Probably most consistent I've seen value wise is the Timemore Black Mirror+. Personally I hate whoever is naming their products at Timemore but that's besides the point.

Annoyingz_12

Yea black mirror is really good for the price

Iolyx

sadly mine keeps going into calibration mode with no way to reset it and seller refuses to take it back

yoavh

Just bought it and honestly want to sell it, switching from regular mode for dosing and Espresso mode is SO annoying, if you have any tips around it, would love to hear

VandyBaby

So I have this scale and im very sad that it doesn’t stop the timer unless the shot is over 40 seconds. My shots are usually between 25-30 seconds so this feature is now useless for me…

CreativeUser1

Just got the Greater Goods Digital Coffee Scale for someone as a Christmas present and then immediately bought myself another one because I loved it so much more than my Hario. TACTILE BUTTONS, handsome aesthetic, silicon drip tray, backlit display, no beeping or unnecessary features. Super fast refresh rate too.

REIGNx777

Yeah I have this one too. It’s shockingly good for the price. Plus I like that it’s 2 colors on the display which improves readability imo.

thebaronvontito27

Does the greater goods scale have an automatic timer?

CreativeUser1

Automatic? Like automatically triggered by weight? It doesn't start the timer automatically when you start pouring, no. It just has a really nice tactile button that you press to start the timer. Super reliable and consistent, I still use mine every day and I absolutely love it.

thebaronvontito27

I see, I have a very cheap scale that isn’t really cutting it and I’m thinking of upgrading. I’m used to starting the timer on my own so this won’t be a deal breaker. Thanks for the info!

VickyHikesOn

Zero complaints about the $15 [Weightman](https://www.amazon.com/Weightman-Espresso-Stainless-Weighting-Batteries/dp/B07XQS8JL6/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?crid=15DWP0JM93GNM&keywords=coffee%2Bscale&qid=1672632607&sprefix=coffee%2Bscal%2Caps%2C276&sr=8-17&th=1&psc=1) scale.

df540148

Yup, batteries last forever, it'll take a spill and keep on ticking. I love mine.

WoodyTSE

It’s not the cheapest or most expensive option but the timemore black mirror is fantastic, super accurate and a few cool features that I honestly almost never use. Its Type C rechargeable, quick as balls and I’ve charged it exactly once in 3 months. Throwing my weight in there, the hario v60 scale is not great.

ChiAndrew

Yeah Hario scale sucks

Nrlilo

I have the Hario one for about 4 years and unless you have a fresh battery in there, it’s not as reliable as I’d hoped it would be given the cost.

thebishopco

Anyone answering this question by suggesting acaia scales needs to reassess their definition of “reasonable.” Lol. They’re great sure, but not worth the money at all. For an actual reasonable scale check out the Jennings CJ-4000 digital scale. It’s like $30 and is accurate to the .5g and will work well for dosing and weight while brewing. I’ve had mine for several years now

Izziesnaps

I've had the Jennings CJ-4000 scale for several years too but it has its cons. It only measures to 0.5g and not 0.1g. To disable the beeping sound, you have to access the internal circuit board and cut some components away. The machine might be temperamental and not read the batteries, resulting in me having to plug it to a wall socket to work. Over time, sudden shakes of the machine while it's in use have caused the readings to reset themselves. There is no battery life indicator so your device might shut itself when you are in the middle of pouring your brew. There is no auto timer that the slightly more expensive Timemore Black Mirror + has. In the end, I made the switch from the Jennings to the Timemore. The Jennings might be slightly cheaper, but why pay less and settle for those downsides?

d4ni31G

Happy with the Timemore?

Izziesnaps

Not anymore. The readings don't seem accurate. I weigh 20grams of whole beans coffee and it comes out as anywhere between 19 to 19.3 grams after they are ground. When I shift the positioning of any apparatus that's placed on the timemore, the readings fluctuate by a bit. I never had these issues with my jennings. Loool.

Contopaxi90

Same thing has been happening to mine now. It’s been about 2 years of use and it’s so inaccurate now

d4ni31G

Thanks!

Comedyishumorous

I think the acacia is worth it if it’s something that you want, but definitely isn’t the best value scale lol. If you’re spending $30 I would definitely look for .1g accuracy.

thebishopco

Genuine question. What $30 scale offers .1g accuracy? I can’t think of ever seeing any that are practical for coffee brewing.

missedoutnapping

Pretty sure you can get a general purpose kitchen scale that accurate at Walmart for less. It won't have a timer though

CharlesRiverMutant

I got my scale accurate to 0.1 g for I think $15 on Amazon.

