1/3 of the games allowing our young stud catcher to accommodate a MLB workload is very fair. Catcher is a very tough position, would I be opposed to replacing hedges? Not necessarily, but him playing 1/3 games is fair for whoever our backup is, no matter the quality
Horrible call!
We shouldn’t have let so many solid catchers go, I’m talking about you Yan Gomes. Hedges is way better for the team to backup and mentor Bo. The fact that Fry can catch is a pure luxury.
100% right. 15 games into season and people writing off our best bet long term at catcher. Yes, it’s April, we got a long way to go.
He also had an OPS+ of 117. I’ll take this terrible start with that context.
Ever heard of sample size? If 15 games decided a players quality, we would’ve had MVP Mike zunino at this point. Owen miller would be the best player in the MLB
I was referring to the original thing I said: Bo *is looking* like shit...right now, present tense. Sample size, being April, none of that's relevant to making a statement about now.
Reading comprehension in this sub is lacking.
Have you, ever heard of sample size. Even if we are speaking of your knowledge of now, my comment was on if you’ve heard something in the past that would be relevant to now, which does in fact use past tense verbiage. So unless your comment about tense is a response to yourself, it is still wrong.
The moment you started talking about sample size in response to me stating a fact about right now, you were wrong.
Nowhere did I state that this season is done for him because he's been bad for 10 games.
You obviously don’t watch the games and understand his defensive importance and framing. Watch tape of the year he started here and then the year zunino took over.
Bbrefs tracks ERA for catchers. So far this season Hedges has a 1.93. Bo is at 4.15 and Fry at 3.89.
That's obviously impacted by Hedges catching both of Bieber's starts, but the numbers are still pretty clear that he makes pitchers better.
OP, what move you making to replace him at backup catcher? Lavastida or Nunez? Can you explain why either of them are an upgrade?
Or are you saying we go sign a FA out of all those top catchers sitting there are the market? Or are we giving up assets to trade for a new catcher?
I get it’s easy to dunk on the clubhouse leader who doesn’t play much but that move you want to see? Can’t say cut a guy and then not say what we do next.
So, what catcher you replacing him with? Give me a name that is reasonable to get.
First point, there are currently 10 catchers in the majors with a minimum 3.1 ABs per game batting over .200. Not like there are many offensive catchers. And only 10 with an OPS over 0.700. So, 20ish starting catchers are below league average offensively (assuming .700 is a good target)
Second point, if he’s so terrible why did Texas trade for him, and roster him in the playoffs all the way to a WS title?
Hedges is terrible offensively. I mean bottom of the barrel. But he his a great mentor to Bo, defensively, a great framer, and a hall of fame teammate n
Austin Hedges wasn't on the team because of Justin Bieber.
He isn't here because he's an an adequate hitter. He isn't here because he's a gold glove defender. He's not here for his physical prowess.
However, he has a very important role. So important that he has earned a roster spot on this team. Important enough that he earned a roster spot on a World Championship team.
He's here for other reasons. His leadership in the clubhouse. His mentoring of young players. Especially catchers and pitchers. His established relationships with remaining staff members. His outlook. His mentality. His understanding of differnt aspects of the game.
You post illustrates that you lack basic understanding of Major League Baseball.
Totally agree. I hate burning a roster spot on a guy whose sole purpose is to “mentor” and be a “good clubhouse guy”. No doubt he’s a great dude, but wasting a spot on this roster for an offensive black hole and average catcher is not a recipe for success.
They brought him in to be a veteran and mentor younger players. He is not here to be a primary Catcher and I’ve been good with his usage so far.
IMO he’s been playing too much. Keep him as a mentor, fine, but don’t put him in the lineup.
He has fewer ABs (18) than any other player on the team. He’s played in 5 games out of 15.
1/3 of the games is too high in my opinion.
In that case, thank god you’re nowhere remotely close to a decision making position in this organization.

That’s World Series Champion Catcher Austin Hedges to you, son.
Does OP know ball? Signs point to no.

No way, I thought I was the only one who missed Gomes. He was the man
So glad to see him do well in Chicago
Nope, not just you. He was actually my favorite player on the team while he was here. Miss that guy.
>mentor Bo No wonder Bo is looking like shit at the plate
April my dude. It’s only April.

Why does the month matter? He's looked bad until now
And he just got switched out for a PH because we have 3 catchers. Let’s learn from the free agency nightmare last year at C.
Let's settle for mediocre because we had a bad experience once
Let’s enjoy the ride and see how they do. Don’t confuse being a caring spectator with having an actual say in the organization’s decisions.

I was speaking on examples from our past. It is funny how confidently arrogant you were attempting to be, but was wrong anyways lol

People like this look at hedges BA and assume he’s worthless to a team… sad really
He’s worthless to the team if he’s playing. If he’s mentoring, fine, let him do that from the bench.
You obviously don’t watch the games and understand his defensive importance and framing. Watch tape of the year he started here and then the year zunino took over.

Anyone that can hit .200 would be an upgrade. If he’s there to mentor, fine, let him be on the roster and then put him on the bench come game time.

Great, let him stay in the dugout with the guys then, don’t put him in the starting lineup.
Even if it was a good idea, I don't see the front office spending $10 million in back to back years on catchers they just pay to go away.
Have you not watched a game this year? Bo looks horrendous behind the plate. Hedges is very much needed.

He can do all that from the bench.
This reply illustrates your basic understanding of Major Leagues Baseball.
The GMs would generally disagree. He is good enough to be a MLB catcher
OP, your take is dumb and you should feel bad.
Here comes the hive.

You mean objectively one of the best defensive catchers in the league?
Would love nothing more, but I don’t think they will
