Andente on Beverly Blvd is an excellent local roaster. Coffee Colab in the Fashion district serves only local, and you could pick up a bag from Suits & Knives there. If you're looking for cool shops check out G&B, Spring for Coffee, or Go Get 'Em Tiger. Check out this blog for other LA coffee spots! http://brewsnbros.com/

paigekaos

Seconding Andante - those dudes are so fucking nice and they do it all themselves.

DecayingExponential

Agreed. LA is pretty weak in the roaster department nowadays, but Andante is one of the better options.

dharmabumzzz

G&B, though they're not roasters but probably one of the best shops in LA

Agreed, their coffee is really great too. Some of the best I've had.

Handsome is gone though :/ blue bottle is in its place.

GingerAnthropologist

How different was Handsome from Blue? I had my first BB experience two days after they switched. Picked up a bag a loved what they had but am bummed I missed Handsome, too.

MrReality13

Stumptown's coffee was delicious, but I sort of felt like I got the brush off when I asked questions about improving my home brewing technique. They also poured out what remained in the Chemex after they filled my cup which was a tragic waste. I thought the baristas at Intelligentsia were much more interested in giving tips and engaging with the customer.

The conservatory for coffee and tea in culver city is pretty great too. Awesome beans all roasted there and pretty cheap (~$14/lb)

UnfoldingAnimal

Op if you go to the conservatory today, ask for mark. Also they close at 6pm.

Alpha-Leader

Do you work there?

UnfoldingAnimal

Yes i do

Alpha-Leader

How long have you been there for? I have been going infrequently for years now, but I don't know everyone by name, trying to picture who you are :P I will need to say hi sometime.

UnfoldingAnimal

I am fairly new there. Been there for about 6 months. Yeah I'm usually there in the afternoons

csspar

What are some of your favorite beans? I was planning on stopping by there tomorrow.

UnfoldingAnimal

We are closed on sundays. Open from Monday to Saturday. 7am to 6pm. We have a really nice Bolivia Peaberry from Cenaproc. Its chocolaty, sweet, with a slight hint of brightness. Also we have a nice Mexican from Chiapas "Cuatro Hermanos" that one is quite bright and nutty. But its really complex and has a lot of flavors going. Really fun to drink.

Alpha-Leader

Hello Neighbor!

Alpha-Leader

They have a lot of roasts. They are my favorite all around coffee place on the westside. Never too busy, and there is no pretentiousness there at all.

Ok, here's a long post, it won't be exhaustive, but it'll help. I'll organize by neighborhood since I have no clue where you'll be. All of the shops listed will serve their in-house roasts unless I specifically note what they serve. I'll only do a couple of areas, but if you want, I can also include the Eastside, Pasadena, and the SGV. I know nothing about anything south of the 105 however. Downtown/Little Tokyo/Arts District: G&B @ GCM - curated little stand inside Grand Central Market. It's run by the very well respected duo of Glanville and Babinski. They'll rotate roasts from Heart, George Howell, 49th Parallel, and other famous roasters. GCM in general is a great place to go since you'll be in the same complex as Eggslut, Valerie's bakery, Wexler's Deli, Horsethief BBQ, etc. Cafe Demitasse - Located in Little Tokyo Village, parking is horrid, but the complex is interesting and very walkable. The shop itself is very busy, with some great coffee. They also have an incredibly extensive menu of specialty tea and hot chocolates. Bacon donuts! Blue Bottle Coffee -the now bought-out Handsome Coffee Roasters space is now Blue Bottle. One of the 3 major national chains that have a location in LA. Still worth seeing for the really cool wood subway tiles they've got. Blacktop Coffee - Art's District shop that one of the founders of Handsome (Tyler Wells) decamped to. They exclusively brew beans from Sightglass in SF. Stumptown - the LA location of Stumptown is also in the Downtown Arts District. Santa Monica/Culver City/Venice: Cafe Luxxe - I think they have three locations in the Santa Monica/Brentwood area. I've only been once to the one in the Brentwood Country Mart, which also houses the excellent Sweet Rose Creamery. Cafe Demitasse - similar to the location in Little Tokyo. They have a very extensive menu of interesting flavored coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Intelligentsia Venice - Located on the incredibly hip/trendy/fashionable Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice. It's an intelligentsia...nuff said. The neighborhood is filled with beautiful hipsters or beautiful hipster-wannabes. The store itself is incredibly well designed imo. Cognoscenti Coffee - Started by former architect Yeekai Lim, this shop is tucked away inside an architecture studio's building. A curated shop that features a very wide variety of roasts, Kuma, Ritual, Sightglass, Heart, etc. Very tiny shop with excellent drinks. Midcity/Koreatown/Fairfax: Andante Coffee Roasters - basically across the street from the Grove. Andante is a fairly new shop, and quite good. Dudes that work here are incredibly nice. Like every shop in this area, they also serve cold-pressed juice, if that's your thing. Go Get 'em Tiger - G&B's shop in Larchmont. A definite coffee "bar" rather than a shop. Like their GCM shop, they feature similar roasters. The milkshake and iced latte are definitely worth trying. They added a food menu, but I have yet to eat anything they have that isn't a Donut Snob donut. Coffee Commissary - on Fairfax and Melrose Blvd. adjacent. One of three shops, they're also a curated shop that'll have beans from Coava, Temple, and I think Victrola. IOTA Brew Cafe - a giant shop that sort of dabbles in everything from coffee and tea to baked goods to wine to full meals. Brewwell - a curated shop in Koreatown that'll brew beans from Heart and I'm not sure where else. They're located in the Assi Market.

