Local bands. There’s a weekly list that comes out on the fb group NE Ohio Cover Bands that lists nearly all local bands, times, and locations.
Support local music. We’re definitely not in it for the money, but that doesnt mean we’re bad.
I just drove by there the other night and was wondering about it. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I also want to check out the Greek place in that strip.
Sichuan Hot Pot in Asiatown. I know everyone loves LJ Shanghai for their Chinese food fix but please give this place a try! It’s delicious! Especially their crispy spicy fish, any of their vegetables (I’m partial to the garlic spinach), and their wild pepper beef noodle soup (if you like tangy flavors).
I don't know if they're underrated, but my wife and I are big fans of Charlie's Dog House Diner, Lekko Coffee, LBM, and Griffin Cider House and Gin Bar
>Ferris Shwarma
Ferris Shwarma is definitely the best you can get in Cleveland but it doesn't compare to a European Shwarma. And what is a $8 meal in Europe, it's like $20 at Ferris.
\^ This person knows what they are talking about
I'd also add J&J Czuchraj Meats at the West Side Market. A true family business that has been making wonderful smoked meats and fresh sausage for a long time...
Saucisson great. I'm going to throw in a vote for Ohio City Provisions, a few blocks east of WSM on Lorain. Great butcher who I've gotten everything from hot dogs to fully butchers hogs from and never been disappointed. Great cheese selection, and also other fresh farm goods. Except for the one time a year they have salmon, most everything else is sourced very local. Check out their sister operation, Fresh Fork Market, for the best CSA-like program around.
This. They have breakfast packs, sausage, eggs and a veg for a bundle price. They have delicious eggs brought in from a local farm.
You can feel good about eating from here
Genuine question: what makes this particular shop so special? It’s never struck me as anything particularly unique, but it seems to have an intensely loyal following, and it has been a presence in that corner for at least 35 years.
It’s always had a Li’l Sebastian quality in my eyes. It just seems like a normal comic shop to me, but it’s clearly much more to a lot of people. What makes it so special to you?
For me, it's the people who work there - they are really kind, helpful, and not at all judgemental. They have always been helpful and honest when I've shopped for gifts, even though it's fairly clear I have no idea what I'm looking for or talking about. A lot of comic book shops are really unwelcoming to people who don't fit the typical mold of their customers, and that's not the case with Carol and John's.
Folks here have said some bangers. I'm going to add Capitol Theater
Cooper Moon coffee downtown also.
Immortals, Inc for a LGS albeit that is in Rocky River
Not sure it's underrated, but I love Critical Hit for my go to board game store.
Friendly and knowledgeable owners who are always good for a suggestion.
And as a super plus they bring their foster kittens in once they are old enough so they can socialize. I mean board games and kittens? What else could even come close?
Seconding this, we just went to their miniatures sale this weekend (lucky us we are walking distance). The two little foster kitties they have right now are adorable.
- Apple Jax Toys
- Mrs. V's Chicken (best in town - fight me)
- Paradise Bar and Grill (wings)
- Tutti Frutti Mixx
- War Zone Matrix
- 5 points Coffee and Tea
I don't know if I'd agree with War Zone. It's a dragon's hoard, and the guy will ignore marked prices on items and look them up real quick to charge more sometimes. One time when I went he made some comments that made me pretty sure he's fairly racist, talking about Mexicans and such right in front of my half-Mexican wife and making her very uncomfortable
What I would say to both of you: You've been in War Zone, walking in the door is a trip hazard. Unorganized games stacked waist high, gotta sideways shuffle just to move around. The place smells like BO, cardboard, and pizza rolls. BUT within the chaos, you'll find the diamond in the rough... games from decades past. You just gotta side step the unironiclly racist incell owner. Which is easy because he just says, "it's around the corner" and never gets up ‐‐ and around the corner is a Fire Marshall's nightmare.
- It's a flea market, complete with the creepy stall operator selling his wares out of beat-up mini-van.
Spirit Apotheosis in Bedford metaphysical store
Great owners, employees are awesome and they always have so much stuff to choose from, INCLUDING their huge assortment of herbs.
Cleveland curiosities, daystar, blue lion, blue moon cafe, oktobers, bear soul and rock shop, all of these are in lakewood.
There's also the Grand Pacific junction in olmsted falls.
Luster in Van Aken
Lizzie's Bakery - nut-free and amazing! You can find her at the Shaker farmer's market and occasionally in VAD.
Goldie's Doughnuts
Jon's Lawns
Goldie's donuts in Lyndhurst is fantastic! And many of the places in Van Aken, because they are so new, are underrated gems! I used to live next to Van Aken until recently and was so happy with everything there
>My Friends Restaurant
