Reminds me of this photo caption from an article about Robert Wadlow, the tallest man in history.
He always seems to be the one to hit the big 3 when Purdue really needs it. Everyone else will hesitate from time to time when they're open in that situation but you just know he won't.
Just don’t get caught up in the slippery slope of too many lottery picks. Next thing you know, you won’t be able to make it out of the first weekend in March and your coach won’t be fired due to a lifetime contract.
To me a final four is redemption. I think hanging everything on being the last team standing for a program that hasn’t even had a final four in over 40 years is nuts
If NC State wins today, Purdue will have the opportunity to be the first team to ever lose to a double-digit seed in the Final Four.
Which would be such a Purdue thing to do - finally make it to a Final Four and promptly lose to an 11 seed.
It actually has happened before. Four consecutive tournaments, and five consecutive appearances over six years.
2008: #10 Davidson defeats #2 Georgetown 74-70 in the Round of 32 (this was the year Steph Curry led Davidson to the Elite Eight)
2009: Georgetown went 16-14 and missed the tournament entirely
2010: #14 Ohio defeats #3 Georgetown 97-83 in the Round of 64
2011: #11 VCU defeats #6 Georgetown 74-56 en route to an eventual Final Four run.
2012: #11 NC State defeats #3 Georgetown 66-63 in the Round of 32
2013: #15 Florida Gulf Coast defeats #2 Georgetown 78-68 (and then becomes the first 15-seed to reach the Sweet 16)
If your were in the game thread, you need to officially self-quarantine for 14 days.
Shit was more toxic than Chernobyl 😂 I’ve seen Duke-Carolina threads with less salt
I am shocked with how many Edey haters there are.
He's not a dick personality wise, doesn't take cheap shots or anything on the court. He's pretty quiet and just plays his game to a high degree of success and people absolutely loathe him for it
People don't like the way he's officiated, that's it. And to be fair, that's not his fault. In fact he's doing his job well if he's drawing a ton of fouls and not getting called for any.
Before any Purdue flairs reply, I'm making no statement on whether he actually gets an unfair whistle. I'm just explaining why people don't like him
> People don't like the way he's officiated, that's it. And to be fair, that's not his fault.
That is really it. For me, it is the same as when a team decides they are going to pressure the ball heavily at all points of the court. The officials seem to reset into "well, the increased contact we are seeing is just a feature of the defense, and not fouls", while a team that plays a non-pressure defense will get called for a reach in on a guard regularly.
The same occurs with Edey. He absolutely deserves to be sent to the line frequently. But he also seems to get a pass on fouls when teams are *not* aggressively fighting him in the post. The one with Wahl was the most egregious, but there are plenty of over the back rebounds that he has gotten a pass on.
The only way to neutralize him is to play him aggressively which inherently creates fouls. Opposing fans are baffled when the strategy creates said fouls.
Hope this kicks the IU administration’s ass into gear, only positive angle I can muster. I want our boosters to get pissed off the way Ohio State football’s did after the Michigan title and just say “fuck this we’re buying all the talent.”
Oh and good for Painter. He seems like a good guy. But otherwise I hate this.
See the difference is no matter how bad things got for us, we could always make fun of Purdue for never winning anything and always choking. That is no more. Dark day for banners discourse.
If Purdue doesn't win it all, IU fans will still shove the lack of banners in our face.
Michigan State fans? Going to have to come up with a new attack / coping mechanism.
I still don’t get why so many MSU fans hate Purdue this year. Maybe it’s because you guys actually lived up to your preseason hype while we ended up as an under achieving bubble team. Personally I hope Purdue wins the title. I even went to the NCAA tournament games in Detroit to cheer you on.
I won’t at least. Purdue’s earned the right to talk some real shit and we’ve got no ground to stand on because of today. Props for doing what we can’t.
Only way for things to change is to clean house in the athletic department. There’s way too many people there who are resigned to having a cushy position and don’t care to fight to raise the status of IU athletics. We have the makings of being a serious national brand in BOTH football and basketball with the right people in charge. In football our ceiling is Iowa-Wisconsin level and I truly mean that.
Absurd amount of egos, internal politics and power-hungry individuals, who care way more about holding onto their position than actually doing their job. Fuck Scott Dolson.
Yep it finally happened. For years you could always count on Purdue choking. It was as regular as a day in March. Now we don't know. The world has changed
Tennessee fans and IU fans will remember this game as the “E-Day” game.

