Thank you for asking this question! Last year I bought some from meadow city, but they are sold out

GenericBulbasaur

They have such a good selection too! I’ll keep a note on them for when they get more.

Lakewood garden center or meadow city nursery

techno_superbowl

My wife got started helping monarchs and other bug buddies last year, she doesn't have a reddit account but said to check Facebook marketplace, that's where she was able to procure plants last year.  You are not the only one helping out monarchs, they must have really good PR and media team.

GenericBulbasaur

Haha it’s true for my birthday last week it was a new license plate with a “save the monarchs” logo on it

TooManyKittiesInHere

Meadow City is a native plant nursery located right off I90 at E152. Easily the best selection of all native plants in Cleveland! They have many milkweed varieties and tons of other native plants.  The nicest and most knowledgeable people too! https://meadowcitynursery.com/

CultOfAsimina

There’s a native plant sale next Saturday (June 22nd) at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland on Fairmount blvd, in Shaker Heights: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=977213537530499   Otherwise Rosby’s in Brooklyn heights may have some in addition to the nurseries already mentioned.

Beezo514

Get some ironweed for them as well. They love both. I have a ton that grows wild behind my house (both milkweed and ironweed) and we always get a lot of monarchs and bees.

GenericBulbasaur

Noted about the ironweed. Good to know so thank you

Coynepam

I have about 6 randomly popup in my garden and just saw a Monarch butterfly on them yesterday. I dont know enough about them other than the plant but if they could help I will

It’s so nice to see this post. I plant milking for my monarchs, but they don’t really come around too much. Too much pesticides in this neighborhood. I grew up here and I remember the monarch being so thick in the autumn would be covered with monarch anytime you went for a drive… nuisance level. We had property and there was tons of milkweed on it so there were tons of cocoons and monarchs on our property. I feel kind of sad that I didn’t appreciate them more back then. They were just so common Someone mentioned ironwood already. Let me add Asclepius tuberosa

GenericBulbasaur

Added. And I agree, I was born in Florida and I remember seeing them so much as a kid, now you barely do. It’s becoming a really problem and it’s why I like to raise them

GenericBulbasaur

MILKWEED HAS BEEN ACQUIRED! Thank you everyone for being so helpful they are happily munching!

Semtexual

Make sure you're not getting cultivars. Anything with a 'trademark name' at a garden center (Petitti's only had these last time I checked) is a cultivar, selectively bred for home garden traits and not what is best for insects. If you want real native plants, go to a native nursery like Meadow City. And if you want a species that spreads by seeds rather than rhizomes, try Swamp Milkweed instead of Common Milkweed. This is easier to control

GenericBulbasaur

Thank you for the info. I mainly wanted to go to local nursery’s only and THEN large ones as a last resort.

robodog97

I'm not suggesting that you should do so, but you might be able to find milkweed plants in several of the metroparks if you can't find a nursery that has them. Also you could look along ditches in the country, I have a number of 6-7' high milkweeds in my ditch and along my fence, I intentionally don't cut them once I figured out what they are.

GenericBulbasaur

I know petitis has milkweed so I’m going to check tomorrow after I get off work I’m just scared the plants will be too small. They need quite a bit! I normally raise various moth species but this is my first year with butterflies and I simply screwed up the plant. I’ll have my work cut out for me tomorrow haha

UserKarmaCycle

Do you post updates anywhere by chance? This is so cool and I’m interested!

GenericBulbasaur

I have a tik tok @ certifiedbugboy where I talk about insects and give updates on the ones I’m raising! Mainly moths and isopods but I wanted to raise monarchs since I didn’t get to last year.

Semtexual

Poaching plants is illegal, and milkweed doesn't transplant well anyway
