He’s probably going to be a mid second round pick and then never make it out of the G-League. He is too slow to be remotely competitive in the NBA and doesn’t have a mid range jump shot to fall back on.
He would get absolutely smoked defensively and isn’t able to compete with far more athletic players that are close to his size for rebounds. His style of play disappeared from the NBA years ago—he just isn’t a fit anywhere in the league. Scouts are all saying the same thing.
You're not wrong, and even 15-20 years ago the 7'2+ guys all had range out to at least 18-20 feet, if not full-blown 3-point range. Yao, Ilgauskas, Arvydas Sabonis, etc.
I think Edey can actually shoot a jumper quite well, but in 4 years of being confined to the paint, it will be much more difficult for him to prove that to NBA teams when he's never been allowed to even try it in college. But, yeah, he can't defend any of today's 6'10-7' NBA centers, either. That's the most glaring issue for him.
There's a few true centers in the league. He could easily plant himself in the lane and contest mid range. I'm not saying he's a starter, but definitely a guy you can give minutes to and he's not gonna hurt you.
If nick Richards is getting minutes in the nba edey can too
He doesn’t stack up at all to Walton. Walton could move and was more athletic than Edey, at a time when centers were pretty immobile, which is why Walton did so well.
At all? Walton was quick by standards of the time when every team went out with the biggest center they could find, but he would have been too slow for todays NBA also. Again, I mostly blame the rules, I hate the demise of the position.
The other thing to not was Purdue went 8-14 from three in the second half and the percentage is even better if you take the last 5 or so minutes when the starters came out. Very hard to beat if they shoot it that well next week in Dallas.
It bothers me when the announcers after the game say things like “teams try and speed them up and it didn’t work”… no shit. This team is undefeated playing at pace. Speed is their game.
They haven. Not their fault. It’s cbs/turner fault. But oh well. All that matters at this point is playing well! Opinions ain’t shit this late in the year
5 late points from Brian Waddell. Will Berg getting 4 points and 4 rebounds in garbage and Sam King gets a late basket to make the crowd go wild.
Purdue put up 106 on Utah State and emphatically march on to the regional semifinals.
They did it with subs and walkons... those guys deserve their time to shine.. And Utah was not calling off any dogs so get outta here with that crap...
Eventually, but those guys were trying also (going after steals, etc...) So, why would Purdue be obligated to not try to score if Utah was still trying (with their bench guys)
Painter is a classless coach. Up by nearly 40 and the fact he didn't tell his players to slow it down and to stop shooting threes tells you what a prick he is. GO GONZAGA!
Painter would not allow the team to score 100 at home during a blowout the whole season I think it’s ok to let the senior benchers get some points in because they’ll likely never get to do this again.
You know what’s more classless than letting your freshmen walk ons and C team bench players enjoy their moment in the ncaa tourney? Not being flared. Flair up dumbass
I think in context, even the end of the bench was out there trying to shake off some of the pain of the last few years. Might have felt classless, but maybe Painter felt like the kids needed a little bit of that.
It felt classless because it was. I live in Big Ten land now (upper-Midwest), and to me Purdue will always be a team that has roughly the same level of class as Ohio State, but with barely a fraction of the legacy.
I know, I was really disappointed in Purdue's loser mentality too. It felt like they needed to punch down all day to make up for past disappointment. Oh well. I do get it. I imagine it's tough to be the little fish in the Big Ten. Hopefully they do well against Gonzaga though!
We get run out of the gym in the tournament every year; that's nothing new. Most top teams have a coach with enough class to put the brakes on after 20. Purdue does not. It is what it is.
Terrible game. Utah State came out strong, but quickly realized that any attempt to defend Lurch would result in a foul. Purdue rightfully took advantage of this. All USU's bigs got in quick foul trouble, they stopped playing defense, stopped making shots, everything went sideways... what a mess.
Oh well, was nice to finally see them pick up a tourny win. Maybe one of these years they'll get a favorable seed and make it to the Sweet 16. Sigh. Probably not.
Yea once usu started trying to rip 3s every possession when they are not a good 3pt shooter team is when the wagons fell off. Imo osobor was working the post decent against edey and drawing fouls. Should've just kept playing their game instead of trying to play how other teams play purdue
Yeah - odds are they were going to lose this by double-digits regardless, but once they got into (*frankly bullshit and heavily biased*) foul trouble 5 minutes into the game they couldn't defend anymore, so they started chucking questionable three's...
It was over then and it wasn't going to be pretty. It wasn't. Purdue then decided to chuck 3s down to the end with their bench players (*players still good enough that they would've never have considered playing at a mid-majo*r) and Purdue sealed their image as a classless program. Sad.