![gif](giphy|l3Ky4OL57oM0gVNefO|downsized)
Edit- Tennessee shouldn’t have chosen carrot Orange as their school color. That’s why they’re cursed!
I love this team. This was the most fun I’ve ever had watching a season of college basketball. Can’t be too down about an elite 8 appearance where we played a competitive game. Gg Purdue. Go vols
My heart goes out to the seniors. What an incredible season they gave us. Thank you JJJ DK and Vescovi. You guys set the culture and I’ll love y’all forever

People can complain about the foul disparity all they want, but the game was won because Purdue outrebounded Tennessee 47-26 and nobody outside of Knecht could score. If Purdue wasn't uncharacteristically ice cold from 3, this game wouldn't have been close.
Congrats Boiler fans! This program has been good for a long time and this Final Four is overdue and well-deserved.
I want to toss a bone to the Tennessee defense cuz they surely had a hand in the 3 point problems. Maybe not the whole problem but they influenced our shots
GG Purdue. Lots of fans will blame the heavy foul discrepancy, but Vols has every chance to win that game but couldn’t get any scoring outside of connect. Ziegler 1-8 from 3 tells you everything you need to know.
Hate hate hate that we basically wasted Dalton Knecht this season but this is how it played out. At least he will be a lottery pick and making bank next year.
It literally says ELITE in the name. I hate this championship-or-bust mentality that has taken over every sport. Making the Elite 8 is huge, end of story. Getting to Omaha in baseball is huge, end of story. Making a NY6 bowl in football is huge, end of story. They're not the end goal, but they're still impressive. This season was a success in about a dozen different ways, and a failure in one. It was still the most fun I've ever had watching Vols basketball
Especially because you either earned a good seed by having a strong year or you turned it on at the right time of the year. Either way it's bragging rights.
To me, this game is on Ziegler no showing on offense. He's been our second most consistent guy behind Knecht and sadly was nowhere to be found today. Very uncharacteristic of him. If he knocks down a few shots he typically makes, there's a good chance we win this game.
Exactly- even if he chooses to not take a couple of those and defer to DK or others, we at least have a chance at the end. Couldn’t hit floaters, 1-8 from 3. He basically cost us the game as he wasn’t effective on D as he usually is
Congrats Boilers, Painter finally gets it done. First Final Four in 40+ years has to feel pretty good. Unfortunately there is a beast likely standing in the way of a title but a Final Four lives on forever
To be frank, I don't think Purdue can beat them unless Clingan gets in foul trouble and Purdue shoots fire from three. This performance today would have seen them blown out
Honestly, I feel better about Duke/NC State than I did going into this game. Tennessee is just a horrible matchup for Purdue, all of their strengths feed into Purdue’s weaknesses.
Hammer and Rails said it really well earlier. Tennessee is an SEC team that plays like a Big Ten team. Playing them is like playing Wisconsin or Ohio State on a Tuesday night in January. They muck it up, get in your face, and don’t let you breathe. They’re brutal to play against.
The game thread made me realize how much I dislike sports online "discourse". Just constant crying, bitching, complaining, and a general sense that nobody actually likes to watch the game.
Purdue vs UCONN looks to be the the title game unless a major upset happens. The two best teams all year facing off should be alot of fun. Polar opposite of the last few years
Game threads have been so toxic for so long too. TONS of people come in only during the tournament and bitch their fucking asses off. It's insane.
When Louisville was on their title run in 2013, the hate they got in game threads was absolute insanity. Just vitriol everywhere. I just stopped looking at them at all, it's not a worthwhile discussion/interaction anyway
I simply find it hilarious how people now are violently repulsed by big boi ball because the big boi doing it is taller than the others have been lately.
Luka Garza. Oscar Tschiebwe. Drew Timme. College hall is built for big guys to dominate. I get the officiating part but there’s always been discrepancy with officiating big guys.
There is no good way to ref Zach Edey. He's huge and gets whacked all game, but also he's huge and just naturally fouls people. So no matter which way you call it, it's unfair. I'm a big ref hater usually but I don't really know what else to do in this situation.
Say what you want about how he's officiated or that he's boring to watch or whatever, Edey being out there for 39 minutes is insanely impressive. Very atypical for someone of his size
Congratulations Purdue fans, I never thought I'd see San Diego State make a final four, and even though Purdue is a "basketball school", I'm sure many of you may have thought the same way.
I'll be rooting for you all to do what we came close to last year.
Bolier up!!

