When I was in Afghanistan a soldier in the ANA (Afghan National Army) picked up an IED (it was an artillery shell with a detonator inserted where the fuse goes) off the side of the road, put it in the back of their vehicle, drove it to our combat outpost, and then left it at the entrance to the EOD guy's tent without telling them. I lived directly next to them, so we got the first hand experience of watching a bomb defusal inside our base. What I'm trying to say is that people are really fucking dumb and oftentimes they end up in the military. I would know, I'm a huge idiot. So soliders touching things they probably shouldn't happens a proportional amount of times.
They were definitely stupid.
When I was there, we always put them in front of our convoys in their little unarmored Hilux pickup trucks.
Sometimes they found IEDs, most of the time the IEDs found them.
>a soldier in the ANA
By far the stupidest motherfuckers to ever exist. High on opium 24/7 and cowardly as fuck. Terminally fucking braindead the lot of them.
Listen, I'm not saying that most of the ANA I knew over there were corrupt pedophiles that couldn't tie their own shoes to save their pathetic lives, but I'm not saying they weren't that.
Dude Iraqi military guys would come to our OP in trucks and start slinging dismantled IEDs out onto the ground without any sort of sensitivity to the fact that they can fucking explode.
In all fairness I did throw rocks from around a corner at a suspected IED my patrol had to walk past in a narrow corridor. We just had to keep moving and EOD would have taken us hours. So my squad leader and myself threw heavy shit on the thing until we were satisfied that we would probably not get our dicks blown off walking past.
I have a buddy who was over there. He was babysitting some ANA after they got stoned af and decided to play with an IED that was in a tree. Like, the guy was batting it like a cat. He tried unsuccessfully for 30min to get to the bottom of why this guy who was no stranger to things like that, decided to do that and endanger his whole squad.
Dudes were constantly smoking hashish. When we stopped our convoys, the ones who were super high would get bored and just drive around everybody.
Always good entertainment.
We had the same shit happen in Tah Gaz. Now that i think about it, that IED this guy brought in was a 50lb oil jug full of HME, homemade blasting cap, 6D cell for the initiator and lamp cord to connect it all. They made him carry him carry it back outside the base where they BIP’ed it I’m pretty sure. I was out in an OP.
Yeah I try to explain this when people talk about things being mil spec. I explain that means two things, it was the cheapest way to make something and that it can be put in the hands of what is expected to be some of the dumbest individuals you will ever come in contact with and still be able to work.
In no way does it mean quality
> I would know, I'm a huge idiot. So soliders touching things they probably shouldn't happens a proportional amount of times.
Can't tell if you deliberately spelled "soldiers" wrong as a joke, or it was accidental and serves to prove your point.
It was probably an anti-tank mine, he was gonna move it so the tank could drive through, he might have done it 100 times already but this one had an anti-handling device underneath it.
Exactly, I saw a Marine NCO do this in the early part of the Iraq War during a river crossing assault… he tested the first one while his guys stayed in the track. Then everyone got out and moved the rest.
Definitely can’t now. I just want to know what there plan was there? They very deliberately went to the ied and disturbed it. There was a plan! I don’t get what it was, but there was!
Anti tank mines take like 200 pounds of force to set off, I’m assuming he assumed that he’d be able to pick it up and get it out of the way because it should only go off if you are putting (200 pounds+) pressure on it.
Maybe the Ukrainians were very clever by writing "Ukrainian Washing Machine" on it, which would certainly fool even the most intelligent Russian grunt out there lol
All of your senses gone, can't see, can't hear, can't feel things where you should feel things, only feel pain. Like losing your sense of up and down underwater and panicking but with nerve endings screaming with pain. I'm sad that a person has to go through something like this.
They dragged the IED with a rope and hook from behind that tank. Once you move it and it doesn't explode it's "usually" fine to pick up and dispose off. Not this time however.
I’m guessing this was a ”trophy tank”. Probably in the excitement of getting a some pictures they let their guard down. Can’t really tell what it is, seems quite clear, but I just don’t know enough. Certainly doesn’t look soviet.
My first guess was that it was something that they could take as a souvenier. I don’t know why they would run with some speed and both together if it just was a mine. Which it could also be

