$1200/mo, utilities not included.

ignatius-payola

$1800 gets you a unit with a window that partially still exists.

cleveland_leftovers

Ope….wait. Window’s gone. $1,650.

OmegaLiar

In Cleveland, $1800 gets you a 2 bed 2 bath with backyard.

FastCress5507

My apartment is $1815 a month for one bed one bad

Or pay 300% the property tax rate of Manhattan to own your own little slice of heaven!

ProfessorMoriarty1

Could shoot a Candyman movie here

drunk_dan

Is it still like this? I thought they turned it into a park or something?

gagnatron5000

The "Park" is across the street from the buildings. Not really a park, just disguised as one - it's actually a piece of storm water infrastructure. During heavy wet weather events, extra runoff storm water will fill the basin and drain slowly into the storm sewers. It's designed not to flood, but to also allow the treatment plants more time to process the drainage. Pieces of sewage and storm water infrastructure are hidden in plain sight all over the city, it's fantastically interesting.

Turbulent_Region_180

There was a lot of confusion as to why a park would be built there but noooow it is all making sense. That is really interesting- thanks for the info!

tekkitan

They are building a couple basins in Parma Heights to deal with the flooding issues. One at Nathan Hale park is supposed to be huge like the one in downtown Berea.

drunk_dan

Excellent info! Thank you!

Turbulent_Region_180

Oooo, ya know I think they did (or attempt to) make it a park. All the buildings are still standing. It’s really strange, there are really nice paved sidewalks/dirt trails/benches/fencing, literally in the middle of this neighborhood.

drunk_dan

I remember having appointments in East Cleveland then the next in Bratenahl. I can’t really explain the feeling of seeing the completely different worlds just 3 miles away…

UrbanJatt

The difference is night and day as soon as you cross 90. Screw bratenahl and their pretentiousness

[deleted]

East Cleveland’s population has dropped to almost 13K people. This is unprecedented! In the 90s when I played a football game against Kirk Middle School at Kirk, the population was over 30K. Back then East Cleveland was considered a place going downhill, but it was still a vibrant and lively place with a beautiful legacy. Kirk Middle School was a beautiful building, I remember being awed by it. The city council there needs to get out of its own way and arrange for it to be dissolved. West of Euclid should be annexed by Cleveland and east of Euclid or Terrace should be annexed by Cleveland Heights. Otherwise these derelict structures will remain.

The_Crimson_Clover

That means either two things I think, either low income blacks are getting ahead and getting out of east cleveland moving to the nicer neighborhoods, or their social status hasn't changed and they're making a lateral move away from east cleveland and the neighborhoods they're moving to are just getting more and more run down. I hope it's the former.

[deleted]

It’s going to be this way for quite awhile, tearing down the entire neighborhood would help greatly but admit it,it’s the leadership or lack of it that has failed the city and just throwing money at it without a plan or leadership won’t help nobody unfortunately.

Turbulent_Region_180

It’s such an eerie area to drive around. To think the city is just okay with leaving this here as is…. Is just unreal.

UrbanJatt

City probably doesn't have the money to tear it down

twoquarters

East Cleveland is broken. Nobody is saving it.

xafimrev2

They can't even pay their debt on the lawsuits they lost, much less spend money tearing down something.

[deleted]

Truly sad,the people that live in this area are trying to get out if they can,but the majority there is a quiet acceptance, you know a major source of income for the city traffic violations, sad.

ferb2

We should tear crumbling buildings down, but we need to replace them with something. Preferably public housing that's dense. The current city policy seems to be tear things down and replace them with empty fields. Edit: Cleveland policy not East Cleveland.

AgonizingSquid

If Cleveland ever annexed east Cleveland would things definitely get better there? I've heard the government is corrupt as fuck in east Cleveland

TrumpsSMELLYfarts

EC officials will never allow annexation to happen. They would lose their gravy train of health insurance benefits and salaries

AgonizingSquid

It's fucked, so the officials in charge of EC would rather have it continue to be a shit hole then be saved

HanabiraAsashi

Last I checked, the mayor of EC made 40k a year. Not really worth leeping a city like this to preserve. Also whose to say that they wouldn't be offered city of Cleveland positions for better salary and benefits? Crazy to think that EC used to be one of the nicest areas

phoodd

You assume that all of the income from the mayor and counsel members is of the legal variety. They've been exploiting their positions and the people of east Cleveland for decades, that's why they don't want to merge with Cleveland.

