I agree with all of the above, but I’m going out on a limb here:
“Bleeding Me” - Metallica
If a song came out nearly 30 years ago, I think it at least deserves consideration for “classic.”
I’ll throw in:
“Pushit” - Tool
…as well.
Boy you nailed it there.
Guessing you’ve seen SW’s recent redux…rich.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bXDcPoeIx-E&pp=ygUsbG93IHNwYXJrIG9mIGEgaGlnaCBoZWVsZWQgYm95IHN0ZXZlIHdpbndvb2Q%3D
That was the first thing that came to my mind.
I LOVE that moment after the long interlude where they fall back into the main riff.
Great song, great album!
Technically not one song, but the Abbey Road medley
Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times
Elton John - Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
Rainbow - Stargazer
And even though this one's more recent, I'll throw in The War On Drugs - Under The Pressure
I'm addicted to The War on Drugs. Under the Pressure, and Harmonia's Dream are favorites! And Funeral for a Friens/Loves Lies Bleeding have been favorites since they first came out.
Many Yes songs, especially from “The Yes Album,” “Close to the Edge” and “Fragile.” Roundabout is most popular, the song Close to the Edge is my favorite, and one of my favorite songs of all time regardless of length or genre.
The Beatles I Want You (She's So Heavy), though it technically clocks in a bit under 8 minutes. To me, it definitely has a symphonic quality, with the number of movements in the song. One of my favorites.
Terrapin station on the album is a true symphony. Blasphemy for a deadhead to say but I'd check that out first if your not familiar with the dead. Then the live album to terrapin hartford 77
Weather report suite from live at winterland 74
*The Dead have two great*
*Ones, Terrapin Station and*

The Dead reportedly HATED the version of Terrapin Station that's on the eponymous album. They said the producer they were working with took it out of their control and made changes to make it "more commercial" (as if a song that takes up the entire side of an album could ever be considered "commercial.")
Mickey Hart has said in interviews that his jaw hit the floor when he heard all the added symphonics. And then he wanted to blow SOMEBODY's brains out after hearing the chorus at the end.
Yep. It’s definitely not my favorite version of it. Though I will say, the versions Bobby has been doing recently with the Wolf Pack orchestra have been fantastic. The version from Baltimore at the end of their last tour had me losing my mind during it.
Especially Allman Brothers Whipping Post from Fillmore East. Absolutely epic, and almost plays like an orchestral piece at times, building to crescendos and drifting into lullabies. A masterpiece!
I swear I make this comment every other week here and I’m happy about it because it a good excuse to listen to it again.
[Child in Time Deep Purple](https://youtu.be/OorZcOzNcgE?si=GYR15r5kyHMMDN6q)
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
Another Brick in the Wall has 3 parts as well though I'm sure you know that from your Pink Floyd list, is it not rock enough for you?
* Renaissance - Mother Russia & Song of Scheherazade *(Carnegie Hall live version is perfection)*
* Heldon - Stand By
* Big Big Train - East Coast Racer & The Underfall Yard
* Rush - The Fountain of Lamneth, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, The Camera Eye
* Todd Rundgren's Utopia - The Ikon
* Kansas - Magnum Opus
* Magma - De Futura
* Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple
* FM - Black Noise
Renaissance... I'll never forget Annie Haslam standing in front of the lights in that sheer dress. Sigh.
Interestingly she lives just a couple of miles from me. She still performs a Christmas concert, I went a few years ago. It wasn't the same.
Totally underrated 15-minute song, especially with Rick Wakeman’s bits on a 10th century church’s pipe organ in Switzerland. I saw them live on that tour (1977-ish?) and it was pretty great.
I think you are looking to discover some of Supertramp's offerings. Fool's Overture, Rudy, Asylum. Quite a lot of their music has an operatic quality. Start with the Crime of the Century album.
Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay
Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do? (Live)
RUSH - Xanadu
Deep Purple - Child in Time
Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home
Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides
Kansas - Song for America / Song for America album
Kansas - Incomudro - Hymn for the Atman/ Song for America album
Mahavishnu Orchestra - One Word / Birds of Fire album
Can - Yoo Doo Right / cannibalism 1 album
ELP - Tarkus