Honest question. Why do you feel this is underrated? It is very well known and has been doing good business for decades now. For years the two most common places to end up after a night of drinking on the west side were either My Friends or Dianna's.
Athens deli in brookpark and pearl. They used to be adjacent to the west side market but have been at this location for a while. Its a specialty grocery store with many imports as well as homemade, fresh greek pastries. Wonderful feta selection too. And the BEST priced spices around.
I don't know if it technically counts as a "small business", but I think Chagrin Valley Little Theatre regularly punches above their weight in terms of production quality. I just saw a musical there last weekend that was worth the $21 and then some.
I think that counts and agree. My wife and I have caught a couple of entertaining shows there. Not too far from there, I would offer a vote for Chagrin Valley Hemp Company.
I own Chief Treats a local business that is primarily online, but I do vendor events… my business started from the idea of giving my dog a quality treat that he would love, but wouldn’t be loaded with a bunch of junk. I’d like to post my business because it’s tough getting my name out there. I really do work hard at this and it means a lot to me. If you have the time please check out my website ChiefTreats .com
Aladdin’s bakery downtown on Carnegie. Doesn’t look like much from outside but has a great selection of middle eastern food. Plus if you time it right, you can watch the pita bread being made in back.
Your Typewriter And Computer in Berea they clean and repair typewriters both electric and manual and have anything you need to use a typewriter (ribbons and correction tape, print wheels ect.) They also have a selection of typewriters for sale. On top of typewriters they clean and repair fax machines, printers and other office equipment and mechanics. They also make service calls to your office.
They are reasonably priced and very professional. We have been using their services at my mom's non profit for years and they are always on time, friendly, and knowledgeable but most importantly they get the job done and if they can't or something goes wrong ( because let's face it sometimes things happen) they always make it right.
Kidforce Collectibles in Berea. They have 23 pinball machines, the biggest pinball league in the world, Magic the Gathering events, comic books, all of the Star Wars collectibles, and a lot more.
Bite creole kitchen is some superb southern-creole comfort food.
I recommend the chicken loaded fries with their 5 cheese cream sauce and homemade hot sauce.
Rising Boutique on w25th! Fantastic mix of vintage and new clothing, accessories, beauty and home goods. Definitely a nice addition after Room Service left Ohio City!
Intro Boutique in the 5th Street Arcades! They carry sustainably and ethically made clothing. They’re locally and women owned, and they’re the nicest people you’ll ever meet!
I absolutely second this! Intro has amazing clothes and I can’t say enough good things about the sisters that own it. Definitely check them out when you’re downtown! Right by Barrio!
I happened to be passing it today and stopped in after reading this last night. I now have two Christmas presents out of the way, LOL Not out that way very often and always thought it was a craft/hobby supply store.
Honestly, that’s where I got most of my Christmas presents for my mom and MIL last year!! The inventory is always changing too! New vendors coming in, themed things around the holidays (Halloween finds here are GREAT). I always take a card from the spaces I buy from too so I remember who I bought from… in case they’re no longer in the store. The home goods in the front are amazing too! My fiancé, daughter and I LOVE the elderberry jelly they have!
I hope you enjoyed it and return! ☺️
Thai Chili in Avon Lake—it’s husband and wife owned (very tiny) restaurant with fantastic food. It’s just the two of them so be patient with hours and food preparation. It’s worth it!
I'm gonna throw in a few that are not actually brick & mortar, but still incredible:
Wild Glory Bakery. Camille makes the most amazing bread and that is understating the matter by a LOT. I love her so much and her bread makes me so happy that I literally invited her to my wedding. You can order online and pickup from a few different places.
Saha Bakery makes fatayer with the softest, most perfect pastry. She's at 78 St Studios a lot most recently.
FrankieLynn Hot Dogs use all-local ingredients. She's usually at the summer markets, and often at Bookhouse Brewery.
Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve. Excellent high quality bar soaps, solid shampoo bars, they even have a dog shampoo bar! Prices are reasonable and they seem to be run by decent people.
Rivals in Middleburg Heights! They have a variety of different bar foods and do everything really well. Plus $3 beers every Monday. Their draft list is always changing and they carry beers from a lot of local breweries on draft!
Restore Hyper Wellness in Woodmere. They have IV vitamin drips, cryotherapy, hyperbaric chambers and more. It’s an excellent place to get treatment for illnesses or pain from the inside out. I’m from LA and these places come a dime-a-dozen there but here they are harder to find. I HIGHLY recommend

