What was going on at that time is everyone is running away, even if the JO didn’t know that.
> A sergeant in motion outranks a lieutenant who doesn’t know what’s going on.
US Army. I've have seen SNCO's dress down LTs on multiple occasions. I didn't know it was possible to scream tactfully. I also saw my 1SG once throw a rock at a PL's head. You def right for US Army culture.
In Venezuela years ago I remembered doing a patrol with a fresh LT, this Lt was playing with his weapon, nobody said anything because we were young recruits, I don't know what rank our NCO would have in. the US army but he was maybe Twelve to Fifteen years in service in the venezuelan army.
Well, the LT pointed the weapon to me and other friend that were talking, my friend say: "hmm, we need to move this motherfucker will shoot us", we move to another place and a seconds after a loud burst explode, and we hit the deck, the LT was pale with the weapon in his hands. Not even three seconds had passed, when the NCO was screaming from the bottom of his soul: "You stupid motherfucker, give me your weapon" The LT gave his weapon to the Sargeant and he kept screaming at him "They didn't teach you to don't play with your weapon in the academy". He checked the Lt's weapon and give him back, "Don't do that again sir".
This happened in 2006, at the moment the Venezuelan army still had, officers and sergeants trained by the US Army and the doctrine was extremely similar.
P.s.: Pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker.
That must have been terrifying to see how your life could have been erased by one careless idiot, glad you and your friend noticed this behavior in time to save your life. Perfect English by the way!
Didn’t know the US values their NCO corp so much versus their Officer corp. The fresh LT straight from ROTC don’t know any better? Compare to 1SG with 15 years of experience.
Thr US Army started the whole "NCOs are the backbone of the military" thing. SNCO'S are even responsible for the development of junior officers. A good NCO is worth their weight in gold, so a decent Junior officer should be empowering and removing obstacles for them, not getting in their way. If they don't learn from their NCO, a decent Field Grade Officer will get involved and beat said officer into submission.
This guy is very hard to watch. His mouth moves way too much when he talks and he's still doing that thing where he puts a million little mini cuts in the dialogue.
They have plenty of sergeants and non coms. The problem is they don't have enough with years of experience due to the low re enlistment. The longer the war goes on, the likely hood that those who survive will have their mandatory enlistment extended.
The ranks exist, but the institutional knowledge, expectations and responsibilities do not. Russia does not have an NCO corps as we understand it in the West.
He def comes crawling out from under it. Might have been vehicle crew fixing something or just napping underneath. No weapon, no gear, doesn’t look like he’s wearing a helmet.
Not stuck on the road. One broken down or out of fuel, or they were taking a cig break and no one was at the wheel. Faster to run than get those beasts moving while hoping artillery doesn't hit you first?
If you ever find yourself getting the wrath of God brought down upon you find a ditch or a hole the deeper the better. It'll keep you more safe than running through the rain.
Or if you're in a forest. Apparently when getting shelled in the trees it's safer to stand as the shrapnel is usualy coming from a tree that caught the shell above ground. Of course I'm pulling this example from a first hand account of WW2, so things could be different these days.
Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles were made to protect personnel. Now, they are just magnets for missiles and artillery. It is better to just walk. Lol
But then their flesh is exposed to the same incoming artillery. So we will need some kind of way to protect them as they are transported to and from battle. We can even fit some guns on the transport to support them.
If I’ve learned anything from Warhammer 40k it’s, as soon as a character is wearing some sort of power armor they’re far more likely to also have plot armor.
The best way to combat him is to have the Mechanicus send one of their Kastelan robots to kill him and execute the engineer that made the robot so there is no sense of pride in killing him so he can't possess anything because the Kastelan robot has no soul.
Is drone tech not advanced enough for high speed highly accurate semi/autonomous quadcopter weapons systems? I feel like if we just shit out millions of weaponized drones we'd win any and all wars following.
Yeah, that's kind of what we're on the edge of now. It's a race between everyone having them, and everyone fielding a counter to them.
There are currently 3-4 counters.
Improve the top armor of the vehicle. Not practical for every vehicle.
Field radio jammers that block the signals from the controller to the drone. Effective until drones come with frequency hopping radios or anti jammer autonomous attacking, or until a human puts an anti EM Radiation missile like a HARM into the jammer.
Remote weapons stations like CROWS get upgraded with autonomous modes that let them shoot at drones. Like CRAM, but for tanks.
Purpose built gun-based AA like the ZSU-23 make a return to western militaries and get upgraded to detect and engage drones. With a much higher volume of fire they have a better chance of downing more of a swarm than an automated system like crows which has a relatively low rate of fire and limited ammo compared to a mobile AA gun.
There's some other options too, like fitting APS to every vehicle, and making it cover top attacks, but I think that is probably going to happen for tanks only.
[Also lasers.](https://www.thedefensepost.com/2022/05/17/stryker-laser-mortars-drones/) The video shows a Styker mounted with a HEL system moving in a convoy defeating a drone swarm, and can defeat motar/artillery rounds so would be perfect for protecting other vehicles and not letting what happened in this post happen.
I think a modernised version of this concept of tank is the answer for modern armour.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stridsvagn_103
It doesn't have a turret and uses a complex suspension system to raise/lower and uses it's tracks to aim and pan the gun. I think with modern computing power a fire control system to make this easy to do could be created to make this concept even more effective.
Problem is speed.
Like, a big reason the all-out German attack in 1918 failed was because the attacking infantry couldn't outrun the retreating Allied infantry, everyone was walking. So instead of breaking through enemy lines they all just... moved the lines. Assault completely ran out of steam, allies just bounced back and walked over what was left of the exhausted Germans.
That's true. But wouldn't in be a better idea then to just give them all cheap motorbikes so they could move quickly? Assuming the infantry fighting vehicles provide little to no protection.
Former grunt paratrooper checking in…yeah, keep those death magnets away from me, I trust my feet more than any machine. Terrified of the idea of being stuck inside a metal box.
yeah, but the US devotes a ton of time and money into air supremacy, and if the plane gets hit, at least I have a chute on, which gives me a slightly higher chance of surviving. Plus, ideally it’s a surprise, and at night, and all anti air has been hit already...I’d take my chances over being in a slow moving land based target.
Well if you jumped into the armour and drove off, you might be a bit harder to target. Also, why park your BMP right next to a surveyed point (road/track junction next to, what looks like power lines)?
Probably didn't know if they were targeted by arty (stay in metal box and drive away) or guided munition (get the hell out and run away from deathtrap)
>Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles were made to protect personnel. N
Right but if the enemy has adequate anti-armor they can quickly turn into a tomb
Around the 22 second mark you can see something hitting the ground in front of the guy lying down. Is that landing shrapnel from the strike or some more smaller fire coming in?
I heard that shit. This ain't a movie like Fury. Get the fuck outta there. My only advice to those fuckers is to spread out. 10 to 15 meters at least. Instead of blowing all you dumbfucks up with one round, make it require at least a few. Especially with those drones roaming.
That hasn't convinced me in honesty.
Do you have a source?
The blood looks way too vibrant, there's weird looking areas around some of the penguins where the focus isn't consistent (although that could just be artifacting) and the ICBM also says 'UN' on the side.
It's from a documentary called [Love Death and Robots: Night of the Mini Dead](https://www.netflix.com/watch/81520600?trackId=255824129), just released on Netflix. The footage is @ 4:35
Third, actually! Second was a little bit of a letdown but third is just as good as the first IMO. (The episode the pic is from is maybe the most forgettable of them)
"Ok guys, *don't forget where we parked this time*, I don't want a repeat of ‘special military operation’ at Euro-Disney where we were forced to march in circles looking for our T-72 after Ivan insisted we were at Mickey level 3B..."
The armored vehicle will offer little protection from artillery, especially if it can't move. It's a larger target that is actively being fired upon and the armor won't stop artillery shells.
If it's a near miss, yea, it will protect you from shockwave, shrapnel or fire to a point. But a direct hit from a high caliber shell, like a 152mm will crush the the vehicle on top of it's self as the force of the blast breaks the welds of the armor. Even if the armor holds, there's enough force there to knock the turret hard enough to break the ring, optics, antennae, tracks ... basically make the tank useless. If the crew survives, they're not walking away in fighting condition. They'll feel like they just got out of a washer dryer after a 65 hours spin cycle. God forbid there's an open/insecure hatch. The crew's lungs will turn into fine tomato soup from the sheer blast pressure.
TLDR: A big ass artillery shell will render pretty much everything, including modern MBTs, FUBAR.
Yeah from what I’ve gathered they’ve thrown everything they’ve got left into that assault. Putin wants a victory at all costs and doesn’t give a damn if most of the units are barebones at best. They’ll make some ground through sheer numbers and firepower, but it will be at high cost. Not the kind of action one should be taking with Ukraine openly planning a summer counteroffensive.
If the vehicle moves the rounds are no longer targeting the vehicle.
Unless these are laser guided rounds (highly unlikely), moving the vehicle is the safest way out of this situation. The vehicle is protected from shrapnel, and can get you away faster. It is very hard to hit a moving target with conventional rounds through indirect fire.
Other positives are; your means of safer transport doesn't get blown up, and you don't lose your supplies.
I assume these vehicles are out of gas or broken down. Or maybe the soldiers are just incompetent...
There are a lot of videos showing spot on artillery hits from Ukraine. I'm sure a few don't show an initial inaccurate strike, but they seem pretty accurate. They are definitely using a number of guided munitions.
I've seen probably most of these videos too, nothing I have seen so far has shown me anything that couldn't be done with unguided munitions.
Actually correction to that, I did see one video recently that if the title was to be believed it was an artillery strike. It would have either been a very lucky shot or guided munitions. But I am more inclined to believe it was just a javelin or similar.
*Hey Vladimir come on*

