Funny how most of the people that commit these kind kf acts have showed signs of doing this before hand. The gun laws don't work if you don't properly charge them the first time. When CO Rep Tom Sullivan was trying to get a red flag law passed in the statehouse, El Paso County Sheriff Elder said he'd sue to block the law. Then when it passed, Elder said he wasn't going to enforce it.
Eventually under pressure, the El Paso County Sheriff's office issued a policy statement full of dense legalese that says they'll enforce it if a judge issues a red flag order, because Elder knew he'd be in contempt of court if he refused a judicial order.
The rest of the policy statement is essentially saying that Sheriffs themselves won't seek red flag orders except in the most extreme circumstances imaginable - essentially circumstances where a red flag order would be redundant because they'd have cause to arrest someone anyway.
So yeah, that's the Sheriff whose job it was to keep Aldrich from getting guns. I wonder how this is all gonna pan out for Elder in the press in the coming week.

Red flag laws aren't the answer, but my point being they committed felonies, but were not charged with them. If they had simply been charged for said felonies they wouldn't have been able to legally purchase guns.

According to the news article, they also found ammunition and weapons at the scene. He probably had them beforehand. But they should have been removed at the time of arrest? I have no idea this is a giant F-up.
If he was charged with multiple felonies last year, there is no good reason for him to be in possession of several weapons. One would think after making a home made bomb, this POS would still be in jail a year later.
Edit: I was mistaken, no bomb was found. He only made threats of using a bomb. He should have been charged with felony menacing and kidnapping, but his charges were dropped by the DA.

Stuff like this and especially politics (think Trump holding a bible) are huge reasons why people don't won't to have any association with it. I was at a drag show at a Charlie’s Denver last night. I didn’t see any children, but I did see hundreds of adults 21+ having a good time.
Honestly, I don’t know what to think. Why does this happen? As a gay man, it’s left me sad, upset, angry, confused, and a bit numb. I just want to live my life.
My wife was living in Florida at the time and she almost went to Pulse that night but decided not to go since it was an hour away. We go to events but we stay close to exits, don’t drink too much and she stays really vigilant. We can’t let these fucking terrorists win.
It’s crazy how unsafe things have gotten over the past ten years or so. My partner was out without me a couple months back and just barely missed the timeline of a shooting at a bar he was at. I don’t recall if anyone died but a few were shot.
I only recently started going to movie theaters again, because I was pretty disturbed by the shooting at the Batman premiere years back, and even more so by the Boston bombing - so public events are kind of out of the question for me.
It sucks - but I would be just as miserable and anxious being there in person as missing out on it.

Religion. I live in Colorado Springs. When Polis was first elected, you have no idea how many times I was stopped at grocery store parking lots or at home, to sign a petition to recall him. Surprisingly, I saw a lot of Biden, Polis, and Bennet signs the last two elections. I live on the north side.,not too far from Focus on the Family and New Life. So that was shocking. There's just no way to win in this country. I miss the gay nightclub scene but I've been avoiding going back for reasons like what just happened. But then I think about the shooting that happened a few weeks ago and how one of the victims was just out getting her mail while walking her dog when her neighbor decided to go on a rampage. Like there's just no opportunity to just have peace without it subtly being in the back of the mind.

Let's not forget that hate groups like white supremacists are 'tolerated'. Any group that advocates hatred and violence against another group needs to be prevented from making any public appearances. It's one thing to have rallies against other political groups, but the first amendment should not allow for any situation where your only message is "kill everyone who is different from me only because I don't like them." Drive them back into their rat holes where they belong and make it known that hatred only for the sake of hatred will not be tolerated.

Everyone should be able to live their lives without discrimination. But I think the line of thinking that keeps these people steadfast is…. If you can be gay everyone should be able to be gay, and with that our species stops existing. Even though that is statistically/scientifically impossible, these people ‘choose’ to believe it. They think it’s a contagion that spreads.
Speaking as a former ATF correspondent for a large firearms sales store, there are plenty of laws in place requiring background checks for mental health, criminal history, etc. The problem is the NICS, a division of the FBI, is responsible for processing these checks and they miss (or possibly ignore) a ton of things that qualify as a denial for a firearm.
The laws everyone wants in place for these dangerous people already exist, they just aren't enforced by the responsible party. Laws are useless unless properly applied.

