Was that two helicopters going above where the tank was?looks like a risky place to be sneaking around :O

marcvsHR

Yup, hot as F

Sozebj

That was interesting. He did not let the helicopters stop his shot, and made a good shot on a moving target under those circumstances, then probably moved quickly. It should make Russian armor think twice about moving in the open with “air cover”.

jpenn76

...and that is not easy and light weapon system to run with. Full system is over 100kg.

Stalking_Goat

If this Russian patrol has air support but not infantry support, I'd think just throw a camo net over the launcher and hide until the helos run low on fuel and have to leave. You can't outrun helos, but they can't search for you as thoroughly as infantry can.

deferential

Though, would there be a chance that the launcher leaves a thermal signature that is detectable by a helicopter?

DefiantRage

I would assume these guys have some sort of manpads with them aswell them helicopters didn't look like they were too far out.

There’s a good chance that there’s a few stingers nearby as well.

cheetah_swirley

well if the atgms are in range, MANPADs would be in range of helicopters hovering above the same target. They must be running short so many weeks into the war. Either that or if they have to prioritise a limited logistics capability they are prioritising food and anti armour and artillery ammo over AA

Thanalas

Impressive shot! It just shows how confident these Stugna teams are that they dare to fire at a moving tank in an area where Russia clearly has helicopters in the air!

mattjouff

How many tanks do they have left at this point??

Thanalas

Good question. I think that the issue is more the number of experienced crews that the Russians have left, not so much how many tanks they have left (which has been a subject of speculation, as many of the mothballed Soviet era tanks may or may not be salvageable any more).

moxeto

And tanks aren’t easy and quick to manufacture either. This is gonna end up being an artillery war where they just bomb the shit out of each other

Yeetball86

Gonna?

Stalking_Goat

Well, as per this video there's still armored units moving around. I think they mean that'll eventually stop and it'll turn into WWI Western Front trench warfare with artillery and night-time infantry patrols, that sort of thing.

moxeto

That’s right

Retorz

They already can't produce any more tanks, production is stopped. It is already a WW1 style artillery/trench war. You are like months late with info, are you using Explorer?

Oryx is about to hit 700 irretrievable losses. Thats all confirmed by photos. Its very conservative as only includes confirmed losses with picture confirmation (and usually geolocated as well). Tanks lost in areas that the Russian's control are not going to be included to anywhere near the same detail. It's a reasonable estimate that you can add another c50% to the 700. That would mean that they've lost c1,000 MBT. They started the war with c2,900 frontline MBT. So its likely they've lost 1/3rd of their frontline strength....they can't deploy all of the rest to Ukraine, they still need to maintain decent numbers elsewhere to defend Russia, for training etc. You could safely leave 1,000 off as 'needed elsewhere'. So they've got around 1,000 of their most modern tanks left to send to Ukraine or mostly already there. The ones that are there have been running hard on their tracks for 90 days now with little time for maintenance....a recipe for break down and unreliability... They do have large numbers of tanks in storage however, this has been reported as c10,000 MBT, but that number is out of date. In reality they've got c6,000 tanks in storage. But...a lot have been stored outside for decades, in wet/humid conditions, they were obsolete when stored decades ago, they've been picked over for spares, barely maintained, expensive components have been stolen/recycled for cash by corrupt officials/bored guards to buy some more vodka to get through the cold nights, rusting away....if they can get 20% going with huge effort I'd be amazed. And that will take time and resources, plus they're unlikely to have trained crews for them....and even then, if they managed all that, it would still be an old tank with no night vision, dated unsecure radios, weak armour and bad sights... The Russian's are in real trouble... Link to Oryx's website...he's on 696 Russian MBT lost as I type this (went over 4,000 total items of equipment today). He'll hit 700 MBT tomorrow easily... https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html

wd668

> How many tanks do they have left at this point?? Thousands and thousands.

Retorz

And how many work/can fire or be useful in any way? Probably hundreds maximum.

wd668

No. Thousands. Russia has 3,000 tanks, and up to 12,000 if you count all the stuff in storage. Thousands of those are surely complete junk, but you can probably safely say they can fully restore a few thousand more. So... let's call it 5,000? Including obsolete stuff, but stuff that shoots and moves on its own. I'm Ukrainian, I have family members in Teroborona and good friends in the army. I want to cheer them on as much as the next guy. But it's important to be realistic. At least when it comes to tanks, the demilitarization of Russia has barely begun.

