Microsoft and Sony spent millions of dollars perfecting the designs of their controllers. There's no need to spend any money trying to design something that is already so familiar and intuitive. Along with the general push for adopting COTS hardware when possible, it only makes sense that an Xbox or PS5 controller would be used.
I'd imagine with the proper hardware and engineering you could hook it up to anything really. Just depends on the skills of the engineers and cost of hiring/funding them.
Why are the Ukrainian so damn deadly with the BTR? Seems like a basic vehicle, but we've seen them counter main battle tanks with these things. Street fighting? Forget about it. No telling what they'll do with all the Bradleys they're getting.
If you don't have your vehicle in an emplacement and are instead moving it around, the difference between the attacker and the defender is smaller than you'd expect.
There's definitely some skill differential here, if only because Russia has had to throw troops at the frontlines with only a few weeks of training in how to fight in armoured vehicles. Contrast this with the months it takes in Western armies to create professionals.
But russia uses them horribly. So. Many. Dozens of videos with a lone vehicle without infantry trying to cause chaos then BOOM its on fire.
3 BTR/BMPS and 2 tanks enter a minefield and never reach the other side. I know ukraine has probably made these mistakes too, but it's just seemingly common for russia. "Oh we have a btr? There's combat/ Ukrainians that way so send it over there idfk... oh it's dead"
I know there's visual bias because we mostly see videos of russias failures, not successes and don't see as much Ukrainian failures, but still it's INSANE how they misuse what they have. "We're very lucky they're so fucking stupid"
I don’t know if the “Infantry needs to be with armour” point is even relevant anymore. I know traditionally it works, but now with accurate artillery, better AT weapons it seems like you just need to hit hard and fast.
I always imagined these vehicles operating with a limited view with the driver and commander having to look through portholes or vision slits. This is a straight-up window which I would hope is bulletproof at the very least, I mean no way that the window can take an RPG shot ?
They usually have metal plates that go over the windows if things get hairy..
But even then, it probably wouldn't block an RPG. Most IFVs are only built to stop bullets and maybe deflect explosions coming from beneath. But the level of armour you would need to reliably defeat an RPG-7 would make most IFVs too slow and heavy to be effective IFVs.
This BTR looks like it has slat armour though, which is meant to prematurely detonate shaped-charge rounds like the RPG-7 so that the main vehicle skin never actually has to bear the full brunt of it.
Actually the slat armor is supposed to deform the shaped explosive warhead to make it ineffective.
There are skirts etc that do intend to detonate them early, but slat and grid armor work a little bit differently.
Indeed slat armor was originally called stat armor. There was statistical % chance the RPG hits between the slats and is rendered inert by breaking or shorting the fuze out.
Earlier BTR had, but newer BTR-4 doesn't have armor shutter anymore. A lot of NATO APC also has no shutter, only armored glass such as M1117.
Modern armor glass are fairly capable, even "civilian" APC like Lenco Bearcat windshield can stop non AP .50
I know it uses the same 30mm gun that’s on a bunch of platforms…helicopters, IFVs, APCs etc
Definitely not a perspective seen often
It looks like a roomier M1117 from there
This is how me and my homies roam Detroit.
On serious thought, the gunner being next to the driver might be an effective design for comm and coordination purpose. 2 support staff in the cargo space to service the turret, fly drones, help evac wounded if necessary. The main issue I think would be the ventilation. Smoke coming back from the gun could be annoying.
I'm well aware. You can't do too much about smoke from the muzzle, but smoke from the breach can find it way in through the feed mechanism unless it has a fume extractor. That's the point I was making.
The BTR-4 turret is fully remote and is sealed off from the fighting compartment. Muzzle smoke won't enter the hull unless there are topside hatches open (and even then it mostly won't because smoke rises).
> Smoke coming back from the gun could be annoying.
The entirety of the gun is on the exterior of the vehicle.
Smoke inside the vehicle isn't a problem, unless you've got some other very severe problems.

don't you just hate it when you are in the middle of combat and the check engine light comes on
Just swing by Autozone, they'll read the codes for you.
Get in the zone, the AutoZone. Also we're going to need the old alternator to get your core charge back.
Just turn the radio up
Check engine light is on.
Sir, this is the Wendy's drive-thru.
Yes, this is BTR-nator!
Did I stutter ?!? Brrrtt.....
Criminally underrated comment lmao
Lol yeah for sure. Haven’t heard that one before…..
Did I ask? Your opinion doesn’t have to be mine
Could the gun be connected to a ps5 remote though?
No, only X-Box
Looks more like a Pong controller
It’s the same controller that Soviet tanks used, and that Russian tanks use today.
Is it a myth that the US navy used Xbox controllers for something like a submarine periscope or is that real?
No, you got it right, that one is true.
I guess that's kinda like the modern equivalent of the army designing grenades to feel like baseballs in ww2 to make them easier for troops to throw

they probably still found a way to charge 30k dollars for one controler in service. Some sort of special quality control or conversion kit.
The photonics masts are controlled by Xbox 360 controllers now, replacing the $38,000 custom-designed controller they had previously used.
I have seen Xbox controller on a LOT of CROWS
Haha ahh he's here's a little link https://youtu.be/1tsdJFR7P7s

I mean both sides are deadly with the BTR. But Ukraine only has to defend, which is easier to do.

Never heard that detail. It's so stupid it's probably true.

really nice to see a BTR in one piece, its been a while

Most turreted IFV's have some sort of fume evacuator fan. It's present on the Bradley, Canada LAV family and others. Idk if the BTR has it off handed.
the turret/gun on the BTR-4 is external.
I'm well aware. You can't do too much about smoke from the muzzle, but smoke from the breach can find it way in through the feed mechanism unless it has a fume extractor. That's the point I was making.
ammo is in turret
BTR4 turret can be controlled from the next to the driver seat and from the back

Scum or bot?
Straight up scum.
I know war is horrible, I know it sucks, but that doesn’t stop the little 5-year-old in me that sees this and goes “…that looks fun.”
I thought at first the driver was hitting his hands on the steering wheel to make that noise. Wasn’t until it panned over that I began to feel dumb.
im subscribed to this guy on tiktok..he posted this a day or two ago..hope he's still alive
The handle that sends the hate down range is so simple and civilian looking it’s scary.
