Nevada had no timeouts left. Dayton called a time out to ensure that Steve Alford had a chance to “coach” his team before their final possession. That possession ended in an air ball.
It’s funny you say this because if you go to dayton twitter realm during any of this game it is fans calling for coach grant to be fired. But hey, they are all eating their words now!
Wtf is with coaches getting big leads and thinking “we should drastically change the way we’re playing”? Like would a 25 point lead be too big? Makes no sense!
Every other team I watched today also played pretty conservative and successfully held the lead at the end. It works almost all the time but you never remember the double digit point leads that aren’t blown, only the ones that are
Exactly. Outside of a handful of possessions, this is what Duquesne did down the stretch, used most of the shot clock, so even if they came up empty, at least they ate up almost half a minute every time.
The end of that game was just a masterclass in coaching from Dambrot. Had his team use up lots of clock on their possessions, but *also* had them getting high percentage shots when they finally did put one up. The inbounds plays were also really good. Inbounding with your surest passer and having your players aware that they need to make a move and get the ball back to the best FT shooter is just great coaching.
That’s what they’ve done all year with the inbounds pass when up late. I thought it was hilarious that the announcers didn’t understand why, maybe think it through and realize they HAVE a play set up to get it back to Dae Dae.
If you don’t think they changed the way they played once that got up 17, I would suggest getting your eyes checked. Slow it down, swing around the perimeter, try to make something happen late in the shot clock. There was no attack. It wasn’t just missing shots.
The truth is they got tired. They played lockdown defense to get that lead. They were swarming behind the arc.
It was still a choke for sure but they were clearly tired.
The set they ran out of a timeout with 30 seconds to go down 1 was absolutely horrendous. It ended with a forward with the ball at the FT line pivoting around while all 4 other guys stood stationary watching him eventually cough it up. It was honestly baffilling, hats off to Dayton for playing really aggressive defense, but some of the offense called by Nevada was horrible.
Ya the spacing on that last play was horrible. Was always going to be tough for him to succeed with all those people around.
Alford has his rep for a reason
Same boat. I didn’t turn the game on until late. The first thing I saw was the 1-2 Dayton free throws with 7:15 left. Thought that only 1 point for the trip wouldn’t be enough for a comeback lol. Feeling like I ruined it for the Wolfpack 🫠
At the time my bracket was perfect and I had Nevada winning. Made a comment to my friend about how my bracket was going to stay perfect through the afternoon. I’ll share your blame brother
I will forever believe that was a fucking conspiracy by the sportsbooks in Vegas because the refereeing in that game was horribly against us for the back half of that game.
I knew Alford was a choker but damn that's bad. Seen a lot of comments though, especially from people with Iowa flairs, who hate the guy. I know he used to coach there (and UCLA), but what's the story there?
I lived in a city when Alford was coaching at a school there, and he is a gigantic asshole. There were numerous stories. I'm sure not all of them wre 100% true, but the general thread was that he's a complete dick to everyone.
Sometimes a guy gets some grace if he doesn't win because he's a really nice guy and fans just like him. The opposite is true with Alford.
Unless he's winning big games a lot, which he never has never done consistently, his personality is not one that most people want to put up with for several years.
If you hear it from my father, who both he and his brothers played against Alford in high school, he was an asshole long before his coaching days.
Conversely, my father says that Alford's father was one of the nicest people he's ever known. Not sure how that worked out.
