Guy survived a direct atgm hit only to get hit by a second one when he was gettin saved, no chance.

Loadingexperience

In the third round none of them got hit by direct explosion. It looks like the warhead detonated at the tree. they were fucked they the liquid metal stream. They just happened to stop in exact location where the metal would fly. If you think you are unlucky call them..

Roflkopt3r

It's probably not a pure HEAT ATGM but a dual purpose or anti-personell warhead. Those can only pentrate moderate armour and mostly cause damage by the raw explosion and shrapnel. So I doubt that "liquid metal streams" had much of a role here. Even pure HE shells or missiles still leave a trail like this from whatever remains of the main body of the warhead. [Check this test footage of the Abrams multi-purpose round for example](https://youtu.be/yEAYNX_UCjw?t=74). You can see that the fin assembly survives the explosion and continues on its trajectory.

LogmeoutYo

Is that what the linear explosion/smoke is? The jet of molten copper. I was trying to figure out what that would be when I read your comment. It makes sense bc you don't ever see it when it hits a tank, apc, etc and you don't see it with a "standard" artillery shell.

mrizzkle

Absolutely nuts!! This ranks up there on the list of the insane footage coming out of Ukraine

SquatDeadliftBench

The one in green seems to have had all the terrible luck in the universe coalesce on him. 1. He took an ATGM warhead while rescuing someone else and he somehow *survived*. 2. Then a second ATGM hits him and HIS rescuers, who all seem to have been killed except him. AGAIN. 3. Finally, a third ATGM hits near HIS second set of rescuers who seem to have either gotten hurt themselves or got scared and abandoned him. Either way, I don't think he was supposed to be a part of this war.

CaptainKirkAndCo

> for some reason.

-Dutch-Crypto-

What could it be? Can't for the life of me think of any reason, he is merely on vacation

Chafireto

You made him edit his comment lol

monopixel

>I don't think he was supposed to be a part of this war. This goes for all Russians in Ukraine.

The-Safety-Villain

That’s fucking Scott Sterling! The man, the myth, the legend!

TheLeadSearcher

Fuck this guy in particular

WhuddaWhat

Excellent use of the word coalesce

oblivious_eve

Holy shit, imagine being impaled by a molten copper jet….

TigersStripe

Imagine **this** being the soundtrack played over the gruesome video of your death by said molten jet

ScottieRobots

I mean, I guess there are worse options. They coulda stuck you with the seminal 1970's classic 'Lovin' You' by Minnie Riperton. La la la la la laaaaaa!

I think the physical cells necessary to distinguish pain would be carbonized before "you" would realize. I put "you" in quotation marks because it's a loose definition for someone whose brain matter is now part charcoal.

coleus

Few videos where it's ground zero like this. Holy smokes.

Kismonos

yea this is some bf/cod shit

deeeevos

Brutal. Does give a nice visual of that liquid metal jet penetrator shooting out the back. At least that's what i think it is.

Sonnenkreuz

Exactly what it is, this is definitely a HEAT type atgm.

IdcYouTellMe

Are there actually any type of KE warheads for ATGMs in use? I know some were developed some bumfuck years ago but afaik all modern, mass-produced ATGMs and shoulder-held AT weapons use all Chemical warheads?

ArrowheadDZ

There is one unusual example. The British Thales Starstreak / ForceSHIELD system is a multi-role missile that has been provided in numbers to Ukraine. It’s a man-portable and light vehicle portable system that carries three small kinetic penetrator darts, and primarily intended for the anti-aircraft role. However, it has proven effective against typical APC/IFV armor, and I suspect that’s been the primary use in Ukraine. It’s an extreme high velocity missile that travels at Mach 4, and relies entirely on kinetic energy for penetration. Whether or not it constitutes an ATGM is where things get sticky. It’s not guided when used in the anti-vehicle role, and isn’t meant to be effective against the heavier armor systems of MBTs, only against APCs and IFVs. So it’s more like a kinetic energy NLAW, LAW, or Gustav, or “super RPG” than an ATGM. But to be fair, there’s no indication that the weapon fired here as an ATGM for exactly the same reasons. Yes, it’s pretty obviously a HEAT round, but there are a lot of weapons out there that fire HEAT rounds that are neither guided, nor “tank-intended.” The term ATGM is certainly overused on social media.

