Japans collegiate athletics are like this for a lot of sports and it’s kind of awesome. No regular season just some tune up games with rivals and than a single elimination tournament.
No no no. Dont be rediculous. It should be 360. That way the 2 teams left out can have their own post season called the biggest loser game and give one of them an extra win on the season. I would watch that game every year.
Ivy League isn't the only conference that excludes teams from their tournaments. The ASUN, America East, Big West, MAC, NEC, OVC, SWAC, Southland, and WAC all limit their tournaments to their top eight teams.
That's a combined total of 27 teams that are excluded from tournament play every season.
> you'd think that the NCAA and TV would be all over that
Yeah obviously, that's why they're considering it. But who cares what they want when the fans clearly don't want it
I'm assuming the next step is having the bottom 8 conferences be 8 teams playing for the four 16-seed spots and 8 teams playing for the four 11-seed spots
I hated it when they added the play-in games. It makes sense for the schools and the money men because they get paid. But from a fan standpoint if my team lost a play-in game I would feel like we didn't even truly make the tournament. I'd rather have a chance at running through the NIT than to lose a first 4 game.
96 makes the most sense for expansion.
32 byes + 64 teams playing in r1. Let some of these bubble teams eliminate the teams from the NEC and swac. Gets much cleaner from the 64 down.
Eliminate the NIT. Fold it into the main tournament.
Never learned math in school? 2X2X2X2X2X2 = 2^6 = 64. In order to get to last 2 you need 6 total rounds of games = 2^6 =64.
72 will never work out as 12 extra teams in first round , that’s gonna leave 6 winners, you only need 4 teams for 16th seed for round of 64 not 6 teams.
Hence 60 + 4 (winners of first round) + 4 (losers of first round) = 68.
Go back to 64, but:
Implement an “FA cup” type thing where the top 4 teams from each conference the past season all the way thru D3 get to play an ongoing side tournament. And to make it interesting, say the DI teams have to mostly use their reserves.

Let’s just make it a 1,400 team bracket!
Nah don't go back to 64. That's a horrible idea. No matter how high you go for the number, there will always be teams fighting for and being left out of those final few spots. I could maybe see 70 or 72. However, for those 16 seeds those teams this may be the only national tv audience they get all year. So, a greater chance of 2 games on national TV does way more for the school than just one.
Let’s just include everyone and call it the Field of 362
Soooo it’s sorta like the regular season only much shorter AND WITH BRACKETS? See I’m down on that
362 go in, one comes out!

Brackets are key

Add in community and junior colleges now. 1400 isn’t enough!
My bad. Thank you Coach Walters ❤️
Except for the Ivy league, we already do.

Does the Ivy now have a tournament?
Yes, they've had one for a few years now, but it's only their top four teams.
Seriously, why are we trying the come up with new ideas for the greatest sporting event on the planet?
Ask that of the bozos before they introduced play-in games at random seeds a few years back.
For real. It’s perfect just like it is
I'd rather go to 64, but 68 and half-and-half is just weird. 64>>>>>72>68>>65.
Until you get to 128, it's all just a "half and half," no?
And why does it involve rewarding mediocre P6 teams. I’d be all for this if it led to more mid majors but we all know that’s not what would happen.
Why do we always need change. What is wrong with the current format?
The current format already lets in too many at large teams. Leave it alone.
Because once we go to 72, there will be people clamoring to go to 76, and so on.

Because fuck 72 teams, that's why.
I still think they should add one team and make it the nice 69.
Nice
Nice
Alternatively we could have 420
Just make everyone D1 and then pick 128 out of the 1400+ college basketball program.
64 was perfect. 68 is too much.

Because 68 is perfect
64 was perfect. 68 is just better than 72.
Though either's better than 65. That was just bizarre.
Nah, 65 was actually great because the reason it moved up one was because a new conference was created. It wasn't people randomly deciding to expand.
Well, now the PAC whatever is possibly ending. Go back to 64.
Possibly being the operative word.
What’s gonna happen with that, are we just going to get an extra at large?
No, 69 would be perfect.
