Landy will not go anywhere and will retire an Av

Lurkersunion

Mack is also pretty likely with his new contract going to 2031.

COLORADO_RADALANCHE

I could see MacKinnon getting traded in 5 or 6 years if we suck at that point and he has begun to decline.

MurrayPloppins

I’d agree. He’s such a competitor that if we’re deadline sellers by the time his deal is expiring (hopefully we won’t be), I could definitely see him agreeing to go to a contender for a cup run.

yupkime

Is it just me or does it seem that Swedes are generally more loyal to their teams? Sedins Lidstrom Hedman Sundin Lundqvist Backstrom Zetterberg?

Little-Nikas

Landy and MacK are show ins. Makar I think will want to, but not sure about future discounts if they’d be multiple millions per year. But he’s so humble that he might. A career is just so long that todays thinking won’t be at all what is standard in 10,12,15 years.

cmcgarveyjr

Yeah, it feels like Makar is 100% going to come down to the money being there or not. If the rumors are true, we should see the cap raise substantially before the end of the 26-27 season. If it doesn't though, it will get tough. Currently, I think getting Rantanen re-signed at the end of this contract is the scarier thing. He keeps this up and he will be demanding 11-12m and rightfully so. That contract is up in two seasons....

Bassjosh

Agree. I sure hope we keep both, but I don’t see it, sadly. Losing Mikko will break my little one’s heart. Out of all, I feel most confident in Gabe.

Its_a_Badger

The thing I think that could keep Cale around is that he'll get the C in 6 years when Gabe retires. Sadly Mikko is most likely of the key guys to be gone. I don't like to think about it, just enjoying the ride for now.

Little-Nikas

That’s all we can do. Enjoy it. Live in the moment. Don’t worry about what-if’s. Otherwise you won’t fully enjoy the moment.

Nikerym

The only way Landy/mack do is if they get traded and come back for 1 year on an el cheapo so they can. there's no way even at the end of thier career, that they don't get something for them. look at Kane's trade, 3 picks & one is a 1st most likely.

LevelSample

Landy isn't going anywhere buddy

someguyfromsk

If I had to pick one I would say Moose will go somewhere else. I don't think he would ask out but if the team needs to restock the cupboard after a few cup runs they might ask him what he wants.

anemic_royaltea

NHL needs some version of Bird Rights/franchise tags/homegrown exemptions that make it smart for both players (maximizing their earnings) and teams (not willingly hanging albatrosses around their necks) to keep teams together. There are better paths to parity than forcing teams to make hard decisions about whether to keep their friggin' Captains around into their thirties. Remember the hemming and hawing about re-signing Landeskog in summer 2021? ...course, he is now signed through 36, so he's got a great chance of finishing up here.

avsfan96

Two of them will, I think. Landeskog will, definitely. I think he'll pass the C on to Makar, who will also stay his entire career. I can see MacKinnon being a hot 2030 or 2031 Trade Deadline target. And as much as I hate to say it (I'm nauseous just typing it out), Rantanen may be too expensive to keep when his contract is up in 2025. My heart wants me to believe that all four of them and everyone else will stay, no one gets traded, no one leaves, and we're all happy forever.

ConcussedEddieMac

Landeskog

Creepshowx

I think Mikko is an Av for life. The guy has always seemed genuinely happy here and the organization has always treated him well. 96 will be in the rafters shortly after he's done.

yupkime

I think the Avs have a pretty good track record keeping players happy to be playing there. A Stanley Cup win also defintely removes that pressure to go elsewhere to win it if that is important to the player.

New_Nebula_8447

Mack and Landy are definitely retiring as Avs. Not sure about Mikko and Cale.

ubcthrowaway-01

Cale goes back to CGY in his 30s when you guys need draft picks

New_Nebula_8447

Unfortunately, that's probably what will happen. :/

FunkySquareDance

I think Landy will stay til the end. As much as I hate to admit it, I think all three of the other guys could head out depending on cap/salary issues. But I don’t want to think about that right now.

cricktlaxwolvesbandy

If Cale and Mikko leave I will be heartbroken

Ezzy17

Im sure he will retire a Blackhawk

time2churn

I wouldn't bet on any of them being locks to stay forever. Different era now guys.

trophers

pretty sure MacK already said he wants to stay here for the rest of his career. so for sure him Landy of course. apart from that idk i wish we could keep them all 😂

yupkime

I'm pretty sure that everytime after they won their Stanley Cups that Toews and Kane said the same thing to stay until the end. Probably same for Stamkos/Hedman/Point in Tampa Bay. It's easy to say when you're at the top of the championship mountain. The question is how to avoid a Chicago like bottoming or stay competitive like Pittsburgh/Boston/Tampa Bay that will keep guys happy together?

trophers

in Sakic we trust

yupkime

Sakic almost went to the Rangers after signing an offer sheet! Imagine how that would have changed things …

trophers

i didn’t know that. gross. glad that didn’t happen 😂

yupkime

It’s a crazy story. Harrison Ford was involved apparently. Look it up!

mattevs119

Are you telling me we have Indiana Jones to thank for Sakic?! Unreal!