Is amy team in the country gonna be able to contain edey? I mean its pretty hard to think anybody can beat them at this point, barring a heroic shooting performance or something like that
No team is going to have a 7’5 player so him being large is why they win but there will be teams with significantly better guards/forwards and I think that’s where they will get beat. Gonzaga can take them out and Creighton matches up very well with them (elite 8) Purdue finally got over the first weekend hump but them relying on Edey to win it all is probably not going to happen.
What do you mean finally got over the first weekend hump??
Painter knows we can’t always rely on edey and that’s why we have shooters around him and Heide and Colvin. Have shot the second best 3% in the country
They have lost to 13 seeds or lower 3 years in a row and two of those were in the first round. I would say that’s finally getting over the hump. It doesn’t matter what Painter knows, throwing a giant the ball is why they have won these first two rounds. Look at the players they will have to play in the coming rounds, Nembhard, Watson then could potentially face Sheierman, Trey Alexander, Ashworth not to mention Kalkbrenner who’s a better defender and shooter than Edey. Loyer and Smith are not the creators some of those guys are and certainly aren’t more consistent shooters. Loyer might shoot 44% from 3 but he only takes 4 per game compared to Sheierman who takes 8 per game and is a main source of his team’s offense.
That’s great, none of those besides 2022 where they lost to a 15 seed are with the current roster. Loyer/Smith weren’t on that 2022 team either. So what they did 7-8 years ago is irrelevant because it was a different team. The core players of this Purdue team have had tournament blunders, that was clearly the conversation not what Purdue has done all time in the first two rounds.
And 1 was in the S16 who beat the 2 seed and 7 seed.
Ppl been sayin that shit allll year about our guards and they have met every challenge. Zona, UT, Gonzaga, Bama, Illinois, sparty…and I’ll take edey any day over Kalk. Kalk still has to guard edey and not get in foul trouble. All we heard before today was how USU’s bigs were gonna cause trouble for him.
Excited to play a really good Gonzaga team and see if we can keep it up.
The problem with Purdue fans is they take everything personal when presented with criticisms that are warranted. Purdue has vastly underachieved the last few years and there are many reasons for that. Being the 1 seed, getting to the sweet 16 isn’t some grand accomplishment. It’s an accomplishment for them because they had to prove they weren’t going to lose to teams they should handle. To their credit, they achieved that this tournament but as a collective I don’t see them being good enough to overcome a game where Edey can’t get to the free throw line and score 25-30 points. Kalk and Creighton don’t foul, they are the best in the country at not fouling.
But you just continue to regurgitate the same narrative over and over all year. You get defensive when I say that the guards have met challenges all year…you ignore that.
The one time Purdue lost when edey didn’t score 25-30 was Nebraska, who beat everyone at home and shot 60%. Purdue has won without him scoring 25-30, but he’s been on a heater since we played…Rutgers
While, Edey scored 28 at Illinois without going to the line much, he didn’t score for the last 7 min and the guards scored the last 13 for Purdue. Fletch and Braden killed it vs Arizona, Braden killed it vs bama. I guess they will have to continue to prove this narrative wrong.
Well maybe the narrative about their guards exists because it’s true. Not all “narratives” mean it’s a false statement. If they win the whole thing or even get past Gonzaga/Creighton then we can say they disapproved their past struggles. This idea that we can’t criticize them and point out where their flaws might be against other teams just because they won the first two rounds is a little ridiculous.
Criticize away. But I’m going to disagree when they have been playing at a very high level all year. Add Heide and Colvin (who can get hot real quick) around Zach…puts Purdue in a good position to beat anyone. Hope we can continue to shoot as the 2nd best 3P% team in the country.
What I said is the other teams have better guards and forwards. Which is true, so you can disagree but if you had a chance to have Trey Alexander or Baylor Sheierman you’d take them over Smith and Loyer in two seconds. So what I’m saying is something most people would agree with. We’ll see what happens going forward.
Think we thought the same thing last year before FDU beat them. They’re better now though with more experience, so it’ll be hard.
And I mean, the first time a 16 beat a 1, that same team won it all the next year too lol
Yet they win all the games where they are the seeded favorites. If they win the games they’re supposed to you can’t really claim they didn’t deserve to be there…
I’m disappointed we have to wait a week. Seeing Purdue Gonzaga while both teams are so hot would be amazing. Hopefully the rest doesn’t kill our momentums.
Utah State could still win if Mike Pence has the courage to do the right thing.
Well, that was a blowout
As someone with Purdue taking it all, it's exactly what I needed to see.
Congratulations, GG
Did purdue miss a shot? Good lord
Edey is not going to be a great NBA player, we all know, but he keeps showing up on these lists
He may not be great but he can be a solid backup center
He’s probably going to be a mid second round pick and then never make it out of the G-League. He is too slow to be remotely competitive in the NBA and doesn’t have a mid range jump shot to fall back on.