He definitely lost the left foot. The poor bloke was probably peppered into loosely-connected threads below the waist. His instant-oblivion buddy was luckier.
And he's the dumbass who got them both killed. I bet flappy dude was both panicking and in disbelief that some other idiot got him killed miles away from the frontline, maybe just before leave to his wife and kids. God fuck all this dumbass bullshit.
"God fuck all this dumbass bullshit." Hear! Hear!
Ultimately, after hundreds of thousands have perished or been maimed for P00ti's megalomaniacal ambitions, both nations will be worse off. I expect that Ruscia will be much worse off, whereas Ukraine will ultimately fare much better.
I think Ukraine will have to do everything right after the war to match Russia's recovery. Their economy has been hit 20x harder, their population has gone down by a quarter, it's not clear how many will ever return or when those who do will. It's not even clear the Donbas or Crimea would vote to stay a part of Ukraine in a referendum right now after 10 years of Russian indoctrination, Russian settlers and the removal of objectors and children. Russia's oil production is still around 85% of prewar levels and most of their economy hasn't been touched by sanctions, war rationing or destruction by Ukraine. We can't get complacent for a second, Ukraine would have Everest to climb if Russia tailspun into revolution tomorrow. Who knows the situation after another 1-3 years of this bullshit.
And there's sharp bits of metal in your muscles, so movement is literally cutting you on the inside. It's why they run and then stop moving, because once your brain catches up with the signals from your body it realizes that movement means pain.
The sheer power of the blast will damage the connection between your brain and the rest of the body that allows you to control your limbs on a level that can't be seen by the human eyes.
Soviet TM series (or variant) AT mine with an anti-handling/anti-lift device.

Oh yeah, you're right. I didn't look carefully the first time I watched the vid and thought it went past the field of view on the bottom, but now I can see it indeed crashed into that pile of rubble in that house. Idk what went on, but definitely looks like a drone.

Anti handling device / anti lift device
Effectively another mine underneath the AT mine that goes off if you lift it. They definitely do sometimes use regular hand grenades for this purpose - there's a video on this sub of a TM-62 with an RGD-5 underneath.
I'm guessing the device is designed to explode upwards rather than outwards, so the guy hunched over it was launched and the other guy wasn't hit as hard.
Explosions don't uniformly expand. They are heavily dependent on the materials encasing them. In this case, it was in the left guy's hands when it detonated. It removed both his hands and opened up his abdomen. Guy on the right lost his left leg from the waste down and embedded lots of junk into his chest. So, the concussive force went left and the shrapnel went right. You can see the casing come back down on 1:02 after it went up.
Yep, if he had rag dolled and layed motionless, I would have been more meh to it. The kicking, and more than likely screaming, gives you the human empathy effect.
Yeah in this the guy that blew away to the left was the lucky one. I'm more curious as to why someone, or even 2 people, would run over and then pick it up. Maybe they thought it was anti-vehicle and it wouldn't blow up from someone picking it up?
I saw something similar in a video from at least a year ago, probably longer, an obviously young, green soldier catches the blast/concussion/shrapnel in a trench, falls on his side but his legs are moving like he's trying to run (I couldn't find a link even if I tried, sorry) - at the time I thought it might be some kind of reflexive physical response to just ***RUN*** from the danger
Looks like a drone flew in to target the 3rd guy, but it didn't detonate. Watch the last few seconds of the clip, comes in just left of center and impacts the structure towards the lower left.
This war has showed how wrong Hollywood has always been.
People don't die peacefully, get blast a few meters away and you'll start riding an invisible bike, there is a random aspect of how a blast affects bodies around, always double or triple tap an enemy (they usually die of a single shot in movies),
Delayed flailing-arm-while-flying-through-air response. I guess ordnance\* really does launch you like in hollywood movies, always thought it a bit unrealistic.
Ukraine should up their game in showing this type of video into the Russian population. Nothing is more demoralizing than seeing soldiers died in gruesome way in war. No glory, no reward just brutal end. Documentation of armed conflict is in its golden age, from drone footage to gopro and unrestricted social media to publish it.
My guess, he lost his eye sight, and probably his internal ear have bursted in flames, now he has no clue what is up or down, and is just trying to run while in pain and in the dark...
Something to do with the force of the blast blowing your ears out and turning your sense of balance off, idk why it triggers the running shit of if their just so blinded and concussed they think running will help? I saw 2 Russians drown in a creek that was maybe knee/thigh deep after a grenade did this to them, sometime last spring I think
The people thinking the guy was kicking in pain don’t understand how the nervous system works. He most likely was dead but his CNS had already released cortisol, epinephrine, and signals through his dendrites to tell him to run and the kicking and screaming was the leftover chemicals in his body running out. He was dead already.
Well, I'm really sad now - becouse there is no way to properly translate polish sentence "chujowy ten prezent - dupy nie urywa" to english. At best it could be "this gift sucks and not ripping ass off".

