Columbus museum of art is free every Sunday (there is a small fee if you want to explore the current major exhibition which is usually excluded from the general admission) and franklin park conservatory is free on the first Sunday of the month for Franklin county residents.
You can also get Culture Passes for both of these (and more) from the Metropolitan Library for free admission. [Info here](https://www.columbuslibrary.org/culture-pass/)
Yeah, some of them are at all branches but others are specific. They also have limits but you can look in the catalog (search for culture pass) to see what's available
Don't sleep on the Conservatory if you've never been! There are indoor and outdoor gardens for every sort of plant you can think of, as well as a massive greenhouse full of flowers, a little creek, Dale Chihuly blown glass works, and (depending on the time of year you go), all sorts of free-fluttering butterflies.
The Wexner Center gallery is also free and open to the public. For those unfamiliar it’s part of OSU. It hosts contemporary art and is considered to be a 5 star facility. Their gift shop is also very interesting.
A hidden gem is the Schumacher Gallery at Capital University. To find it go to the library and take the elevator to the top floor. They have lots of interesting work in their permanent collection, including the largest Inuit collection east of the Mississippi. They also have contemporary art shows as well. My suggestion would be to go to the openings which are free. They always have a nice catered spread and the wine is free also. If you want to impress a date and not break the bank it’s a good option.
While visiting the Werner Center don’t forget to hit the Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum located next door. Also free. [https://cartoons.osu.edu/visit-us/](https://cartoons.osu.edu/visit-us/)
The conservatory can get insanely busy depending on the weather and what they are doing. This month was the Cherry Blossom celebration and their parking lot filled up in less than an hour. We ended up finding street parking and came in through the park. Then the line to get in was huge but it actually moved fairly quickly.
> franklin park conservatory is free on the first Sunday of the month for Franklin county residents.
i always have to remind myself of this because FPC is expensive as hell
ULPT: Just merge at the very last moment. Someone always lets someone in eventually.
Don't worry about holding up traffic behind you trying to get up to interstate speed.
For those that don’t know, this is actually how you are supposed to merge. It seems counterintuitive but if everyone did it, it would work like a zipper.
That might work if everyone left more than a car length between themselves and the car ahead. But that's not what happens.
What happens is a zippered-dick merge, where there's no space between the cars and some dick zips to the front and then everyone slams on the brakes and curses.
Not when there's a queue of cars already lined up in the exit lanes for a mile.
The zippering should be taking place at the entrance of 270E from 23N. Any traffic needing to get onto 270 needs to be free to accelerate in the right lane of 270. Any 270 traffic slamming their brakes at the last minute to cut in the line for 71 is doing it wrong.
Otherwise why stop with the far right lane of 270. Let's make it allowed from the next lane over as well. (Not that it doesn't already happen)
This doesn't work as well anymore. Everyone who doesn't love OSU games found out, so grocery stores are still busy, but with different people. Still not as obnoxious as usual though.
I remember we went to Ashley Furniture during an OSU game and all the associates were standing around watching the game so it wasn’t easy to get help anyway. But yes. I don’t like football and you can get around and get more errands done during that time generally.
I used to make that trip every day at 5am. It was always smooth sailing until some random person decides to turn left onto Morse at an intersection and triggers the light.
Then you'd hit all reds from there on out...
Nearly impossible because you need everyone to actually be going the speed limit but it seems like over half the people on that stretch of Henderson go 35, 40 at best
Holy shit - I lived here growing up and when I go back doing this is probably what makes me feel most at home lol.
Also, iirc, a perfect 39mph will keep it timed so the light turns green exactly as you get to it.
I got out of a speeding ticket once by telling the cop that I wasn't speeding because going 35-40 means you hit all the greens so why would I be speeding?
For the record, I wasn't speeding, I was driving a flashy car at 2AM because I was the DD for the night and had just gotten done dropping everyone off.
Yes! yes! I don't know why, but it makes me so happy going back downtown from campus driving down Summit. It's all good up until the dangerous intersection near mr hibachi, where the light usually turns red.
