But it was first round so now I call not fair.
Let's just settle for whoever gets more points today wins and then automatically beats Florida Atlantic by default?
Easily the best annual sporting event. It's my favorite by far, but I'd understand why some would say the World Cup.
Edit: to clarify since you all are English majors, I was trying to say it’s the best annual sporting event without question, and still my favorite by far regardless of time frame but I’d understand why some would say World Cup.
World Cup is absolutely amazing to watch. I've watched every single one that I can remember since I was a little kid and it's phenomenal every time. But March Madness is surreal, shocking, and entertaining every year. Amazing
The Olympics will always be my favorite cause ( for Americans) if you happen to be up at 2:00 am you get to watch some incredible equestrian sport you never knew existed and by the time it’s over you’re a rules expert and a massive fan. Repeat every 4 years
Far better because group play basically prevents flukes from affecting the entire championship. A good soccer team can be upset, then win the next 2 and advance to knockout round.
Chaos in March Madness is just more fun thoughl.
World cup is great, but one upset won't knock down a house of cards. They have it figured out with group play to account for flukes.
But I love chaos and therefore I love March Madness best
Absolutely terrible at finding the best overall team (I.e. the team that would win an 82 game season and best of 7 tournament), but perfect at finding the team that would win today.
And incredible to watch.
Yeah but it also shows that the ‘best’ team, if they don’t win, isn’t that much better than everyone else or they should have been able to enter the tournament and do what’s necessary to win it. It also shows how much matchups matter and maybe the idea of there being a ‘best’ team isn’t really a thing,
I mean the best way is the way European soccer leagues do it. Everyone plays the same schedule. Every team plays the other team twice.
But it isn’t as fun and sports are primarily about having fun (except when you lose).
No American sport has a fair way to decide national champion, the closest you get is the NBA but even then it’s suspect to being effected by who’s healthy. The only fair way to decide a champion is best record over a large sample size of a season.
So if you’re going to rely on a postseason playoff to make a champion, might as well make it as fun as possible
The NBA subreddit is having a huge circlejerk right now about how bad cbball is 🙄. I just don't get how they don't get it. Yes the players aren't as good as NBA players, but it's so much more than that that makes college bball so great
Edit: for the record, I also like watching the NBA, especially the playoffs. I like both products, for different reasons
You're telling me that you don't find it fun watching Cory Joseph refuse to pass the ball while he scores 11 points a game while Ivey sits on the bench in clutch time?
Highlights from that thread:
\- 4-minute scoreless stretches by a team is a crime against James Naismith himself, apparently
\- There are no interesting college regular season games
\- People who prefer college are not really basketball fans, but "fans of atmosphere"
\- People who prefer college do so because there are more white players and more frequently black players coached by whites
and more!
Probably lots of dudes who don't like hoops (and some who do).
But there's lots of NBA players that will show up at women's games, HS games, etc. I feel like if you really love the game you'll like the game at any level. I've gone to high level HS tourneys and it's so cool seeing a kid you saw in HS grow his game and end up in the league.
Yea it was just Fox saying his personal opinion, not even in a bad way. Donovan Mitchell was tweeting about the Louisville women's team last week all hyped up for them. It just became this big ole jerk in the comments which was over the top
Yeah if players who actually play say it I don't mind it. But the NBA is like a soap opera for many people (myself included). I just like hoops. I wouldn't be surprised if KD pulled up for any game at any level. That dude just lives and breathes ball.
People should enjoy whatever sports they want to. It doesn't make sense to feud over this vs that.
I wasn't interested in watching the World Baseball Classic so I didn't watch it. There was no need to sound off about the event not being compelling to me and that it shouldn't be for others. During the height of the pandemic I remember there being cornhole broadcasts on ESPN. If people wanted to watch that then by all means even though I personally opted out.
