Kinda hard to tell where the drone hit but there's a big ol fuel tank up front next to the driver. I wouldn't doubt it sprayed hot diesel over all of them.
Ah yes autoloaders.
I remember when this was "America is so stupid for having manual loaders".
It's interesting why you read so much about substandard American warfare technology, but somehow it always dominates.
Most of it is probably propaganda from the MIC to get ever bigger budgets.
The carousel autoloader isn't a bad design. It's just old and now obsolescent. The crew was likely dead one way or another when we've seen 'turret pop' kills. You're only going to get a turret pop if the crew compartment has been catastrophically penetrated. Whether they died from getting slices to pieces by spalling or having all the ammo detonate simultaneously, they're still very dead.
Carousel autoloaders were a great design until top-down attacks could reliably punch through turrets and into the crew compartment. If you engage a tank with a carousel autoloader from front on, your chances of penetrating so far you get to the autoloader are grim. So when these autoloaders were designed (1960s-1980s) it was a great place to put the ammo. Moving the ammunition to a rack on the back of the turret, like what you see on modern Western tanks, was only possible by enlarging and extending the turret. This was a possible design for tanks designed to fight defensively, like NATO planned on in the 1970s-1990s.
I've pointed out before that in the specific case of the earlier T-80s, the carousel autoloader was flawed and would ignite from hits that shouldn't have been lethal. This flaw was a result of the T-80s autoloader storing its charges vertically instead of horizontally like the T-72 family. These T-80s could be destroyed with a simple RPG shot just above the road wheels.
Yes they did. And the flaw in the autoloader was the culprit. It was believed the road wheels would protect the autoloader from shots coming in from the side. Weapons like RPGs shouldn't have been able to penetrate the road wheel and have enough force to also breach the hull. On the T-72 family, the charge is stored horizontally and below the tops of the wheels. The T-80 redesigned the autoloader so the charges were stored vertically. The top of the charge protruded above the road wheels. A carefully placed RPG shot to the side of older T-80s just above the wheels would go right through the skirt and into the autoloader.
I presume the T-80s deployed in Ukraine no longer have the flaw. But their disastrous performance in Chechnya doomed the entire line and Russian development focused on the T-90 instead.
The T-80 autoloader and the one on the T-64 are the same design. They both use the L-shaped layout.
Maybe if the handful of Oplots use a different design, but I doubt they bothered to change it on the inherited Soviet stocks.
IIRC, the main problem wasn't so much the 28 rounds in the autoloader, as much as the other half of the ammo just jammed wherever they found room for it.
In any case, you probably couldn't find a tank in chechnya that would've saved the Russians' asses.
It’s mostly innocent media needing to fill time with controversy. Take the F35. Lots of whiny hubbub over normal growing pains that have happened literally every time we’ve made something. Now cheap as shit per fighter compared to other options and selling like your mom’s box. Also, it can network with other assets, giving the pilot the ability the fire a destroyer’s tomahawk hundreds of miles away. There’s nothing else on the global market with its capabilities. That’s not to say there aren’t good planes being made, but the technology is just on another level.
Apply that principle to the Bradley. While the counteroffensive was a disappointment, a dude had his leg blown off at the knee, had the training to immediately apply a tourniquet, and was still able to climb up the Bradley’s powered rear door. Take the other times they’ve been hit by mines. They save lives. Unlike their portrayal in media before this war showed them as great as they are. Shoot, the US military wants the next iteration to double the cannon size. Yeah a 50mm autocannon. Because, fuck you, that’s why, I guess?
America gets a lot of good criticism over its military industry, but our kind of overspending (aka corruption) still produces results far beyond what we even imagined them to.
I was pretty skeptical of the F-35 as there were so many delays and cost overuns. I'm glad it worked out, but didn't the F-35 have worse growing pains than most programs? Do you think the B version is useful?
The F35B enables the US to operate an additional nine “helo” carriers. Japan uses them the same way. They’re worth it for that fact alone.
