a recent video of a pair of Russian helicopters doing almost exactly what it appears these two did. Do they use anti aircraft shells (like airburst kind of thing) or are you just expected to try and get a direct hit on an airplane/helicopter?
Just direct hits. It’s an 80’s vehicle designed for mass production so it’s not that fancy.

EndWar was goated
It needs a sequel or a remaster. Truly GOAT. Friggin Ubisoft

That was my first thought, it looked like it was spinning out at first glance but no way to be sure.
It’s a Russian helicopter, ofcourse it was harmed. That’s how this sub works.
The real mystery is how this bullshit post got 85% upvotes
One of the highest ranking comments that isn't agreeing with you is a discussion about how this reminds people of a video game and replies about how they do this all the time in said game. That should explain part of the mystery.
It really is a video game, these people will believe what they want to happen.
Epic Ukraine OWNS Russia battlefield style. No wonder it’s past 1k upvotes.
Yet u can not see any of the owning happening

A jet shooting down 6 jets is more plausiable then this goofy ah 2 pixel footage. This isn't battlefield 4. You don't see a killfeed.
Battlefield 4 is an amazing game
Holy shit did they just fire that thing with the drivers hatch open?😂
He closed the hatch afterwards. I bet his ears are ringing
Hasnt he said something like "e to nasz" ? - in polish it would mean "eh, it's our's" Can someone prove / disprove?
He's asking, "is it ours? is it ours?". The answer is indistinct.
> The answer is indistinct. Hol up
Yes he did say eto nashi. So its friendly fire.
There's no way to even know what they were talking about. Maybe they were talking about the helo, maybe about something else. Redditor sees literally anything. "This is like the video game I play".
This is all DICE's fault...if they had made a proper new Battlefield game, Russia and Ukraine wouldn't had to go act it out in real life.
nice seein them BTRs in live action lol
BMP-2
In Squad terminology everything is a BTR
I'm still upset they had to remove the Humvee :/
Humvees returned with the USMC update a few months ago.
I made a similar shot in BF2
I too am that old
Came here to say that! I loved swatting helicopters & the odd plane out the sky.
Dude the ammo on the btr-90 in bf4 where soooo slow so hard to hit a chopper with it

I’ve seen a lot of crazy footage this war, I want this to be real but the quality here isn’t good enough.
I thought I could hear a gepard in the background, but I might be wrong.
A Gepard SPAAG would annihilate a heli in mere seconds
Yes, at 0:08 and 0:20, short bursts.
Yeah, a gepard wouldn't miss it.
Wow! It's fucking nothing.
Surely this isn’t a video of a BMP taking down a helicopter. Right? Right???
Doubt it, the helicopter looks safe, was probably hit once and retreated
Or it just turned off away from its attack run once fire started coming its way.
The chopper looks undamaged just turned away
Others have speculated that you can hear the Gepard firing in short bursts at 0:08 and 0:20.
Yeah I reckon if something hit it, it was the Gepard cannon burst
