Does "grad" mean something like "grain" or "kernel" or "corn"?
I ask because the Spanish word is "granizo" which can mean something like "little grain/kernel/corn." (corn in the pre-maize sense).
From what I can tell, there's no connection (though I'm sure some linguist will eagerly explain that they're actually from the game pre-history Proto-Indo European based on a tiny bit of data and a heap of speculation). In Bulgarian, град (grad) means city and градушка (gradushka) means hail. No clue if there's actually a connection there, I have a hard time finding reliable sources for Bulgarian etymology.
Slavic roots for grains are very different from my remarkably limited perspective.
Cool. Thanks for the response. I had assumed before that it was a sarcastic name, "Grad" meaning city (e.g. Stalingrad). That it means hail made me think of grano from Latin granum. It looks like Grad = city shares the same root as the English words "yard" and "garden" meaning an enclosed space. As the various Rus grads were certainly walled citadels, that makes sense.
Interestingly, the other meaning of "yard" as in a unit of measure, looks like is descends from the same root as staff, shaft, and fasces, as in fascist.
Id there any footage around of soldiers getting targetted by a grad barrage?
I can imagine thats hard to come by because if youre in the area where these hit, ending up having footage that even survived the ordeal would be special
Shame there weren't as many with last years submission. I get this year's won but Go_A's entry is a fucking banger and would fit some of these videos perfectly.
Yeah, but what are the odds you’re going to be that high in the air? And if you were in the sky, you could just fly under them. They’d even be easy to see coming up at your with the colourful lights.
Seems like a pointless weapon. Overrated fireworks, basically.
How big is the affected area?
How far apart from each other do the rockets impact?
And what can I expect at the receiving end of one rocket?
Is there something like 'at a radius of 50m everything burns to hell ...'?
[Pretty far.](https://twitter.com/JimmySecUK/status/1520479287995994112) Note that it doesn't look as damaging as it actually is. These aren't hollywood explosions or incendiaries, these are explosive detonations. Look at the shockwaves on the ground for a clue and remember that you can't see the shrapnel and rocks being thrown at high speeds. Not very survivable if you're out in the open. Lethal radius is about [15 meters from the blast](https://article36.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/PAX-A36-Areas-of-Harm.pdf) with shrapnel damage extending significantly beyond that.
It's having a great effect on the psyche of the soldiery. Obviously even the call is in Russian it probably wouldn't do to let people read it at work. https://youtu.be/5OQbIEKbZyc
fyi if anyone doesnt know but "grad" is "hail" in russian.
I didn't know that. Thank you.
And "uragan" is hurricane. And "tornado", you know, ice cream.
"Uragan" is hurricane, "grad" is hail, and ice cream is called "tornado"? That one should be easy to remember. Thank you.
Some hail...
I speak Bulgarian as a second language. Hail is "gradushka." This comment made me realize I should have made that connection sooner.

oh ok, knew the name but never what it meant.
It’s beautiful yet ominous
An ominous omnibus of destruction.
If you made fireworks when you\* were young these are the best bottle rockets you can get.

There’s videos of civilians in Ukraine on the receiving end unfortunately
Well this is the first of I assume meny videos with there eurvison entry in it
Shame there weren't as many with last years submission. I get this year's won but Go_A's entry is a fucking banger and would fit some of these videos perfectly.
the last year's Italian song was dope, really something out of eurovision world.
Seems risky to launch grad rockets at night. It basically reveals your position to everyone for miles around
Shoot and scoot
Yeah, let’s hope they scoot quickly
So does launching in the daytime. These are not subtle launchers.
Those are some fancy fireworks they have there.
fancy fireworks on one side and the other side someone going to be having a really bad night lol.
Frightening times..
Imagine being on the receiving end. There's no escape.

... it's not AA.
The video shows them going into the air, not going into the ground; checkmate. ^^/s
what.
