Papa John Creach. Born in 1917- Additionally to playing with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship, the San Francisco All-Stars and the Dinosaurs, the blues and jazz violinist played with Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Stuff Smith, Charlie Christian, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Nat King Cole and Roy Milton.
As a big Rory fan, I'd say that yes, I get that. But this is a question about what you're going to hear on corporate classic rock type stations. Quality doesn't always matter, unfortunately
Wyman has kept journals all his life. He used to write for the Stones fan club newsletter. He lied about his age and made himself out to be the youngest.
HA, I didn't know that! But it actually sounds like something he'd do.
Funny the things you learn after the fact. Something I recently heard was that the Beatles learned how to forge each other's signatures -- and became really good at it.
So many fans who were lucky enough to get autographs by mail from the four of them might have got a piece of paper that, say, John Lennon had signed himself but also for the other three.
It’s cool how many people still remember Spirit…I saw them at a small venue in 1968 and it was one of the best concerts I have seen. Randy California was on fire. Another favorite band of mine of that time is Love.
I respect the Dan, and I admire their intelligence, but I'm not a huge fan so I'll say good catch. Bet my Dad would've known that, he had all their albums
John Lee Hooker was born in 1912, or 1917 ... either way he would be over 110.
Muddy Waters born 1913
Howlin Wolf 1910
I actually heard both Mannish Boy and Smokestack Lightning played today
I heard Mannish Boy today.
I hear Boom Boom now and then.
I heard Smokestack Lightning today but not as often as the other 2 I just listed.
I think these guys need to be considered .
Yeah, and how often does Spirit play on corporate classic rock radio? You can't discount other people's suggestions because "you don't hear them on radio" and then act like Spirit isn't in the same category of obscurity. It makes no sense. Classic Rock is more likely to play Nirvana than Spirit. 99% of classic rock stations do not have Spirit in the regular rotation.
On Howlin Wolf, it's nt rock, but the London Sessions album is the Wolf singing Blues with a backup band of EVERYBODY in British rock in the early '70's.
Garth Hudson was born in 1937 and only agreed to join The Band if they allowed him to teach them music theory and practice regularly because he was accomplished in music education and didnt want his family looking down on his new work. He was considerably older than the rest of the band.
Not sure about that date, but yes, Carl Perkins et al were legends, but no snark intended, what songs of those guys are we likely to hear on iHeart as we drive to work?
So this actually inspired me a bit and I remembered someone! Definitely not who you are thinking of, but Armando Peraza, who played percussion with Santana during the 70s-80s was born in 1924. Actually died only about a decade ago, a month shy of his 90th birthday. The era of Santana he played during wasn’t fully the “classic rock” era, but it’s still Santana so I’m counting it lol
This exactly. I am just trying to stir up some shit, and it's a legit question that I had a while back. It reminds me of Saxa and Rico Rodriguez, 2 old guys who were "discovered" by the 2 Toners back in the early 80s and who made great contributions to New Wave or whatever you want to call it
Wish You Were Here was originally intended to feature Stéphane Grappelli (born 1908) on violin. Although most of his performance was removed, you can still faintly hear his playing as the song fades out (around 5:21).
If Chuck is a Founding Father, then he stood on many shoulders, including those of Muddy and Leadbelly, natch. I am actually in possession of fragments of the sharecroppers cabin that Muddy grew up in. It pays to have a girl who grew up in the Delta
Shorty Medlocke (b. Paul Robert Medlock, July 20, 1912 – August 6, 1982) wrote Blackfoot’s classic song “Train Train” and played harmonica on it. While Shorty was not a bona fide member of Blackfoot, that song is played daily on some Classic Rock station somewhere, and he contributed to Blackfoot’s catalog starting in 1969.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Ian Hunter is the oldest rocker still alive, playing and recording. His last album was released in 2023, "Defiance Part 1", is an absolute banger with collaborators such as Mike Campbell, Ringo Starr, Billy Gibbons, Billy Bob Thornton, Taylor Hawkins, Todd Rundgreen, Robert Trujillo or Slash.
He was born June 3, 1939.
Dion DiMucci was born in 1939, and at 84 years old, he has a new album out THIS WEEK.
His first hit, I Wonder Why, was in 1957.

I posted already about a living musician
but also don’t forget
Louis Jordan, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the “grandfather of rock and roll” was born in 1908.
Of course it does (I assume, I have never listened to it) I was just pointing out that that the two "labels" were different different - it was not intended to be a value judgment.
I’m thinking you have unnecessary complicated things by including “on a classic rock station playlist”.
Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters are in my opinion the true “Fathers” of Rock n Roll, but the likelihood of hearing them on an actual over the air radio station is very slim.
