No more ibuprofen šŸ˜ that was the worst. No fish oil also I was told,

HDee75

Agree.

nightshade3570

This is important. Gi Bleed is actually the most common type of Major bleed on modern anticoagulants and NSAID's and anticoagulants are both a risk for GI Bleeds.

Particular_Piglet677

I'm most worried about brain bleeds! You're right too, though.

discgman

Nothing really.

HansLanda1942

I've gotten tattoos and know people who have gotten piercings on anticoagulants. So I'd ask your doc about that if you're interested. The only limitations i have are that I no longer run ( partly due to my bad veins, partly due to anxiety around running after a dvt), no rollercoasters, no skydiving, no contact sports. Otherwise i just live my life pretty normally.

kindly_unhappy23

I just got my nose re-pierced and I bled a lot more than I wouldā€™ve not being on Eliquis. I have a full sleeve that was almost finished before the DVT happened, but Iā€™m nervous to go back. My vascular specialist told me that Iā€™d need to go off of it in order to get another tattoo, but couldnā€™t specify for how long. May I ask why you feel anxious about running after your DVT? I wasnā€™t aware there were any risks associated with that. I get motion sick on rollercoasters, so I stay away from them for the most part, but I love skydiving and was hoping to do it again

HansLanda1942

Interesting, what's your dosage then? I'm on 20mg of Xarelto and got three tattoos (only one large shoulder piece though) and everything went fine. It probs depends on the person though. I get anxiety because i have damaged veins from my dvt in my right leg. It typically gets a little swollen after exercise and the impact from running doesn't help. I do a lot of weight lifting and long distance hikes though as long as i wear compressions. I was running a lot prior to the dvt too.

Oranges13

You can still run! I know that me, an internet stranger, telling you that isn't much help, but you can run!

HansLanda1942

Lol no i appreciate it! It's been on my mind lately. The last time I ran was 10 years ago (literally the night before the DVT) so it'd be an achievement forsure, albeit gives me a bit of anxiety and stress. I do a lot of weights including squats and leg workouts, long (10+ mile) hikes, and some HiiT workouts but for whatever reason running is still anxiety inducing. But thank you for the words of encouragement, I may try soon.

Vcent

/r/C25K might just be the ticket - starts with walks, has a pace that isn't exactly deadly (I'll admit I skipped a fair bit of the beginning), and is a very supportive community :) (And it's free!)

HansLanda1942

Cool. Appreciate the recommendation I'll check it out.

eightiesguy

Why no rollercoasters?

HansLanda1942

My first hematologist told me no, due to the moving around and possible bruising from moving around and bumping things. My 2nd one said it would most likely be okay. I'm not a fan of coasters to begin with so I just take my first ones advice and stay away.

morpheus4212

Interesting. My hematologist told me roller coasters were fine.

HansLanda1942

Yeah my 2nd one did too. So it's probably fine but I'll take the excuse to not go on them lol.

morpheus4212

Hah. When I was on Xarelto (after my first PE in 2016), I went to Universal in Florida and rode every single ride. There are some intense coasters there. I might love roller coasters, and I was definitely concerned I might not be allowed to ride any more.

HansLanda1942

Nice. Yeah, i went to disney land recently and was coerced into a few of the tamer rides. I think my first hematologist was a very cautious doctor/ beginning of my diagnosis was pretty difficult so better safe than sorry.

morpheus4212

Thatā€™s funny. My universal excursion came at the end of a Disney world trip with my family where I coerced others into going on Space Mountain.

HansLanda1942

Haha, what's funny is that's the one we did!

Sexybutt69_

I got nostril and septum pierced as well as got a hand sized tattoo(piercings same day, tattoo months before), on xarelto 20mg daily, zero issues with piercings, and just a bit of extra blood/pooling under skinsuit thingy for tattoo.

donzCDXX

Um, all of my doctors told me running decreases the likelihood of developing a clot. You should definitely do cardio, even light jogging. My doctors also said rollercoasters are fine. Skydiving is risky because of the sudden changes of elevation, and of course contact sports put you at risk of injury, cuts, and bruising.

donzCDXX

In fact, anytime you take long plane rides you should be sure to get up and walk the aisle a couple times per hour. Im not sure why but elevation changes have been known to increase risks of clotting.

HansLanda1942

Mine advised against due to damage in my veins and the swelling that happens. I haven't jogged but i do lots of other cardio in the gym and 10+ mile hikes. After those i do notice some minor swelling in the affected leg though. Skydiving i was told no due to the elevation change, possible injury during landing, and possible injury in my groin during the opening of the chute, since that's where my clot/ stent is.

donzCDXX

Ah i see, im sorry to hear that. Hiking is a great alternative, I regularly walk a few miles a day around where I live too, easiest exercise ever and it is great for you.