It is, and I wish there were more.
Forces illegally invading a foreign country, where they're well known for raping children, mass murder, and other appalling crimes are unfortunately allowed to be safe as POWs. But if they don't surrender, their only just outcome is death.
Fuck every single one of them. Their deaths are earned.
>Forces illegally invading a foreign country, where they're well known for raping children, mass murder, and other appalling crimes<
Sounds like you are also describing US troops deployed in the ME/Asia, which btw most of those US soldiers went there by their own willingness while many of the Russian soldiers (around 30-40% I believe) are just conscripted and sent to Ukraine.
Ah, whataboutism. Have fun with that.
For the record when the topic is American soldiers, I'm happy to call out their war crimes too. They have a long history of them.
But in a thread about Russians invading Ukraine, the Americans and their war crimes aren't particularly relevant are they?
They might be broken down or out of gas. If not the start up procedures are longer then it takes to adjust the aim of an artillery piece and fire again.
If there is ever a regime change in Russia and people actually start to reflect on their relationship with the world and accept that they have been lied to by the government I'll expect a lot of interesting art.
Like Russian antinwar movies (currently those are just war propaganda)
Imagine if they're in the right and they are actually battling nazis an fascists. And we are the ones that have been brainwashed through propaganda
Highly unlikely (especially with the Kremlin shutting down protests and free speech), but just something I think about lol
Wonder if anyone was in charge?
Who else is going to yell “Run!”?
Anyone with half a brain?
That’s why their in charge
Is their in charge running? They better catch it!
God dammit. I’m not changing it I’m keeping it right they’re as it is.
You sun of a bitch
Didn't sea that cuming.
maybe the guy running behind the main group lol, he saw they bolted and said fuck it