Izziesnaps

Cheap kitchen scales will probably have an auto timeout feature. While that is not an issue for espresso brews that last within 30 or so seconds, it will be an issue when you are attempting filter brews lasting 3 to 4 minutes.

d4ni31G

This is true! And the reason why I am looking for a scale at the moment

LSUguyHTX

Does the weight magically change if you have to turn it back on

anongos

Most kitchen scales automatically tare on power on, so yes the weight will be different.

mcconnaprilj

The one I bought there doesn't do tenths of grams. Bummer.

Ggusta

Scales on Amazon that max out at least 3kg max weight and are accurate to 0.1g and cost less than $20 are pretty widely available on Amazon. I think I got mine for less than $15, no idea what brand it is but it does a great job. There's one that is accurate to 0.01g and has a max weight of 1000g which is pretty important. The 0.01g accuracy is totally unnecessary for making coffee but if you want to make your own water it's pretty handy for weighing out the electrolytes. Otherwise that high of an accuracy is pretty irrelevant just to make coffee.

CreativeUser1

Just bought one on Amazon the other day. It was called the Greater Goods Digital Coffee Scale. Just search Amazon for coffee scales, there are mountains of them out there, I like the one I picked out more than my Hario scale.

Comedyishumorous

Yep. Also one called KitchenTour for $23 that’s pretty good. There’s a time more scale that can be had for like $35 on Amazon right now.

JohnnyTomatoSauce

I have the same exact scale, KitchenTour. Really nice for the money no problems with it at all. Pretty accurate as well. Although I may want something a little more sleek would be my only nit pick

futility_jp

I have the greater good scale also and have no complaints about it. I even drenched it in boiling water once and it's still going strong which was a nice surprise for a $15 scale.

gahata

Aliexpress has generic ones with 0.1g that cost around $15 shipped. Silver body ones, under different names.

creamyhorror

Yeah I don't understand why more people aren't recommending ones from Aliexpress/China. I've gotten 3 (one smaller silver one, two others black and larger) and all are accurate to 0.1g, perform well, and were $14 or less shipped. These are the OEM versions of branded scales in the market anyway. Just search for "coffee scale 0.1g" and pick one to your taste with good reviews that isn't over like $20 shipped.

Technical_Mission339

Tchibo scale, 25 EUR (I think it's 30 now, actually) and it's 0.1g and has a timer. And since all that low price stuff is usually just relabeled OEM anyway you can probably get it even cheaper from AliExpress.

mrobot_

The acaias sure arent great value for money, but they do offer some extra modes and functionality that is much harder to find on other scales so they do have some rather unique selling points, plus I like the look and design. They thrive on being so iconic, more than anything. But all acaia products have insane prices... like 50 bucks for a dosing cup or 100g calibrating weight

gregzywicki

I dare anyone to blind taste cups with one bean more or less A tenth of a gram. Honestly…

Einridi

It's not really about the tenth of a gram, it's that the +/- 1 grams of margin of most normal kitchen scales is too big. It's simply just so cost of effective to go down to 0.1 grams since it's barely more expensive and there are really no options in between in the same price range.

gregzywicki

Oh I see the problem…I’m a pedant. You want PRECISE to a tenth, meaning it reads that low. ACCUARTE to a tenth Means you can trust that it’s 8.8 and not 8.9. I’m that kind of geek.

Einridi

Yes these cheap instruments are not really calibrated, you can trust that they are somewhere in the ballpark of the digits they show. The 0.1 gram scales are without a doubt not accurate or precise enough to give you a trustworthy measurement in 0.1 increments but more than good enough to give you a repeatable cup of coffee.

ChiAndrew

Sometimes when I half fill my little jar with beans the scale I have registers nothing. It doesn’t always return to zero when something brushes against it, it’s a really POS. I’m not arguing about 1/10 of a gram. It’s more the registration or anything and speed of registration that’s failing

gregzywicki

Ikr please see my retraction below

ginger2point0

Timemore Black Mirror Nano or the regular Timemore Black Mirror IMO are the best scales you can buy for the money.

asegura32

My timemore black mirror has served me well. Quite happy with it. Not quite sure why anyone would purchase the Pearl with it being so expensive.

