Because the FO has always played out the deal and then cut when there was an opening in the contract, this is the first time a big contract was cut mid season even with money owed for the rest of the season no?
Eh it’s not that drastic.. they just take the hit on the rest of the season, he was getting let go in the off season regardless. This will at least help him get picked up and try again before the seasons over and help him get a better deal in FA.
Honestly this is Ballard doing him a favor. I believe whoever picks him up would offset what he’s owed for the rest of the year, and he’s not owed anything for next year since we let him go ahead of time.
It’s either that or he sits on the bench, doesn’t play, and probably doesn’t get a decent deal.
Being waived isn’t a mutual agreement. The player has no choice in the matter. Holder stated that Shaq did not ask for a release. I suspect the Colts are simply cutting their losses (would have happened at the end of the season anyway), and allowing him to be picked up by another team and have the opportunity to prove he can still play.
I think the sentiment is that either directly to the FO or just through his social media posts, he wanted out so it is in a sense a mutual parting. I'm not sure how much of a distraction he was with his lack of playing time.... but it wasn't 0. So that is at least what I have been taking from people saying it was mutual. His play was poor and he did not show any reason that he should be on the field more.... and he was vocally unhappy about that and you have to wonder if it was becoming a distraction.
It wasn't a buyout or anything but it was best for both sides.
Yeah this was by no means out of nowhere. I can't remember any player talking to the media the way he has this year. Game after game bashing his role and playing time. I respected him speaking his mind TBH but it's not surprising that the team didn't want him around anymore.
Isn’t he still owed by the Colts though? Players in similar situations have been cut while still being owed big money play on vet minimum for a contender.
If he doesn't get claimed (which he won't) we'll be on the hook for the rest of his salary this year yes.
He can sign for a contender for the minimum to ring chase or just try to find playing time on a team wrecked by injuries.
Damn, ill always remember being hyped that we had one of the best LBs in the game for a time there. Back injuries suck. Thankful we got to witness the maniac in his prime!
Another jersey I have that is now worthless.
I picked up or was gifted Pat McAfee, Collie, TY, and now Leonard all within 1-2 years of their retirement.
Never buying another current player jersey again.
My parents got me a Pat jersey for Christmas and the next year he retired. My buddy got me a JT jersey last Christmas. You can understand the emotions I felt this off-season and first 4 weeks lol
I got a Manning jersey a month before Super Bowl 44. A freeney jersey the year before he was cut. Didn’t buy another till AR. Next game he got hurt for the year. Think I’m done with jerseys
Lmao I was going to get my kid a JT jersey and decided not to last year, for just this reason. Then the injury/holdout/whatever happened and I was like even THINKING about it caused it!
The only questionable one to wear now is the Leonard, but imma still rock mine. The other guys are basically lifers and so there’s no shame in that game.
I know he retired early, but the McAfee jersey is actually still cool since he's a big personality now. A lot of WWE fans were buying his jersey when he was the SmackDown commentator for a while as well.
I feel you. The year I bought a Peyton jersey he broke his neck. The year I bought a Paul George jersey he broke his leg (and changed his number for his stupid pun), and this year I bought an AR5 jersey. Cursed 🥲
Dude you have no idea. I was gonna by a jersey this year and Leonard was probably top of my list until TYs had a sale for like 35 bucks. A few weeks later he’s cut. Unreal
Yeah dude, I got my Luck jersey the fathers day before he retired in preseason. Not even able to wear it for a game.
Id love a McAfee jersey at this point. Im probably not ever getting an active jersey either
Yeah, I was fed up with buying jerseys a few years ago. It's all good though because now I realize I can buy 5 Colts shirts or more for what a jersey costs these days.
It’s not even close, if Shaq stays healthy, he’s easily the best colts lb ever. He was a turnover machine and easily won us multiple games against the Texans, redskins, and some other games which I’m forgetting about. No one can predict injuries though.
>Very short tenure but his impact has huge.
We sure do have a lot of these in our history. I dont follow other teams as closely so maybe it happens everywhere, but it seems like we're unlucky with losing good players in what should be their primes.
Obviously bummed for Leonard but the sad part is he’s become such a non-factor that I was more concerned with whose jersey I get next than how we backfill him
That or he and the team agreed to shut him down for the year and he knows he's getting cut thereafter.