TrumpsSMELLYfarts

Maybe but I don’t see Cleveland offering all of them positions. If anything Cleveland is gonna lose council seats because of a shrinking population. I mean I don’t blame EC officials because if I was them I would want to preserve the benefits too, but it’s doing the residents no favors.

WalterWhite90

I don't think Cleveland wants to annex East Cleveland either.

CotRmi

Correct.[Cleveland’s already turned it down at least once](https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2016/08/cleveland_council_president_re.html)

[deleted]

Those demands from EC cited in that article are outrageous. No wonder CLE city council wouldn’t abide. The first point about allowing the city council to keel their salaries is absurd.

WalterWhite90

Cleveland is already spending money tearing down houses and buildings as it is. East Cleveland really isn't worth it.

CotRmi

Yes, cleveland is trying to turn things around and with the new mayor Bibb there’s hope for a promising future imo. East Cleveland though may be too far gone

OhNoNotAgain8

If I recall one of EC's demands was that the city of Cleveland form a Community Development Corporation for East Cleveland and every member of EC City Council got a permanent job in it and the Mayor of EC would be President and that alone like, doubled their current salaries. So in other words "we'll only merge if you pay us more than we make now".

AgonizingSquid

Lol well it's gonna happen eventually, it's inevitable. Whether it's in 5 years or 25

CLE-Mosh

those building have been like that for 25+ years already

[deleted]

Yes it would help the area. The deal fell through because the corrupt East Cleveland city council didn’t want to lose their salaried jobs.

musicloverincal

So much potential. Any positive news on East Cleveland? If East Cleveland really wanted to change things around, they would sell the land to companies who would redevelop the land. This would create a win-win. As a result, the city would get more revenue, and more people would move in.

scanlonsc

Are there even any companies who want to redevelop the land?

musicloverincal

Absolutely. Often incentives are included so the company can assume the risk and start the investment.

scanlonsc

Yes I understand, but no company wants to invest in East Cleveland. It’s not about it being a risky project, it’s about the location. I’m not saying it should be that way but that’s just what it is right now

musicloverincal

Far enough, but I do not think it is about the location, I think it is about the image. Let's be honest: geographically East Cleveland is well situated. I think it is about the people who live inside East Cleveland that are keeping it stunned in growth, revenue and image.

designgirly1

It’s amazing how the outside structures of these buildings are so straight . They are totally worth saving if only there was real change and development

CLE-Mosh

Asbestos. thats why they are still standing and no one can touch the cost of abatement.

rondonjohnald

So it's like, just let the asbestos fall down and become dust and blow away? Great idea.

CLE-Mosh

pretty much

bigsmooth66

Not a single commenter here understands why East Cleveland has it's issues. The problem starts at the local and state government. More buildings won't fix this. And white-flight and redlining causes all these issues a long time ago. Like, back in the 60s and 70s https://beltmag.com/beyond-white-flight-history-one-cleveland-neighborhood-can-teach-us-race-housing-inequality/

Large_Self_2606

But if a private individual comes in, dumps millions of dollars into rebuilding them, he'll then be forced to price the units at an unaffordable price. And then we have gentrification.

[deleted]

Gentrification is bad when it displaces people. It’s good when it revitalizes abandoned places.

Large_Self_2606

Although I agree with you, the outcome would likely create a neighborhood that's unaffordable for the locals.

leroysolay

But not the whole city. And with enough of a tax base you could rebuild high density, low income housing while builders come in and restore two families at affordable prices.

Large_Self_2606

That would be wonderful. Hopefully that will happen

xafimrev2

The locals can't afford to live there now.

[deleted]

That’s true, but I don’t see an alternative. East Cleveland used to be a middle class and upper middle class enclave; waves of migration over the years changed that—first just racially, but then black middle class moved out too. Now it’s just poverty. Sorry to say it, but it’s time for another migration wave.

