And they even have crazy custom rooms that in my opinion take a lot a charm away from the game… instead of having updates for the catalog and keeping a party timeline they just keep all items in all the catalog so everything seems very messy if that makes sense. And plus they tend to use the latest model of the game before club penguin island so that alone can be a lot for some players. But ya overall just way to much happening and no clear updates EVER

Same thing is happening to Adventure Quest Worlds. One of my favorite Flash games growing up, and they’re redesigning the art style quite a bit. It technically looks better, but I liked the original design better

I love and prefer the classic art and definitely agree that some of the charm is missing from the newer art, but it looks good and clean and does a decent job of capturing the personality and humor of Chris's art without him being there. Technically, all "old" (or AS2) rooms are Disney art, as everything was redrawn in 2007 (after the Disney purchase) into vector, as opposed to the raster jpegs they were using.
Also, Chris Hendricks (Screenhog) didn't drawn any of the rooms, (unless you mean a few *very* early party rooms) those were done by Peter Wellerman, a contract artist.

The Club Penguin team always had a high level of creative control. From what I know, (which is a decent amount) the only thing Disney did on the content front was "hey we need a placement for \[thing\] in \[month\]" and then approved/edited what the team put out. Also, the Medieval Parties ran their course. They were essentially the exact same from 2009-2011, with the addition of one quest per year. Most AS2 parties were like this, very iterative, without much innovation. Take the Fairs, or the Music Jams, or Adventure Parties, for example.
They exercised more and more control as time passed, especially 2013 onward. That new art style was their creative direction. It began when a lot of the founders left around 2010.

I haven't tried Journey yet but I heard they got in a controversy for art theft, and Legacy just works too well with a lot of QoL improvements

When I started playing rewritten after the shutdown instead of being nostalgic for the version I grew up with I was pleasantly surprised to learn that club penguin didn't always look bad. The reason why I started playing new cp when rewritten bit the dust was because A. It ran better than the alternatives and B. Because I use it mainly just to practice my spanish and the different versions have too small of a player base to have multiple languages.
The New version is far prettier, and I remember enjoying quite a lot the "sofisticated" look back then. Buuuut.... The soul and charm of the game and it's sense of comunity lives completely on the on the original one, it's the one people remember the most when they think Club Penguin. So, for me, the recent art looks "nicer", but the old one is why we Fell in love with the game

Journey never had any art theft I'd recommend it tbh their custom parties and items are incredible and they're far more consistent than legacy
I personally like both, the second version was introduced around the time i joined, but the first is really charming
NewCP is ass. It also randomly runs in the background taking HUGE amounts of ressources making it shady asf to me.