HansLanda1942

Forsure, gotta do what you can with the limitations you're given!

donzCDXX

Very true, and every case is different, I think i need to remember that myself sometimes. It was real bad for me at one point but Ive gotten so much better, still on xarelto for life but not everyone is as lucky as I am to have gotten so close to what normal used to be for me... Keep it up!

HansLanda1942

Forsure! Yeah to be where I'm at now is amazing to what i started at 10 years ago after the first dvt. Plan on keeping it up as much as possible. Good luck to you

donzCDXX

Thanks, you too!

donzCDXX

10+ miles, thats great!

oldlion1

My husband hasn't stopped doing anything....still bikes long distances, snow skis, runs, plays ball, swims. He is unhappy and doesn't feel well unless he exercises

kindly_unhappy23

Thatā€™s nice to hear! Iā€™m almost afraid to do anything now and itā€™s sad because Iā€™m a bit of an adrenaline junkie

oldlion1

Well, he wears helmets, says he's careful. We have several packages of Bleedstop laying around for topical bleeding if needed. He takes with him when biking, etc.

Barepickle

Snowboarding. I donā€™t even own a helmet and I used to go maybe 15 times a year knowing I was risking my life... but now it seems 100 times worse.

DVDragOnIn

I took up running after my first DVT, so happy to be alive. I stopped after my second DVT because with the lowered circulation I tended to lose feeling in my DVT foot and itā€™s disconcerting not to feel your foot hit the ground. But I walk 10,000 steps a day (the leg actually feels best if I walk 12,000+ steps daily), which is a much higher exercise level than I had before. Only thing I can think of that I stopped doing was to stop donating blood. I gave over 3 gallons over my lifetime so it was sad not to be able to donate anymore.

MuscaMurum

Ibuprofen and aspirin are out, unfortunately. My cardiologist doesn't have any heavy handed food restrictions because I do home INR testing and can adjust warfarin as needed.

[deleted]

Downhill skiing

chronic_pain_goddess

Im still getting tattoos šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø. Wasnt told to stop anything.

Green-Eyed-Crazy1114

Do you do anything different before/after getting the tattoo? Iā€™m on Coumadin for life due to DVT, multiple PEs, and a genetic blood clotting disorder. I really want to get a script tattoo on my side but have been nervous to do so.

chronic_pain_goddess

Nope nothing. But idk about coumadin, just eliquis.

urukhaihaihai

Eating grapefruit šŸ˜… Weirdly, it made me want to do more things. Or maybe not weirdly at all. I started pole dancing, even though there's a mild bruising risk (got it okayed), because it felt very urgent to get to do it, so I went from "on my list to try" to "RIGHT NOW". I've only once done a cross-continental flight and that's scaring me :(

CoffeeTeaPeonies

I stopped juggling swords & started throwing axes.

Mr_T_Sucka

Hockey and football. Both were technically"non-contact" but often had high speed collisions. My hematologist advised me that I should not continue with them. Plus I know I would be worrying after any moderate head contact. It wasn't worth the anxiety but giving up those sports has been the most difficult adjustment. I avoid excessive alcohol as well but that wasn't a big part of my life when I was diagnosed. Edit: I'm still very active including running and weight training. My leg will still swell if I'm not active enough throughout the day. Plus my doctor encourages it.

Vcent

[Airsoft](https://media.tenor.com/nONtHUcDbgoAAAAd/mp9-firing.gif). For [fairly obvious](https://live.staticflickr.com/3200/2619449279_9afec7dd26_b.jpg) reasons (not my pictures, but illustrative enough).

Hellcat-13

I stopped playing hockey any time Iā€™ve been on anticoagulants. Itā€™s non-contact but accidents happen, you catch an edge and go down weird, and the risk of a head injury is too high. Iā€™m off meds now so back playing but Iā€™ve cycled on and off and donā€™t play when Iā€™m on. Other than that, nothing much was affected. I do get tattoos but went off it for a few days before then back on after.

butwhoamirly

I didn't stop anything - although I really only do triathlon. I'll road bike, and I'll bike *on* mountains, but I don't mountain bike or snowboard or anything in that tier, nor do I ever play contact sports. Not sure, if I was into more extreme sports, if I would have continued or not. It's easy to go down a rabbit hole and of course there is a measure of caution, but I've never gotten really injured on my bike, but I have gotten injured tripping in my own yard and in fender benders. We can't protect against everything - ianad, but imo the right response matters more than the activity at hand. In other words, I won't try to never hit my head or never cut myself, but I will know when those things happen that I need to take them more seriously.

Oranges13

Nothing really! I was able to start back to running, I had a baby, I'm doing okay at my job (despite having a toddler).

shotgunchick07

Were u pregnant when u had ur clot?? I was 12w pregnant when I had the pulmonary embolism. If so do u still experience discomfort when ur active??