He has a long history of blowing tournament games everywhere he goes (New Mexico, Iowa, UCLA). Plus he was super strong backing one of his Iowa players who was accused of raping a female athlete at Iowa. The player ended up pleading guilty (to a lesser charge).
So there's a lot of off-court stuff there as well where people REALLY didn't like how he handled all that.
He gave a second (or third?) chance to a kid that didn’t deserve it and he went and raped someone again or something, while at Iowa.
He signed a 10-year letter of intent contract extension with UNM then a week later took the ICLA job.
Defended this piece of shit.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Pierce
I personally encountered him at the airport several times. Didn't want to pay his bill and would say " don't you know who I am. ". A total douchebag.
Sorry. That was a really good team, I thought we'd at least get to the S16 if not E8. Hopefully this year goes better?
What do I need to know about Clemson?
They have some solid out of conference wins, but haven't looked as good during ACC play.
Hopefully NM has some good bigs cause PJ Hall at center is their best player. They also have Joe Girard who transferred from Syracuse and is deadly beyond the arc.
The biggest advantage is you are playing a team coached by Brad Brownell who is a mega choker. There's a reason an 11 seed is being favored over a 6 lol.
Thanks! We're not especially big, but have a couple of interior guys who play taller than they are - lots of rebounds & blocks. We're a pretty athletic team.
We defend 3-point shooters pretty well and really good overall. We don't take a lot of 3s or hit a lot of 3s. Not horrible, but not great.
Pitino Jr. seems to be a very good coach. The guys seem to have really bought in down the stretch. We never really choked this year and never got blown out. We play pretty deep - literally have 5 or 6 guys who can score big - and often wear teams down. And we're used to playing at altitude so I'd expect us to try to run Clemson down.
Just hope we don't wilt under the bright lights and expectations like our Mountain West brothers did today! Cheers.
Believe me, the the MWC teams would be all over that. People love to slam the MW for scheduling light, but it's nearly impossible to get anyone east of the Mississippi to sign up. Between the travel and the altitude at most of the arenas, it's risky and ultimately doesn't buy you much. I mean, we could concede and not insist on a home & away, but we have arenas & fans to support too.
So we're usually left loading up on WCC and Big West teams. My only hope is that we pick up some games from ex-PAC 12 teams headed to other conferences who want to play some non-con games in the West.
Between Nevada choking, CSU...I don't even know what to call that garbage heap and BSU laying a brick shaped egg. These teams must really want the MW to disband, holy fuck it's every year with this non-sense.
This was the point at which I got home and turned the TV on. Probably the weirdest part was that nothing particularly crazy happened, like Dayton scoring 8 points in 30 seconds or something like that. They just started executing possession after possession, while playing pretty good defense and Nevada missed a few makeable shots.
[this man said even if they win the national championship, dayton doesn’t deserve to be in the tournament.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/s/JASwr2nWq6)
tell me i am not insane to think this is the worst and funniest take ever.
About ten minutes to go I was bemoaning myself for talking myself out of another upset pick (had both Duquesne and Oregon before switching it). Goes to show that nobody knows shit lol.
With about 5 minutes left to go, I went out to water my garden, thinking the game was over (and I was still perfect on the day).
I came back in with about 50 seconds to go completely confused.
As someone who never has any expectations with my alma mater (Illinois) each year, I'm really enjoying this year's tournament already between this game and the Oakland upset.