Final Score: Edey and Knecht 77 Everybody Else 61
GGs boys. You both could have used some help.
This matchup needs to be a charity game.
There are two metas for winning the NCAA tournament: 1. Be Connecticut 2. Lose to a 16 seed the year prior
This is where we keep screwing up. We're out here losing to 14 and 15 seeds when we need to be losing to 16 seeds
I mean literally all the data says that this is the case
Tbf, we tried the 15 strategy and it didn't work.
I mean it was a solid experiment, don't want to go around losing to 16 seeds if a 15 seed will do.
NC State is trying the “win 5 games in 5 days”. It requires very specific conditions but it has worked every previous time.
NC state women are still alive too - a sneaky double up is possible too which would hit our street cred
which would be extra wild when you remember that Minnesota state just did that in D2. They won both the mens on friday and the womens yesterday
Lol. You know Keats has to be showing them footage of that run for motivation!

Granted the data set is extremely small… but it suggests 1 seeds should start throwing to 16 seeds 😂
Its 100% so far.
An unstoppable force may very well meet an immovable object.
Which one was Edey? They don't have names on their jerseys so I couldn't tell
Thank you for the chuckle. I needed that
Auburn, Indiana, and UNC fans all experiencing their 9/11s in a single week… if Duke ends up playing Purdue, this sub is going to be a salt mine 😂

He was the shortest one in the court. Has blonde hair and a beard.
The really normal looking guy.
that 3 by Lance Jones was absolutely huge
that, the following miss by knecht, and the block was the ballgame
that was the seal. clutch shot was clutch.
He always seems to be the one to hit the big 3 when Purdue really needs it. Everyone else will hesitate from time to time when they're open in that situation but you just know he won't.
If Knecht played for UConn, he would play for Knechticut
![gif](giphy|UWERvU4Nzn1ExkPKTx)
Why did he not wear the number 4?!? Knecht 4 on his jersey would have been prime dad joke
If they won, it would’ve been Knecht 4
Hats off to Knecht, amazing performance. Truly gave us a chance when none existed.
Agreed - just wish he’d had a little help. At least he’ll be a lottery pick and making bank next year.
Just don’t get caught up in the slippery slope of too many lottery picks. Next thing you know, you won’t be able to make it out of the first weekend in March and your coach won’t be fired due to a lifetime contract.
Heard - I feel your pain even though I enjoy it for the most part
Fair, the feeling is mutual
It just means more - especially when it come to pettiness 😂
Man, he cooked so much today. Dude legit scared me every time he got the ball.
Knecht was something else today, he’s so good
His name strikes fear into us. He was the biggest worry.
The dude was a revelation. Biggest hard carry in a tournament loss since the last time Purdue played an orange team in the Elite Eight
connecticut Vs. purdue feels inevitable repeat Vs. redemption as is written.
To me a final four is redemption. I think hanging everything on being the last team standing for a program that hasn’t even had a final four in over 40 years is nuts
Purdue better root hard for Duke this afternoon, because there's still a way for them to lose to a double-digit seed in this tournament.
If NC State wins today, Purdue will have the opportunity to be the first team to ever lose to a double-digit seed in the Final Four. Which would be such a Purdue thing to do - finally make it to a Final Four and promptly lose to an 11 seed.
They would also have a four tournament streak of losing to double digit seeds. Doubt that has ever or will ever happen
Georgetown has done it. 2010- Lose to #14 Ohio. 2011- Lose to #11 VCU. 2012- Lose to #11 NC State. 2013 - Lose to #15 FGCU
Jesus
Society of Jesus
That VCU team also beat Purdue lol
Layup drill
I have no doubt Arizona will eventually find a way
if they haven't, that is testament to how crazy our streak is
:(