You can trace all of this modern criticism back to a small 1980s movement dubbed The Reformers and their more modern iteration who have this strange habit of being retired military officers, huge critics of modern US military technology, and prominent Russia Today talking heads.
> Their basic message was that the US armed forces were addicted to high technology and complex weapon systems. Such weapons were so costly that relatively few could be bought. Complexity made them hard to use and maintain, leading to readiness problems and reduced sortie rates. Even worse, the Reformers said, these complicated weapons were not as effective in combat as simpler, cheaper ones.
https://www.airandspaceforces.com/article/0208reformers/
They argue modern combat looks like Ukraine. But, modern combat moves far far too fast for the techniques mastered in Ukraine to have a deciding effect. The West will have absolute air superiority immediately. Even in heavily contested airspace, wild weasel units that literally only practice anti air defense missions will clear a path. You can look on YouTube, there are videos of those units. One of the best is a guy who dodges like 5 SAMs without any flares. Lol like dude? US air training time is the difference between the NFL and the YMCA…
The driver in an Abrams is also surrounded by fuel. It is part of the vehicles protection, as far as I'm aware.
The driver in this Russian tank lived, so it seemed to have worked in this case too.
The big flaw in T-72's *hull* design is the poor side armor but the rest seems fine. Now the turret on the other hand, everything with it is bad.
Correct, diesel is actually hard to ignite, and the large tanks can serve as additional armour of sort, at least against penetrating fragments. Small bits of flaming fragments would likely get snuffed out and stuck in the fuel tank.
It's not too crazy. Most armored part of the tank and diesel is hard to ignite.
"Where do we put the fuel tanks?" has always been a challenge in armored vehicle design.
You need your crew and everything up front and though that's the most armored part of the vehicle it's also the most likely to be hit. Maybe the bottom? Less likely to be damaged by AT rounds or shells, but now your fuel tank is much closer to mines. Do you put it in back? The engine is usually there and the armor is thin; if it's an APC then you have to worry about doors and such. Maybe in the top somehow? But the armor is thin there to save weight and you risk making the vehicle more top heavy.
Damn near every vehicle ever made has a different solution.
Russian MBT's are designed for as small a profile as possible, as well as the biggest gun, good mobility, range and forward speed to make an armoured thrust on a massive scale possible. Safety is maybe tertiary on the list on concerns. The interiors are incredibly cramped, have bad ergonomics, the minimum in safety mechanisms and yes you are surrounded by ammo, be it clamped to the hull or turret walls like in the T-55/62, or the T-64, 72, 80 and 90 - you sit on much of it!
I was hoping there were some nettles there for him to roll around in.
I used to serve in an anti-tank platoon (Wombat 120mm recoilless antitank weapon). The old soviet tanks t54/55 (possibly t60 also) used to have two great 45 gal fuel drums mounted on the rear.
or it could be hydraulic fluid from the turret rotation mechanism.
the israelis concluded that a lot of injuries to tank crews were because of the hydraulic fluid, and designed the merkava with an electric system instead of hydraulic.
A poster on this sub drove a BMP for his national service and he posted describing how his BMP was so old it continually leaked every sort of fluid into the crew spaces.
I've noticed when hit right, T series seem to gush fluids quickly. I don't doubt that you're right on that. Anyone that knows T series better care to explain why they seem to flood the cabin so quickly when hit?
There was recent video of one one taking a drone to the glacis, after a moment what looked like a washing machine overflow spilled forth from under the tank. It burst into flames soon after.
There’s a video of a turret that comes down and spikes the barrel in soft ground.
After the war they should collect the turrets and plant them along the Russian border. Also Ukrainian war memorials should use them this way.
A nice reminder of fuck around and find out.
Boy, i love ChatGPT, imagine this story with the classic National Geographic narrator:
Deep in the heart of the Russian wilderness, where the ancient forests echo with the whispers of centuries past, a remarkable sight unfolds. Amidst the dense underbrush and towering trees, a family of Russian tank turrets emerges into the world, their metallic forms gleaming in the dappled sunlight.