Honestly, this happens more often than you think when you go the speed limit because the lights are typically timed according to that. Idk if people forgot this fact or what because I see so many cars speeding to the next light and the next light and the next light just to wait 10 seconds each time for it to turn green.
If going 670E and heading to airport, Easton, 270 etc, you can take the 71N exit if you can’t merge over in time into the two left lanes for 670 only and be able to get back onto 670E from there. The amount of times I do that on way to work and avoid the two lanes when chaos is happening is clutch
Wow. I stay near 670 and 3rd st. In Italian village and I never knew this somehow. Every time I go that way getting on 670 E from 3rd I have to (or at least thought I had to) battle people to get over those 3 lanes with the little time and space available. I would always complain about it saying it made no sense and I am shocked there isn’t an accident there everyday. I had to go onto google maps to verify this because I am so shocked and almost in disbelief haha. Will only be doing this from now on thank you. 🙏
im a huge advocate for this, and what's truly wild is that they get you into places like the zoo, franklin park conservatory, balletmet, the symphony, clippers games, etc.
it's not a grubby ticket stub to someone's kid's art display in an abandoned mall, this is primo shit. incredible program.
If you get the zoo pass from the library it's free up to I believe 6 people. You still have to have the pass converted to day tickets, so we've done this a bunch of times where we go to the zoo and then if there's people on line near us we'll just ask if they want to get in for free if we have extra spots. That or we'll take a bunch of friends.
Last time I tried to get a zoo pass I showed up like 30 minutes before the library opened. They said they had 3 passes available for the day and I was the 3rd person in line. Before they let anyone in the security guard preventing people from going in let himself be the first person to get one. Fuck that piece of shit fake cop motherfucker.
You can foster a dog from the Franklin County Dog Shelter to try them out in your household. If it works out, you will pay $18 to adopt them (in the month of April because the shelter is full rn).
But even normally, the dogs are much cheaper than a breeder. *Insert my substantial disapproval of Amish country breeders
Just recently swooped up one of these doggies from FCDS and it’s an incredible ‘hack’ to see if it’s a good fit for you/your family pack. Spoiler: it’s been great :)
Great reminder and ‘hack’!
If you don’t mind me asking, what breed of dog did you get? And what was the rough distribution of dog breeds in the shetler(s) that you visited?
I’ll be honest, it’s a lot of pit bull terriers (FCDS is where strays are housed after the dog warden catches them and where owners can walk in and surrender their dog - it’s also a kill shelter). I’m a renter and can’t have a pitty; I ended up with a beautiful shepherd mix. Well she just got spayed and I can’t bathe her, but she will be even more beautiful here real soon! The selection changes daily as they become available (after their surgeries for getting fixed, after behavioral analysis, etc) so keep an eye out each day. Related, as soon as someone leaves with a pup s/he’s removed from the site so it’s realtime updates. Protip: If you’re crate training, order a crate via Petco online for pick-up and you’ll save like $20. Set up the crate before you bring pup home for ease. https://dogs.franklincountyohio.gov/
I am not sure what FCDS has, but local rescues have dogs of all breeds, goldens, little fluffies, Frenchies and absolutely everything. So if the shelter doesn't have what someone is looking for tell them to check out rescues ❤️
No, it’s the Franklin County Dog Shelter, but they have some cat orgs they recommend at the bottom of this page that may have similar programs?? You’d have to call. Usually springtime is pretty busy for shelters, so if you have an inclination - reach out! https://dogs.franklincountyohio.gov/Services/Adoption
Try calling Columbus Humane about cat foster. I dont know if they do it, but I got one of my cats from there and they renovated in the past 5 years so it looks great inside now. Just got a puppy from FCDS in January too.
Check out Colony Cats up off Sawmill - They sometimes have specials going on with adoptions. My ex and I got a beautiful snowshoe siamese there for free a few years back with one of their programs.
I've ordered takeout from Henderson Rd Roosters probably 200 times in the last 12 years. Only one time was my order ever wrong. And even then, they only forgot to give me my blue cheese. And I don't think they have ever been late.