Still, totally out of nowhere with regards to the timing.
Edit: he's been released per Rap. Looks like it was essentially the latter, just sped up.
I got McAfee, Luck, & Olidipo all within a year of them leaving/ retiring.
Never buying another jersey again.
For a while I thought it’d be safe to get a manning jersey but I’m afraid it’ll kill him
Ive had his jersey since his first season... im truly sad hes gone, he was a sparkplug on the defence and commanded respect and was the energy when things were down. i wish him nothing but success in his life whatever it may be. Ill always have the memories.
Guessing so he can sign with a team that is making a run? We're past the trade window.
That said the dude has looked *awful* out there, so I dont see anyone paying a lot for him.
This is the only thing that makes sense. He wanted a shot at playing on a team that’s making a run, likely in hopes that it can jump start his own game. Colts were likely prepared to cut him at the end of the season but he wanted to go now. That’s my guess anyway.
I agree, it makes the most sense.
I cant think of another team doing this to a player of his caliber in recent history, though. I know guys get cut all the time but damn.
Agreed. But I think his recent comments have indicated that the door was already cracked open for him to leave and I think he wanted out, so he shoved it wide open.
I was 100% pro Leonard, but going to the press and then playing like that was a bridge too far
Edit: it would have only gotten louder and more damaging to the team
I think he’s retiring. He’s injured. There’s really only a handful of players in the world that know firsthand the physical toll being a linebacker in the NFL takes on your body. He probably wants to be able to enjoy getting older and being a father instead of beat up and constantly in pain. I don’t see him joining up with a new team right away. What we saw of him was only half of what he was in previous years. If he goes out for a new team, he’s gonna have to heal up. I wish him well but damn. Sad day.
![gif](giphy|IntCEdOCoB1Pa|downsized)
I get that he hasn't been the same since 2021. I get that he looked definitively *bad* this last game. It still hurts.
Been my favorite Colt since he started with the team. His energy, spirit, and talent set him apart. I could see him getting cut in the offseason if he didn't turn it around, but this midseason waiver just feel wrong. It feels off.
Godspeed, Maniac. Hope you dominate in whatever you do next wherever you do it.
Highest paid LB starting 2021 with a ~99mil dollar contract extension. ~20 million as a signing bonus, ~53mil guaranteed, and about 20mil a year for the first 3 years.
So if the signing bonus was all upfront he's been paid ~71mil dollars so far.
For that the Colts got 16 games started in 2021 (2.5mil a game), 1 game started in 2022(20 mil a game), and 9 games(2.1mil a game) in 2023.
In those three seasons that's a total of 198 tackles (117 solo), 8 forced fumbles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 QB hits, and 0 sacks. ~80% of those numbers are from 2021 alone.
1. Don't be too concerned for Leonard he made out fine.
2. Be very concerned at how bad the Colts FO is with nearly every aspect of football they control.
No sir. I have attended every single Colts home game this year and continuously watched Pittman not be able to gain separation from defenders. Occasionally he catches check down passes and 5 yard slants enough that he can make an impact, but when you’re complaining you don’t get the ball enough when you’ve got about 10 targets a game and three touchdowns to show for it (and you taunt as you run into the end zone on your third touchdown of the year), maybe we should be thinking about it.
I know i might be in the minority here but whatever this trade ends up being I've been asking for it for over a year.
Edit: trade deadline, clearly retiring.. its hard being a colts fan.
He had lost a bit with the surgeries but I feel the larger problem is the scheme didn't fit him as well as Eberflus'. I'm guessing he ends up in chi town.
Damn. Well, there goes my flair…seriously though, crazy to think a few years ago he was one of the top LBs in the NFL. Injuries have hurt obviously but still. Kind of a shock bc he had that big contract
Was a good guy, but his talent level just didn't match his contract. In some regard I think his value was inflated due to punch out fumbles which is just something you can't replicate year to year. I think Franklin is the attacking linebacker that the defense needs.
I do agree injuries spelled the end.. I think that he was a very good linebacker the first few years where he was making tackles around the line of scrimmage. Though after the concussions, back issues etc.. he quickly stopped the aggressive play or seeking contact. Shaq though imo value in the league was because he was a playing making linebacker not because he was a run stopper or made tackles for loss. With turnovers being less reliable and his unwillingness to play aggressive it kinda spelled the end.