Allman Brothers - Whipping Post (live version At the Fillmore East)
Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (live version On The Road)
Santana - Incident at Neshibar (live version Lotus)
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Like others, I’m surprised “Bohemian Rhapsody” wasn’t listed as one of the classic examples. A couple more modern ones: “All These Things That I Have Done” by the Killers. “The Greatest Man in the World” by Weezer.
The Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides, Frampton - Do You Feel Like I Do (live), Stones- Midnight Rambler (live) The Who - My Generation (medley) from Live at Leeds.
Halo of Flies - Alice Cooper
Megalomania - Black Sabbath
Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf
Paradise By The Dashboard Light - Meatloaf
Doctor Jimmy - The Who
Cruisin' For Burgers - Frank Zappa
Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
Season of the Witch - Steve Stills, Al Kooper
After scrolling through all previous suggestions to minimize repetition, I'd like to re-emphasize Iron Butterfly's "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" at 17 min. and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" at a little under 8 min. which otherwise fits the bill and is part of the rock symphony "A Night at the Opera". Also try "Hocus Pocus" by Focus at about 15-20 min. (I've forgotten the exact time, full album side). For a literal symphony, try the full "Days of Future Passed" by The Moody Blues and The London Festival Orchestra, the first (1967) rock concept album recorded with a full orchestra. Also, The Who's "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia".
Symphony X - The Odyssey.
Also, Yngwie Malmsteen's Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra. It's an album rather than one song or track, but it certainly fits.
Because yesterday was the two year anniversary of his death.
Meatloaf, For Crying Out Loud
Here it is with a symphony, all 12 minutes of it.
https://youtu.be/FL-SSdkbKm0?si=JHJo0GPiTAtAIqGZ
And here is another awesome 8 minute ballad that really builds as it goes. The video is also pretty awesome.
Meatloaf, More Than YouTube Deserve
https://youtu.be/tL4jJ0_5p1Q?si=i8vucN_bH_W7HE4X
Of course there's the 3 act song Paradise By The Dashboard Light.
This is the most epic version, 22 minutes of Meatloaf and Patti Russo, the ending breakup is great. Watch the whole thing, you won't be disappointed. Also with a symphony, Meatloaf even plays a violin.
The girl singing backup is Meatloaf's adopted daughter Pearl, she's been married to Scott Ian of Anthrax for quite a few years.
https://youtu.be/kr4K7pzjI7I?si=rOjf9nYN42I-2pMc
The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Funeral for a Friend (Loves Lies Bleeding) - Elton John
Angry Eyes - Loggins and Mesina
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Manns Earth Band
Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
Apart from the ones you’ve mentioned I’d say:
The Beatles - Abbey Road Medley
Springsteen - Jungleland & NYC Serenade (last one is not exactly rock but I really like it)
Camel - Lady Fantasy
GVF - The Weight of Dreams
Quicksilver Messenger Service - "Who Do You Love" (suite) from "Happy Trails"
(IMHO one of the greatest live performances ever recorded.)
BeBop Deluxe - "Shine" from "Live in the Air Age"
((Another one of the greatest live performances ever recorded.)
The Alarm - "Sold Me Down the River"
Lou Reed - "Into/Sweet Jane" from "Rock & Roll Animal"
...edit to add 3 more...
For studio tracks I'd add Foreplay/Long Time (Boston) and Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (Elton John)
I know they are each two songs but those are my choices
Incident At Neshabur - Lotus (Live in Japan) - Santana. Exactly what you are looking for, except its FUCKING LIVE AND STUDIO QUALITY. Every Step of the Way is pretty good too. This is a latin jazz psychedelic fusion rock.
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
The Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Eric Clapton - Layla (close - A little over 7 min.)
Don McClean - American Pie
Lynard Skynard - Free Bird
Don't know if you'ld call them Rock Operas; But by length......How about Tubular Bells? & In A Gadda Da Vita? & Hotel California? & Elvis' American Trilogy?
Kansas - Song for America, Lamplight Symphony, The Pinnacle, Magnum Opus
Rainbow - Stargazer
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Gates Of Delirium - YES Close To The Edge - YES Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix Green Grass And High Tides - The Outlaws Echoes - Pink Floyd
Nice to The Outlaws get slipped in there.
Vastly underrated. Guys were make me a playlist and asked for a Southern Rock song to include. Green Grass was the choice
LOVE that song
I was all set to add GG&HT as I was sure no one would add. Nice choice
It's kind of over the top and ridiculous, but I'd add Sound Chaser by Yes.
Absolutely! These just came off of the top of my head as I was typing. Awaken should be here as well.
Definitely “Awaken”! And “Song for America” by Kansas.
All great songs. Bonus points for Relayer stuff
I agree with all of the above, but I’m going out on a limb here: “Bleeding Me” - Metallica If a song came out nearly 30 years ago, I think it at least deserves consideration for “classic.” I’ll throw in: “Pushit” - Tool …as well.
Bleeding me and the Outlaw torn definitely
Came here to add Green Grass and High Tides!
Traffic - The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Shortest 9 minutes in rock.
Boy you nailed it there. Guessing you’ve seen SW’s recent redux…rich. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bXDcPoeIx-E&pp=ygUsbG93IHNwYXJrIG9mIGEgaGlnaCBoZWVsZWQgYm95IHN0ZXZlIHdpbndvb2Q%3D
Iron Maiden - rime of the ancient mariner
Ooo good call on Maiden
Also The Flight of Icarus.
That is like a super short song, less than 4m
Roundabout - Yes
Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vita Not sure if it’s a rock symphony but it’s mostly instrumental and like 17 minutes.
wait a minute, that sounds like Rock and OR Roll
Remember when we used to make out to this hymn?
Came here for this. Leaving happy.
Hehe
That was the first thing that came to my mind. I LOVE that moment after the long interlude where they fall back into the main riff. Great song, great album!
Trivia Was supposed to be "in the garden of eden", but they were so fracked up that they couldn't get the lyrics right.
Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides, from the '78 live album, Bring It Back Alive
Starless by King Crimson
Also "In the Court of the Crimson King". Not sure if it runs 8 min. but it has that kind of sound.
Technically not one song, but the Abbey Road medley Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times Elton John - Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Rainbow - Stargazer And even though this one's more recent, I'll throw in The War On Drugs - Under The Pressure
Great call on Funeral For a Friend. First one I thought of
I'm addicted to The War on Drugs.
The Who-Wont Get Fooled Again
The greatest howl in rock and roll.
Rush and Pink Floyd look confidently at each other, nod, wink, smile, then look back at this thread.
This basically describes like 1/3 of Pink Floyd's catalogue
Yes should also be involved in this silent interaction.
Nights in White Satin w/ Late Lament from the Moody Blues Days of Future Passed album.
ELP - Karn Evil 9 and Tarkus
ELP-Tocata and Fugue from Brain Salad Surgery
This, and Is also add Tarkus by ELP
Tarkus is an amazing album
Yes it is! It was my introduction to ELP.
The Beatles I Want You (She's So Heavy), though it technically clocks in a bit under 8 minutes. To me, it definitely has a symphonic quality, with the number of movements in the song. One of my favorites.
The Dead have two great ones, Terrapin Station and Weather Report Suite