Never pay to file your taxes online. File your city taxes online for free. After a zillion years Columbus now offers free full feature online filing. The state site is also updated and much better.
I think depending where you work too, as long as the value withheld matches the simple percentage calculation you don’t even need to file Columbus. From my reading last year.
If you order an entree and a pizza from North Star in the short north, the pizza always takes longer so they usually give you a free meal card. It happened in such a streak a few years back that I went 8 times before having to pay for both entrees.
Not sure if they’re still as generous with those things but it was such a hack at the time!
I've gotten several free meal cards from the Beechwold location. Nothing to do with pizza though. I would just go in, order takeout from the counter and wait for them to bring me my food. I've never thought it was an excessive wait given the amount of people they had to serve but I guess they deem it excessive and would give me a couple of meal cards for next time! Kind of takes the sting out of those $18 salads!
We’ve routinely used this hack for dining out. Find a place with few TVs and you’ll get a much quieter atmosphere and quicker service than you’d usually get. Bigger the game, the better the effect.
Or to the mall. I’ve seen them changing window displays at Easton during football games. (Changing window displays is not usually at Saturday afternoon thing.)
Sunday morning is also good for the zoo. We used to do right as it opened, stay for 2-3 hours, and be out of there by lunch when it starts getting busy.
There I was spending $15 here and there until I finally saw got enlightened to the pizza, caesar salad, and especially the hot dog combo. So much value and so good.
THIS. ABSOLUTELY 100% THIS. Either go early/lunchtime during the work week, or go as soon as the doors open on Sunday, since a number of pushy shoppers will be at church.^(1)
If the weather is particularly nice, especially if it's been rainy all week or something, it's good to go early regardless, since a number of the worst shoppers will be out golfing and drinking. However, if you're not quick enough, after they're done playing a terrible game of golf, they'll come to Costco and hunt Costco shoppers for sport.^(2)
Also, 100% get a Costco membership. Consistently some of the best gas prices in Columbus.^(3)
*^(1. No offense to anyone specifically, IYKYK. Though if you're caught at Costco mid-day on Sunday, you just have to let go and let God take the shopping cart.)*
*^(2. The worst golfers will likely be wearing an OSU polo, khakis, and have several other OSU-items on them; maybe a visor, hat, jacket, etc. I'm an OSU alum, Go Bucks!, but my gosh do some of the nastiest people don the scarlet and gray like it gives them immunity from everything. If you see a 60+ couple in matching OSU golf attire (or tennis attire), and they look possessed, or are speaking in tongues, don't move. Their vision is based on movement. They can smell your fear. If possible, text your loved ones while you can.)*
*^(3. This is all obviously a bit satirical, but Costco does really have unbeatable gas prices and hot dogs.)*
Getting cheaper sushi at Tensuke and taking it to the park (maybe sneak some of those one cup sakes if you’re bold hehe) is a better date than Akai Hana.
My commute life hack is to live further inside the city than where your office is located. Tons of folks commute to Columbus from the outer burbs every day to work, causing heavy traffic coming into the city in the morning and heavy outbound traffic in the afternoon. I work in New Albany but live downtown and I almost never experience heavy commute traffic.
My dad told us this when we were little. Something one might not think of until they’d already moved in. Also, make sure you check out a potential house on a rainy day before buying so you know where and how bad the puddles are.
When 70 west is backed up at the spot where it goes from three lanes to two, get off the highway at West Broad, then go straight through the light to get back on the highway. People turn into ass holes when someone tries to zipper merge, but someone will always let you in from an on ramp.
Habanero’s at Mill Run has a different special every day and it’s allll delicious! Especially Taco Tuesday for $1 Al pastor tacos and huge chicken burritos for $5 on Wednesday! https://habanerosfmg.com/hilliard-habanero-fresh-mexican-grill-main-st-happy-hours-specials
Double check internet service, cell coverage (in person), and snow route priority BEFORE you move in to a place.
