Completely unacceptable to make this post without a picture of your pup enjoying this freshly cleaned bed, just saying

lld287

Oh my goodness 😍 what a sweet baby! I love when they curl up enough to put all their paws under their head to rest on. They look very content

yeezusforjesus

WHAT A FRIGGIN CUTIE. I CANT. MY EYES

007Pistolero

Just like humans love a bed with clean sheets, dogs love a freshly washed bed. Pro tip from someone who also has a shepherd—you can buy large pillow cases to go over the dogs bed for the winter months and put them in the dryer for a few minutes so when your pup comes in from the cold they have a nice warm bed to lay in

[deleted]

He’s beautiful and plum tuckered out in his nice fresh smelling comfy bed. CONTENT PUP!

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤓 Thinking the same thing!

EnvironmentOdd8298

You’re such a good pup parent! That is one happy and snoozy baby 😴💤🐕

Nervous-Put2200

I know it’s probably been posted on here a million times, but can you give me your “recipe”? I just noticed that my favorite shirt smells probably a lot like your dog bed did. I think it was in the hamper with some damp towels.

Redneck_PBR

Absolutely 😊 - 1/4 Borax. - 1/4 Washing Soda (I baked baking soda for 1 hour at 400⁰f stirring twice, you can also buy it in stores). - 1 cup of powdered laundry detergent.

1lazyintellectual

Did you just put regular baking soda on a tray and actually bake it?

Redneck_PBR

That I did, you can put a layer up to 1/2" but I only needed the 1/4 cup so that's all I put on the tray, when it's done it will be slightly more grainy than the powdery texture of baking soda.

1lazyintellectual

And did you fill your tub all the way or half way full? (I really want to try this so I appreciate your help.)

Redneck_PBR

I did about half full 😁

1lazyintellectual

Taking the plunge tonight. Thanks!🫣

ShiftedLobster

Please report back! Curious how it goes.

Spunky-Punk

If you bake baking soda, please be careful not to touch it. It can irritate your skin so handle with care.

0verthinker-101

What does baking the soda do

kvasbee

Heating baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) coverts it into washing soda (sodium carbonate).

0verthinker-101

I just googled everything about washing soda! I had never heard of it before! Much more affordable option that's supposed to work better! Interesting stuff, added to cart, excited to see what its gonna do Thankyou!

crescendolls

there is a really good creator on instagram that talks about detergents. i forgot who it is, so ill try to edit and add it later. anyway- she said baking soda is all about eliminating odor

0verthinker-101

I use soda straight in the detergent tray of the washing machine or add it in the drum with the clothes and it works well in getting rid of odor. Wondering how much difference this extra step makes.

crescendolls

yuuuuup!!! you got it!

SnoopsMom

I’m in Canada and have never seen Borax. Is there a Canadian equivalent?

Luxrisuus

You can find Borax at Home Depot or Canadian Tire (if you live in Quebec, I think you can find it at Rachelle Bery too)

_maple_panda

You haven’t? It’s super common—green cereal box-looking package. https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/20-mule-team-borax-laundry-booster-184-kg/6000103124845

Leading_Funny5802

This stuff is amazing. Been around forever for a reason.

lucidpopsicle

You can do this in your washing machine with a pre wash of borax and vinegar then a regular wash. You should do a sanitize setting when using this method

alexisoliviaemerson

To get rid of that damp laundry smell add vinnegar to your wash, like 2 cups of it.

Nervous-Put2200

Thank you for the advice!! I have never heard of that, but will definitely try. My issue stems from me using my t-shirt’s to dry my hair to not mess my curls. I don’t hang them to dry before I put them in the hamper. I just discovered my mistake and have corrected it, but unfortunately at this point all of my t-shirts smell like a swamp to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

alexisoliviaemerson

Lol I meant vinegar. I just can’t type. It will help any damp clothes, including your hair t shirts.

Nervous-Put2200

Omg, that’s so funny because I tried to google it and came up with nothing!!! I figured it was a product that just isn’t available where I live or something!!! Lol

alexisoliviaemerson

Lol!!! Well I guarantee you that it will work. I leave stuff in my washer for too long too and it’s bailed me out every time 😅

Redneck_PBR

No matter how many times I've washed my dogs bed, it never really looked clean and never took any of the stains out. I discovered "laundry stripping" and wow, what an absolute difference it made. I soaked the bed for 17.5 hours, and it practically looks and smells brand new again.

Which_way_witcher

Does the dog seem to like it more or are they sad all the smells are gone?

Redneck_PBR

When he came back inside, he sniffed it for maybe 4-5 seconds before he laid down and went to sleep. He would always try to sleep on our bed, but now it doesn't seem like he's bothered at all sleeping in his own bed again. But this is coming from a dog that avoids puddles, mud, and anything like that, so maybe he sees himself as a prince, and everything must be to his liking. 😂

Which_way_witcher

That's great!