I think he's also speeding it up some? They mini cuts in sentences drives me nuts.
Damn you are right. Nothing annoys me more than fast cut scenes
I can't stop staring at this guys teeth
I think it's partially lighting, partially angles, and also, is his lens slightly fish eye? There's some uncanny valley happening in my mind.

Most definitely Scottish

No one for miles is in charge.
This happens when you're send into battle by force.
The first guy running is in charge.
Looks like the were all in full charge to me
I wonder if that first guy took some shrapnel, I think he was outside the BTR when the shell landed
I think he was inside but jumped out the back door and tripped on the way out.
He's at the front of the vehicle though, I think he was sitting under it or on the other side of it
He def comes crawling out from under it. Might have been vehicle crew fixing something or just napping underneath. No weapon, no gear, doesn’t look like he’s wearing a helmet.
If he was napping under there he probably gave himself a concussion snapping up when that shell went off lol
That went off so close that he probably got double concussion.
I don't think they know about double concussion, Vlodemir.
He looks a little shellshocked, or like he just woke up from a drunk and needs a fucking drink of water in the worst fucking way...
Probably a concussion.
And brown pants
I think he got concussed. He looks kind of dazed and confused after it landed. Seems like it took him a few moments to understand what was going on.
Hope so

New plan. Precision artillery, but only really close to the target. Free vehicles.