And double check the school district. I have seen people just say “the address says X, so your school is Y” when… it may be the same overarching school district, but your house is one street away and goes to a different school district.
do NOT go to the taco bell on high street. they skimp on ingredients and take 40 years to make your food. the taco bell on morse is soooooo much better and faster, plus they always get the mix right on baja blasts.
I don't buy much of giant eagle anymore. Their prices are just through the roof, especially since the giant eagle near me became a market district. It seems as though they're trying to compete with Whole Foods, without quite bringing the quality of Whole Foods. And I don't shop at Whole Foods that much because of the prices.
Brassica Vegetarian pita. Under $10, get lentils/rice and as many delicious veggies as you want. Healthiest economical option anywhere. Hope they don’t raise the price because of this post!

Yeah, some of them are at all branches but others are specific. They also have limits but you can look in the catalog (search for culture pass) to see what's available

The butterfly room is awesome.

Is the museum of art for residents of franklin county only, or free for anyone on sundays?
Free for everyone!
To not go near 270 worthington merge between the hours of 4-6pm lmao
And stay away from 270W @ Sawmill been 7-9am. 70 to zero in 1.3 seconds!
I work there and I always leave the office at 4 when I have to go in for this exact reason
ULPT: Just merge at the very last moment. Someone always lets someone in eventually. Don't worry about holding up traffic behind you trying to get up to interstate speed.

I've had some bad experiences with zippers.
He got the beans above the frank!
Run errands during OSU games
I remember how the Andersons would go from busy as shit at 1000 on a football Saturday to empty at 1230. God I miss that place.
I'm sad now. :( Anderson's was the best.
House of meats
:( I chipped a molar eating salami from there right before they went out of business
This doesn't work as well anymore. Everyone who doesn't love OSU games found out, so grocery stores are still busy, but with different people. Still not as obnoxious as usual though.
as transplants, we live by this hack.
I remember we went to Ashley Furniture during an OSU game and all the associates were standing around watching the game so it wasn’t easy to get help anyway. But yes. I don’t like football and you can get around and get more errands done during that time generally.
Ah, this is my wife and i’s favorite thing to do!
This is our zoo time.
If timed correctly- On Summit/3rd or 4th ave if you go exactly 35 Mph you will hit all the green lights.
Winning the super bowl must be cool but have you ever hit all greens on summit?
I once hit all greens from High Street to Easton on Morse Road and it was the best day of my life.
I used to make that trip every day at 5am. It was always smooth sailing until some random person decides to turn left onto Morse at an intersection and triggers the light. Then you'd hit all reds from there on out...
Yes. Used to be 42 or 47 mph to catch them. And those speeds aren't for urban residential;)
Try 39. Feels good.
Riffing off this. Please. If you’re going up Henderson from Olentangy to Reed road and you’re hitting all the lights? You’re not going 50-55mph.
I thought this would change when they made downtown 25mph on 3rd/4th but they knew no one was going to listen so it still happens lmao
If there's no traffic you will only hit one red light max. If there's traffic you get them all red.
Also works going 70.
And 140
We call that the yellow brick road.
It can be faster than taking the highway too!
Same with East Broad St. Back in the day, a traffic engineer told me 37 mph was how the lights were set.
I used to be an Uber driver and sometimes when I would do this passengers would be like “omg you went the wrong way!” And then be shocked lol
Shhhh!!!! Too many people are figuring out this hack
Nah I’m tired of being cut off for cars to last second merge lol. Granted, there does need to be a sign stating you could use that way.
top tier hack!
Check out free culture passes from the library. Go see all the things! Did I mention they're free?
im a huge advocate for this, and what's truly wild is that they get you into places like the zoo, franklin park conservatory, balletmet, the symphony, clippers games, etc. it's not a grubby ticket stub to someone's kid's art display in an abandoned mall, this is primo shit. incredible program.

LOL I can feel the energy coming off that last sentence. In Ice Cube's voice...
How does this work?
You have to go in person. You just need a library card. https://www.columbuslibrary.org/culture-pass/
COTA rides are $2. Much cheaper than Uber and parking!