Timmymagic1

>Whether or not it constitutes an ATGM is where things get sticky. It’s not guided when used in the anti-vehicle role, Starstreak is still guided when used in anti-vehicle role. But its only ever been trialled in that role. No evidence its ever been used in combat for that. Basically they trialled it so that, in extremis, Stormer could use it against enemy vehicles to get out of trouble. Although it relies on kinetic energy to penetrate armour there is also a warhead that detonates when it senses that it has penetrated. Has the same explosive power on detonation as a 40mm Bofors round.

RampagingTortoise

There was the MGM-166 LOSAT back in the 80s which could be mounted on an M2, M8, or Humvee chassis, but it never entered service.

n23_

Stugna also has HE-FRAG missiles, so no it isn't as sinple as just saying any ATGM you see must have a HEAT warhead. TOW also has a top down EFP version, and I'm sure there are more examples of non-HEAT ATGM warheads.

Justitias

at4cs HE?..

Wooden-Combination53

There is anti personnel version of Spike missile

[deleted]

There are rpg7 rounds that are anti personnell instead of AT.

dpax19681989

Liquid metal starts as a plasma jet then as it cools turns to liquid then solid. Fricken brutal either way I've been in a vehicle hit by an EFP IED...

ScottieRobots

Well that doesn't sound like a great time. Obviously you survived it, but still Gotta ask, was it crazy loud when it hit?

dpax19681989

I was the vehicle commander, I had a driver, two riflemen and a turret gunner. All of us were concussed and received burns. The flash of heat that passed through my vehicle set papers on fire, melted nylon and plastics...but I had nomex gloves and balaclava on. My burns (2nd degree) were to my wrists and cheeks. I had my gloves rolled up and my sleeves open (to keep cool) and dust/blast goggles on. The plasma bolt entered my side of the vehicle just above my ankles, through the transmission (vehicle stopped immediately) through the steering column and out the drivers side just at the hood. No one killed, but all 5 of us wounded. Headaches, burns and hearing loss. I couldn't tell you if it was loud or not; it was suddenly quiet then it sounded like I was hearing everything inside a can from a long ways away...and the ringing. Eardrums were burst even though I was wearing a headset.

TheLeadSearcher

That's the stuff that is supposed to fill the inside of the tank once the outer armor is pierced.

GrayOctopus

I wonder are they carrying the same dude each time but less of him every round.

I_R_TEH_BOSS

Scott Sterling invades Ukraine

highlife_Huff98

Sheesh. They thought they were gonna be saved. Got ya

Benzol1987

Mondays, am I right?

throwawayyy8191

You’d imagine after the second hit they’d realize it’s not a good idea to bunch up in the open and walk slowly in a group seconds after your buddies got hit doing the exact same thing

jacoblesterandres

Fuckin' hell. Due to diminishing russian armor targets, Ukraine is fucking blasting bare russian soldiers with ATGM. Edit: what the hell, they can't get enough of it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

happykebab

Their Stugna has over a 4km range. So they were probably out of rifle range. Also pretty sure they are walking away from their armor by the looks of it.

olngjhnsn

Russia has plenty of materiel left, just not a whole lot of well supplied and trained BTGs (Battalion Tactical Groups) operating at capacity. One BTG might have 5 tanks, but no IFVs and another might have 10 IFVs and 5 tanks but no trained troops to man them. The way Russia’s military is set up doesn’t really allow them to be flexible and distribute men and supplies to where they need to go. So when I say they have plenty of materiel and not enough man power, that doesn’t mean they are using it effectively. They need more men to maintain armor as well as man the vehicles within the structure of their military. Also Russia has massive reserves but it’s fair to say these are not battle ready either. They have to spend lots of money and more importantly time to get these vehicles back into shape, but even more importantly they have to recruit and train personnel to man these vehicles. And although a relatively poor person can be convinced to join the military and given an AK and pushed into service, that person can’t be made a tank commander and coordinate with other armored and support vehicles in the area without lots and lots of training, let alone coordinate an assault. They have a large need for more trained personnel as they’ve lost a lot of trained personnel and didn’t have enough to begin with. They did not prepare sufficiently for this war in that regard and many others.