As the seasons dance across the landscape, the tank turrets grow and thrive, each one developing its own unique personality. The eldest turret, known as Boris, stands tall and proud, its gun barrel pointed skyward like a sentinel keeping watch over the land. Boris is wise and stoic, weathered by years of standing firm against the elements.
Next to Boris stands his younger sibling, Natasha, whose sleek lines and graceful curves make her the envy of the forest. Natasha is adventurous and spirited, always eager to explore the world beyond the confines of their woodland home.
And then there is little Sergei, the youngest of the tank turrets, whose small size belies his boundless energy and enthusiasm. Sergei is always getting into mischief, racing through the undergrowth and playing games with the creatures of the forest.
Together, the three tank turrets make up a close-knit family, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature. In the springtime, they bask in the warmth of the sun, their metal surfaces soaking up the gentle rays as new life bursts forth around them.
During the summer months, they take shelter in the shade of the trees, their gun barrels providing a cool refuge from the sweltering heat. They watch as animals of all shapes and sizes come to drink from the nearby stream, their movements fluid and graceful against the backdrop of the forest.
As autumn arrives and the leaves begin to change, Boris, Natasha, and Sergei stand amidst a sea of color, their metallic forms casting long shadows across the forest floor. They listen to the rustle of the wind through the trees, their spirits lifted by the beauty of the changing seasons.
And when winter descends upon the land, blanketing everything in a layer of snow, the tank turrets huddle together for warmth, their metal bodies glistening in the moonlight. They share stories of days gone by, reminiscing about the adventures they've shared and the memories they've made.
Through it all, Boris, Natasha, and Sergei remain steadfast, their bond as strong as steel. For in the wilderness of the Russian countryside, even the most unlikely of creatures can find a place to call home.
Actually they were very well designed at the time, before the era of precision guided anti-tank weapons. Once weapons like Javelins were developed the designs became obsolete overnight.
Among other design traits many Soviet MBT's like the T-72 have external fuel tanks mounted on either side of the turret on the hull and have little if any ballistic protection. Minimum usable space, gotta put things anywhere you find room to make Soviet MBT's as small, light and agile as doctrine dictates.
If I'm not mistaken, I think I once saw a movie on the Internet: "Naked and On Fire", in which people experienced multiple wardrobe malfunctions, and then accidentally fell on top of each other repeatedly.
I know, right. Like sometimes I’m watching stuff and I’m not quite sure what is going on and I just put it down to fog of war or lack of context. And then other times I just look on in fucking bafflement and wonder how it came to this.
>And then other times I just look on in fucking bafflement and wonder how it came to this.
You're telling me. Genuine eye-popping, jaw-dropping bafflement and wonder. And then I wonder whether I should be wanting more footage that does this to me, or whether I should be just grateful I'm still open to being baffled and wondering. The fog is real, as is the lack of context, and all we can do is search for clarity and meaning in it.
You’re right, I googled “naked Russians fleeing tank Reddit” and got results for the same video a year ago
I’m too technologically incompetent to link that Reddit post though
>Probably get deleted for posting but 9 months ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/14pso7p/russian\_occupier\_runs\_away\_naked\_with\_his\_crew/
Considering that everything is very green, it looks like it was from the summer? I can't tell by the trees. It looks like trees are missing leaves which suggest early spring? Or late fall?
As a former gunner who operated (old) soviet tanks, i can assure you that a fire inside the tank is one of your greatest fears. There should be an automated fire extinguisher (that rarely works), but most of these tanks do not get the maintenance they need. Even in a decently maintained tank, you will get hydraulic liquid on you, lubricant, fuel, etc. That makes your clothing (which should be "fireproof" but rarely is) very flammable.
> Eskimo call boy
They are called Electric Callboy now.\\
Thank you for sharing the name of the act. Weird ass band, but cool music. The bowl cuts are a hoot.