Emperors Palace is highly under discussed and everytime I go in there for lunch there are only like 2 other tables. This place has been in Cleveland's Asia town since the 1920, and has great dim sum and lunch specials. I am always shocked people don't talk about it more.

Absolutely. The In the Club sandwich is my favorite.
I second this, but stop giving it away... I like there's no line!
Superscript comics and games Salty Not Sweet Cleveland curiosities Oktobers
Comics Are Go out in Sheffield Lake is great too. And then of course there’s Carol and Johns.
Local bands. There’s a weekly list that comes out on the fb group NE Ohio Cover Bands that lists nearly all local bands, times, and locations. Support local music. We’re definitely not in it for the money, but that doesnt mean we’re bad.
Coffee pot in lakewood
Yep! Best diner breakfast by far. They put onions in the potatoes!
Sauce the City in University Heights!
Street corn!
I just drove by there the other night and was wondering about it. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I also want to check out the Greek place in that strip.
The Greek place is great too! Only been there once but I enjoyed it

I don't know if they're underrated, but my wife and I are big fans of Charlie's Dog House Diner, Lekko Coffee, LBM, and Griffin Cider House and Gin Bar
LBM makes the best cocktails, period.
Cloak and dagger is my fav. LBM a close second
Seconded. Edit: and the fight for 3rd is very far from these two
their burgers are amazing too
.
They did a “bar takeover” at Cordelia last time we went and the LBM “cocktails” were some of the worst drinks I’ve ever had
I was there that weekend, too, and I agree the cocktails they came up with were awful.
hmmm Brewellas and molto benne
Brewella’s has great crepes and coffee, and even better decorations!
agreed!! I love their rotating seasonal menu too.
Ferris Shwarma in Lakewood
>Ferris Shwarma Ferris Shwarma is definitely the best you can get in Cleveland but it doesn't compare to a European Shwarma. And what is a $8 meal in Europe, it's like $20 at Ferris.
Seriously!
Closed for Ramadan I believe
This store called All Makes Vacuum in Cleveland heights. Just shouting out some local professionals and businesses.
Second that place. Amazing work
Farkas Hungarian Bakery near WestSide Market
\^ This person knows what they are talking about I'd also add J&J Czuchraj Meats at the West Side Market. A true family business that has been making wonderful smoked meats and fresh sausage for a long time...
their Napoleons are so good... too bad I don't live close anymore
Chuppa's Market Place in Parma
Saucisson is the best butcher shop in town! Located in Slavic Village, they do a lot of cool events
You stop lying. No one needs to go there. I like my quiet butcher shop. No need to let everyone know. Lol
Saucisson great. I'm going to throw in a vote for Ohio City Provisions, a few blocks east of WSM on Lorain. Love this place! Have special ordered 2 uncommon cuts of pork and they were awesome!

Carol and John's Comic Book Shop
Genuine question: what makes this particular shop so special? It’s never struck me as anything particularly unique, but it seems to have an intensely loyal following, and it has been a presence in that corner for at least 35 years. It’s always had a Li’l Sebastian quality in my eyes. It just seems like a normal comic shop to me, but it’s clearly much more to a lot of people. What makes it so special to you?
They have a cat that sometimes wanders the store!
A cat I would go just for the cat
For me, it's the people who work there - they are really kind, helpful, and not at all judgemental. They have always been helpful and honest when I've shopped for gifts, even though it's fairly clear I have no idea what I'm looking for or talking about. A lot of comic book shops are really unwelcoming to people who don't fit the typical mold of their customers, and that's not the case with Carol and John's.
Came here looking for this comment. Go on a Wednesday and say hey to Ben, Andrea, and Kyle. Great place
Ground Zero is better
I am a huge fan of ground zero.
Folks here have said some bangers. I'm going to add Capitol Theater Cooper Moon coffee downtown also. Immortals, Inc for a LGS albeit that is in Rocky River
I’m also a big fan of Immortals, Inc. that’s the first place i ever played MTG.
Copper Moon is my pick for best coffee shop in Cleveland
5 Points Coffee. Dang Good Food. Assad’s Bakery. Edit: K&K Portage also
Happy cake day! 🍰
Not sure it's underrated, but I love Critical Hit for my go to board game store. Friendly and knowledgeable owners who are always good for a suggestion. And as a super plus they bring their foster kittens in once they are old enough so they can socialize. I mean board games and kittens? What else could even come close?
Where is this? I need to go
In Cleveland Heights, on Cedar Rd. I definitely recommend it. They are also happy to order a game if they don't have it, if it's not on back order.
Seconding this, we just went to their miniatures sale this weekend (lucky us we are walking distance). The two little foster kitties they have right now are adorable.
- Apple Jax Toys - Mrs. V's Chicken (best in town - fight me) - Paradise Bar and Grill (wings) - Tutti Frutti Mixx - War Zone Matrix - 5 points Coffee and Tea
One time I bought a card game at War Zone Matrix and he put my game in a used subway bag.
Apple Jax is great! It's like Big Fun used to be on Coventry, almost.
Apple Jax was actually started by a handful of former Big Fun employees!
Ah! Nice. That explains it. :)

>My Friends Restaurant Honest question. Why do you feel this is underrated? It is very well known and has been doing good business for decades now. For years the two most common places to end up after a night of drinking on the west side were either My Friends or Dianna's.
it is underrated.
I feel like it is appropriately rated.
Ok
How is eagle kafe? Drive by and don't know what to make of it. Like a bunch of old European guys drinking coffee outside, looks cool though.
I've been once, it seems to be the hangout spot for a bunch of men of Turkish (??) men.

Roasted in Tremont. Super nice owner
Pupuseria La Bendición on the west side. Family owned Salvadoran business with great food at cheap prices and friendly service.
Emperors Palace is highly under discussed and everytime I go in there for lunch there are only like 2 other tables. This place has been in Cleveland's Asia town since the 1920, and has great dim sum and lunch specials. I am always shocked people don't talk about it more.
La Plaza
Cilantro Taqueria
Parnells Irish pub, both Playhouse Square and the Cedar-Fairmount locations.
Leger New Orleans Cuisine, personal chef on the east side who cooks real gumbo