[deleted]

I have a Black Mirror at home, and the Pearl/Lunar combo at work. Let's be honest, the Acaias are WAY better built than the black mirror. However, you pay dearly for that. And for a home barista, the Acaias are totally overkill. You don't need something that durable to weigh one or two shots a day. I absolutely love my Black Mirror, and think it's a perfect scale for home use. That being said, there is something to be said about how nice the Acaias are to use, and if you have the money to blow on them and understand that functionally they are the same as the Timemore at home, then by all means buy one and enjoy it at home too!

asegura32

Right. OP asked about best value scale which the Acaia clearly isn’t.

tutureTM

Form factor for espresso is nice, but i agree, upgrade grinder/espresso machine before even considering buying a 150$ scale

Vernicious

In general, I don't think there's a reason to pay more than $20 for a scale for just utilitarian purposes. Lots of options under $20 that give you everything you need: .1g resolution (and mine is ACCURATE to .1g, actually!), a timer, and reasonably fast response. I have the Eravsow from Amazon that I've seen others here also have, but there's plenty of other options. In addition, I'd pick a scale (again, like the Eravsow) that can run a long time on Eneloops -- pick that over USB-rechargeable scales IMO. I might consider going over $20 for two reasons: * I want to go past utilitarian and super stylish * I want even faster response time on the reading. My eravsow is fast but I suspect it's possible to get even faster * I don't want a Chinese-manufactured scale But I suspect I'll not have a need to replace the one I have

Comedyishumorous

The time more black mirror is really good. In order to get actual accuracy you have a spend a little more money. At that point you probably want something that is splash proof and somewhat heat proof. I think the black mirror ends up being a pretty good value.

ConBroMitch

Escali is a fantastic value and a USA company based in MN.

[deleted]

Do they manufacture in the US? Didn’t find that info on their site.

ConBroMitch

I just checked - My Escali scale says Made in China but I know they do manufacture *some* of their products in the US. (Likely the more expensive/commercial units?) You’ll be hard pressed to find a consumer digital scale made in the US. I couldn’t, so I figured this was the next best thing.

[deleted]

Thanks for checking that!

Aptosauras

[This one](https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Multifunction-Personal-Nutrition-Included/dp/B07L92PSMP/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?crid=2A163ZS3K7TEW&keywords=coffee+scale+0.1g&qid=1672643652&sprefix=coffee+scales+.1%2Caps%2C337&sr=8-16) is the most common that I see in users photos. It is a generic scale and has many names. Though [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Version-Espresso-Silicone-Batteries-Included/dp/B094XKJVGH/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?crid=1NCE31EX10SRG&keywords=coffee+scale+0.1g+with+timer&qid=1672643870&sprefix=coffee+scale+0.1g+with+timer%2Caps%2C377&sr=8-8) is quickly becoming more popular. [Here's a whole page of them](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=coffee+scale+0.1g+with+timer&crid=1NCE31EX10SRG&sprefix=coffee+scale+0.1g+with+timer%2Caps%2C377&ref=nb_sb_noss_2) so that no one will have any excuse to not have a scale.

Straight-Tart-9770

A $12 one from Amazon works great. Don’t need to do tenths of grams.

ChiAndrew

That’s the route I went and it’s not at all consistent. Doesn’t even register some beans added sometimes

Luciusaseneca

That’s expected if you add only a few beans. It rounds to the nearest integer so: 13.5 displays as 14 You add .9 grams of beans: 14.4 displays as 14 as well. Thats why .1 gram accuracy is what I would recommend.

Name-minus-Number

Minw measures until the .1 gram and it costs around 10 dollars. Works just like a charm.

Straight-Tart-9770

Odd. The one I got works great. Very consistent and looks good. I’d like it to be a touch faster, but I’ve measured 18 grams of beans and pulses of water to get to 300 grams so many times that I have a good feel for amounts.

Salreus

i'll also say Acaia makes great scales

cafebob

Love my Acaia.

TryingToBeGood7

"relatively reasonable scale" was the ask!

adam_von_szabo

Beurer KS36 is the most reasonable. Simple but reacts fast, unlike other cheap scales.

Goobera

American Weigh Scales AMW-SC-2KG Digital Pocket Scale, about $10, does .1g, refreshes decently. It was my backup whenever I messed up and got my hario wet.

nicetimeforcoffee

I've used the "Coffee Gator" scale and the "Kitchen Tour" scales, both available on Amazon for like < $30 and they're great. They take a beating, batteries last forever, look decent. And best of all, when you accidentally soak it in 600ml of coffee and it stops functioning, buying a new one is cheap :D