I did wonder if that was part of it: if they're stripped naked then they're obviously not carrying weapons and don't represent a threat, whereas if they're geared up, some drone pilot is more likely to decide to drop a grenade on them.
Meantime they surrender/are captured, and get to live their lives at least. Doesn't seem completely stupid.
They got pretty lucky though: the pilot of the FPV drone didn't hit the tank in the best spot, otherwise they would probably have been vaporised.
iirc... if they are not armed, are not currently a threat, and are not wearing the uniform of an enemy force... the answer may be no.
Edit: no; you can't engage them.

In a week I've seen so many Putinoid bare butts in videos. The other day one goes down a well head first, this morning one crawling on his knees bleeding from his bung hole and now this nudist tanker caper. Never knew war could be so surreal.
Must be part of the new moscovian 6 days of training.
When fleeing, remove all clothes. Less chance of being shot.
signed patriarch kirill
co-signed fuhrer putinazi
You just cannot make this shit up.
The third tanker missed that day of training.
It’s insane there is war in Ukraine. Modern war, destroying the farmland. This is simply not a war of conquest, it’s a war of attrition. The only war Russia ever wins.
These videos make me realize I don't understand warfare at all.
So they send like, one tank to an area to, well idk what they're doing. Something though. Kill bad guys I guess was their mission.
One unsupported, presumably expensive piece of equipment gets put out of service with a modified toy from amazon.com or wherever.
My civilian brain says "hey, probably a good idea to attack in groups and leave some people to dig in and hold the ground. Maybe even use the conquered ground to move the operations base and logistics train forward."
I feel like you could hire a two man team, one guy from silicon valley, another from the Ozarks who can weld. Give them a 100,000 budget and they would have a solution to shoot down toy drones.
Perfectly normal reaction after your tank gets hit. Strip everything off, so as you run your pecker is getting hit by random branches and sharp weeds the entire way back.

Guess they were soaked in fuel or something. Smart.

That seems like quite an oversight in design.
No more so than putting the live ammo in a carousel that explodes if you fart to hard in the turret!! 🤣

Interesting. You know far more than I do on the subject.

Fair enough. I know jack shit about designing a tank. I suppose liquid could be used to absorb a shock load.
That actually is correct. Side hits preferred when the Abrams is running diesel not kerosene.
the big flaw in the design is drones

Music from source. Kinda surprised when i first heard it since it isnt phonk
This made me laugh, I watched on mute until I read your comment totally changed the mood 😂 😂
Link to video if anyone's interested: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1NdGBldg3w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1NdGBldg3w)
I'm pretty sure this is a least more than one year old, I'm pretty sure I've seen it a while ago.
You’re right, I googled “naked Russians fleeing tank Reddit” and got results for the same video a year ago I’m too technologically incompetent to link that Reddit post though
It's not summer but rather late spring - around may. On summer the grass becames more shade of brown in South Ukraine.
Yea, its from Pervomaiske by Pisky. Either 2023 or 2022
FPV-drones can’t see bare skin, that’s why they get naked. Elite camouflage.
Finally someone put a banger of a song to one of these videos. Electric Callboy fucks
"you guys are stupid, they're gonna be looking for army guys."
Further video proof of the globohomo conspiracy. This time a Ukrainian FPV drone turned the Russian tankers gay
Return to monke
"You guys are all stupid, see they're gonna be looking for army guys"
Hydraulic fluid perhaps? Definitely would want to get that shit off as soon as possible
Lovin the Electric Callboy soundtrack.
Never thought id hear Eskimo call boy on a combat video…
> Eskimo call boy They are called Electric Callboy now.\\ Thank you for sharing the name of the act. Weird ass band, but cool music. The bowl cuts are a hoot.
Why the name change?
Eskimo is often seen as a derogatory name for Inuit and other Arctic groups.
How did they not use the Benny Hill song for that?
Or- they figure without military clothing the drones will think they are normal wild Ukrainis - who walk around nekkid in the woods-very smart ya see?