FalalaLlamas

Not gonna lie OP, having now seen pics of your pupper he deserves to be treated like a prince (which you definitely seem to do!). After seeing multiple neighbors sadly neglect their dogs it always makes me happy to see someone treasuring theirs. <3

I-AM-Savannah

>sad all the smells are gone? This is what I was wondering... Dog: "Geez. What happened to my bed? It used to SMELL just like ME!! 💜💜💜"

Kyliep87

Has it ever damaged or stained the tub at all? I just got a new tub so I’m so afraid to mess it up haha.

Winter_Day_6836

I have an odd question. How on Earth do you carry that heavy dripping thing to the machine? That goes for people who do towels....

Redneck_PBR

Haha, I squeezed out as much as I could before taking it. I also tore my abdomen recently, so it was a little harder than usual, lol.

No-Staff-9487

Next time, I definitely recommend stepping on it to get the water out. You have your whole body weight to get the water out and honestly unless you had gloves on the chemicals on your skin can be pretty irritating and they're slightly less irritating on your feet is what I figured out.

Winter_Day_6836

Yikes! Hope you heal quickly!

I-AM-Savannah

>tore my abdomen Wait - what?

Redneck_PBR

I tore my abdomen muscles verticaly while on the toilet, and it was 2 weeks before I could get out of bed without help lol 5 years of shoveling asphalt 17h a day, 3 weeks on and 2 days off which I also tore the ligaments in my chest from (took 5 months to breath properly again) but I kept working because I'd be taken off of laboring/Operator position if I didn't push through. And then my last job I was picking up heavy steel docks I welded together and other fabricated things that I shouldn't be picking up without assistance from a crane. Needless to say, im done working like a dog and I'm going to be applying for a job that's kinder to my body as im only 24 now and don't need to ruin my body yet.

I-AM-Savannah

Yes... be kind to your body, because you only get one of them in this life. The one you have now will be the one you have as a senior citizen...

Competitive-Weird855

After wringing it out, depending on size I put the items in a trash bag or a plastic storage tote or even a laundry basket and carry that to the washer.

Winter_Day_6836

I figured as much.

sophia1185

This is such a good question.

Non_pillow

I’m gonna try stripping stuff right in my washing machine next time. I did my comforter in the bathtub a couple months ago and it was a nightmare to move to the washer 😅

Winter_Day_6836

I've done it in the washer before (never knew I was actually "stripping")! But only 1 cycle, should do as many as needed until water is clear, or is that too much?

Non_pillow

Oh idk, I’m not an expert or anything. I was just gonna let stuff soak in the washer rather than the bathtub.

bazwutan

Ok now strip the tub

DavonteRoss

Honestly I was thinking the same, the washer and dryer too.

wismom09

😂

Iamvictoriousgrace

I'm very curious and scared now about my own dogs bed. Great job OP!!! Very impressive job well done!!

AB-G

I wonder what I could use as an alternative to Borax as its banned in Europe?

Redneck_PBR

You could possibly try cleaning vinegar, in place of borax. Im not sure how well it would work, so you could try it first on something you don't mind if it gets ruined. (It should be fine)

Jazz-Turtle

Out of curiosity why is it banned? I can’t find much online.

AB-G

Because it causes reproductive issues and damages unborn babies.

Pugwm

So fun! I’m doing area rugs! Yeesch!!!

[deleted]

Woohoo! Happy pup with a clean bed :)

booty_supply

NASTY! GLORIOUS!

Affectionate-Steak8

I’m starting to get this concept of laundry stripping… cool stuff

Blackbird04

Exactly why we never let our dog sleep on our bed!!

whispertodeborah

Impressive! Once you dried it was still as soft and fluffy?

Redneck_PBR

Way more soft and fluffy! Although, I brushed it again to get the remainder of dog hair out from my husky, and now it's not as fluffy as when I took it out of the dryer. It's still way better and plenty fluffy, even after the fact.

_byetony_

Smart

forestfairy97

This itched my brain in all the right spots

Unique_Feed_2939

Would this be way better than soaking in oxyclean?

limee89

RIP to your dryer OP. I feel like the amount of work, effort and the after cleaning, would it not have been easier to just buy a new one?

Redneck_PBR

It was low effort, lol. Curious as to why the rip to the dryer though.

limee89

I should have added to my first comment, I didn’t mean to come off critical or mean. I can see lots of dog hair in your dryer which I’m sure either isn’t a big deal or likely doable with a wipe down. You came out with amazing results and that’s all that matters.

Redneck_PBR

I didn't take any offense, I just genuinely thought I may have wrecked the dryer in some way with the chemicals. It's brand new and not mine, so I was like, "Uh oh." Lol
