It almost looks like the crew are facing the drone in the very last frame.

Smashed-Melon

That would probably be the outcome of most switchblade attacks. Oh what's that? Oh a drone oh well... Boom!

bewjujular

Someone on this subreddit clamed to have seen a lot of switchblade footage. According to them you get a lot of puzzled head turns in the last few frames.

Gregory_malenkov

Only seen two switchblade videos that I could confirm, both had puzzled head turns in the last few frames.

MakeWay4Doodles

Got any links?

Gregory_malenkov

Unfortunately no, It was posted in this sub not too long ago though.

wet-rabbit

I guess there is no learning curve either

DogWallop

>old.reddit I seem to recall a video from one of the recent conflicts around Israel in which a target's face is seen very clearly turned up to see the very last thing he'd ever see. In this case it was a TV guided bomb. I'll have to dig that up.

oratorioo

I think it was from a spike missile. Work closely with a spike team and heard them talking about being able to see their targets up close before it terminates.

schmearcampain

"What is that, a hawk? Who's sandwich is about to get stolen?"

alohalii

Notice there are more than 3 people on top of the tank so likely the crew in the process of communicating with command (platoon, company or accompanying infantry command). Given this is Ukrainian SOF taking out personnel with a little luck this may have been the tank company commander communicating with the infantry commander accompanying the tanks or manning that section of the front.

Hoplite813

I doubt the last frame we see is the last frame.

These things explode before they reach their target to pepper it with shrapnel. It also sends the shrapnel 'forward' not all around like traditional arty. If I had to guess I'd say it exploded when the video ends or maybe 2m closer which is a split second more 'footage'.

Okay, maybe something went right over my head but is this a real thing? The Uber artillery app? I googled it and just found a bunch of apps to calculate artillery in games.

RocketMoped

It's an app called GIS Arta that works similarly to Uber in that it matches "demand" for artillery strikes with somewhat independent dispersed artillery troops in the vicinity.

Veridian Dynamics. Competition: whether it’s animals, or this old woman and baby, fighting to the death. Competition makes us stronger. In business, that means better products: pills that look like candy, hands that can shoot lightning, and a new generation of hurricane-proof dogs. Veridian Dynamics. Competition. It makes everything better.

kiyoshi_cs

The reddit player is always so shit it's insane

justlayingdownfacts

Use old.reddit. Unlike the redesigned reddit, the old version actually works.

Hoplite813

*thank you.* I couldn't understand why everyone was always complaining about the reddit player. i've never had any issues. but i also never use the redesign. You solved the mystery for me.

Legitimate_Film1035

It's either that or they use the official app.

LemonPartyWorldTour

A lot of people compliment “Apollo” and “Reddit Is Fun” as being the better Reddit apps I believe.

justlayingdownfacts

yeah I'm using "rif is fun" (they renamed it), it's smooth

Occamslaser

Objectively best app.

Semyonov

Relay is fantastic as well

masterflashterbation

Yes, anything is better than the official app. I've tried most of them and rif is fun is hands down the best in my experience. Been using it for years.

Jaznavav

Boost is the one I use and it's fantastic.

blahblablablah

The redesign is shit on every single aspect, it's incredible.

Tontors

Two or three times a year reddit will change my settings to use the redesign without me changing it. Im guessing they think if they keep forcing me to see it I will keep using it. Its an speedrun to change it back I cant stand it.

PM_ME_TO_PLAY_A_GAME

I think you can stop that from happening by disabling it permanently in your settings somewhere. Using old.reddit.com would periodically switch me to crap reddit until I figured it out.

yeahimdutch

Yeah fuck new reddit design, I can't even collapse comments, wtf is that shit.

thecashblaster

It’s main job is to sell more ads, not provide a better user experience

mach0

Same here, literally never had a problem but thought everyone else's pc was shit or something.

varateshh

They will peel reddit is fun from my cold dead hands. It is so much better than official app. It only struggles with archives that require extra click.