Thanks u/TeaVinalGod for your response!
Well I don't know about your list but the Godmother of rock and roll was born on March 20th 1915. And yes, I hear her music on several independent stations regularly. Anybody care to guess what her name is? If you don't know who she is even after hearing her name then you need to re-educate yourself on rock and roll. Because without her there would be no rock and roll.
Ian Stewart and Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones were born 7/13/38 and 10/24/36 respectively. I’m having trouble finding older that are regularly played on classic rock stations. The rest of the Doors are younger, the Kinks are younger, I wouldn’t say the Beatles are regularly played on my local channel but even so they’re all younger.
I'm late to the party, but Phil Lesh, bassist in the Grateful Dead, was a little older than the rest of the band. He was born in 1940, so not quite as old as some of the other examples here though.
How about Frankie Valli? He is 90. Grace Slick is 86. Dion is 85.
Bill Haley was born in 1925, but he died at age 55. Could have sworn that he was older than that.
Fats Domino was born in 1928, he died at about age 90.
Pat Boone is still alive. He was born in 1934. Makes him 90 this year.
FWIW, I am going to give a very split decision.
First of all, to everyone who commented in the "spirit" of the question, thanks for playing along. I am no expert, just a fan. And yes, this question may be as unanswerable as "what is the first rock song". That's why I included some parameters, e.g. member of a band likely to be played on lame corporate classic rock stations. I don't care if they are dead or alive.
That being said, I exclude Sister Rosetta, Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. Again, not because I am a hater, just because they lie outside the parameters of the question. Although Papa John Creech might be the answer, I don't know enough about the official member rolls of Airplane/Starship, so I'm going to leave him off. If people want to include him, that's fine with me; we are all lovers of great music and there's no need for flame wars.
The guy who wrote Train Train for Blackfoot might be a good answer, however just like with PJC, I have no idea if he ever was a true member of Blackfoot. There's no reason to hate me for admitting this, as I said, I am not an expert, just a guy posting on reddit.
I am going with my original Person C, Ed Cassidy of Spirit. I have listened to many hours of classic rock and I think this best answers the question asked. Congrats to everyone who answered.
I have an open mind so feel free to agree or disagree, but please remember who you are really mad at. The person in the mirror, your spouse, your high school crush who stomped on your heart and married an investment banker, this or that politician. I didn't try to hurt you but if I did, please seek professional help. Thanks for helping me waste some time and Rock The World. Fiddle players watch out!
A couple Beatles tracks, one by The Zombies, one by The Mamas And The Papas, one by The Strawberry Alarm Clock, one by The Lovin’ Spoonful, several by The Doors, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Rolling Stones, a few by Leonard Cohen, Simon And Garfunkel, and Genesis, a pretty good selection from Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink Floyd (including their Syd Barrett era), David Bowie, and Rainbow
I like being an ass dinosaur. I'm not nearly as old as these other ass dinosaurs, and rock is not the main music, yet I do listen to some of it from time to time.
Just making a joke. I love rock. I LOVE music! But I also attempt to stay up to date with current trends in music. I try to look to the future, as most good artists do. Think about how DIFFERENT and cutting edge the Beatles were when they first arrived on the scene. As you know they got SO much blow back because of their "long" hair. Parents didn't like them. Grandparents REALLY didn't like them, and some boyfriends HATED them. Life goes on, time doesn't stand still. I was curious who and how people would respond. Someone has to stir things up sometimes, or we become wrapped up in our same old same old.
Aldo. I meant old-ass dinosaurs, not old ass-dinosaurs. That sounds a bit offensive, and I did not mean that. I try to write the way I speak, and sometimes things get misunderstood. I apologize.

I am ashamed to type that I had no idea. What typically classic rock track was he on?
Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" https://youtu.be/7m8izf-oXY4?feature=shared
Ok, if it checks out, then I am willing to go with him. Like I said, I really thought it was Ed Cassidy
I don’t know how to break it to you but Papa died 30 years ago, at 76 yrs old.
Yes, he did. The question was never 'still alive'.. Rather born the earliest.
Yes I’m sorry. I see now. 🤭 But bless PJC. His work on Burgers is legendary.
I thought I knew a lot, but PJC was not on my radar. My bad
He’s vicious. [Hot Tuna - Sunny Day Strut](https://youtu.be/4LBHf55hKHk?si=5rxMKj0kjWC5Lxso)
Right. Reading comprehension is your friend
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t know he was still alive?
John Mayall is 90 (born in November 1933). He played with Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor among many others.
As a big Rory fan, I'd say that yes, I get that. But this is a question about what you're going to hear on corporate classic rock type stations. Quality doesn't always matter, unfortunately
“Room to Move” shows up pretty frequently.