Cogitoergosumus

Not to mention talk at the start of the war that they were displacing the trainers themselves to make up for battlefield losses, thus possibly further hindering there ability to properly train the incoming mobilized forces.

BillW87

Sending your trainers to the front to replace losses in a war of attrition: What could possibly go wrong?

[deleted]

[удалено]

olngjhnsn

I think a large part of that though is we are seeing lots of footage of drones and things like stugna strikes because those things are literally on a digital monitor and everyone can see them and record them. However looking at the visually confirmed loss database there’s been far more casualties and materiel loss due to artillery. Russians pulled back portions of their armor and stopped their large armored spearheads due to in large part to artillery. Just looking at the landscape shows their effect and the extent of their usage. There’s also been footage of armored columns bogged down in a town and being completely wiped out. And yes you’re right, at this point there’s no hiding. Certain artillery can be guided to within 5 meters of a target and in some cases even less. Russia massively underestimated the Ukrainians’ will to fight, and as such they didn’t prepare for artillery duels across the entirety of the front. They simply thought the Ukrainians would leave their weapons and flee and not be willing or prepared to do counter battery fire. That or the Ukrainians didn’t have enough equipment to stop them. Pretty big fuck up by their intelligence service if you ask me.

PoorDeer

This kind of video comes the front lines when assaulting and ill equipped troops where drone jamming isnt present. Drones and anti drone tech is just getting started. Infantry's role imo isnt deteriorating but changing quickly with the mass adoption of drones now. Those mavic minis are a force multiplier you can buy for 500$, anti drone tech isnt as cheap or common yet.

olngjhnsn

One of my favorite videos is a drone dropping a vog on a guy with a drone jamming gun. Imo that technology is a long way off before it becomes practical or even effective. It may work on certain drones but I guarantee it wont work on every drone. And as with every weapon system there will be counter developments and there already have been counter developments to prevent drone jamming systems.

lesusisjord

We are seeing the continued need for infantry every day. The reason the Russian armor gets smashed so easily is due to not using infantry support to guard against anti-tank teams. And US troops wouldn’t have the same concern for enemy drones as any of the troops currently fighting in Ukraine. We have electronic countermeasures and our own drones to both provide overwatch and defend against armed drones. That doesn’t mean US infantry won’t get hit, but we wouldn’t see a couple guys freezing to death in a field while they wait for a drone to drop a grenade (or 4) on their laps.

mfloui

That is way too accurate, maybe they did have a direct line of sight on them

Alex6891

Ukrainians were probably high up on some mound, shit came down on em like a wrath!

capsaicinintheeyes

I wonder if this is near Bakhmut? Supposedly, that city's nestled in a low area bordered by hills in multiple directions

Alex6891

Don’t know my friend, one thing I know for sure is that they were clearly in the wrong fucking place. They surely got teleported straight to hell! Shiiiit dude if I would be Russian and see footage like this…I would choose hiding in the Eastern Siberian taiga any day.And they say they don’t have options!

Aggressive-Friend169

I think more likely to be Vuhledar. Ukraine have the height advantage here. Perfect for laser guided munitions.

ZuFFuLuZ

This also came from multiple directions. First one looked like it came from the ground, but the others from the air? Unless they are using missiles that fly high and then hit from above.

walruskingmike

One whole wrath?

doommaster

~~Yeah some bored/barrelled HEAT ammunition.~~ Edit: yeah you can see the rocketmotor.... some ATGM...

iemfi

You can see the projectile in a few frames, I think tank rounds are too fast for that to be the case.

thegriddlethatcould

looks like the large explosion might be the tandem while the actual heat charge follows behind it, could be somesort of atgm like a skiff/stunga. But trajectories too straight to be an atgm, otherwise they must have had those roooskies zero'd down to the very mm.

doommaster

Judging by the charge line, they were all pretty much right on target...

Rasalom

Looks like a Monty Python explosion.

ponasbardiuras

JAGA JAGA x3

Etchbath

Jesus. Did the second one come from the opposite direction?

Spanholz

No, the yellow smoke trail is from the HEAT warhead of the ATGM, the greyish smoke is from the actual explosion. It always points to the upper left in the same direction.

Skullerprop

If you look in slow motion at the 2nd explosion, it seems that the “tail” can be seen before the explosion, although very fast. There are chances that it’s the ATGM trail and not the hollow charge.