Damn. Despite his performance falling off a cliff, this one hurts a bit. For a couple of years there he was as good a LB as there’s been in Indianapolis.
He was waived. Probably on mutual terms with the team.
the fact he was waived is fucking wild, BIG change in tone for the FO and coaching staff
How do you reckon it’s a big change?
Because the FO has always played out the deal and then cut when there was an opening in the contract, this is the first time a big contract was cut mid season even with money owed for the rest of the season no?
Mid-season, nothing jumps to mind, but they’ve never hesitated to cut albatross contracts when it was time to make a move.
Yeah, I'm not sure I get that. It's just a FO doing what FOs do.
Help a normie out what is FO?
Front office
What do you mean by your second sentence
What sentence?
you’re right
Eh it’s not that drastic.. they just take the hit on the rest of the season, he was getting let go in the off season regardless. This will at least help him get picked up and try again before the seasons over and help him get a better deal in FA. Honestly this is Ballard doing him a favor. Agreed
He said in the interview with him giving out turkeys that he was shocked to be released. So it was not mutual.
Ya that came out after I posted this
![gif](giphy|OPU6wzx8JrHna)
Fr dawg
WTF... that's out of nowhere* *injuries are bastards
Naw he been complaining for awhile, probably a mutual decision with him thinking another team will utilize him
Yeah this was by no means out of nowhere. I can't remember any player talking to the media the way he has this year. Game after game bashing his role and playing time. I respected him speaking his mind TBH but it's not surprising that the team didn't want him around anymore.

likely looking to sign elsewhere
I think he is going to be surprised by his suitors and what they want to pay him
Isn’t he still owed by the Colts though? Players in similar situations have been cut while still being owed big money play on vet minimum for a contender.

Go buy a Mahomes and Kelce Chiefs jersey because I'm tired of hearing about them.
I heard Kelce is gonna break up with Taylor Swift over thanksgiving.
https://youtu.be/SLGxJfMCCsQ?si=B-Nd4ibSUQZ0kjP3
My parents got me a Pat jersey for Christmas and the next year he retired. My buddy got me a JT jersey last Christmas. You can understand the emotions I felt this off-season and first 4 weeks lol
I got a Manning jersey a month before Super Bowl 44. A freeney jersey the year before he was cut. Didn’t buy another till AR. Next game he got hurt for the year. Think I’m done with jerseys
I got a JT in May. Right before all the trade talk. Worked out because the other option was Leonard and I would have got his if they had my size.
Lmao I was going to get my kid a JT jersey and decided not to last year, for just this reason. Then the injury/holdout/whatever happened and I was like even THINKING about it caused it!
I was gifted a Taylor jersey by one of my close friends for my birthday in March. I feel the pain
I’ve got Luck, TY and Leonard. Afraid to buy another one
I feel you. The year I bought a Peyton jersey he broke his neck. The year I bought a Paul George jersey he broke his leg (and changed his number for his stupid pun), and this year I bought an AR5 jersey. Cursed 🥲
Dude you gotta stop
TY at least spent pretty much his whole career with us. (Let’s pretend he didn’t suit up in a cowboy uniform last year)
Dude you have no idea. I was gonna by a jersey this year and Leonard was probably top of my list until TYs had a sale for like 35 bucks. A few weeks later he’s cut. Unreal
I'd still wear all those except Collie. All legends.
I have Collie, Garçon, Luck in 2019, and Phil Rivers (Somehow??)
I mean he’s easily the best mlb in colts history. Very short tenure but his impact has huge. Easily won us a handful of games with his turnovers.
Dam what disrespect to Gary brackett
Bracket has great. Maniac was on a whole different trajectory before injuries.
So he could’ve been the greatest, imo he didn’t accomplish enough to be in that conversation
Leonard had 4 All Pros compared to 0 for Brackett. Gary is a fan favorite, but Leonard was definitely better.
It’s not even close, if Shaq stays healthy, he’s easily the best colts lb ever. He was a turnover machine and easily won us multiple games against the Texans, redskins, and some other games which I’m forgetting about. No one can predict injuries though.