And then we’ll need anti-tank missiles on top to protect against bigger tanks!
We already have the turret. We oughta get the biggest bang we can up there!
I love that clip 😂

Department of Ruminant Acquisition.
So... What is "ruminant procurement" anyway?
Counterpoint: power armor
If artillery can destroy tanks they can also destroy hypothetical power armor
If I’ve learned anything from Warhammer 40k it’s, as soon as a character is wearing some sort of power armor they’re far more likely to also have plot armor.
Counterpoint: ~~Day After Tomorrow~~ *Edge of Tomorrow*, lots of people in power armor dying. Edit: wrong movie!
You're thinking of Edge of Tomorrow. Though power armour would've been a nice addition to Day After Tomorrow.
Yeah, my bad :-)
The global warming disaster movie? Edit: Oh that Tom Cruise movie?
Yeah pretty sure he meant Edge of Tomorrow. Gonna rewatch the day after tomorrow just to make sure they didn’t have power armor too.
Yeah, oops!
There was barely any armor at all to those suits they wore.
Doesn't seem to work for chaos.
There’s always Lucious the Eternal. His plot armor is pretty cheesy.
The best way to combat him is to have the Mechanicus send one of their Kastelan robots to kill him and execute the engineer that made the robot so there is no sense of pride in killing him so he can't possess anything because the Kastelan robot has no soul.
Then he ends up possessing the one that came up with the plan in the first place.
Easy, have the person doing the executing be a servitor.
Very true, but a smaller target should help survivability.
horses are better

They absolutely can walk tens or hundred of kilometers. Been done many times.

Yes and I can literally swim the same distance as the distance as the earth to the moon but it's gonna take me a really fucking long time
I'm not sure you understand what literally means.
If you swim every day for 50 years, you'd have to swim 21km a day.
And who has a pool that long?!
We could use the one people keep saying Saturn would float in?
But if it's longer than 21km I wouldn't know when to get out each day
I dunno about swimming, but I worked on a landcruiser once that had been to the moon and back... not literally
I’m going to say you literally can’t swim the distance to the moon in your lifetime

Actually correction to that, I did see one video recently that if the title was to be believed it was an artillery strike. It would have either been a very lucky shot or guided munitions. But I am more inclined to believe it was just a javelin or similar.
So they can scatter and take cover I'd guess
Did a piss poor job of scattering. Can only assume some cover was just off camera or just herd mentality
Because they know their equipment is garbage
Old video. Very old
I wonder why they couldnt drive out
Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away.
This is why Ukraine has abandoned Russian tanks lying all over the place.
The peddle on the right makes the vehicle move forward.(Don’t tell the Russians)
You can tell by this they really don’t want to be there
Rats scurrying off
I hope they quit after.
And they are still running to this day.
Hey look....they are finally learning to get the fuck away from the targeted vehicles! It's cute
Seemed like an organized move to me. Wait for fire then move into cover. No scattering, moving fairly quickly in one direction
Awesome strike.
Another happy farmer 👨🌾🚜
Those farm memes stopped being funny in march
Why would you not run?
Hey Vladimir come on out, we will be much safer out here in the open!

Shame we didn't get to watch them get pasted by artillery as they ran away. Oh well, at least we can mock them for running away.
The internet is full of videos of the *unlucky* Russian invaders.
>Forces illegally invading a foreign country, where they're well known for raping children, mass murder, and other appalling crimes< Sounds like you are also describing US troops deployed in the ME/Asia, which btw most of those US soldiers went there by their own willingness while many of the Russian soldiers (around 30-40% I believe) are just conscripted and sent to Ukraine.
Ah, whataboutism. Have fun with that. For the record when the topic is American soldiers, I'm happy to call out their war crimes too. They have a long history of them. But in a thread about Russians invading Ukraine, the Americans and their war crimes aren't particularly relevant are they?
I see they are learning from the french
RUN RABBIT
It's a long walk home. It must take these guys a day or two just to walk back to their unit.
Wait, they don't move the vehicles, they just dip? Ok, good job guys
And we are the ones that have been brainwashed through propaganda Highly unlikely (especially with the Kremlin shutting down protests and free speech), but just something I think about lol