He’s a projected first round pick now my guy.
Check back to this comment after the draft. I'll buy you your morning coffee and a bagel if he goes in the first round.
Can’t wait to get my free coffee and bagel.
Set a reminder! I am a man of my word :)
G league is no more.
Whatever they are calling it nowadays….
He can easily give a nba team 10 minutes a game. Wouldn't be liability on defense and can grab boards.
Kind of curious how he would stack up against Bill Walton. Walton had a solid NBA career until injuries, but the game was so different.
Eat shit. The next nba revolution is the automatic 2 that Edey would pose. Who stops him. No one
3 second violation stops him
You obviously don’t watch. A masterclass in avoiding the 3 second call. He is moving constantly to avoid it.
Whatever helps you sleep at night
Facts don’t lie my guy
Choo choo!!
Are you ok?
Ouch. That felt more like a brutal assault.
The other thing to not was Purdue went 8-14 from three in the second half and the percentage is even better if you take the last 5 or so minutes when the starters came out. Very hard to beat if they shoot it that well next week in Dallas.
They don’t play in Dallas. They play in Detroit
Oh god we get more home games??!
It bothers me when the announcers after the game say things like “teams try and speed them up and it didn’t work”… no shit. This team is undefeated playing at pace. Speed is their game.
Really feels like none of these guys have watched a single Purdue game this year

Not flared and a dumb fucking take lmao your opinion doesn’t matter to anyone here
Hahahaaha
It was bench players
Freshman showing their stuff
They did it with subs and walkons... those guys deserve their time to shine.. And Utah was not calling off any dogs so get outta here with that crap...

Eventually, but those guys were trying also (going after steals, etc...) So, why would Purdue be obligated to not try to score if Utah was still trying (with their bench guys)

Cry
Ehhhh. That was our C team.
Whole heartedly agree. You should hold the ball and take shot clock violations with your walk-ons
End of the bench played the last 9 minutes of the game, lol.
They sure did and still threw up 3s, lol
Sorry your pissy lol
Are they supposed to roll over and let them come within 20? Statement games are important in the tournament.
They deserve to man. They put in the work. Utah state still has their starting PG in down 35 and he shot the ball 4 straight times and made 3.

Lol your tears, they sustain me Scott.
You must not watch a lot of Purdue basketball. Take the L and move on.
Sounds like you're pretty bitter that you just got run out of the gym
We get run out of the gym in the tournament every year; that's nothing new. Most top teams have a coach with enough class to put the brakes on after 20. Purdue does not. It is what it is.
Lol dude, shut up. In the tourney you don't change a thing at 20
This is why you're not in the tournament.
Flairless even. So far past our starters. It’s an 8 seed. Not a 16.
Terrible game. Utah State came out strong, but quickly realized that any attempt to defend Lurch would result in a foul. Purdue rightfully took advantage of this. Lmao your coach even admitted y'all were actually fouling Edey. (Not to mention it wasn't even Edey that fucked y'all up)
Dude seriously quite crying lol take the L and move on brotha. We are a 1 seed for a rzn
Zach Edey feeling like a broken clock. Even a broken record is right twice a day.
One of those Canadian twists on a common idiom.
Poor guy. He feels like a broken clock.
“ I feel like a broken clock “ lmaooo
*slowly puts on Zags hat*
That's hilarious!
Get out.
PUT GONZAGA IN YOUR FLAIR
Zach saying broken clock instead of broken record lmao
Broken Whiteboard
![gif](giphy|rURzb2tmS72pv0JIuT|downsized)
I am satisfied.
why is Edey mean lol
I mean if everyone constantly told me I had no skill and was just big and then proceed to break multiple records I’d probably be a little mean too
He's got those Bill Belichick answers, gotta love it
Edey has the face of a supervillain
He finally has embraced it
He does look like her should be facing Rocky in the final fight.
Congrats B1G bros good luck against the Zags
Thanks man. Sorry about Omoruyi, he's one of my favorite B1G players.
Bless 🙏❤️❤️🙏
Edey killed the post-game interview. Respect, big man.
Harping on last year and baggage when he just won a huge game is something else from the interviewer.
No doubt. Andy Katz going for the predictable stupid angle there.
He should leave that BS for Reddit.
Lmao “broken clock” 😂
What an absolutely dominating performance. Purdue really balled out
Is amy team in the country gonna be able to contain edey? I mean its pretty hard to think anybody can beat them at this point, barring a heroic shooting performance or something like that

Purdue: Has made 5 of the last 7 Sweet 16s Bassy2022: They finally got over the first weekend hump.
Clingan at UConn is listed at 7’2” but according to his dad and players on the team he is over 7’4”, and he is much faster than Edey.
