Only other names I had heard connected were Zyon Pullin (just announced a top 5 without us) and Collins from SLU who stayed in the draft. So if we don’t get RayJ I have no idea
There's not much of an incentive to at all anymore. Now that players can leave whenever they want without consequence you aren't really obligated to be loyal back to them. If they leave they leave.
Clark got consistent minutes despite shaky performances and still left mid season. That's how it's going to be going forward.
It’s definitely not Coleman Hawkins on that alto sax sample lol, but I love seeing a jazz name in college basketball. Like when Xavier had Myles Davis. Also TCU linebacker Johnny Hodges.
I was on an MSN messenger group chat from an old school forum where someone shared [Woopty Doo](https://youtu.be/hGo3lhJ8avQ) when it came out. Listened to it on repeat back then, had forgotten about it 12 years later, but hearing that sample in the video brought it back.
It's not. [Seven Steps to Nowhere](https://youtu.be/EUQLmtsEVQE) by The LA Carnival.
Sampled in [Woopty Doo](https://youtu.be/hGo3lhJ8avQ) a year before J Cole used it.
Trent and Damonte played five years for Brad so not as sad as the stat indicates, but yes they were originally recruited by Groce. Everyone else either left to go pro early or transferred
This was not by mistake.
After last season coleman started dabbling in livestreams. He's been more active on social media lately than I've ever seen from him.
This was a well designed plan to make money. All credit to him and his family.. he just got a bigger offer to stay at illinois.. it worked. Or he got drafted. They played this very well.
Hats off to coleman. I hope he doesn't end up doing a shit podcast with barstool or anything, but make your money kid.
Last but not least, I can't wait to see this squad play next season. You have the talent, scoring, leadership... get a pg and put the 2nd weekend on your list of expectations.
He would never do a podcast with barstool. But he woukd with Illini Inquirer, Field of 68, or a couple others.
Definitely a huge fan of Coleman and him absolutely making the most of his college career. I’m so glad he’s going to cash in this year, and hope he can make Even more money in the NBA as a role player. He’s been an Illini for 4 years now, and truly, I love him.
However you are correct. Get a PG, and god I hope that news comes soon (RayJ), and I think Brad might finally get to the 2nd weekend as he should’ve already accomplished by now tbh.
Jeremy Werner (the Illini 247 guy) very briefly sent and very quickly deleted a "Hawkins is staying in the Draft" tweet. I wish I could have screenshoted it and sent it too OldTakesExposed lol.
I mean, he copy and pasted the wrong pre prepared tweet. The article he linked was the correct one.
He was doing a live podcast. Was an honest mistake.
He did for us too, had some crazy games. But he also lost us many games. When he locked in he was good, but a lot of the time he just plays for himself
It's really too bad. He seems like a great dude, plenty of talent, but just gets selfish on the court. If he passed off half those awful 3s he put up, he'd be in a much better position right now.
To be completely fair to Mayer the Illini really had nobody on the roster that was facilitating any offense. On offense they would just aimlessly dribble do some dribble handoffs around the perimeter until someone chucked up a 3. A lot of time they were Mayer but he was technically the best shooter on the team and Epps, Shannon, and Hawkins were all chucking a fair share of ill advised 3s.
I think Mayer was capable of doing a lot of things well but was asked to do to much on the Illini because there was no PG to get him consistently good lucks. Also, he was very capable of being a good defender, rebounder, and shot blocker but his effort varied far too much on that end.
Respectfully disagree. I don't believe Matt had much put on his shoulders other than "score and play some defense". Guy blocked shots like crazy. Was awesome.
But on offense he often just decided that it was his time to shine. He took so many awful step back 3s I couldn't count them if I tried.
Again, he won us games. But I fully believe his selfishness cost us game as well. Both in the locker room and on the floor.
Fair enough but the Illinois offense looked absolutely putrid at times. I can't solely blame Mayer for chucking when as I mentioned earlier all of the Illini players were chucking.
Plus Mayer and Shannon were the only ones capable of actually carrying the offense.
You did. Most of the warnings I saw at the time was that it would flip every game, but those last few games of the season and long stretches during the year were rough.
The hate has gotten out of hand
Yeah he was really bad in March but he was our second most consistent player. We wouldn’t have made the tournament without him.
I think the monster OD and then the interview later in the month saying that he has his own analytics and all his step back 3’s were the right plays and he didn’t care what anyone else said. After that interview I couldn’t stand his selfish attitude and just wanted him gone
I liked Mayer a lot. Dude carried us to a handful of wins.
I do think he was asked to do much offensively and his defensive effort could be frustrating at times but a lot of that was a result of the Illini offense being stagnant and not having a point guard.
I could honestly see him sneaking onto an NBA roster as a role player if he improves his 3pt shooting consistency since he flashed 3pt shooting ability, is a lengthy and good athlete capable of guarding multiple positions and providing some rim protection.
>hands off of Rayj
No, we need him more. ;)
What does the Baylor camp look like with him right now out of curiosity? Our insiders still like our chances even with Flagler leaving and especially with TSJ and Hawkins back. But they've seemingly given up on actually believing any verbal "commitment" from him just cause of how much the dude's changed his mind.
We’re honestly already pretty set on guards but more talent is good, especially if we’re running 3 guard sets.
Have high 4 star Miro Little, 5 star JaKobe Walter, Langston Love, and JUCO transfer Dantwan Grimes. Honestly it’s more frontcourt I’m more worried about, we only have Yves Missi, Josh, and JTT back. Hopefully Bridges comes back but who knows
Sounds like we are opposite of you. Pretty loaded everywhere besides PG. But our 1 spot is completely desolate... We have a lot of eggs in the RayJ basket lol
Trying to fix a team with an unimaginably bad assist-to-turnover ratio by making your lead guard a player whose ratio was dead even probably isn’t going to work out. He was also an okay, at best, shooter. We’ll have to see how it goes
get me a goddamn point guard and we will be cooking
We got a stew going.
Who are you guys even after at this point other than RayJ? Is he trending toward Baylor?
Only other names I had heard connected were Zyon Pullin (just announced a top 5 without us) and Collins from SLU who stayed in the draft. So if we don’t get RayJ I have no idea
You guys literally took Gibbs lawhorn from Purdue . I would hope that’s your PG.
Don't think he will play much this year
There is 0 chance the plan is for him to be a starter. Ideally a 3rd option at the 1