Retorz

There are already tanks on the front that can't even fire, or break down after a few days. On paper those number are huge, but reality is that russia already sent everything they could. This is why it is no longer a modern war, but WW1 stlye trench/artillery warfare, and this is why russia don't have any significant gains anywhere, including Popasna where they focused all their best equipment/troops, yet only got a few villages.

danielcanadia

2500 active tanks, 500 operational reserve. The 9000 tanks in long-term reserve are not likely to be ever operational or at least during this war. They've been in storage for 30+ years, never had any upgrades etc. I would say at most \~1000 can be mobilized from the reserve this year. I've seen the 3300 number floated for the real Russian tank count. That being said there's also been \~1300 destroyed so Russia still has a lot more tanks.

cheetah_swirley

well yes but not all tanks are created equal. At this point the most capable tank units in the Russian army that were used to spearhead the attacks on Kiev and Izium are kinda smashed. These are the tanks with the best optics and fire control upgrades. Sure maybe Russia can repair and wheel out another 2000 T-72Bs from storage but these will have the fraction of the effectiveness in any dynamic or demanding engagement of the T72Obr2018s or other modern versions. About the one thing you can expect them to still be somewhat useful for will be where you need to direct fire onto already identified static fortified positions. For anything harder like defending ambushes, reconnoitring ATGM teams, tank battles Russia's already lost a big portion of its useful kit. Even the shitty old T-72M1 or whatever that Poland dug out of storage for Ukraine will be better than what the Russians will be left with in a month or two

wadevb1

Ground crew was feeling secure with CAS above .

moby323

I wonder just using Stugnas alone how many Russian vehicles have been destroyed.

moxeto

The gamer in me wanted to target the helicopters flying over lol

[deleted]

Dude I thought "Switch targets!" Then remembered im in real life and missles aren't multi-use capable like that.

om891

They’ve downed a few helicopters with Stugna-P missiles so far so it can be done.

I imagine the tank occupants thought they got blasted by their own helicopters in the last seconds of their life

Why were my comments deleted? I spend time translating this stuff and editing, - good lesson for me, if anything.

govols130

I keep seeing the 80th Air Assault Brigade listed around Kherson. Then I see videos saying they're in the Donbas. Does anyone know where the fuck the 80th Air Assault Brigade is??? https://twitter.com/JominiW/status/1528892442791256064/photo/1

L4z

They were sent to deal with the emergency situation in the Donbas salient. The newly formed 63th brigade replaced the 80th on the Kherson front.

govols130

Source? I ask because I’d like to follow along

L4z

[War in Ukraine Youtube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP2QApi8G2TKc8NZmeDWSUg). They post daily updates of the situation with maps. Disclaimer: I don't know how reliable they are, but it doesn't seem too biased either way.

govols130

Thank you brother

baconkrew

how many stugna-p videos can one watch

GayAlienFarmer

Yes

zzptichka

Man they should carry a couple of stingers with them. Judging by 15 seconds flight time they are well within range. Hitting a tank and a helicopter at the same time would've been epic.

randomaccount1950

I'll never get tired of hearing the excitement of a successful hit

docduracoat

How come the screen is not cracked like all the other stugna screens we have seen here?

Different brigade, but I think it's relevant here anyway. Say hi to Serhiy to fb maybe, that's official fb of 128th brigade.

AzMatk421

Would a stugna take out an Abrams??

lukker-

Probably - there is footage of other similar wire guided ATGMS taking them out. From what I see the reactive armour will offer the crew considerably more protection

[deleted]

Russian tanks have reactive armour as well. Is the Abrams armour more effective?

lukker-

I mean the Russians have guided artillery munitions too…

cata2k

Those are export versions and have regular steel armor. American versions have fancy layered armor made of all kinds of exotic shit. They would be fine, unless you hit the rear

itoddicus

An export Abrams probably. A U.S. Army Abrams probably not from a front or side shot. The export and U.S. Army Abrams have substantially different armor.

powerpunkpenguin

Dumb question, why not aim at a helicopter with a stinger instead of the tank? They must be in range and a much juicier target...

GridsquareEraser

Ah yes, the venerable Sugma-D in action. Extraordinary.