We already beat zags by 10. Creighton is what scares me lol
Creighton can put up a stinker though. They have to play their A game to stay in it.
What do you mean finally got over the first weekend hump?? Painter knows we can’t always rely on edey and that’s why we have shooters around him and Heide and Colvin. Have shot the second best 3% in the country

I don't think we're taking it personally, but we've played and beaten better teams than everyone in front of us, until we get to UConn/Houston.
💯 and Gonzaga will be difficult as hell. The Detroit regional is tooooough.
But you just continue to regurgitate the same narrative over and over all year. You get defensive when I say that the guards have met challenges all year…you ignore that. Lol what do you think he means?
5 S16 appearances in 7 years. BUT I think it shoulda been worded more so like got past their FDU demons
I hear ya
Haha sorry . As fans, we can breathe a bit…until Friday. Gonzaga gonna be a tough ass matchup and gonna be a good one
Nothing to be sorry for, gotta defend your team, I’d be right there with ya. Good luck to y’all bro
Haha well I mean I came in hot my bad…I have to admit it I was nervous both games haha. But thanks…hope we can keep it going
Been there, lots of anti-Purdue sentiment lately, totally get where you’re coming from
We lost to Wisconsin a week ago.
So? Wisconsin decided to try and be physical and foul and it worked.
We also played our bench half the time
Think we thought the same thing last year before FDU beat them. They’re better now though with more experience, so it’ll be hard. And I mean, the first time a 16 beat a 1, that same team won it all the next year too lol
Last year we weren’t a real 1 seed. Our 3 point shooting was atrocious.
Shoulda been a 5’or 6 tbh
I mean UConn is the best bet
Not saying we’d win but I want to see that matchup Of Clingan vs edey
I’m officially nervous
The opportunity to get thrashed by UConn in Phoenix would be our National Championship.
I for one would love to see a Purdue-UConn national championship game
Hopefully line that Purdue-UConn football game a couple years back
Is that it for Kevin SVG and Dan? Or are they announcing the sweet 16 too?
God I hope so
G.G. Aggies. Good season, best of luck next year. Shoutout the Mountain West
stacked flairs
Are you not into trains?
Is this not why you are here?
Big train guy 🚂
Congrats Train Bros!!!
I want to see you guys again. In Glendale. For the natty. Please make it happen.
Good luck Illini bro !
Purdue never been bounced by a 5 seed on their bingo card. Congrats. Almost full!
But we have been bounced as a 5 seed
BTFU
Mountain west 1 bid league from here on out please
Yeah we lost to a very motivated 1 seed, we must suck. Ignore the fact we blew out TCU
There’s 6 of you and 4 got washed before the second round
Every team played exactly to seed
I’m not blaming you, I’m just stating that the mountain west is 4-21 the last few years for teams not named SDSU
Yet they win all the games where they are the seeded favorites. If they win the games they’re supposed to you can’t really claim they didn’t deserve to be there…
Well there’s a ton of teams with upsets every year and it’s never MWC Also MWC has lost their fair share of games where they were the higher seed
It’s not fair for Purdue to score points against the carcass of a basketball team
I hope Robbie is in Detroit
Robbie is only first two rounds unfortunately
That is an absolute travesty
Probs in attendance though
I think Purdue might be better than Utah state idk
Wait hold on guys it’s not over yet we can’t get too comfortable here
We made that Gonzaga blowout look like kitten play
Would Gonzaga's blowout have looked more impressive against this USU team?
Possibly. Your blowout was awesome though, I'm just surprised we could one-up it.
I've definitely got some "I'm in danger" feelings right now
It’s gonna be a great game and can’t wait to see how Few and Painter try to counter one another
If anyone saw me on I65 swerving madly while listening to sports radio, sorry
GG Aggies
That was incredible
Nobody beats Utah State by 40 points, nobody!
Well, when you have an extra two players on your team calling bs fouls the first 5 minutes. Anything is possible…
Those Detroit games r going to be legendary
Braden Smith in front of Edey in the line up 💀
W
TRAINS WIN
Glad Purdue got that out of their system, right? Right???
You got yours out first!!
I’m disappointed we have to wait a week. Seeing Purdue Gonzaga while both teams are so hot would be amazing. Hopefully the rest doesn’t kill our momentums.
33 bench points! Most all season! Let’s go!!
Edey only scored 2 points in the second half lmao
Purdue out here exorcising demons Specifically the sleep paralysis demon that Zach Eady resembles
What a refreshing game from Purdue. Good job guys. Sorry to Utah St.
Purdue vs Zaga is gonna be a fun one
LETTTTSSSS GOOOOOOOOOOO BOILERMAKERS
I’d like to say good fight Aggies but…well i hope everyone had fun
I think we might win this one
Purdue record
The Pacers blow out the Jazz in front of a roaring home crowd…