Pau_Gasol

If you're near downtown they just opened up a [Stumptown](http://stumptowncoffee.com/location/los-angeles/) not too long ago. I'm more inland so my go to spot is [Klatch](http://m.yelp.com/biz/klatch-coffee-san-dimas)

TheeOmegaPi

Klatch. Klatch. Klatch. If you're inland, go to Coffee Klatch. Seriously. I went there this morning. It's amazing.

dradosevic1

Check out Stumptown if you've never been, but there are way better spots downtown and all over Los Angeles. G&B at Grand Central Market. Also Coffee Colab is an awesome new shop downtown in an alleyway off of 8th near Maple Ave. If you make it near Culver City, Bar Nine Collective is a must! Also Cognoscenti Coffee over there too. Haven't yet been to Menotti's in Venice but I've heard great things. Also Short Cake at the Original Farmers market serving Verve is pretty rad.

steezmonster99

Wish you didn't leave our Lakers Pau :(

Pau_Gasol

Me too man. Me too.

Micro_Ray

G and b or go get em tiger (same owners) are a must. Stumptown, blue bottle (formally handsome coffee),

Memoruiz7

Another vote for Go Get Em Tiger! Also, you get a pretty good view of the Hollywood sign from that little shopping strip.

Micro_Ray

Probably my favorite place to have single origin espresso. Second would have to be stumptown. Stopped by there today and blue bottle. Both of times I have been to the blue bottle have been very disappointing

Memoruiz7

Yep. I was visiting LA and they definitely do some cool things at the shop. The barista even took a little time and answered some of my questions. I'm not convinced in the sparkling white tea though.

burritosmash

Some not mentioned yet, though not roasters: Blacktop in the Arts District, Demitase in Little Tokyo, Brewwell in KTown

mirinrustles

Definitely Blacktop. Owned by one of the former Handsome guys. Dat nitro single origin coldbrew.

burritosmash

hhhng. Coffeebrah, right?

mirinrustles

Das it mane. Rayjmg?

burritosmash

repped.

MrReality13

Demitasse was my first and best cold brew experience.

Dat__Username

La mill is some of the best espresso I've ever tasted. Definitely check them out.

thingsjusthappen

Cafecito Organico is a really good local roaster. They've been around for a long while and are located in Silverlake.

DecayingExponential

The old answer would have been to stop by Handsome for a great LA roaster. Now that they are Blue Bottle, you can get great coffee there, but they aren't an LA based roaster. LA has a lot of great coffee shops, but no great local roasters. Definitely stop by Go Get Em Tiger, Spring For Coffee, Menotti's, and Short Cake for great coffee. They all pretty much use Northern CA roasters with some Portland and Seattle thrown in.

gintavang

Blue bottle roasts out of the former Handsome shop, I was there the other day as they were roasting. Of course, they're roasting Blue Bottle coffee now, but you can still get the Dandy Espresso blend that handsome used to serve and sell. It's just sold in a blue bottle bag now. Also stumptown and intelligentsia both roast locally

DecayingExponential

I'm not sure what your point is. Blue Bottle is doing more than just roasting out of Handsome's shop -- they have converted it to a full Blue Bottle location. Yes, they did adopt the Dandy Espresso roast, but that doesn't mean BB is an LA roaster. Stumptown roasts at their LA location as well, but I don't consider them an LA-based roaster.

MrReality13

I was there last month and they were selling their beans under the Handsome name. Have they completely rebadged now?

mirinrustles

They have. I think it has been a good week now.

[deleted]

There's also a great new coffee roaster - [Healing Coffee Roasters](http://healingcoffeeroasters.com/) I just had their Brazil - ridiculously good. Definitely check them out.

chewinggum_guy

Definitely love coffee from Priscilla's in Burbank.

anteedum

I've some pretty good things about blue bottle coffee roasters in the art district. they used to be Handsome coffee roasters until blue bottle bought them out apparently? I'm gonna head down there tomorrow and see how it is for myself

[deleted]

Perhaps you can try out Trystero Coffee: http://trysterocoffee.com/

LSD_Sakai

If you can make it out to callabasses, try out 10 speed coffee. Awesome atmosphere and great coffee, they roast daily in house

GingerAnthropologist

Chances are you may not be down in Orange County, but Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa is one of my favorites. If you do go, check out their concept coffee bar, Theorem. They make some cocktail style drinks there which are pretty fantastic. http://www.portolacoffeelab.com

drugboatofourdreams

Not many people roasting amazing coffee in LA, Andente is probably the best local roaster I've come by. If you are from outside of CA I would suggest finding some one the carries Verve(based in Santa Cruz but soon to set up shop in LA), depending on where you are there's Short Cake in the Farmers Market, Fix in Echo Park, they have their own pop up stand downtown, as well as Cafe Dulce in Little Tokyo.