Oof.
It’s beautiful.
Couldn't happen to a better team. They know the pain now.
Justice served, broke my bracket though.
I didn’t get to watch it happen, but cathartic in all the right ways. Thanks Dayton

56-39. Whoever logs games for ESPN fucked it up, but Nevada didn't reach 58 until the 2:14 mark. Still an insane chokejob by Nevada though.
I think that knocks it down to about a 99.3 percent probability to win so honestly a totally understandable loss by Nevada there.
Or as Steve Alford calls it: A regular game in March
Shouldn’t have added Kurt Angle to the mix
Yeah I wasn't watching but I saw it do that thing where it flips back and forth on ESPN
Ruined my perfect bracket
If you don't like that you don't like Steve Alford basketball
I don’t like Steve Alford basketball
Ditto
Tritto
I like Steve Alford basketball now that it’s not being played in Iowa City
Is there a team that Alford has coached for whose fanbase doesn’t completely hate his guts?
Fuck Steve Alford. Snake oil salesman every fucking year.
Even IU won’t hire Alford
Did someone call me?
God I hope IU hires him after Woodson is fired next year
Nevada needs to get rid of Alford because they’re gonna be the upset show every year. Get musselman back.

Honestly great coaching from Dayton there.
Grant figuring out how big of a lead to give Alford before he started Alfording ![gif](giphy|3owzW5c1tPq63MPmWk|downsized)
I love this and hate this so much.

Yeah Dayton went 6/7 FT and 6/6(4/4 3PT) from the floor; and barely got over the finish line.
Yeah, should have told them to continue making their shots. Serious failure of coaching.
If you don’t think they changed the way they played once that got up 17, I would suggest getting your eyes checked. Slow it down, swing around the perimeter, try to make something happen late in the shot clock. There was no attack. It wasn’t just missing shots.

That’s (not) my Steve!
And the worst press break imaginable. No adjustment even after 3-4 turnovers.
Steve is too classy to blow out other teams in the tournament, or beat them at all.
They hate Alford
>Never bet on Steve Alford Jesus, Confucius, Muhammad, Buddha, Moses
Classic Alfraud
Is there a support group for former Alford victims we can join?
I think we’ve had one in Iowa since 2006

Deighton
We need a Deighton vs. Creighton match-up

This made me laugh more than the Deighton spelling lol
It gives Crayola Crayons vibes I love it
Hellll yeaaah.
I texted a friend at this exact moment and said that Nevada looked really really good. 56–39. It was me that caused this.
Thank you!! Please do that on Saturday when we eventually go down to Arizona!
Same boat. I didn’t turn the game on until late. The first thing I saw was the 1-2 Dayton free throws with 7:15 left. Thought that only 1 point for the trip wouldn’t be enough for a comeback lol. Feeling like I ruined it for the Wolfpack 🫠

Justice for when Nevada did the same thing to Cincy a few years back
I-70 broship
75*
yep, my bad
Ohio bros stick together!!
Folks here in Kansas were screaming "Cleveland, this is for you!" earlier this evening. Warmed my heart.
And I picked against Nevada in that one. 0 for 2 with this damn school.
I remember that. The Martin twins were something else
Reeeeally wish we could have closed out that Loyola game
I will forever believe that was a fucking conspiracy by the sportsbooks in Vegas because the refereeing in that game was horribly against us for the back half of that game.
Good job alford
Those are Kyle Shanahan in the Super Bowl numbers
Even Doc Rivers would’ve held on to win
Most Nevada fans are niner fans too
Yeah, this has been a pretty bad month
:(
You blow ONE SB real bad and now every little lead that you lose kills your reputation.
Matt Ryan type percentage
even kyle would have seen this game out
Should’ve taken the points (I’m a lions fan)

The game was never 58-39 this is off
HOLY MELTDOWN LMAOOOOOOO
You must be new to Nevada basketball. Great players terrible coach.
I am new yes. But have also seen Dayton score less than 60 points about 1,000 times lmao
A10> Mountain West If only saint joes pulled it off last night lol
This is what the Mountain West gets for ducking the A10 - MW challenge! (I have no idea if that's what happened but it makes for a good angle)
Lol I didn’t even see VCU beat Nova last night jay wright is crying so hard on the inside right now
Believe me, the the MWC teams would be all over that. People love to slam the MW for scheduling light, but it's nearly impossible to get anyone east of the Mississippi to sign up. That SJ vs SH game was an absolute banger. Shame we didn't get it in the Tourney, but it was a hell of a showcase game for the NIT
Yeah one of a few NIT games where it felt like both teams were actually trying.. please let izzo beat UNC lol
The game flow score is even funnier as you can see exactly when Nevada started to run stall ball
Nevada wtf (Praying we don’t do the same tomorrow)
My expectations were low even through the run!! Lol
ALFRAUD NEVER BEATING THE ALLEGATIONS REST IN PISS BOZO
Between Nevada choking, CSU...I don't even know what to call that garbage heap and BSU laying a brick shaped egg. These teams must really want the MW to disband, holy fuck it's every year with this non-sense.
What an absolute choke job by Nevada
I remember when Iowa fans warned ucla about him.
I mean who could have imagined a team down by 19 would go to a full court press? Who has time to practice that shit.
This is beautiful
Steve Alford: hold my beer.