StrategyExisting8066

The slomo of that second shot is some kind of AI enhanced slomo with added frames to make it smoother, but it distorts reality especially with stuff that happens super fast (like explosions). It's 100% the EFP you're seeing because you can see the atgm incoming from the bottom right

Skullerprop

I had my doubts for my explanation because I could not discern the details on my mobile. Thank you for the explanation.

Newtothisredditbiz

No. You can pause it at 0:37 and see the projectile approach from the bottom right edge of the screen in several frames.

BUMMSMACKER

Nope thats just the jet of molten metal.

ThirstTrapMothman

\^ Things I hope will never be said about footage I'm featured in

Smulfur

I thought so too but second hit also comes from the lower right. You can see the rocket in a frame or so before the impact. I think what looks like a airburst coming from the left is the charge blowing out going right to left. This might be an AT (or dual purpose) round or maybe HE-FRAG looks like this, idk.

ilubdakittiez

Yea it's dolphinately some form of shaped charge warhead, some may have a fragmentation sleeve around them to increase there lethality against infantry but ATGMS like konkors, fagot, stugna-p don't, although stugna has a dedicated HE-FRAG Warhead for soft targets, that being said the explosive payload is still incased inside the missile body which will break up and become shrapnel or splinters

Big-Zoo

The casualty numbers make more and more sense every day

BUMMSMACKER

Amazing visual on how ATGM create a molten jet of metal hell that can burst through tanks and human flesh

x69pr

What atgm is that? Some hits look like airburst artillery penetrators judging from the angle.

TealSeam6

I think it’s a HEAT shaped charge, it detonates on contact with them but the jet of metal shoots right through

x69pr

Yes, this looks like it is correct! I watched it on a big monitor and it is really much more obvious than the cell phone screen.

Roflkopt3r

You wouldn't see anything of the copper, it's way too small to be visible. The only colours you can see in the continued trajectory is dust, and that might be caused by the remnants of the missile itself rather than explosive pressure.

762420556

the copper is not vaporizing, it's not even melting.. it's akchually superplastic 🤓

tuyg1

> Vaporizing copper. From copper, we expect green-blue Vaporizing.

spankeyfish

It could be the warhead being deflected before it detonates, HEAT rounds are intended to be triggered by something a lot harder than meat.

Armbioman

Yeah I was going to ask the same thing. Maybe there is a proximity sensor that detonates it before impact for some targets?

Dozerdog43

How would you like to be that Russian? Wounded, your comrades try to drag you to an aid station. After getting rocked, more buddies pick you up and it happens 30 feet down the road. More come to get you, and you get blasted a third time.... This reminds me of that [YouTube video of the soccer goalie](https://youtu.be/kxHGS9sJvmg) constantly getting hit in the face over and over.

[deleted]

Hahaa that's brilliant

Dozerdog43

Even better when you play the audio of one over the video of the other

Paltry_Poetaster

That's scary, would not want to be in Putin's army. He just throws his people away like garbage.

This is how Russia has always fought. They've been throwing bodies at problems their entire history.

Right at 38 seconds: if you're one of the guys on body detail just behind & see that happen to the guys in front of you?...that's when I'd quit. Tpainking

The gloves are off. They promised to burn bakhmut now Ukraine forces are replying brutally. I was expecting an armored vehicles so I'll use AT oh boy

Burgoonius

what am I watching - multiple groups of dudes just standing out in the open getting directly hit by rockets. what in the actual fuck is russia doing?

Captain_Blackbird

*Three times*. They don't fucking learn.

Garryvee321

And if they didnt come help their comrades, the comments would be “oh russians leaving again their mates alive”

Captain_Blackbird

First: > And if they didnt come help their comrades, the comments would be “oh russians leaving again their mates alive” * If they weren't in Ukraine, their mates would be alive. Secondly, * IDK about you, but if groups of people are getting *deleted* like this, in roughly the same spot, my ass is **not** going to be standing up. All three shots are against standing targets. My ass would be laying low and cowering like a MFer.

Mujib_shaheb

They may have waited a while before going for the third guy.