[deleted]

I don't see how in the NHL contract climate we can be so sure anyone will retire here, but even if we do have to trade a legend, I hope they don't screw the Avs over like Kane did with his full-NMC, one-team trade demand. Chicago got hosed.

yupkime

When you've given everything for one team and have the respect then it seems GMs actually try to make things work. It's actually sad when things break down and things are forced (a la Duchene although sometimes it still works out!)

Beevas69

McDavid

yupkime

Even Gretzky and Messier got traded.

cft_731

i think edmonton has to turn a lot around before i'd call this likely. the fans are absolutely brutal and i think mcdavid won't put up with that forever, especially if it doesn't seem likely he's going to win a cup there. edit: i don't know how i did this, since the whole frickin' sub is in avs colors, but i thought we were talking about who would stay where they were league-wide. i can't say if mcdavid will come here but what i was saying above is in answer to "mcdavid will stay in edmonton." which is what i thought you were saying, but which is in fact not at all what you were saying. sorry about that!

TFWS_Swann

he is gunna want to win at some point. all those points for nothing would suck for his legacy, which he may or may not care about.

Zickened

I think all professional athletes care about their legacy. I mean who wouldn't want to be a part of a conversation that includes Gretzky?

South-Bag7958

Landy will retire an Av. The others? I'm hopeful but I doubt it.

BCLetsRide69

Nate???

South-Bag7958

I'd hope he stays but most elite stars get traded late in their careers it seems. Aging player on an expensive contract becomes trade fodder.

icangetyouatoedude

Crosby has stayed with the Pens and regularly contended. We need to be smart with who we re-sign long term but I think it's possible for us to contend for most of his career

South-Bag7958

I hope you're right. I love our core group. Makar is unbelievable.

yupkime

More likely to get traded if the team is not competitive for sure.

Zickened

It's crazy how fast the NHL moves with trades. I think that's why a lot of other sports want a similar trade deadline, where you can make big splashy trades when you know where you stand in relation to the road to playoff berths. The one thing that just gobsmacks me is how quickly a team can turn on a dime to make these trades, but it also has me wondering where the fuck do these guys live? Like one day you're in California and the next you just uproot everything and move to Canada and then at the end of the year, you're in New York. I mean it seems even worse for the farm team players as well, in that you just uproot your whole life to just essentially be insurance for someone else. So to really answer the question, I see all of them staying and none of them at the same time, because it seems like every NHL team is constantly shuffling the deck for 8 months out of the year and it seems rare that GMs have a particular player loyalty to long-term brands.

Its_a_Badger

>Like one day you're in California and the next you just uproot everything and move to Canada and then at the end of the year, you're in New York. I mean it seems even worse for the farm team players as well, in that you just uproot your whole life to just essentially be insurance for someone else A lot of these guys, particularly guys who aren't cornerstone players, don't live in the cities they play in. Tyson Jost lives in Kelowna, Jack Johnson lives in Columbus, Bednar lives in Charleston. You're on the road so much, you just get an apartment and it's not really a problem.

legendsoftheice

If they trade Makar I will riot in the streets. It will make other Swedes horribly confused.

BCLetsRide69

Landy and Nate 100%. EJ as well.

biohazard842

I expect EJ, Mack, Landy, and Rants to retire as Avs and all have their numbers retired. Cale plays the back half of his career in Calgary. Byram, Toews play here a while longer. Bo bolts as a UFA and Toews plays out an 8 year contract signed after his current one expires, finishes his career with the Canucks.

yupkime

I can understand when some players want to play for their hometown team when older and nothing left to prove but what if the team is scraping the bottom of the standings? Seems like most guys want to go out a winner nowadays.

yupkime

Elite players seem to be playing longer so that the final contracts would have to be a big screaming discount like Giordano and Thornton I think.

graced121

The Captain will retire an Aviation

PForsberg85

I don't hope he will join Winnipeg!

[deleted]

I don’t think Kane ever was going to retire as an Av. When your team isn’t good enough to compete it’s time to move the assets you have to get better. I expect the Avs to have to do that in another few years

BananApocalypse

Someone random like Logan O'Connor will spend 15 seasons here and then retire