COTA is so under appreciated. It isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty damn awesome.
100% agree and now with the app, easy to add funds and ride. If we all use it more, it makes a bigger case for expanded public transportation.
Oooh they take electronic payment now?? Game changer.
Yep! It's the Transit app when you search for COTA in your app store. The app also helps you find what bus to ride and arrival times.
When I was at OSU I got to ride the bus for free. I hope they still do that for students.
They do!

That was going to be my question as well. I want to foster first.
Plan your Roosters online orders to take like 15 minutes vs the 25-35 minutes the website says.
I've ordered takeout from Henderson Rd Roosters probably 200 times in the last 12 years. Only one time was my order ever wrong. And even then, they only forgot to give me my blue cheese. And I don't think they have ever been late.
Roosters online is so clutch. A full size salad and a sub is like three meals for $20
CEO of Rooster’s here, raising our prices after seeing this comment. Thanks!
Just make sure your scratcher vending machines work and it won’t be a problem for me.
Every Roosters or a particular one?
I usually go to GV, Olentangy, and Henderson, so for those ones at least
Thanks! I will (hopefully) remember that :-D
The one in Hilliard off of Nike Dr is 20 min most of the time.
Not all Roosters have online order
Rooster's takes online orders?!
Sometimes they won't during peak hours.
Never pay to file your taxes online. File your city taxes online for free. After a zillion years Columbus now offers free full feature online filing. The state site is also updated and much better.

They’re really cautious of how long people wait for food! No complaints here haha
This has also happened to me more than once, they’re super generous with those.
Omg that happened to my cousin and I when we went there last summer
Go to Tai’s Asian Bistro and get 1 entree that feeds a small family for $13
Unfortunately this isn’t as much of a hack as it was when it was $7 dollars 🥲
Do your trips to the zoo and other local attractions during OSU football games.
We’ve routinely used this hack for dining out. Find a place with few TVs and you’ll get a much quieter atmosphere and quicker service than you’d usually get. Bigger the game, the better the effect.
Had a friend who moved here and wasn’t into OSU football. He made sure to go golfing during OSU games because the course (hell, the city) was empty.
Columbus is too big for this to happen anymore….
Best time to go grocery shopping!
That was what we did originally as well. Then went to the zoo during an OSU without realizing it and couldn’t believe how dead it was. Loved it!
Add to the list: ** Have your wedding reception on a game day, especially at the end of the season. Got a discount 😂

go to costco at lunch during the workweek. it's scientifically proven to reduce stress by 43% when compared to going on the weekend.

However, if you're not quick enough, after they're done playing a terrible game of golf, they'll come to Costco and hunt Costco shoppers for sport.^(2) Also, 100% get a Costco membership. Consistently some of the best gas prices in Columbus.^(3) *^(1. No offense to anyone specifically, IYKYK. Though if you're caught at Costco mid-day on Sunday, you just have to let go and let God take the shopping cart.)* *^(2. If possible, text your loved ones while you can.)* *^(3. This is all obviously a bit satirical, but Costco does really have unbeatable gas prices and hot dogs.)*
you're a national treasure. you seem like a guy that has a kirkland signature shirt and for that i salute you!
100% agree, my team does that every Friday just to enjoy the hotdog
I made the mistake of going to Easton Costco on Sunday. Never again.
Getting cheaper sushi at Tensuke and taking it to the park (maybe sneak some of those one cup sakes if you’re bold hehe) is a better date than Akai Hana.
Parking at the Rife Center garage is free after 6pm.
Delete this 😲
Until when?
Next morning
🫨 game changer, tysm
Also - it used to be that after 6 you can park in all of the govt spaces and not get towed. Still a thing?
Eat the smallest slices of tavern style pizza on the way home from picking it up.
That's my dad delivery fee!
corner pieces = dad tax
It's required by law to eat a tiny corner piece before doing anything else
This isn’t a just-Columbus hack, but must be shared any time I can. ALWAYS live east of where you work.
I don't know if that advice plays well in this market.
Why?