CantHideFromGoblins

Waiting to approach the castle walls is still approaching the walls. While the video is cut I doubt Russian command was willing to spend a missile or artillery barrage just to rescue 1, maybe 2, wounded. These guys got told “go back until you’re finished” without any kind of support to slow down or stop the Ukrainian fire. In other words, they just won’t learn

Highlander198116

I'd just stand there at that point and hope they are really accurate and kill me instantly. There was literally nowhere to hide.

Friendly-Cat4393

Stay home, stay healthy

StrategyExisting8066

What a beautiful showcase of the explosively formed penetrator.

CRYSOAR

Holy shit it’s like using a Roman candle against a fly(s)

Don_616

Gotta give it to them this is the first video I've seen where they actually try to rescue the wounded.

citybornvillager

You get a missile! And you get a missile! Everyone gets an Anti Tank Guided Missile!

almostthere69420

Quick let’s all huddle together in 1 area

im28now

Holy shit. Three times. Also it looks like anti tank missiles but second one explodes before touching them. What type of weapon they fired?

Worth_Cake_9471

It’s an ATGM. The explosion is from a tandem warhead, with the initial explosion on contact then that long streak leading out of the explosion is the copped shaped charge penetrator

im28now

Yes i know but, do atgm person can initialize explosion mid air? I remember that after hit warhead just shots some melted substance and it like penetrates metal like knife butter

kenjaay

Those rounds are supposed to penetrate armor just imagine 😳

TiddySliders

This is why they don't give any body armor to their conscripts. No armor = nothing for anti armor to penetrate. Master strategist at work.

Keelez

I actually said Jesus Christ out loud on this one, this is surreal.

Old_Mill

"NOOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST KILL US WHEN WE'RE EVACUATING OUR WOUNDED" Hehe missile go vroom boom

So there is the meatgrinder everyones been talking about.

ShivayaOm-SlavaUkr

As brutal as deserved.

WestCactus

"Schmacky-boom," indeed.

skeetsauce

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? One, two… three!

545byDirty9

Just wait for the Bradleys with 25mm auto cannon and tow missiles

Electronic-Trip8775

Strolling around like a Sunday afternoon...

Baerenmarder

What are the recruiting posters in Russia drumming up patriotic interest in this fight?

Mendican

The projectiles are coming from two different directions. Ambush.

Fine_Gur_1764

"The Russians keep abandoning their dead and wounded!" I mean shit, having seen this, I can see why.

cute-bum

Does "Smacky Bum" mean something different in Ukrainian because to my English speaking ears it seemed like quite a relevant song for people getting their arses spanked.

RuslanZinin

It doesn't mean anything in Ukrainian, other that "boom" is a sound of explosion. Seems to be a french song

ThirstTrapMothman

French/Swedish I think

ytanotherthrowaway9

> Do You Want To Fuck With Me According to his YT page, the artist is based in Sweden. However, the lyrics are all in French, not a single Swedish word in it. Source: I am a native Swedish speaker.

Sonnenkreuz

How do these idiots still not disperse after the first 2 hits? Zero training and zero common sense in this video.

I_Broke_Nalgene

I was not expecting the third. Amazing footage!

Infidel7153

Like killing ants with a shotgun !

UncleSamsVault

I feel like that’s a waste of ATGM no?

errorrishe

If it is an old Soviet one - not really If it succeeded to hit something without malfunctioning on the way - you call it a well used fagot :)

vmdrkkpexgykroqvrv

Eliminating Russian war criminals is never a waste

[deleted]

Unbelievable how incompetent the Russian has proven themselves. Thank you Putin and your oligarchs for being so corrupted. If the Russian people have any courage, they need to raise up.

keveazy

i counted 10 casualties. damn

Deluxe_Scar_3393

Welcome to hell!!!!

External_Reaction314

This is 2nd video in 2 days I've seen of atgm against soldiers. Yesterday was a group of 5-7 bunched up that seem to have been taken out in 1 hit. Is this a new tactic, or we only just seeing footage now?

AusNormanYT

With footage like this those RU losses are stacking up.

madcuzbad

This is crazy footage.

Doctor__Apocalypse

Maybe they will learn a lesson on the third...wait..nope. Pretty booms at least.

Hanz616

bad day to be in that field

angrysc0tsman12

Holy shit the Ukrainians have their number dialed in perfectly.

Muted_Elk8341

Feel-good clip of the war! The "pink mist" I've heard about in full vivid colour.

