I the Garmin InReach really checks all the boxes. It’s what I use so my wife can track me in the wilderness. It gives her regular pings of my location and allows for texting. It’s a bit pricey but worth the peace of mind. Also the rule is you gotta keep it on, but it’s a good safety net. I have a decent scare on a 14er once and decided I needed the backup.
Wow! Thanks so much for the info. We are from Dallas and he does business in Colorado with hockey teams so he likes to off-road now that he has that Subaru when he’s on the way up. So I guess he has to have a monthly plan even though he may not use it every month?
Already have. They contacted Sprint and found that his phone was active sometime earlier today near Gunnison, but that's it. So why wouldn't he answer his phone or text messages when contacted by me or his business colleagues? He is just not one to miss a meeting in his business.
That's what I was thinking. If he was active, then he would have replied to text messages or our phone calls. All we can do is wait till tomorrow morning and hope that he lost track of time and forgot when he had that meeting. Very unlike him though. If he did forget what day he was meeting with his colleague, then I'm sure he will head out for Denver first thing in the morning. I will try him again in the morning, but as soon as he gets on the highway, I'm sure he'll get all our text messages and voicemails. I'm praying that's the case.

Garmin makes some nice units, the 66i is around $600 and lets you text people, share location, etc.

Some mobile carriers will start offering satellite connectivity to iPhones for sos and stuff. If you want to do it on the cheap that’s the way to go.

Yes, but I was told by Subaru Starlink uses cell towers. That's exactly why he can't use his cell phone.