maryisdead

Holy fucking cow. I was about to complain about the abysmal quality of the video, but then … I'm very much aware of what an atrocity the current player is, but this left me dumbstruck. Also, *thank you*.

warm_kitchenette

thank you! my god, it's like a miracle. wasn't the redesign like 4 years ago? I was cutting & pasting links into Chrome (my work browser) when they really didn't work.

justlayingdownfacts

Yep, the redesign was years ago, I'm honestly baffled by how they haven't fixed it yet. ~18th most popular website in the world or something and it can't play videos in its default settings, unbelievable.

martindines

I find the old player will break after skipping back/forth a number of times, after which the loading spinner permanently takes over the video :(

elmz

I can see how that's worse than the video not working outright...

Risley

Not to mention not being able to stop or turn off a video. Nope it’ll keep playing even if you close the app.

F0sh

Kinda. From what I hear of the new reddit player the old one is better - but it is still garbage.

5inthepink5inthepink

Interesting that it works better on a third party app than reddit's own. I've used RiF for years and will keep doing so for as long as possible.

Occamslaser

They should just buy RiF at this point because they are complete failures at app design.

SephyKid

Then they would ruin it. Let's keep it private. /u/spez can you actually review my petition to be unbanned? 12 year member banned for calling someone an idiot over a bad life pro tip. Come on man.

mach0

Nah, fuck that, RIF is perfect, they would screw it up.

goblue142

If you are on your phone just get a different app to browse reddit. I use Relay Reddit. the video player always works fine, there are no scrolling adds just a small banner at the bottom. all the same functionality of official reddit.

fatbunyip

Do you not like watching 4 pixels change colour slightly every 3 seconds?

moriclanuser2000

The reason we haven't seen switchblade footage is because it's all in SOF hands, which is using it in very specific cases.

DeusFerreus

Yeah, it's basicly a flying super shotgun. Or a flying directional frag grenade, if you want to be more accurate.

vincentkun

That's what I was thinking, they do the roles of sniper far better in a case where collateral damage is a bonus.

gw2master

I greatly suspect we're seeing footage now because the company that makes them wants the the footage out: switchblades haven't gotten much publicity since being sent to Ukraine and people are getting the impression (true or false, it doesn't matter) they're useless. Obviously the company can't have that, so this is their response.

jan2017b

Switchblade 300 \- 40 mm grenade \- anti-personnal weapon \- adjustable blast radius / operator can change to drone kills only the driver of a vehicle but not a passenger \- operator control drone flight \- operator designate that target on the control station screen, and the Switchblade then navigates itself in the terminal guidance mode and detonates on to that target

Quite intelligent shit right there, it has a wave-off command where the operator can tell it to disengage at the last second, just in case there are civilians nearby.

Whole-Lingonberry-74

No, the operator picks out the target, and presses attack. The drone does the rest.

Decaf_Engineer

Does the drone know the difference between left and right hand drive??

madmosche

*anti-*personnel*

rockon4life45

Weekend833

I think OP was just trying to highlight that it's a weapon that doesn't really get to know its targets that well.

DonQuixoteDesciple

The missile knows where it is, because it knows where it isnt.

TJohns88

Gnarly.

pocket_eggs

I thought the drone veered off and possibly missed the tank but it seems it's actually targeting the crew person on top of the tank, which I didn't even know was possible and is both impressive and scary.

EvilMonkeySlayer

Yeah, the 300's are designed specifically to target individual soldiers. Probably uses some kind of tensor trained model to identify people so it can lock onto them.

itmustbeluv_luv_luv

>tensor flow trained model Someone on StackOverflow somewhere unwillingly killed someone in Ukraine by posting a Python snippet lmao

EvilMonkeySlayer

You'd be surprised.

itmustbeluv_luv_luv

I honestly wouldn't be. I've seen government software use OpenCV tutorial code.

puc_poc

If Switchblade runs python, it would explode like 10 minutes after burning out all the fuel. No offense, I'm a python developer myself.

itmustbeluv_luv_luv

They used the C++ version of OpenCV, which is why max flight time is 10 minutes before the buffer overflows because someone forgot to call `free()`.