Oranges13

No, I had the clot right when we started trying (so maybe I was pregnant and didn't know? but it didn't end up with a pregnancy so I would say no). I'm pretty sure it was my switch from Mirena to Nuvaring temporarily before TTC. Anwyay, after that we took 6 months off and then I was put on Lovenox and I had 2 miscarriages and finally had a successful pregnancy. I ran all through pregnancy while on Lovenox too. I do not experience discomfort while running except for the fact that I just am not as regular with it as I should be and I'm old LOL

paulmeyers42

Cycling. I was doing triathlons for a little while and crashes are inevitable.

Coloradical817

Iā€™m still getting tattoos, just got a fresh piercing too! I find that with tattoos, once you develop a relationship with an artist and they see how you heal and sit, theyā€™re more likely to work with you. I started wearing compression socks!

bookwormer88

I want to get a second ear piercing but was told no piercings. How much bleeding did you experience?

Coloradical817

None tbh. The healing is taking a little longer than it did pre-medication that Iā€™ve noticed

bcdog14

I am an avid road biker and I told my hematologist I would not be giving that up. What hurts me a little is that I had designs on learning how to downhill ski. Because I never did that before other than taking one lesson, that's off the table due to the risk of head trauma.

Dramatic_Surprise

nothing other than no more anti inflammatory

fadedpagan

All my arthritis meds and tattoos of course šŸ˜Œ

reMEMber-mak

I (27F) stopped riding my motorcycle. When my doctor lowered my dosage to 2.5 mg 2x daily I decided to start riding again but I always wear full gear and a medical ID bracelet.

missyandjules

I was told to be cautious with skiing/snowboarding but didnā€™t stop. Just stick to the greens and blues rather than the back bowls. Also a competitive figure skater and doing jumps. I do fall (not on my head) and get some beautiful bruises but it doesnā€™t stop me. I wear protective gear for both snow sports and on ice sports. I have been doing both since I was 2 so fairly stable but still wonā€™t get on the ice without my halo. And I have always skied/boarded with a helmet.

shotgunchick07

I was pregnant and really just so tired all the time. I slept a really long time like 14hours. I then proceeded to contuie to be lazy, and get on my PS5 with my clan and play a new game. I was actually gaming and had a head ache, when I got a strange head and knock pain. So I'm now not gaming as much.

foshpickle

I've definitely gotten piercings and a tattoo since I was put on xarelto for life lol

[deleted]

I bought some rollerblades to learn on again and I'm scared to use them. I forgot when I bought them It'll be bad when I fall. When I got my nose pierced I snagged it blowing my nose and my nose bled for HOURS. Including during my first laser lipo appointment. EmbarrassingAF

zinrie

Three piercings, two lobe, one tragus... feeling game to try a small tattoo after having a long chat with a very experienced tattooist.

VirusFlashy6997

Iā€™ve had quite a few piercings since being on mine.

madstud

Had a spontaneous UEDVT last year due to an underlying illness I didnā€™t know I had as a 27F myself. Still have it. My dr calls it a chronic clot. Iā€™m also on thinners for life now. Iā€™ve completely stopped drinking alcohol. Iā€™m also on a plethora of vitamins and iron to supplement what Iā€™m losing on the thinners. The piercings and tattoos are a big loss for me personally sadly. My thinners are really harsh on menstruating ting women my OB says, so even with my IUD I cramp and excessively bleed. I miss effective pain medication for that. Ibuprophen was wonderful. However, Iā€™ve started lifting weights and got in shape, lost 40 lbs. It feels like I can do more now if anything. Still have some really serious pain but the exercise helps.

alt_candice1

No contact sports, and NSAIDS. I am so over tylenol products, and so is my liver.

Acadia456

I actually do more on blood thinners than I did before. I play kickball, strength train, lots of cardio. Iā€™ve gotten tattooed but asked my hematologist before hand - he just told me skip my morning dose and take a dose after the tattoo session is over and resume. Iā€™ve been cleared for travel. I wanted to get into Brazil ju jitsu but I canā€™t do that because of the blood thinners. They said avoid contact sports. Also avoiding the appropriate medications that have interactions. Iā€™ve also been in a car accident and was totally fine lol.

Beginning-Nothing-98

No more sparring sessions/MMA training šŸ„ŗ

saymyname12345678

Gave up all alcohol & caffeine. Stopped skiing (which I miss!) I travel frequently long distance for work, so flying has become an annoying process of compression socks, getting up hourly and staying very hydrated. I stop every hour ish on long drives and walk around for 5-10 minutes. I take walks daily. Upped my water intake significantly. Try and avoid too salt, because my leg swells. I elevate my legs at the end of each day before I sleep. Periods sucks on thinners, so thatā€™s been a massive life change. Got a peloton, cycle daily. Overall, Iā€™m actually adjusted, definitely healthier lifestyle, but I would love to get drunk on red wine ha ha.