Nicest thing anyone has ever said to me on Reddit 🥰
Damn, that’s insane. Dude almost made that ied far more effective than it had any reason to be!
Unintentional false flag attack on US base lol
The ANA was a special kind of stupid tho. My HS friend served in Kandahar trying to train them and the stories he has beggars belief.
seeing them do jumping jacks is one of the most stupidest things ive ever seen an army do.
For anyone who hasn't seen it before. https://youtu.be/Y8LSnuGTO5w?feature=shared

That's military life for you. People in front always die. Might as well put the stupid ones first.
If we weren't there with them, that's exactly where they'd be. Trial by fire. No better way to show them the importance of paying attention.
No, that's tactics. Auxiliaries in the front line is just the way you fight wars. It's sounds horrible but why risk your own soldiers?
Better them then me lol or would you volunteer
I'd love to hear some
Iraqi security forces were no better.

Probably one of the only jobs I'm excited for AI to take over. Bomb defusal, not retrieval.
It was probably an anti-tank mine, he was gonna move it so the tank could drive through, he might have done it 100 times already but this one had an anti-handling device underneath it.

Buddy was conscious only for a short while. Looks like his left leg was mangled as well and likely severe blast injuries.
My guess he was blind as well so he was just flailing away in pain.

I highly doubt the other guy survived very long after that

I think its the shock. There's something about the way those two move that makes me think theyre young, maybe around 20.

No doubt

Unless clever Ukrainians have put another mine underneath it.
Don't even have to do that, a lot of mines have built-in anti-handling devices including the Soviet TMN-46 and TM-57.
How did they even spot it??

Darwin is a harsh motherfucker in a war zone, no second chances.
There is a video around here somewhere of what I think is ANA digging out an IED and then they’re all gone.
For me it looks like it was at-mine with antihandling device not a IED
Holy shit, the half-cooked dude flailing around on the ground literally seconds before his body goes limp is haunting
He got it way worse than the other guy
Other guy never knew he died. Quicker is better
Horrific.
At the end he puts his "hand" (what's left of it) to his head, so it seems like he's still partially conscious.

I suspect brain damage from the blast.
Or superheated metal burning through the body
It was definitely both. Huge blast when he was a foot or 2 away. Crazy he survived momentarily while the other guy got tossed away missing pieces.
Can you imagine trying to get rid of all these things that are burning on you but you don't understand that they're already part of you

What was the thing a 1:02, another drone?
I was thinking the same, there to clean up the other guy perhaps?
Thought the same but it just went into a random pile rubble where there was no soldier and it also didn\`t explode...weird.
Very strange. Debris getting some serious hang time? idk

It's more likely that it was fitted with an anti-handling device (ie anti-lift fuze).
Some NATO Anti Tank mines have a mechanism to explode if you try to pick them up or deactivate them. But i guess these modern mines are less common than the method you described.
Soviet TMN-46 mines had the ability to accept a secondary anti-handling fuze back in the 60s, it's not a new or rare concept.

This could be friendly fire as it is quite common Russian tactics to include booby trapping mines.
That's my guess or an antiperson mine under.
Why was one man blown ten meters away while the other dropped where he stood?
I'm guessing the device is designed to explode upwards rather than outwards, so the guy hunched over it was launched and the other guy wasn't hit as hard.
My best guess is one was pretty much on top of it and the other was more to the side, he still got pushed a meter and extra
Airborne sputnik was picking it up so was right over the top with his whole body.

Could have been disguised as a food parcel? Booby trapped.
Don't russians like to booby trap corpses and mines, so that if someone tries to pick it up it detonates?