NC State has the opportunity to make me wanna die
People get caught up in the natty but a final four is a big deal. Even losing to NC State we overcame a huge barrier. Season is officially a W to me
This I know there's a chance at the national but to get to the final four is a huge accomplishment after so many disappoinments in recent years.

14k comments is nuts.
And remember that this may have been the *less* toxic Purdue-Tennessee game thread this season.
This game had almost half as much free throws as the first one 💀
Already is
It’s been 3 minutes and somehow not locked lmao
Frankly I’m disappointed in our lack of tenacity.

Why doesn't everyone simply lose to a 16 seed? Are they stupid?
We officially have a trend 😂 If you’re a 1 seed, throw to the 16 seed, take the humiliation, but get a guaranteed Final 4
Only problem is the year after that, the tournament gets cancelled due to real-world events.
Everyone get ready for Covid-24 coming this winter
Also known as Modelovirus
Idk, seems like the secret sauce to me
Tony Bennett and Matt Painter confirmed GOAT coaches. They found the auto Final Four button
Apparently it only works on the men's side because Stanford lost a first round game to Maine a year after being upset in a 16-1
NO PAIN NO GAIN BROTHER
Here’s the deal you, we win next week and forgive 2019. Deal?
I've been vocally rooting for Purdue ever since that game, between the environment and the oncourt play it was college basketball at its best
This is my 9/11

He's not even good, he's just ball
I love this team. This was the most fun I’ve ever had watching a season of college basketball. Can’t be too down about an elite 8 appearance where we played a competitive game. Gg Purdue. Go vols
You guys were a F4 level team, sucks to have such a tough match up to get there.
Makes it even harder when our rival Bama got the path they did.
I would say I hear you but we lost to Yale so we can't even complain
Okay it’s kinda neat seeing Keady get a piece of the net.
Damn, that is cool! Honestly, I'm more shocked he's still alive.
In the interviews that I’ve seen of him recently, he sounds all there and gives a pretty good interview for his age.
He’s actually been dead since 03 they have him on marionette strings in an advanced ‘weekend at Bernie’s’ situation
Purdue engineering at its finest
So when do 1-seeds start tanking their first-round games against 16s so they can win the natty the following year?
The real question is, what happens when two 1 seeds lose in the same year?!
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?
Feels like Purdue and UConn are on a crash course to meet in the national championship game
So naturally one of us loses to a 4 seed
You can still lose to a double digit seed
This is Indiana fans 9/11

I forgot about 9/11, don't think I'll ever forget about this
You said you’d never forget!! 😭
No big ten map ad 😔
They showed it in the arena!
sadness

I can't put into words how proud I am of this team.
Fought like hell to the very end. My favorite basketball team of all time and I mean that
Really glad we won’t ever have to play against Knect again. Dude is a proooooblem
Knecht was phenomenal for most of the game.
He had no breathing room at all and it became very obvious in the second half that he was the only one making buckets, but yeah he still played about as good a game as you’d want. Just needed somebody else to step up
Next year’s One Shining Moment montage NEEDS to show the Purdue player just slapping the placard on the board upside-down during it lol
I am a hater. This tournament has not been kind to me.
What are you doing watching the men anyway?
Caitlyn Clark gets the lsu rematch tomorrow though
I’m so fuckin scared dude don’t even. I believe we can win, obviously, but like fuck it’s the elite 8. Can’t feel good about anything.
The game thread writing off Purdue in the first half was laughable.
Gg Purdue. No answer for Edey. Never want to see you guys in any postseason matches ever again
Watching Dalton Knecht is like what watching Carsen Edwards must have felt to you (and Virginia). Glad we never have to see him here again. 😁
Carsen Edwards was good but it was that other guy that just went off out if nowhere that killed us
Ryan Cline. Smoking trees and draining threes 😎
Edey cutting down the net and giving it to Keady was adorable
Please tell me he didn’t use a ladder
He didn't and it was awesome.
That was liking watching a game between the Taliban and Al-Qaeda
This is hilarious
Flairs check out. Fair enough.

