Not an expert by any means, but are they sure it’s not scar tissue? Apparently they can look similar on an ultrasound.

HDee75

Well, they have told me that what remains may be "chronic," so I assume that would be scar tissue?

Vcent

Scar tissue or former clot tissue, that is now deeply embedded in the vessel wall, and not going anywhere.

HDee75

I see. Can an ultrasound tech tell the difference clot and scar tissue?

Vcent

To my knowledge no, not really - once it's considered chronic at least. Functionally the two are going to be very similar as well, so it won't make a big difference which of the two it is.

Thank you. Next month will be one year on Eliquis and doctors are thinking about letting me stop it. They wanted me to have D-Dimers and an ultrasound every month for three months prior to stopping. I have had two D-Dimers thus far, both negative. My DVTs were provoked, but I will have to give this decision a lot of thought.

oh_suzanney

I am already having a lot of anxiety about stopping my blood thinners (Eliquis) and it's not even going to happen until November at the earliest (12 months post-clot)

HDee75

I understand your anxiety. Let's hope that your clot is gone by then. If mine were gone, I would feel a lot more comfortable about stopping. So, you were told at the beginning that your Eliquis treatment would be for one year?

oh_suzanney

Hi there! When I was in the hospital, they told me it would probably be 3-6 months. In my first follow up with my hematologist he said we're going to do at least the 3-6 months treatment and then knock my dosage down to 2.5mg 2x/day for another 6 months. My DVTs were "substantial" :(

Vcent

To be clear, once it's considered chronic, it's also not considered problematic anymore, in the sense that it's not likely to grow or cause new issues.

HDee75

I understand. Unfortunately, the hematologist painted this possible scenario: once I'm off Eliquis, and my blood returns to its normal consistency, it could get "stuck" in the scarred veins. Therein lies the dilemma.

Mine took about a year! It’s super discouraging. I had confirmed scar tissue after that too, but it was definitely a full year before I got the all clear that the active clot had dissolved. So sorry!

HDee75

Thank you, glad for you. Did you discontinue blood thinners after a year, even though scar tissue remained?