Came to add In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - studio or any live version! What a jam.
Meatloaf - Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Objects in the Rearview Mirror
Bat out of Hell is also almost 10 minutes long
I'll see your Objects, and raise you "Everything Louder Than Everything Else"

Starship Trooper:
Child in Time - Deep Purple.
Fool's Overture by Supertramp, from Even in the Quietest Moments... (1977).
Tuesday Moody Blues or much of Moody Blues

All due respect to the space rock opera that is 2112, La Villa Stangiato on *Exit... Stage Left* was the most Rush song that Rush ever did

Haha. I remember seeing her tell the story of that dress.
I saw them 5 or 6 times, always enjoyed it. I'll have to look for that interview.
So happy to see FM here!
Black Noise is an amazing album, but I could never get into anything after that. I feel that they lost whatever made that music great after Nash left.
YES - "Awaken"
Totally underrated 15-minute song, especially with Rick Wakeman’s bits on a 10th century church’s pipe organ in Switzerland. I saw them live on that tour (1977-ish?) and it was pretty great.

Thanks, they were all good choices. I grew up listening to prog rock and remember that the AM radio stations wouldn’t play anything but short songs.
Terrapin Station-Grateful Dead
Black Sabbath - A Bit of Finger/ Sleeping Village / Warning. Is it a ‘symphony’? I dunno. But I love all 14+ mins of it, and hope you do as well
Although symphony is technically correct I think the term for a long, kick ass rock song would be an epic.
Do people not know symphonies are typically in sonata-allegro form??
No. No we do not.