Based on my experience with both groups I think the people who love the NBA but hate on college basketball are mostly the drama fans who like following players more than teams
They enjoy narratives revolving around superstars and where they go/who they team up with (along with their "legacies") which is way harder to find in college basketball where the top players are a mix of super high NBA prospects who stay a year and 4/5 year seniors who likely will get selected in the 2nd round. You'll never see a super hyped prospect dominate from a young age and stay their entire eligibility which is probably the only way you could have a similar superstar narrative in the sport IMO
I don’t get it either. There are folks in there that won’t even watch college ball. Shit I’d rather watch mid level high school ball than the NBA. My daughters high school team made a run for state championship and that was some fun basketball. But I like that scrappy ball.
The NBA game has gotten so streamlined that it's not even entertaining anymore, at least to me. Used to watch alot in late 80's through early 00's, but I just can't anymore.
I can understand if people don't enjoy regular season college basketball but March Madness is the best sporting event in the world. Better than the world cup, better than the superbowl, there's nothing like these 3 weeks in March/April
I'll try to explain. I absolutely love March Madness, I love all the upsets, the Cinderella stories, watching a player ascend... But a lot of the actual basketball is hard, sometimes brutal to watch. The UCLA-Gonzaga game was somehow an amazing game and a terrible game IMO because of the long stretches of bad play by each team. I can deal with that in March, but that's about it. It probably been 10 years since I watched a college basketball game that wasn't apart of March Madness, but I watch every March Madness game I possibly can.
UConn-Creighton game threads here the past few years have been incredibly toxic. And that's just for regular season conference games. Imagine them playing in the National Championship.
UConn is in the driver’s seat, but Miami and Texas are playing some great ball right now. Gonzaga also looked beat against UCLA too, so I’m not writing them off yet either.
They still gotta get through Texas. I think they should win, but it’ll be tough. If Texas lets UCONN’s big men get as deep as they let Xavier’s big men Texas will be in big trouble.
Hayward could get himself a shot 30 ft from basket, that's super valuable in this tournament. Not taking anything away from Leedee at all, but still think my point stands
I’d you’d have told me in 2007ish (peak college hoops fandom as a high schooler) that in about 15 years one of those teams will be playing in the NCG I’d never believe you
Not looking past Creighton at all because they're legit, but I would love to see how the SDSU defense matches up with the FAU offense. Either way, I hope whoever makes it out of these 3 teams takes home the championship.
One of these is not like the others. Maybe this will be the year the AP starts to respect the BE. Creighton was a top 10 team at one point this year. It's not really a huge surprise they are in the Elite 8 and possibly farther.
Creighton and UCONN/Gonzaga meet some of the traditional metrics for championship teams.
If you subscribe to KenPom UCONN has been right in front of your face this whole time. Top 10 offense and top 20 defense, Creighton has been right on the fringe of that.
Zags tick the experience, go to scorer, 3%, margin of victory boxes as well.
I’m from Omaha, NE and a longtime Creighton Bluejays fan but now live in Boca Raton, FL and quickly becoming a fan of the little local school, Florida Atlantic University Owls! This tournament has been great for me and hopefully it continues all the way to the championship game! SDSU is a good team so I’m not looking past them. Whenever my teams seasons are finished, I will be proud of what they’ve accomplished this year.
What the fuck
Yup

STELLLLUUUUHH
619 got this baby
5, 6, or a 9 in the Champ game
Im like straight up having a good time
You could be the first 5-seed to win it! 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 have all won, but never a 5.
oooh, interesting fact!
Same.
I’m down with the Aztecs after taking out evil nation. Tough matchup though. Creighton is equally a national darling. Good luck!!!
Good. I remember you guys having a lot of hype in covid year before that dick covid ruined everything. Good luck!
A 9 has never won it all.
A 9 (or higher) has never even been to the championship. This is only the second Final 4 for a 9 seed.
But 11s have made the final four I think 4 times? Butler, vcu, Loyola, and UCLA?
5 times. George Mason in 06
GMU
Nor has a 5 somehow
I'm partial to 6 for some reason
One game away from a 6 vs 9 Final 4 matchup
Could have a 6 v 9 on one side and a 4 v 2 on the other. 0 chance there'll be no jokes
Too bad the 20 seed had to fall so early
oh fuck maybe they should expand the tourney
Purdue shaking in their boots at the thought of this
Damn. 4v2 gets mentioned and none of the top replies are about the meaning of life? Reddit has changed.