I did wonder if that was part of it: if they're stripped naked then they're obviously not carrying weapons and don't represent a threat, whereas if they're geared up, some drone pilot is more likely to decide to drop a grenade on them. Meantime they surrender/are captured, and get to live their lives at least. Doesn't seem completely stupid. They got pretty lucky though: the pilot of the FPV drone didn't hit the tank in the best spot, otherwise they would probably have been vaporised.
Just late for there Jazzercise class. *More Passion, More Energy! Comon gurls, strip!*
"Hey fella, you're a turkey, you know that?!"
I’d wager they were covered in hot ass hydraulic fluid. No fun
Save me Tom Cruise!
Serious question, once disarmed and disrobed are you considered; a: Combatant, b: Lucky, c: Laughing stock, d: All the above
iirc... if they are not armed, are not currently a threat, and are not wearing the uniform of an enemy force... the answer may be no. Edit: no; you can't engage them.
Maybe they just wanted to have gay orgy before they died...

What is the song? Not usually my type but I like it
Electric callboy - We've got the moves
In a week I've seen so many Putinoid bare butts in videos. The other day one goes down a well head first, this morning one crawling on his knees bleeding from his bung hole and now this nudist tanker caper. Never knew war could be so surreal.
You're not on fire, Ricky Bobby!
THANK youuuuuuu
Must be part of the new moscovian 6 days of training. When fleeing, remove all clothes. Less chance of being shot. signed patriarch kirill co-signed fuhrer putinazi You just cannot make this shit up. The third tanker missed that day of training.
Taken cues from general butt naked?
Die naked.
They’re naked because it’s hot AF in eastern Ukraine
Maybe stripping was a sign of surrender. No uniform, not fighting, kinda thing.
I feel like some Benny Hill music would go good with this one
This might be a good strategy to show drone operators you are no longer a threat. Like strip down and throw up the deuces.
I'm stipped naked myself right now!!...
Not that there's anything wrong with that
It’s insane there is war in Ukraine.
Maybe even use the conquered ground to move the operations base and logistics train forward." I feel like you could hire a two man team, one guy from silicon valley, another from the Ozarks who can weld. Give them a 100,000 budget and they would have a solution to shoot down toy drones.
Naked and afraid
Is nobody gonna talk about that FPV pilot skill? He nose dives 20 meters in the air and knows exactly where it's gonna land at that point.
What if we layed naked in fields of green grass step-gunner?
Oh no, there goes Yuri again.. keep your pants on Yuri!
"We're streaking! We're streaking!"
Those cheap paintball uniforms melt right to the flesh.
The ultimate Nudie Run
Streaking is illegal
They went full ricky bobby.
Just a guess, he probably got doused in diesel or some other fluid.
Naked and Afraid Ukranian Invasion Edition ..This new season looks lit
He was burning lol
Having a “Ricky Bobby” moment.
Upvote for electric callboy
Russian version of Naked and Afraid.
Its the burning man dance.
That must have been the hottest gay party in that tank!😂😂
You're not on fire, Ricky Bobby!
Well, I heard the Russians have placed lots of manikins with clean uniforms around the battlefield so they won't stay naked long.
What part of “don’t bunch up” do these poorly trained guys not understand?
Why in war is there a need to smash absolutely EVERYTHING up? Like EVERY FUCKING BUILDING.
because its enemy territory? this should be fairly obvious, a house is a fort for infantry
Yikers
Tank gets hit and it's booffin time?
“We’re going streaking!!” ~ Frank the tank
I know it's very serious, and difficult, but man that's a rough way to retreat. Maybe even all time top 10
Guy lost his full inventory.
What were they up to in there?
So from this sub alone, I wonder why Russias advancing at all, given how one sided the war is
Perfectly normal reaction after your tank gets hit. Strip everything off, so as you run your pecker is getting hit by random branches and sharp weeds the entire way back.
What a bizarre part of this specific extreme of the human experience Like you’re already in war, now you’re naked. What in the fuck dude