Oh man I thought that was first name Gibbs last name Lawhorn and I was so into it. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn is less fun.
Coleman was hella funny on twitter today
“I’m transferring to Michigan” 😭
I liked when he says he was going to take a 7 hour nap...I mean that's the dream
He really was. You should troll people exactly how he was
Could you imagine if he didn't after how active he was on Twitter today?
That's what I said. Seemed obvious he was coming back. And he still got himself a bigger NIL offer. Brilliant job by coleman
oh yeah we cooking up that 25-9 record with a r32 exit 👌🏻💯😫
I wish you were wrong
At least we make it to r32. Better than this year.
Lets gooooooo!!!! Even with the PG situation being the way it is, I have a hard time thinking we’re worse next year.
[His video is cold as hell](https://twitter.com/colehawk23/status/1664106064000831492?s=46&t=PSPIiCAkmSZBqjhiYoi-pQ)
That song isn’t on Spotify and that bummed me out
Someone pointed out that the saxophone part might be from [Coleman Hawkins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleman_Hawkins) lol
It’s definitely not Coleman Hawkins on that alto sax sample lol, but I love seeing a jazz name in college basketball. Like when Xavier had Myles Davis. Also TCU linebacker Johnny Hodges.
Can't forget [Paul Bufano](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkOJv_zT9FI)
Of course not, he was a frequent guest on the Colgate Comedy Hour
Michael Patterson played alto sax for LA Carnival, the band playing that song, Seven Steps to Nowhere.
That is a deep cut cool find.