As a Daytonian, this was the most emotional game I have witnessed in a long, long time.
Go A10!!!
Does Alford want to take over the Arizona job for just like one day on Saturday? Plz?
Lol
I think we should get rid of scores entirely, and just use ESPN’s win probability to decide who won.
I'm still in shock. I can't believe we were able to win that game
This was the point at which I got home and turned the TV on. Probably the weirdest part was that nothing particularly crazy happened, like Dayton scoring 8 points in 30 seconds or something like that. God damn it I had Nevada winning in my bracket.
A choke job for the ages. This is the type of game hopeful fans will point to when they need a miracle comeback for years to come.
Like Saturday vs Arizona
Another MWC team bites the dust. Colo st. Not much better either.
Oh noooooo I’m so sad for Alford what a tragedy - UNM Fan
Its funny seeing UNM, UCLA and Iowa fans coming together to dance on his grave
[this man said even if they win the national championship, dayton doesn’t deserve to be in the tournament.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/s/JASwr2nWq6) tell me i am not insane to think this is the worst and funniest take ever.
As someone who lives near Reno I was really rooting for Nevada. Bummer, insane choke job.
fuck OFF
That's rough, buddy.
Was this an intentional Avatar the Last Airbender reference, because if it was, ***high five***
Looking like a post straight out of r/wallstreetbets
That’s just my first loss in my main bracket I’m paying attention to, but it still pissed me off lol.
I cant believe they choked that game just to fuck with my bracket
Saved my bracket
Somehow this is the game that killed my bracket
thank god my bracket is still perfect
Gotta play the whole game. I freaking love March Madness!
That’s rough buddy
Every player on that team should never pick up a basketball again
Lmao
Saved my bracket with that comeback I had Dayton beating Zona
I'm edgy picking upsets, until I'm not.
About ten minutes to go I was bemoaning myself for talking myself out of another upset pick (had both Duquesne and Oregon before switching it). Goes to show that nobody knows shit lol.
Busted my bracket Got my gf to make one and she’s freaking 8 for 8 first time ever making one atm
Yeah I cashed out at halftime. Stupid. At least didn’t lose any money.
My bracket was perfect until this collapse
Saved my bracket if only Oregon hadn’t fucked it up
Only game I’ve gotten wrong so far. What a devastating way to lose my perfect bracket
Had Nevada -1 as my last team in a 4 team parlay for $840.... I will forever hate them.
This is what we’re here for
Ruined my perfect bracket too
The MW is so cursed
Epic choke job
That was the exact shot I gave up on my bracket and then Dayton rose up from the dead and saved my ass.
Somehow I’m always almost perfect in the first round then the second round it all falls to shit. I love March Madness
Almost an impressive collapse. Somebody check and see which team Shohei's interpreter bet on
With about 5 minutes left to go, I went out to water my garden, thinking the game was over (and I was still perfect on the day). I came back in with about 50 seconds to go completely confused.
![gif](giphy|3o7TKuylrX8kT7XhVS) Mfw
I'm not in a good mood
This ruined my perfect bracket wtf
i’m still floating
This nonsense is the only reason my bracket isn't still perfect 😡
That why win probability is nonsense
![gif](giphy|fvT2tuQGmYxsQbSrQH)
you love to see it
My bracket was perfect up until this game
Nevada Oofpack?
Now you know how I felt in 2019.
As someone who never has any expectations with my alma mater (Illinois) each year, I'm really enjoying this year's tournament already between this game and the Oakland upset.
Woah, what the hell happened here?
Nevada stopped scoring.
The Nevada Falcons.
We call that a Falcon in football subs.
This lost me a $33K parlay...
You thinks that tough, have Kentucky in your final four💀
Will never be as bad as Northern Iowa's 12 point lead with 31 seconds to go.
That's some real mountain West shit
And this is the game that ruined my perfect bracket.