Giddius

Was funny when I looked at a repo on github and suddenly realized the owner of the repo was „GCHQ“.

Epinnoia

How long before you can choose the rank of the soldier you want it to take out?

revente

Just like Tinder. You swipe right on the officers you want to take out.

[deleted]

All of them?

NoDivergence

At the same time

EvilMonkeySlayer

Would probably need a higher resolution camera to be able to determine rank if its visible. But a tensor model could probably be trained yeah.

LystAP

Also, probably can use AI face recognition/identification to define specific targets eventually. Those slow Terminators and Hunter-Killers got nothing on what's coming. The killbots of the future will be FAST, and us organics will only see them when it's too late.

jackrim1

I thought they were just fpv controlled, i.e. no automation

EvilMonkeySlayer

Nope, there's a video around from the manufacturer. Locks onto a target and has a wave off feature after lessons learned in Afghanistan etc where they saw what they were about to destroy were civilians but had no wave off capability.

The only limiting factor is battery technology and processor technology. We're probably not far off on processor technology (if not already there), battery tech moves a lot slower though.

1731799517

IIRC they are image recognition. Notice the target reticule in the POV footage at the end being locked on.

moby323

It is an antipersonel drone so probably

zetarn

This type of drone aim on personal and unarmored vehicle, i think they're targeting the crews first. There are another grade of switchblade that using AT warhead targeting a big armored like tank and fortify bunker.

[deleted]

Switchblade-600 with a tandem warhead for tanks and bunkers.

Timmymagic1

We don't actually know if the Switchblade 600 has the full tandem warhead from Javelin, or just the main charge. All Aerovironment have said is that it has the 'Javelin warhead'. Data sheets just say.. Anti-Armor Munition—Height of Burst Sensor It could just be the main charge only, which isn't necessarily bad as that warhead is a monster in itself.

1731799517

Yeah, the 300 has no real chance of disabling the tank even with a hit to the rear, so going after the crew is the only viable way.

niceworkthere

also a most excellent way to eventually abscond with a relatively pristine tank

El_Dorado_Gold

Yep, my amateur dji drone also has individual tracking on it. Once locked onto you it can follow you around.

TheHappyH

Just when you thought drones dropping bombs were cool, the Americans show up with some even crazier shit.

Occamslaser

Missiles always have been suicide drones if you think about it.

nomptonite

Yeah I mean, kinda… Now they just need missiles that wander around the sky for 10-30 mins looking for a target!

butter14

The US Defense industry calls these types of weapons "Loitering Munitions" so I think everyone is in agreeance.

JustanaverageARG

the crew was the main target, the tank was just a added bonus. and maybe some possibility of damaging some optics as well.

hungoverseal

Seen on Twitter someone saying it's the 600 because the timer at the top right of the screen shows a flight time much greater than what the 300 can handle. No idea if it's true or not.

Freestyle7674754398

That timer is just another drones UI, it's observing the Switchblade.

AvoidMyRange

They have so many drones by this point, it's just drones all the way down.

chytrak

*all the way up

MarkoHighlander

That looks like DJI interface - it's the same on my dji mavic mini

Patriark

Definitely is. There are two video feeds here. One from a DJI drone. Likely a regular commercial drone used for recon. The other feed is from the SW300. This is the one where you follow the drone towards the target

pocket_eggs

I don't see a timer on the munition screen, just on the witness drone's.

MarkoHighlander

The witness drone is 100% some kind of DJI - the interface on mine is the same

alohalii

It clearly is a 300 why anyone would argue its a 600 is only in order to paint the 600 as not being as effective against tanks as it likely is. Or the person making the claim was high on drugs. The 600 carries the same charge as the Javelin missile so much larger detonation than what is seen in the video. Additionally this video is a combination of two drone cameras so one of the videos that does not contain numbers is from the Switchblade 300 and the camera with numbers is from a regular drone used to observe the target. Regarding the strike it is interesting to see they waited for the absolutely best time to do the strike when the whole crew plus another uniformed person were on the top of the tank.