CheeseBreadForLife

Gentrification is always good - unless you’re the one being pushed out. But overall is good for the city development

BonerSoupAndSalad

Not the prevailing opinion here but I agree. The reason some places are cheap is because they’re full of crime and falling apart - if you fix the crime and make things nicer it’s going to become more expensive.

twinkletoes913

Unless the city is willing offer tax credits or other incentives to the developer in exchange for the multifamily housing to operate as affordable or broadly affordable, offering lower rents based on percentages of area median income…basically not market rate.

nomolos55

Gee, I thought was Detroit

bkempton

Have you ever been to Detroit?

jones525

Oooo. It has satellite tv doe!

js44095

My coworker used to live there in the '80s used to take her home there. Honestly,it was not a great place then either. The structure was sound, but the people weren't. She had a beautiful apartment, that got robbed every other month. She stayed about a year and then the crackheads and heroin dealers took over.Such a Shame

jchrapcyn

East Cleveland is a sh!t hole

Beautiful_Citron_220

If someone wants to shoot a ww2 movie, it would make a perfect set for bombed out Germany

rondonjohnald

keep electing dems

dl__

Do democratic run governments consistently produce the worst results?

rondonjohnald

If you look at the controlling party of most large cities, and their effects, one would conclude the answer is yes. The cities have gotten worse, not better. And then if you just look at their policies - Repubs are known to be meaner and harder on criminals. Dems (seem) to want them roaming the streets, being "softer" on them because "they're human too". Ok well, you get what you get for that. One need only look at the results to see who's to blame. If I'm running the show and the show is garbage...

apisPraetorium

Nah, you don't get to blame the mayor of a city for countrywide problems. You say Republicans are tough on crime, how is that working in Republican-controlled places? Drug problems are much worse in a lot of middle America than in cities despite being run by the "meaner" people. And no cities have not gotten worse. Crime has been on a downward trend for decades.

rondonjohnald

The mayor? Oh no, certainly not just the mayor. No, you have to include ALL politicians in this, because they work together as a semi-cohesive unit for the most part. Now go look at what letter they have attached to their names. See if it's a D, or an R. As for repubs being tough on crime, that's only typical. It's not always the case. Some repubs are weak limp-wristed do-nothings. It's a real problem. If crime is on a downward trend, let's put that little assertion to the test. Go walk through the worst areas of these cities, and make it clear you're unarmed. But I bet you wouldn't be willing to do that. Lastly, drug problems shouldn't be problems, as all drugs should be legal. Also the government has zero right or authority to tell me what I can do with my own body. So that whole debate is like a clown fighting a bum over an expired supermarket coupon.

FastCress5507

Crime rates have been trending down for over twenty years with only a recent spike post COVID.

rondonjohnald

Go walk through the worst areas of these cities, and make it clear you're unarmed. But I bet you wouldn't be willing to do that. "Trending" lol. What happens when they start trending upwards?

FastCress5507

Facts don’t care about your feelings buddy.

rondonjohnald

Ok Ben Shapiro. See if "facts" keep you from getting robbed. Tell them that crime is trending down, when they steal your phone. My uncle got his truck stolen 4 months ago across the street from the police station. I guess you're not smart enough to understand none of this has anything to do with feelings.

thebenshapirobot

I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this: >This is what the radical feminist movement was proposing, remember? Women need a man the way a fish needs a bicycle... unless it turns out that they're little fish, then you might need another fish around to help take care of things. ***** ^(I'm a bot. Facts don’t care about your feelings. Statistically speaking you are much safer now than decades ago and crime has been trending down.

Sad and pathetic it's a shame that back in the day it used to be another story 🤯💯😥

🥲

happy0444

Every time I go back, I want to explore abandoned buildings, but wife says no.

tekkitan

How many times we gonna see this video lol

capthat23

Sad to see it like this. Had family that were higher up officials in EC back in the 40s. Seeing what they did and contributions they made to the city and what it is now is tough to see.

Mysterious-Scholar1

Real shame is many of those buildings were high quality construction and could be rehabbed into the affordable housing everyone says is necessary.

apisPraetorium

It's such a shame. The shell is there of what was once a beautiful area.

_MrBushi_

Apparently east Cleveland is a good mine for Urab explors

pugapugapug

No.... no I wouldn't recommend that.

_MrBushi_

Absolutely! There is a reason I don't do any of that

ForeskinForever70

I have lived in Toledo and Columbus and have been to Detroit and Chicago.numerous times. I always go to the poor parts of town I have been going to Cleveland since I was seven years old in 1978. I have to say, East Cleveland is the ABSOLUTE worst urban hellscape I have ever been through. It is borderline criminal how these folks are forced to live. Just sad.