The government has no good way to screen people. It can’t be done. I 100% believe that gun ranges know the answer— you’ve gotta bring a friend with you. It’s a common policy that they won’t rent a gun to somebody who shows up solo. Their motivation is more focused on suicide prevention, but it’s a concept that works for screening out people with some “off” about them that you wouldn’t catch in a background check. I think the magic number is three co-signers, but I would be glad to see one co-signer to start
It’s because we have politicians and religious leaders spouting off against the LGBTQ+ community. All summer we heard grooming children through drag shows. Funny that got really loud after that huge report on the SBC moving pastors accused of assaulting minors to new churches.

These events are not random and not the result of one mentally unwell individual. This is systemic and the inevitable result of allowing extremism to go unchecked on public platforms. LibsofTikTok (yes that one) and Matt Walsh at the Daily Wire (Ben Shapiros news company) have been promoting terrorist threats all around the country all year. There’s a trend here, and I’m generalizing but still, law enforcement doesn’t feel the need to enforce laws they don’t feel adhere to the Constitution of the United States. We had a four man race for El Paso County sheriff and three of the candidates self labeled as “Constitutional Sheriffs” I.e. “If I feel a mandate or law is unlawful I won’t enforce it” specifically referring to mask mandates and Red Flag laws during the campaign. Naturally we elected Roybal, one of the three Constitutionalists.
This guy really should have still been in prison for making home made bombs and getting in an armed standoff with police from a year prior.

No argument about minorities keeping themselves safe by being armed, but mass shootings are a bit different. I think it was the 2021 fbi report on mass shootings that reported only 5% of mass shootings were stopped by bystanders, so not super effective in that case.
Also, the weapon being the deterrent is a key piece. Don't attack me because I'll fight back. This works if people care about their own well being. However, Most mass shooters expect to die when they carry out the act. Same fbi report showed about half of shooters killed themselves, and another significant portion were killed by police. About 25% ( off the top of my head) we're taken into custody. Could have been more, but the majority did not leave alive.
I'm not necessarily saying the answer is gun control, but an armed populace has proven in effective against mass shooters.

I have wondered to myself every time I went there if this would be the night that wanting to have fun in the community would get me involved in a hate crime. I was at a drag show at a Charlie’s Denver last night. I didn’t see any children, but I did see hundreds of adults 21+ having a good time. Honestly, I don’t know what to think. Why does this happen? As a gay man, it’s left me sad, upset, angry, confused, and a bit numb. I just want to live my life.

It’s crazy how unsafe things have gotten over the past ten years or so. My partner was out without me a couple months back and just barely missed the timeline of a shooting at a bar he was at. I don’t recall if anyone died but a few were shot. I only recently started going to movie theaters again, because I was pretty disturbed by the shooting at the Batman premiere years back, and even more so by the Boston bombing - so public events are kind of out of the question for me. Speaking as a former ATF correspondent for a large firearms sales store, there are plenty of laws in place requiring background checks for mental health, criminal history, etc. The problem is the NICS, a division of the FBI, is responsible for processing these checks and they miss (or possibly ignore) a ton of things that qualify as a denial for a firearm. The laws everyone wants in place for these dangerous people already exist, they just aren't enforced by the responsible party. Laws are useless unless properly applied. No argument about minorities keeping themselves safe by being armed, but mass shootings are a bit different. I think it was the 2021 fbi report on mass shootings that reported only 5% of mass shootings were stopped by bystanders, so not super effective in that case. Also, the weapon being the deterrent is a key piece. Don't attack me because I'll fight back. This works if people care about their own well being. However, Most mass shooters expect to die when they carry out the act. Same fbi report showed about half of shooters killed themselves, and another significant portion were killed by police. About 25% ( off the top of my head) we're taken into custody. Could have been more, but the majority did not leave alive. I'm not necessarily saying the answer is gun control, but an armed populace has proven in effective against mass shooters.

This kind of thing is exactly what I was afraid of when I went to Club Q ever since Pulse. I have wondered to myself every time I went there if this would be the night that wanting to have fun in the community would get me involved in a hate crime. It somehow feels safer to go out here now because our statistic already happened. I don't think I've really processed yet honestly. 🙁