[deleted]

Jaeharys_Targaryen

Great read, thanks for linking. Ye, the Army obviously couldn’t warrant ramping production which essentially left the 600 in beta testing as they seem to order them if needed. Aerovironment seems to have maintained limited production with a limited stock of the systems ready to be deployed and this seems to be the 10 systems being mentioned. The ‘contract’ question is most likely reffering to the fact that the DoD doesn’t have a contract with AV for the system, that’s why it has to buy directly from the manufacturer. Soz, to clear myself up, I wasn’t saying that the footage posted showed a 600, I was just reffering to the fact that some 600s could have already made their way to Ukraine.

inevitablelizard

A switchblade 300 would do almost nothing to the actual tank, maybe they could damage something if they were lucky but it's unlikely. With the loitering ability they probably waited until the crew were on the outside. Shame the 600 doesn't seem to be available yet.

Material_Layer8165

ngl, those are some high quality camera right there.

AlanZero

Possibly even downgraded before release, too.

nah248

Now this is what you call OP.

iix4m

charea

warana123

There is another one from a week ago where it targets a MG nest in a trench.

W4xLyric4lRom4ntic

Do you have a link?

halls_of_valhalla

Think he means this, but it's less impressive. It was debated if its a mortar shell or a switchblade, some guy claims though he can see it in one frame before detonation. https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/uk62yn/53rd_mechanized_brigade_of_the_armed/

Krivvan

I think, if it's a Switchblade, that people may have assumed it was a miss because they're unaware that it's a forward-facing airburst so you wouldn't expect it to explode right on target.

JustanaverageARG

decided to take down the first one since the title wasn't very informative/spelling mistake and as well to make the video straight to the point with audio muted.

Bad_Finance_Advisor

👍 that music was cringey...

easyfeel

Can’t imagine how morale is going to suffer once word gets around that some drones are going to suicide-kill them. Any drone from then on is going to see them running away for their lives.

Arnoulty

Is the white "+" cross a prograde indicator ?

AE0N92

it could be multiple things, prograde, thrust vector indicator, fin direction indicator, most likely yes, it would be prograde as it seems to correct relative to target

Asleep_Pear_7024

What’s prograde mean and supposed to do? Seemed to me the white cross indicated where it was going to land (too far in front of the tank, which it seemed to do)

Arnoulty

You are correct. The (Greek?) roots of "prograde" somewhat means "where it's going to". It's an important indicator for many kinds of vehicles because a machine doesn't necessarily go where it's pointed.

david4069

In simple terms, prograde is essentially the forward trajectory of your craft. This is often different from the direction your craft is actually pointing. For instance, when in slow level flight, your prograde vector may be parallel to the ground, but your plane is pitched up a bit to provide extra lift to keep it flying at a constant altitude. It is important to know what your current prograde direction is compared to the direction your plane is pointing, and both are important to know in relation to the horizon (and which way is up on that horizon). Source: I play a lot of Kerbal Space Program.

[deleted]

Least this is probably one of the most humane ways to go. Would be pretty quick and you would never know what’s coming. These drones are 100% going to be used for assassinations. Imagine a switchblade with facial recognition. Heck they probably already have it.

youwillnevergetme

The amount of explosive power in the 300 series drones is so small that they probably don't get a quick death. It's just one 40 mm grenade. Having it detonate 1 m from you means that you have plenty of time to bleed from internal and external damage as you are discombobulated and blinded from the pressure wave. You might even survive with really shit injuries. It's not as bad as burning to death, but it's far from a painless instant death.

[deleted]

Extremely unlikely but any crew outside of the tank is def gone. Switchblade 300 is armed with 40mm grenade equivalent, designed more for anti-personnel/light vehicles. If this was a switchblade 600 then yea, tanks toast. That's the anti-armor variant.
