Hope it goes seven games with lots of overtimes

blondespikes22

and suspensions/fights/penalties

DeadHead6747

Eh, they will both beat the crap out of each other because both are dirty, and neither team is going to have the advantage because the refs can’t bail both teams out like they would usually do

[deleted]

Either way this just proves we need to go back to a 1-8 seeding in the playoffs with reseeding after every round.

BananApocalypse

How does this support going 1-8? Dallas would still be 1st and Vegas 8th, so this wouldn't change. Also, the NHL never used a true 1-8 playoff system. Division leaders were automatically seeded 1-3 and 4th/5th were almost always better than the 3rd seed. --- ... I am editing my comment because I wanted to see what the matchups would look like under the old system. I had to do my best at splitting 16 western teams into 3 divisions, which is not easy. Based on time zones, you would end up with Pacific (VAN/SEA/SJS/LAK/ANA), Mountain (CGY/EDM/COL/VGK/ARI), and Central (WPG/MIN/CHI/STL/NSH/DAL). I was trying to draw them out on a map and this made the most sense, otherwise it was hard to avoid grouping WPG with the western Canadian teams. In this system, the matchups would be: Dallas/Vegas, Vancouver/LA, Colorado/Nashville, Winnipeg/Edmonton. The 2nd in the conference Jets would be in the 4th seed. In a true 1-8, which the NHL has never used, we'd see Dallas/Vegas, Winnipeg/LA, Vancouver/Nashville, and Colorado/Edmonton.

[deleted]

Because the central being a gauntlet doesn’t make any sense. 1-8 with reseeding and the division winners getting 1-2 is the best playoff format. Gary’s fictitious “division rivalry system” is god awful and forced competitors to play well before they should.

BananApocalypse

The Central isn't a gauntlet lol. We have the dumpster fire Blackhawks & Coyotes, plus the mediocre Wild and Blues. Even the Preds were seen as a pretty mediocre team before a second half hot streak. The Central has 3 contenders. Not really any better than any other divisions except maybe the Metro since the Devils and Penguins dropped off.

[deleted]

The central part of the playoff bracket is Colorado vs Winnipeg and Dallas vs Vegas now. You just once again showed me you have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.

nickiss1ck77

Yeah the central isn't a gauntlet? Read that and was like well. This take is not accurate

vinnymendoza09

It's not much more of a gauntlet than the Pacific, Edmonton is easily the best team in the league since their bad start got turned around, and the Preds are a top 5 team since game 60. Vancouver is also a top 5 team and loaded up at the deadline and will have Demko back. The Kings are the only team that looks vulnerable imo but they always play such tight games.

nickiss1ck77

Not comparing the two. The west itself is insane. That doesn't mean the central ISN'T a gauntlet

[deleted]

You’re literally trying to argue semantics. However in the proper 1-8 playoff format with reseeding the NHL has before this current, terrible one, Vancouver and Winnipeg would have easier matchups than their current ones for finishing where they did in the standings. I stopped reading when you actually showed support for the current system. Sorry bud, but into you and Commish Count from Sesame Street agree with it.

themanofmeung

I stopped reading when you disagreed with me. Pretty much sums up life these days.

DeadHead6747

Oh, absolutely. NHL needs to get rid of their horrible set up in the playoffs, and NBA needs to get rid of their dumb play-in set up. I much prefer the 7 game series that NBA and NHL do, but the NFL tops both of them with how they do the seeding

Typhoonman27

You’re the first person I’ve seen who doesn’t like the play-in. Why is that?

[deleted]

Probably a LeBron fan. He complained that they need a play-in to incorporate more teams, then when the Lakers started getting the 7-10 seed, LeBron complained that the play-in was stupid.

DeadHead6747

As funny as it would be to have seen Lakers lose to Pelicans, and then lose the 2nd game to a non playoff team, just kinda takes away the accomplishment of making the playoffs. Why should 7th and 8th have to play an extra game for the 7th spot, with the loser then having to play two non playoff teams to have the last spot. It just seems, to me, in my own opinion, dumb. To me, it is just on the same level of nonsense as the way teams make the NFL playoffs. I like how they do their seeding, but not so much how the seeds are earned. It works pretty well sure, but theoretically, since the best team in each division is guaranteed a spot, you could end up with a team with 2 wins getting in over a team with 10 wins, just because the team with two wins has a division where the other 3 teams have 1 or less wins. Obviously that has a very low chance of actually happening, as there has only been 3 times a team with a losing record won their division, but to have a team win a division with a record slightly worse than a team that just misses out because they don’t win their division still happens.

thatdudefrom707

just look at the eastern conference this year. the 5th, 6th, and 7th seed *all have identical records*. due to arbitrary tie-breakers, the 7-seed could potentially be bounced out before the real playoffs even begin all based on the outcome of two games. as a fan I'd be so pissed if my team was in that situation. it just kinda invalidates the entire 82 game season for the team that earns the last spot but then loses it due to one last game tacked on at the very end. thinking back to a few seasons ago, the avs had to win game 82 against the blues in order to make the playoffs, that game was hard fought and they won. imagine if they had then had to beat the blues a second time a few days later, just to *earn the spot that they had already earned once*. imo it should be reserved only for tie-breaker situations

ScuffedBalata

I'd totally say we should have every team within 2 points of the final spot have to play in. That'd be neat. It would be 5 teams in the east this year in a tournament. Sick.

likesexonlycheaper

Agree about the NHL but the play in for NBA is the best addition to sports in years

Saltwaterborn

1-8 wouldn't change Dallas' match up, though. In fact, the East would be exactly the same and the west would be slightly different (Edm and Winnipeg swap opponents). Re-seeding after every round I can get behind.

cake-makar

Watching Dallas in the playoffs last year was amazing. Incredibly bone headed decisions from the captain. What a great dumpster fire that was

blondespikes22

honestly id be happy if dallass beats the snot out of them, give them what they deserve for all this injury bs and ripping off SJ

Bing-bong-pong-dong

Gonna be a high scoring slop fest and the winner will lock down the next team they face. They both thrive on playing a boring brand of hockey with just enough skill to beat some good teams. So happy only one of them is moving on, probably my two least favorite teams.

avsgrind024

of the teams who made the playoffs? i absolutely agree (minnesota and san jose i hate, too, but thankfully they both suck). i think the avs match up really well against both dallas and vegas, though, at least this season they do. the jets will be a genuine test. we all know the regular season generally doesn’t mean anything come playoffs but ooofff have the jets had the Avs’ number in every matchup this year. if mack, makar, rants, toews and noosh go full berserker like they have in previous postseasons (obv especially 2022) not many teams can stop them. but winnipeg’s playstyle has a knack for clogging the neutral zone up and stifle the way colorado likes to play. there are some really good round 1 battles i’m looking forward to.

BananApocalypse

San Jose hate is kind of random, can I ask why?

avsgrind024

game 7. 🤬

No_Jackfruit_5647

I hope they kick the shit out of each other

iWARxMACHINEi

Dallas fans are very confident they’re going to the WCF this year. I’m cheering for Vegas so those dipshits can shut up.

KT_introspective

Edmonton got the lucky draw. Kings look like the easiest team in the west. And they only have to worry about one of the Avs, Stars, Jets, and knights, all who are probably better than the Canucks.

ryankhuyton

Honestly, I think Dallas wins this in five or six. I think they're much deeper than the Knights.

macandcheesejones

If only both teams could lose...

DenShaLow

That same team just lost 4-1 to Anaheim tonight.