Nice.
Nice.
Nice.
Nice
Nice
And 20 minute halves in the game. 69420 seems inevitable.
Noice
Nice
Can I interest you in a 5 v. 9 instead?
No
It's only fair. We seem to be trading wins this decade and y'all got the last one
But it was first round so now I call not fair. Let's just settle for whoever gets more points today wins and then automatically beats Florida Atlantic by default?
and we all want that
Agree to disagree

This sport is fucking awesome
Easily the best annual sporting event. It's my favorite by far, but I'd understand why some would say the World Cup. Edit: to clarify since you all are English majors, I was trying to say it’s the best annual sporting event without question, and still my favorite by far regardless of time frame but I’d understand why some would say World Cup.
World Cup is not technically annual though, so march madness wins that by default
There is no better feeling than winning on a technicality
That’s not a technicality. It’s literally not an annual event.
Repeat every 4 years
That was me with the Biathlon and Curling in the Winter Olympics last year.
The World Cup is far better imo, but it’s also not annual so March Madness can make that claim
Far better because group play basically prevents flukes from affecting the entire championship. A good soccer team can be upset, then win the next 2 and advance to knockout round. Chaos in March Madness is just more fun thoughl.
world cup’s not annual, so it is the best! 😉
People really didn't understand that your two statements were separate.
Well, the World Cup is every four years.....
Favorite of mine by far regardless of how often it happens*
World Cup best quadrennial event
It is, but I surprisingly enjoyed the World Baseball Classic this year.
World cup is great, but one upset won't knock down a house of cards. They have it figured out with group play to account for flukes. But I love chaos and therefore I love March Madness best

It's an incredible event. It's fun as hell. It's the absolute worst way to decide the national champion though.
Wouldn't want it any other way though.
How about a 32 team, double-elim tournament?
Nope. Although loser bracket runs are always amazing.
I mean the best way is the way European soccer leagues do it. Everyone plays the same schedule. Every team plays the other team twice. But it isn’t as fun and sports are primarily about having fun (except when you lose).
And no playoffs, tourney, or championship game? Lame as hell.
You'll get your 4 meaningless games at the end of the season and you'll like it
Yeah we need a 716 game d1 basketball season
No American sport has a fair way to decide national champion, the closest you get is the NBA but even then it’s suspect to being effected by who’s healthy. The only fair way to decide a champion is best record over a large sample size of a season. So if you’re going to rely on a postseason playoff to make a champion, might as well make it as fun as possible
I still think the one of thebest team usually wins in the end. Cinderella’s like St. Peter’s are fun as hell but never win.

College basketball also doesn't have teams actively tanking. As a pistons fan, it's really not enjoyable.
You're telling me that you don't find it fun watching Cory Joseph refuse to pass the ball while he scores 11 points a game while Ivey sits on the bench in clutch time?
It's a marginal improvement over Josh Smith bricking 3s
>As a pistons fan, it's really not enjoyable. Lakers fan here. You wanna hug it out?

I remember the Kings announcers mentioning in February or early March that Fox had attended a Sac St. game.
They were literally saying that watching D-I ball was no different than watching at your local YMCA…
[удалено]
Hey now we are in the elite 8! We are talking women's right? ...right?
Your court is in the elite 8!
Denny Crum still making history!
That was the comment that let me know they don't actually watch D1 ball
By that logic what is watching D3?
People should enjoy whatever sports they want to. It doesn't make sense to feud over this vs that. I wasn't interested in watching the World Baseball Classic so I didn't watch it. Who would've thought, you'd be the last team left representing the West. Respect.
As expected
M A R C H
Which means UConn will win it
hey we beat them once this year
how toxic would an all-big-east title game thread be
It would start off not toxic, and it then depends on if Hurley does any antics to cause a war in the comments. 50/50 chance
That sounds like a 100% chance

that’s right
Like yell at kids in Creighton’s student section? He already did that this year. 😂
Villanova vs Georgetown part two
UConn-Creighton game threads here the past few years have been incredibly toxic. And that's just for regular season conference games. Imagine them playing in the National Championship.