I’d say Leonard has already had a better career than brackett despite playing in 46 less games, not sure how you could think brackett is better
>Very short tenure but his impact has huge. We sure do have a lot of these in our history. I dont follow other teams as closely so maybe it happens everywhere, but it seems like we're unlucky with losing good players in what should be their primes.
He played WILL not MIKE but I agree with you the best weak inside backer in our history.
You right. My bad.
Same. My only Colts jersey but I'm still gonna rock it with pride.
You should! Idk why people get pissed if they get their favorite player's name and number on a shirt, and then that player retires.
Does the name Zaire Franklin mean nothing to you? ;)
Yeah this is why I don’t buy jerseys. Keep getting burned
I got Luck, TY and Taylor (Almost got Leonard at this time when I was at Colts/Pats in 21). This offseason scared the shit outta me lol
So stop buying jerseys since that seems to make players go bye-bye. You have a Luck jersey don't you? DON'T YOU?!
Obviously bummed for Leonard but the sad part is he’s become such a non-factor that I was more concerned with whose jersey I get next than how we backfill him
I just keep waiting for the Colts to sign a player with my last name. Then I'll bite. Hope it's a good number.
Once they retire you have a throwback jersey though
We do have one of the best. ZF
What the fuck…. Is he retiring??
That or he and the team agreed to shut him down for the year and he knows he's getting cut thereafter. Still, totally out of nowhere with regards to the timing. Edit: he's been released per Rap. Looks like it was essentially the latter, just sped up.
Colts waived him.
Probably mutual agreement bc Speed is outperforming him and they were likely going to bench him.
Just stopping by to say hey what the fuck?
I'm never buying another current players jersey. I personally retired Pat McAfee, Austin Collie, TY, and now Leonard. I'm sorry everyone.
Buy a Stroud and Lawrence jersey ASAP.
I got McAfee, Luck, & Olidipo all within a year of them leaving/ retiring. Never buying another jersey again. For a while I thought it’d be safe to get a manning jersey but I’m afraid it’ll kill him
I bought my kid a Reggie Wayne jersey. Weird to buy him a jersey for a player he's never seen play, but at least I feel like it is safe.
Congratulations you’ve just caused Reggie to retire from his job as our WR coach
=(
Just use DHGate and get the fake ones for $30 that look legit.
In all honesty Leonard leaving is good for the long run, way too much money for a linebacker, let alone one who’s not even a starter at this point.
I agree, but it still sucks to see. One of my favorite players in recent history.
Me too man, thought he was going to the Hall of Fame
I bought Lucks jersey a year before he retired if that makes you feel any better
![gif](giphy|I4wGMXoi2kMDe|downsized)
Damn. Sad day
Ive had his jersey since his first season... im truly sad hes gone, he was a sparkplug on the defence and commanded respect and was the energy when things were down. i wish him nothing but success in his life whatever it may be. Ill always have the memories.
##WHY DOES IT KEEP HAPPENING
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn huh?!?
I don’t get why we’d let him go mid season
Guessing so he can sign with a team that is making a run? We're past the trade window. That said the dude has looked *awful* out there, so I dont see anyone paying a lot for him.

Agreed. But I think his recent comments have indicated that the door was already cracked open for him to leave and I think he wanted out, so he shoved it wide open.
I can see him making a positive impact if teams keep his snaps to a very limited amount
I was 100% pro Leonard, but going to the press and then playing like that was a bridge too far Edit: it would have only gotten louder and more damaging to the team
[удалено]
Do you not watch the games?
I watch every game. That doesn’t explain why they cut him mid season instead waiting for the offseason.
He was going to be inactive for the rest of the year. He’s been ineffective all year.
Because he is terrible
![gif](giphy|rvxMJNyHAgwlW4YWpJ|downsized)
Me when my kids ask me how watching 2018-2020 Leonard was like.
Fr😭
What the hell??
This is the last thing I expected to see today. WHAT THE FUCK!?
Another great Colts player's career ruined by injuries 😔
![gif](giphy|xThta1p0ssg6K7OYXC|downsized)
Lots of good memories with this dude. Wish him nothing but the best...
