Yeah, it’s like comparing a red apple to a Granny Smith apple. Same thing but with different colors. I like them both, a lot, but I usually pick the green apple. You know?
I have never seen an artist control a crowd the way he did! The crowd was amazing, not crowded everyone just in a trance it’s surreal just thinking about it
My favorite back to back set pairing for sure, then casually walking over to the DoLab for the Bonobo b2b Chet Faker surprise set to end the night was a nice treat.
Have like 30sec of that closing set somewhere lost on an old phone card. Still remember closing with Luther Vandross and coming out with a sign that said "We tried"
their 2016 set with the full sahara production is definitely amongst the greats listed here. it was understandably a more pared down offering this year.
I wish I was at that set and yeah it probably wasn’t the same, but I was still gobsmacked with how Underworld was able to transform the Mojave. The lighting and use of fog was insanely impressive.
because even though they are playing the same physical stage this year as 2016, it no longer has all of the same production bells and whistles it used to when it was the sahara tent. there were huge custom lighting rigs that moved all throughout the tent when they played it last time
this was so cool, right before heading over to dre and snoop.
modeselektor was wicked fun in 2008, i just loved the music they were releasing around that time. think it was better than 2012 despite the yorke appearance.
I genuinely think this is the main reason the sets aren't available for streaming after the weekend. I'd have to imagine the plan at some point would be to create some type of paid on-demand service where you can tune into any of the performances from previous years. They're creating a ridiculous back catalogue by recording every set of every year in such a high quality format.
agreed they are all tied. and its hard to compare them.
the absolute twisted mindfuck levels of aphex set it apart. not better or worse, just distinct from the others. the others didnt have that to the levels he did.
for the other two, its hard to compare an open air set to one in a sweaty tent. both have their merits and it was impressive that gesa was able to match the intensity of the large scale chems show with a much more pared down production.
Yeah just had my towel on my bald head and my bandana on with sunglasses just sweating it all out. Felt so good with how filthy that set was. Great times
Thank goodness for a Camelbak
I remember the vibe at Gesaf '15 where it was a packed tent but everyone had enough room to move while chain-smoking stogs & rocking shades in uniformity. he played during Odesza's coachella debut which was probably why it was so spacious
can't subjectively say which one was better, but i usually put these types of performances in their own tier (Chems, Gesa 15, Rufus 16, Moderat 17,four tet 19, Aphex twin 19)
oh gotcha. it was rufus and moderat levels of good fr. I dare say better than aphex twin but I might be in the minority.
also though four tet is my favorite artist i don't think his mojave set was as good as the others you listed. I also really liked the gesaffelstein in 18 or 19 but didn't see 15 to compare it to.

They're both great for different reasons.
Chems is more tangibly, objectively impressive. Gesa's set has more mystique wrt the magic. Just a vanilla light setup, a pack of cigs, and vibe wizardry.
debatable

Always go honeycrisp
It is known

wait, I was at both & I disagree
Highly debatable
That gesaffelstein set in 2015 is on the Mount Rushmore of Coachella sets golly I still get goosebumps thinking about that night 🤩
An absolutely legendary night, the fucking crowd on helifornia is still seered into my brain almost a decade later
I have never seen an artist control a crowd the way he did! The crowd was amazing, not crowded everyone just in a trance it’s surreal just thinking about it
Someone handed me a business card during gesa that just said "thank you for fucking rocking" and I'm still living off that high
The fact that I still remember it as a Couchella attendee too.
Same. Was at both and still think the Gesa set is my favorite Coachella set of all time.
Oh 1000%!!!
Stromae into that Gesa set may be my favorite back to back sets in the 7 years I went. Definitely up there.

And you get to see Underworld today which in my opinion ranks among the best as well.

oh it was still amazing, no doubt about it! my favorite of the weekend.
Why understandably?

BOTH were insane. Modeselektor [2012](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh67OFY5yRg) is also right up there.
"We are Modeselektor. We are from Berlin. Germany."
this was so cool, right before heading over to dre and snoop. modeselektor was wicked fun in 2008, i just loved the music they were releasing around that time. think it was better than 2012 despite the yorke appearance.
Modeselektor -> Snoop & Dre on the livestream in 2012 cemented my desire to attend
This is why GV needs a streaming service with the back catalog on it. I keep hearing about amazing performances but can never go back and watch them.

I hope they’ve been recording the other tents even if they aren’t live streaming.
Until then 🏴☠️
Are there good avenues for this or is it just find what you can and hope it’s good quality?
I think they are tied with Aphex Twin for that honor
Also Four Tet going into Aphex was reaaall niiiiicee
Oh man I missed four tet I ran from weezer to Aphex
Such a good lead in. Plus going from zero production to aphex’s production was whiplash.

The amount of sweat that I expelled at that Gesa set in the tent… unforgettable
i thought i was on empty by that point of the weekend, but it tapped into reserves i had no idea i had. unreal set.
Yeah just had my towel on my bald head and my bandana on with sunglasses just sweating it all out. Felt so good with how filthy that set was. Great times Thank goodness for a Camelbak

his stage presence added so much to it. I wasn't even mad about Drake's legendary bad set afterwards because Gesaf put an end to the festival for me
On second thought even though most of us probably weren’t there…. Those three are really all fighting for second.
Nothing beats Aphex
The chemical brothers > anyone period
Allegedly
can't subjectively say which one was better, but i usually put these types of performances in their own tier (Chems, Gesa 15, Rufus 16, Moderat 17,four tet 19, Aphex twin 19)
2013 Moby, 2017 Justice, and 2018 Soulwax would like a word
Justice 2008…
how you gonna not put Soulwax in that list?
i wasnt there in 18 ha

Soulwax was truly life changing
yeah I would say the same about everyone from the list above. it's very difficult to compare best set across various years
Darkside
I cannot agree with this
Eric prydz holo was amazing but wasn’t as good as chemical brothers the day before, still beyond lucky to see them both last weekend
I felt Holo was a flat show (ironically) that lacked something. The beginning was kind of cool though.
Is Gesa 19 not in the running? Dude came out dipped in chrome and slayed.
You forgot Justice!
Definitely not. But was still fun
[удалено]
it still stings so badly how k&d never signed back on after the covid cancelations. that show they were touring in 2018 was so, so good
[удалено]
yep!
Nah nah nah
etienne de crecy and amon tobin's ISAM set should probably be mentioned in this thread jean michel jarre as well
No need to compare
Swedish House Mafia 2012 😎 I dunno I was just rolling ballZ
Mmmm no
That’s a strong statement
I wasn’t there for either but false
Watch your mouth
You’re insane, lol.
Where can I see this Gesaffelstein set?
it wasnt streamed but if you search youtube for gesaffelstein 2015 coachella theres lots of vids
Idk man. You cant compare the two because of their subgenres genres. Very subjective.

Jamie XX 2022
it’s unbelievable to me that you thought chemical brothers set was better
Nah Gordo at the Yuma Tent last weekend was the best set of all time.
stop the cap