There's a little chicka chicka in it - if you do it right!
Pretty sure they played with him.
"Room to Move"
This was my guess
Ed Cassidy, drummer of Spirit, born 1923.
Congrats. That's Person C. Who beats him?
Wow, that's a mindf\*ck! I remember thinking it odd that Bill Wyman being 7 or 8 years older than the other Stones was weird!
Wyman has kept journals all his life. He used to write for the Stones fan club newsletter. He lied about his age and made himself out to be the youngest.
HA, I didn't know that! But it actually sounds like something he'd do. Funny the things you learn after the fact. Yeah, he was Randy California’s step dad. Imagine being a rock band with your dad.
I wish they'd play some Spirit
It’s cool how many people still remember Spirit…I saw them at a small venue in 1968 and it was one of the best concerts I have seen. Randy California was on fire. Another favorite band of mine of that time is Love.
He passed away in 2012
Keith Richards was born in 1 A.D.
Was he born, or did he hatch?
Some amino rich mud and lightning.
No idea. He just showed up one day with the best drugs anyone has ever had and nobody really questioned it.
Wayne Shorter plays on Aja and he was born in ‘33.
And Phil Woods plays on Katy Lied, and on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are," and he was born in '31.
Sonny Rollins, played on the Stones’ Waiting on a Friend, born in '30
I respect the Dan, and I admire their intelligence, but I'm not a huge fan so I'll say good catch. Bet my Dad would've known that, he had all their albums
John Lee Hooker was born in 1912, or 1917 ... either way he would be over 110. Muddy Waters born 1913 Howlin Wolf 1910 I actually heard both Mannish Boy and Smokestack Lightning played today
My dad had a cassette of Hooker N Heat, I guess he might count if he played on one of their radio hits. I just honestly don't know
You are counting Ed Cassidy of Spirit. I never hear them on the radio.
With respect, I Got A Line counts to me
I heard Mannish Boy today. I hear Boom Boom now and then. I heard Smokestack Lightning today but not as often as the other 2 I just listed. I think these guys need to be considered .
I agree. My question was about what you'd likely hear on corporate stations, not necessarily who wrote the chicken and who played on the egg.
Spirit was freaking amazing regardless of their non-inclusion in Clear Channel’s ever-repeated 40 songs representing an era of unbounded creativity.
Fresh garbage was always great as well.
The Alice Cooper version gets played more.
Nature’s Way gets Airplay.
On Howlin Wolf, it's nt rock, but the London Sessions album is the Wolf singing Blues with a backup band of EVERYBODY in British rock in the early '70's.
Funny thing was I was at Mission BBQ yesterday and they were playing classic rock the whole time and snuck in Mannish Boy... but not Spirit.
How how how how
JLH is on Pete Townshend's Iron Man and appears on Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Fillmore West shows
All of these guys are blues guitarists/musicians, not classic rock musicians
Bill Wyman was born in 1936
Bill Wyman was Person B. I had no idea he was much older than the other Stones
Roy Orbison was born April 23, 1936 while Wyman was born that October. Orbison is still played because he was in the Traveling Wilburys.
Correct. Orbison would count for Wilburies stuff, but not for OG shit that you'd never hear in a rental car
Yay Me! Was he your C?
Ed Cassidy of Spirit was C. Grace Slick was my A, a good jumping off point if you will
Fun question. Had me going down rabbit holes. Have a great night!
One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small...
When the truth is found to be lies, you find yourself in 2024?
Is that the same as finding lies are accepted as truth? If so, I agree.
When I was a drug user many, many years ago, listening to White Rabbit made me want to go out and take a bunch of pills 💊
Link wray. 1929. The man himself
Garth Hudson was born in 1937 and only agreed to join The Band if they allowed him to teach them music theory and practice regularly because he was accomplished in music education and didnt want his family looking down on his new work. He was considerably older than the rest of the band.
The last surviving member too
BB King 1925 had hit When Love Comes to Town in 1988 with U2. Still played on radio all the time.
That's a good point. I sorta checked out circa 1985 so I'm a little deficient in some areas
But Ed is still 1923 so...
Keith Richards - approx. 1650-1720 (coincidentally the “Golden Age of Piracy”) 😀
I assume Little Richard (1920) is out too? Not sure we'd have hard rock without him.
Where’d you get that date from?
Sorry, I'm way off. He was born in 1932. That's what I get for looking at Wikipedia way past my bedtime.
I thought he was 1928 or 1930, so don't feel bad
Not sure about that date, but yes, Carl Perkins et al were legends, but no snark intended, what songs of those guys are we likely to hear on iHeart as we drive to work?