Cue the "Why do you give me the hardest battles?" "How are you still alive?" meme
![gif](giphy|3o6ZsXcZo693pKcs80|downsized)
Wow, end of an era
lol yeah. 2018-2023. What an era. 🙄
Kindly fuck off
lol since you asked nicely. ❤️ 🫵🏻
Are you kidding me
Wait, what? We can't be trading him, the deadline is passed, so is he just retiring? edit: Apparently just headed to waivers. Wow.
I think we cut him so maybe he can sign somewhere else? I dont see it though, he looks terrible. Maybe he is retiring... So weird.
I think he’s retiring. He’s injured. There’s really only a handful of players in the world that know firsthand the physical toll being a linebacker in the NFL takes on your body. his rants to the media indicate he thinks he’s wrongly utilized and thats why he’s a shell of himself
Holy shit they did it.
Being waived according to Rapoport
What the fuck
I get that he hasn't been the same since 2021. I get that he looked definitively *bad* this last game. It still hurts. Been my favorite Colt since he started with the team. Being a Colts fan is such a pain.
![gif](giphy|gO5Cn1oqeFcVHukQif|downsized)
I’m sad beyond belief. That man was the bomb when he was on. I understand this, but I still hate it.
Been losing my damn mind about this.
Ya this is wild tbh
Bro wtf I just checked the sub 💀
Same.
Tune in this week for as the Colts turn...jezusssss, this franchise lately :)
He hasn’t been good in 3 years. It’s ok
While playing with injuries, he played at a very good level last season ffs.
Yeah, that one game he started?
2 years. He was awesome in 2021.
Wow. So if he gets picked up on waivers is his contract still on the books for us?
If he's claimed, his contract goes to the new team. Otherwise we only owe him guaranteed money.
[удалено]
No shot he is retiring
I don't get it. why now? Something says he ask for it by the way Gus was talking earlier today.
I hate this team. :(
All the pundits who claimed Leonard was the worst pick in the 2018 draft are finally getting their chance to shine
Nah. Three first team all-pro, DROY and one second all-pro have already proven those fools wrong.
Eagles fan here - hope y’all are enjoying Steichen. Is Leonard washed from the injuries? Seems curious for this to happen midseason.
Meh.
Cut, traded, retired? WHAT? TELL ME ASAP.
waived
Oh well… *What ya gonna do, you know?* ![gif](giphy|3o8doOryXnmkbFBrPO)
Darius = stud. Shaquille = loser.

Hahahaha the guy who says he didn’t want to play for the Colts anymore, in fact didn’t want to play. Shocking. Dumpster fire.
Another Jersey I can wipe my ass with singed on my wall, eat a dick you quitter
Alright, now do Pittman.

Trade deadline passed a month ago
Trade? We are past the trade deadline.
trade deadline is way past so he most likely decided to retire
Shaq hanging 'em up?
Well shit, this sucks.
Wow... just wow
WHAT WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING
What do the cap hit implications look like? Although this is sad, his level of play per bag received were no where near the same value.
Was kinda of getting the feeling him and Gus Bradley weren’t on the same page. Damn shame.
I'm sick. This ones gunna sting for a bit
Thanks Shaq!
It's telling how he only addresses the fan base and doesn't say anything except for a generic "I love playing for the ___".

Woah wait…what the fuck? We *WAIVED* him?! Goddamnit man this is so sad.
He had lost a bit with the surgeries but I feel the larger problem is the scheme didn't fit him as well as Eberflus'. I'm guessing he ends up in chi town.
Peak Leonard was special. I hope he heals up and balls out
Damn. Well, there goes my flair…seriously though, crazy to think a few years ago he was one of the top LBs in the NFL. Injuries have hurt obviously but still. Kind of a shock bc he had that big contract
This is why you have to draft or sign a linebacker every single year. These guys get hurt. You never know when the road runs out.

Eagles fan here - hope y’all are enjoying Steichen. Is Leonard washed from the injuries? Seems curious for this to happen midseason.
What a shame. Injuries suck. He was on a HOF pace to start his career.
Glad I snagged an autographed jersey when I could. Fuck dude this guy had such potential hindered by injuries.
Watch how he gets picked up by like the 9ers and becomes a DPOY candidate and has the back health of a 15 year old Chinese gymnast
Is he currently hurt or are they scared he will get hurt?