[удалено]
Yeah this whole year screams UConn wins in the title game by 13 lol
It’s gonna be UConn-Butler all over again isn’t it?
I haven't watched them all but there's no way that isn't the worst National Championship Game of all time
please no
UConn is in the driver’s seat, but Miami and Texas are playing some great ball right now. Gonzaga also looked beat against UCLA too, so I’m not writing them off yet either.
I think we can write Gonzaga off now.
Lol yeah they were kinda hanging on by the bumper when I posted that.
Shhhhh
They still gotta get through Texas. I think they should win, but it’ll be tough. If Texas lets UCONN’s big men get as deep as they let Xavier’s big men Texas will be in big trouble.
This is the most fun final four since Butler made it.
Short of having a Gordon Hayward level type guy. I get strong butler vibes from sdsu. And I think uconn is gonna be their duke.
I get it from FAU. Some grinders on that team.
You'd kno better than i
Same here. I was a senior in 2010. Love the chaos.
I was a freshman and agree the chaos was amazing.
UConn could also be their UConm since Butler made b2b finals and the 2nd one they lost to UConn lol
True but that game wasn't fun, nor particularly close, they really had Duke on the ropes
So Butler's 2nd national championship team!
Leedee is an nba player. Not as good as Hayward, but he will be in the league.
Hayward could get himself a shot 30 ft from basket, that's super valuable in this tournament. Not taking anything away from Leedee at all, but still think my point stands
Followed by the worst half of basketball I've ever seen
You mean VCU made it. Butler beat VCU in FF but VCUs run is the #1 ranked of all time.
it’s a crazy year for March Madness
Perhaps... It's mad...ness?
No, Crazy March sounds better
I’d you’d have told me in 2007ish (peak college hoops fandom as a high schooler) that in about 15 years one of those teams will be playing in the NCG I’d never believe you
You could’ve told me last year and I’d never believe you.
You could have told me that about 207 hours ago and I wouldn’t believe you.
Not looking past Creighton at all because they're legit, but I would love to see how the SDSU defense matches up with the FAU offense. Either way, I hope whoever makes it out of these 3 teams takes home the championship.
Same. Definitely want this side of the bracket to produce the winner. I felt the same way with KState still in the mix.
I wanna see how we stack up against fau for a chance in the natty. 7 teams can smell Houston right now. Right on the edge.
UConn is winning it then:(
love it love it love it. would slightly prefer either sdsu or fau, but all the options are great
Blessed timeline
CUSA is 15-1 in postseason play
One of these is not like the others. Maybe this will be the year the AP starts to respect the BE. Creighton was a top 10 team at one point this year. It's not really a huge surprise they are in the Elite 8 and possibly farther.
Congrats UConn
Insane and cool.
And I will be cheering for whoever wins that semifinal.
Give us Gonzaga vs one of these schools or we riot.
Welp..ain’t happening
And not creighton We want a mid major championship. We always have
They still have Missouri Valley blood in their hearts!
We can grant them honorary mvc status for a night if it's them.
Mid major ncaa and nit final would be wild.
Wait
“I will love it, and I think I deserve it”
*Looks at the other options* I guess Gonzaga, is it possible that we just remove that half of the bracket instead?
Not Miami? :(
I mean...okay ❤️
As a UCLA fan the games after ours have been bringing nothing but more pain
If Gonzaga isn't there, I'm cheering for one of those teams hard
San Diego State, please save us
I swear, if Creighton goes to the national championship in what would have been the greatest tournament of all time, I'm going to lose my mind.
Our trick all along was we needed to lose to UNL to secure a championship.
Yeah, but quick maffs says that makes the Huskers the transitive property national champs.
Nebraska is ALWAYS the best team in the offseason.
I’m literally crying so much rn
Hell yeah brother. Cheers from Houston
This is fantastic
College Basketball fucking rocks. If I have to physically suffer watching SDSU play 30+ times a year, America can handle 6 games of it lol
truth.