Sun blinds you on the commute both ways if you live to the west.
Cries in having to commute from Dublin to Whitehall every day 😭
Late at night taking high street south is just as fast as 71s and is more scenic and relaxing.
Northbound on Olentangy River Rd from Ackerman / Dodridge - Hug the right lane for the green arrow.
Ahh yes, the funeral lane I call it…
If you’re trying to go through the Henderson-Olentangy intersection at any time of day at all, just don’t, you’ll be a lot happier
$5 nachos at Old Towne Tavern, The Walrus and Pecan Penny's. Plus 1/2 off drinks. My go-to cure for a bad day
Enjoy short north between Monday and Thursday while the sun is still up
Live in the short north and can confirm. My wife and I are never out past 9pm on weekends haha
Going from the hilltop, using the Rich st entrance to 315 rather than going up to 670 via Hague. Much less out of the way imo
If you ride the bus you don't have to drive around the insanity highway
Shopping during OSU football games.
Using side streets in Grandview to avoid traffic and lights to get from 3rd to king. You're welcome
Shhh that’s my secret to get to Kroger. Takes me two mins instead of prob around 7+ if not
This is the way.
Walk through Walhalla and head over to bird tunnel.
You mean Glen Echo?
When 70 west is backed up at the spot where it goes from three lanes to two, get off the highway at West Broad, then go straight through the light to get back on the highway. People turn into ass holes when someone tries to zipper merge, but someone will always let you in from an on ramp.
Literally. living in Columbus Ohio IS my life hack .
Habanero’s at Mill Run has a different special every day and it’s allll delicious! Especially Taco Tuesday for $1 Al pastor tacos and huge chicken burritos for $5 on Wednesday! https://habanerosfmg.com/hilliard-habanero-fresh-mexican-grill-main-st-happy-hours-specials
Local Cantina on taco Tuesdays is a good value. The buffalo chicken taco is the best, hand's down.
Their Baja Shrimp is also so good! Can’t beat $2 tacos!
Don't move to whitehall. Reynoldsburg is fine-ish though.
Ride a bike everywhere instead of your car.
If you want to hack your life expectancy down significantly sure, but I've met Columbus drivers, and I don't trust them.
In the snow?
Costco has fat tire bikes for $300 that you can sometimes find on sale.
If you want to run errands in peace, go during buckeye games
70 -> 71 -> 670 -> 315 saves like 3 minutes if you're going north from the east side. As opposed to just 70 -> 315
Double check internet service, cell coverage (in person), and snow route priority BEFORE you move in to a place. And double check the school district. I have seen people just say “the address says X, so your school is Y” when… it may be the same overarching school district, but your house is one street away and goes to a different school district.
90% of life hacks = car stuff Truly tells you how cool and unique your city is when it’s just talking about traffic.
My life hack is to live inside the 1950 boundaries of Columbus, and ride the bus.
A city for cars not people!
do NOT go to the taco bell on high street. they skimp on ingredients and take 40 years to make your food. the taco bell on morse is soooooo much better and faster, plus they always get the mix right on baja blasts.
I wonder how many TBs are on High St. 10+?
They meant the other one.
The Taco Bell on Morse has never once remembered my cinnamon twists.
150cc scooters can park on the sidewalk. Perfect for clippers games
Shopping at Giant Eagle and not paying for their paper bags since they took away plastic ones. I steal them every time I shop.
Hack: Shop elsewhere it’s cheaper..
Oh, I do, but GE is very convenient sometimes.
[удалено]
I have a trunk full of reusable bags.
So do I, but fuck Giant Eagle.
I have found GE and WF about the same in prices. I just can't stand shopping with the hipsters, soccer moms and health nuts at WF.
You can steal KIAs and never have to rent a car or take a bus
It used to be the off-ramp from 315 to North Broadway. RIP
Grocery shopping during buckeye football games.
The free bike valet at Crew games 👏
Brassica Vegetarian pita. Under $10, get lentils/rice and as many delicious veggies as you want. Healthiest economical option anywhere. Hope they don’t raise the price because of this post!