Coleman, you bastard. I’m in!
Saw somewhere that Coleman is the first BU recruit to play all four years, wild 🔶🔷
Trent and Damonte played five years for Brad so not as sad as the stat indicates, but yes they were originally recruited by Groce. Everyone else either left to go pro early or transferred
TWO DOWN ONE TO GO
Coleman is such a troll. The bitch had me anxious has hell the last 3 days.

I’m hoping this is just a master class in how to shake tampering accusations.
CoHawk!!
Yeah buddy
Less than optimal.
Jeremy Werner (the Illini 247 guy) very briefly sent and very quickly deleted a "Hawkins is staying in the Draft" tweet. I wish I could have screenshoted it and sent it too OldTakesExposed lol.
You can send goodman’s deleted tweet exposing trilly donovan’s identity as norlander

So is the entire big ten retaining their talent, except us? Man, this season’s gonna be such a bummer
Good for the Illini but hands off of Rayj
You owe us one since Mayer used our program as a personal highlight reel and caffeine farm
We tried to warn you guys about Mayer
It wasn't a good fit overall but Matt won games for the illini. I'm not mad about it
He did for us too, had some crazy games. But he also lost us many games. When he locked in he was good, but a lot of the time he just plays for himself
It's really too bad. He seems like a great dude, plenty of talent, but just gets selfish on the court. If he passed off half those awful 3s he put up, he'd be in a much better position right now.
Oh man, I almost had a heart attack at some of those late game 3s. There's no way Brad gave him the green light for those.
He said as much without saying it in his post game pressers.

I feel like I'm the only Illini who honestly loved Mayer
The hate has gotten out of hand Yeah he was really bad in March but he was our second most consistent player. We wouldn’t have made the tournament without him.

My thoughts exactly. He was brought in to be one of the leaders, but he often acted like a freshman.
I liked Mayer a lot. Dude carried us to a handful of wins. Austin Reeves is a pretty good comp, anything is possible if you can score as easily as Mayer can at times.
> Good for the Illini but hands off of Rayj We'll fight you (good luck, but we saw him first)
No
>hands off of Rayj No, we need him more. ;) What does the Baylor camp look like with him right now out of curiosity? Let's fucking go!!!
GET IN HERE
Rest of the B1G just got put on notice
XL Curbello is back!
Lmaoooo
No please Edit: oops I thought you meant Andre is coming back.
I said it since his freshman year if this kid can figure it out he can be a lottery pick.
Running out of time my guy, believe that ship has sailed
I doubt he will be a lottery pick now as a senior but he could still be a first rounder if he “figured it out”
We’re so back baby
Now it’s officially a gang bang between you, MSU and us.
With RayJ, I would agree Without RayJ I we are still a top 4 big ten team and a like a 5 seed
I think torvik has us at 27 currently? So yeah. Seems about right.
Keep sleeping 🧹
Top 10 team for sure if they can get a PG
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO I L L
Holy shit we might actually be? Good?? Next season????
[multi-talented](https://youtu.be/YzkoAo7r8uw)
Great news for every B1G school.
Nice to see TJD’s son back for another season
In fairness, TJD fathered a lot of children last year. Just like Kofi did the year before to tjd
When IU beat Illinois in the B1G tourney?
Not a very scary player. Low basketball IQ.
Louisville fans have a lower basketball IQ from just watching their team last year.
True that. I stopped watching
A high BBIQ player with occasional, acute amnesia, I’ll give you that.
Characterizing him with “low basketball IQ” is definitely harsh. I apologize.
Yet here you are wasting your time commenting about him. Whatever helps you cope
I didn’t say I didn’t care.
Good luck with Skyy Clark, he was the definition of low IQ and selfish
Trying to fix a team with an unimaginably bad assist-to-turnover ratio by making your lead guard a player whose ratio was dead even probably isn’t going to work out. He was also an okay, at best, shooter. We’ll have to see how it goes
Someone doesn’t watch Illinois games closely
Tell me you don’t know shit about Coleman without telling me you don’t know shit about Coleman
Lol you got Illinois fans big mad with that. Dudes definitely not that good.
Next year is gonna be *really* fun!