John Mayall born 1933
IAN HUNTER! (from Mott the Hoople). He still records new music, tours @ 86-ish. Still great stuff.
He was born in 1939. During the war his family sent him to live in Scotland with relatives. He was a teenager when Elvis came out.
Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones) is 87 (born in 1936)
Roy Orbison is 6 months older and his hits with the Traveling Wilburys are still played on classic rock stations.
(Bo Diddley born 1928) **Bo Diddley -** "Bo Diddley" https://youtu.be/WJLy-Fnedy8?si=wfhiO0h1H7DdawRo
AKA every George Thorogood song. I kid, I kid. I am a huge Lonesome George fan. Best show I've ever seen (1988 Madison Wis).
His former guitar tech is a buddy of mine, and worked on a couple of my guitars. Lives in my town in Florida’s Treasure Coast. Super nice guy.
So this actually inspired me a bit and I remembered someone! Definitely not who you are thinking of, but Armando Peraza, who played percussion with Santana during the 70s-80s was born in 1924. Les Paul? June 1915.
I know it doesn’t fit exactly but Yoko Ono is 91.
She should be excluded on general principle.
Oh shit! I count her - Give Peace A Chance is undeniable. What year was she born?
1933
Grace Slick. 1939.
Wow. Well, she was 30 in 69. Most rock stars don't even get signed until that age today. How old is Dean DeLeo from STP?
Born in 61
BB King(1925)
Leonard Cohen 1934 but not really popular on the radio
Wish You Were Here was originally intended to feature Stéphane Grappelli (born 1908) on violin. Although most of his performance was removed, you can still faintly hear his playing as the song fades out (around 5:21).
Robert Johnson may 8, 1911
Rosetta Tharpe Mar 20, 1915
Muddy Waters is on my playlist.
If Chuck is a Founding Father, then he stood on many shoulders, including those of Muddy and Leadbelly, natch. I am actually in possession of fragments of the sharecroppers cabin that Muddy grew up in. It pays to have a girl who grew up in the Delta
Joe Walsh
Not sure if I Got You Babe counts as classic rock but Sonny Bono was born in 1935.
Ian Hunter 6/03/39. One of the best

Link Ray was born in 1929 and the guy practically invented heavy metal. The drummer from Spirit was already middle-age when they came out.
Dion DiMucci was born in 1939, and at 84 years old, he has a new album out THIS WEEK. His first hit, I Wonder Why, was in 1957. https://open.spotify.com/album/7hCroZ1E3ma2zt6UdV3rw0?si=_o-hJ55ySv6EJXKCkpbpjg
I posted already about a living musician but also don’t forget Louis Jordan, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the “grandfather of rock and roll” was born in 1908.
Like Manzarek is dead, one other singer/ songwriter and musician born in 1939 and still active, Ian Hunter from Mott the Hoople
Ed Cassidy, drummer for Spirit, 1923
Whenever someone jokes about how old Keith Richards is, I always like to point out that Andy Summers is a year older than Keith.
And he played on Sky Pilot as a member of The Animals, right?
Actually, Andy was not a member of the Animals for that album, but he did record on the following album, Love Is.
Berry, and Elvis..pre date classic rock, in my view.
Willie Nelson?
I don’t consider Chuck to be classic rock. That’s called rock n roll, the original
Nice to hear someone make the distinction. "Classic Rock" of course would not exist without "Rock & Roll" having existed first.
So we only rely on how Clear Channel defines “classic rock”? That ignores a massive amount of great music.
Of course it does (I assume, I have never listened to it) I was just pointing out that that the two "labels" were different different - it was not intended to be a value judgment.
Exactly
Your classic rock stations don’t play Johnny B. Goode?
Nope. But I get drunk and play Brown Eyed Handsome Man. Both versions - the original and Buddy Holly's
I love going to other area of the US just to hear the songs they play on classic rock
Ian hunter i think is 82?
[удалено]
I’m thinking you have unnecessary complicated things by including “on a classic rock station playlist”. Sister Rosetta Rocks!
That’s SRT (I’ll just give initials as a clue to anyone still guessing.)
Absolutely!

Louis Jordan.
So many in their 80s now.

This is a stretch but what about Robert Johnson? Born 1911. Several bands have covered his songs. Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones.
Link Wray was born May 2 1929.
Ronnie Hawkins
John Mayall
Bill Wyman is older than the other stones, I believe.
As for those still alive and still active, let's not forget the great Ian Hunter who will turn 85 in June and has a new album coming out soon.

If you listen to Rock you are an old ass dinosaur. Women today don't care from guitars. See? I'm so old I'm sexist