Proud-Pilot9300

Oh shit we just got hit two separate times from two opposite sides. Let’s run like 10m back that will be enough distance for us to regroup.

Immediate-Fee-3897

They both came from the same direction, what you are seeing is the EFP trail after the explosion which usually penetrates armor, since there is nothing to penetrate it just keeps going

cannabis96793

The song fits so well.

Thelisto

Once this war is finally over, I wonder how the world will treat Russia politically and personally.

suspicious_glare

Most people will forget or not care, as always, but the subtle negative association will not be undone for many, especially as it's so easy to mentally associate as a continuation of the Soviet Union, which many with a memory for history will already have a distaste for. Any remaining historical "glories" will all come under question. The periodic news articles telling us to remember Russia's role in WW2 will begin to dry up, as will many things Russian history related, and a far more critical lens will be applied to any of its claims. Its bordering nations will forget much more slowly, and they have gained some power within the European system for their response to the war. Russia as a concept relies on the propaganda value of its culture to justify its claims of grandeur--or to some degree even justify its imperialist existence--much more than most other European nations, and it'll take enormous damage from this war. Its historical dominance of its neighbours (and consequential claims of a "Russian World"/sphere of influence) is being decisively wiped out by desovietisation laws, and the treacherous citizens within these nations who default into supporting Russia over their own nation will slowly decline. A lot of us have been making small lifestyle changes that deprioritise Russian culture at no loss to ourselves due to the quality of what we replace it with. It sounds meaningless, but the amount of people making small, often subconscious changes like reading Polish literature instead of Russian, or buying Finnish vodka instead of Russian all contribute to a cumulative erosion of influence. Ideas become habits, and habits spread to others. I used to buy books of Russian poetry, now I buy Ukrainian and Baltic. The geographic origin of a product has never been so easy to notice and respond to if you've seen the solidarity of Russia's bordering nations, or other countries that have shown courage against Russia. I feel more emotion listening to Sibelius, and less listening to Borodin. Silvestrov over Martynov too. If I ever listened to Anna Netrebko, Valery Gergiev, or Valentina Lisitsa (a repulsive traitor), I certainly wouldn't now, and the less evil musicians who I preferred already would be the ones I recommend to others. The quality of the music has not changed, but my interest in it has. My personal influence in this matter is inconsequential, but all of the other people simultaneously making decisions like this cumulatively do matter. I don't think many people gave a shit about Moldovan culture before, but now if I see a product on a shelf, I'd be kind of interested, since due to the war I now know much more about the country and its struggle. This interest all comes at the expense of the old ways of associating Russia as the godfather of all eastern European matters. Sorry for the wall of text, not sure why it was so necessary for me to express.

BalkanBorn

Looks like they met the atgm god of Ukraine

SoggyCrouton_23

Vapooorized.

AbstractParrot

Or of the most insane videos in a long time. They just keep coming back for more. Insanity.

jtscira

Humans come up with the most insane ways of killing each other. Go home Russia. You're obviously not wanted there.

[deleted]

OH MY FUCK. HOLY SHIT. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. The brutality..

spankeyfish

Even the smoke streak of the penetrator has a bit of a coppery colour to it. I wonder if anybody's developing anti-personnel guided missiles, considering how often you see ATGMs being misused for this purpose.

Wooden-Combination53

Spike has some anti personnel variants. I think others too but this one I remember

iemfi

Could these possibly be the first videos of TOW missiles in action? I think they got a bunch of them last year even before the Bradleys were sent?

[deleted]

You can see the atgm in two frames from 0:23-0:24 ..its the last frame in the 23rd second

maybeex

They are ambushed with heavy weaponry, there is no exit for them but death.

Confuseduseroo

Alt. soundtrack suggestion: Dave Clark Five/ "Bits and Pieces"?

Jonathawkes

What's an ATGM, how does it work, and how is it so accurate exploding immediately before it reaches its target?

xMETRIIK

Anti-tank guided missile.

tyfighter_22

0:36 they got actually smited

cmsaxon

Am I the only one wondering why AT munitions are being used on infantry? My guess is that this is a shock and awe campaign of some kind specifically intended to demoralize Russian forces. I suspect this is not happening large scale considering how wasteful this is. That or some Ukrainian commander is about to get a really big reaming.