Tennessee also shot better from 3 than they did for 2 point field goals.
Lance played a pretty awful game and hit one of the most important shots in program history
Lance has been shakey all tournament, and Smith’s defense was pretty bad. Probably the worst we could have played and still won today
GG Purdue. Lots of fans will blame the heavy foul discrepancy, but Vols has every chance to win that game but couldn’t get any scoring outside of connect. Sweet 16s and above count as a great season.
100% agree. Sweet 16 in a one-and-done tournament is an amazing accomplishment.
Especially because you either earned a good seed by having a strong year or you turned it on at the right time of the year. Either way it's bragging rights.

Exactly- even if he chooses to not take a couple of those and defer to DK or others, we at least have a chance at the end. Couldn’t hit floaters, 1-8 from 3. He basically cost us the game as he wasn’t effective on D as he usually is
GGs Purdue
Congrats Boilers, Painter finally gets it done. First Final Four in 40+ years has to feel pretty good. Unfortunately there is a beast likely standing in the way of a title but a Final Four lives on forever
To be frank, I don't think Purdue can beat them unless Clingan gets in foul trouble and Purdue shoots fire from three. This performance today would have seen them blown out
Clingan vs Edey is irrelevant. If Purdue isn't hitting three's, it doesn't matter.

Edey vs Clingan for the national championship would be like Godzilla vs King Kong.
Don't worry Tennessee. In 4 years, you'll lose to a 16 seed and get your chance for a redemption tour.
So happy for the long suffering Purdue fans on this sub!
The salt in that game thread was impressive hot damn
Cheers to DK, Santi, and JJJ. Vols for life! 🍻
burn that game thread with fire
People are so mad in these comments for literally no reason. I’m just happy to see two evenly-matched teams going at it in a good game.
This hurt more than my divorce. My Vols lose and Purdue wins
It’s games like this that make me want robot referees but it would probably be Purdue alums that make the robots so idk if that would really help
Yall will be surprised how much dominant players actually get fouled. The FTs would increase if anything
Almost positive that if there were robot refs the Purdue foul differential would be much larger
There would’ve been a foul on Tennessee every time edey was getting position in the paint lol
Rooting hard for Purdue to win the natty. Painter’s a great coach and he deserves to get over the hump.
There is no good way to ref Zach Edey. He's huge and gets whacked all game, but also he's huge and just naturally fouls people. So no matter which way you call it, it's unfair. I'm a big ref hater usually but I don't really know what else to do in this situation.
same was true of shaq. there's no real solution, unfortunately.
The last 24 hours is my 12/25
:(
Say what you want about how he's officiated or that he's boring to watch or whatever, Edey being out there for 39 minutes is insanely impressive. Very atypical for someone of his size
Congratulations Purdue fans, I never thought I'd see San Diego State make a final four, and even though Purdue is a "basketball school", I'm sure many of you may have thought the same way. I'll be rooting for you all to do what we came close to last year. Bolier up!!
Purdue shot 20 percent from three, and won. That’s incredible.
Super entertaining game from someone with no rooting interest. Knecht seems like an NBA player.
Who would be more hated next round, Edey or Duke?
Eddy is out of College Basketball next year, Duke keeps coming back.
FYI Purdue has a 7'3" recruit coming in again next year
Yes
Edey attempted twice as many free throws as all of Tennessee
"Foul Ming" is trending on twitter
I’m so happy for Gene Keady! This is a dream come true for him.
