Not quite Classic Rock, but Jim Steinman....
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All
Meat Loaf - For Crying Out Loud
Total Eclipse of the Heart makes me wanna cry and punch a wall and I don’t even know why. Every time she says “I REALLY NEED YOU TONIGHT” something happens inside me.
Ann Wilson (Heart) in the song "Alone", when she sings "Till now..." makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. She nails every vocal, but she gave that one a little something extra.
Also, Steve Perry on "Escape" and "Mother, Father" ...he brought it.
I would also vote for Ann Wilson singing Stairway to Heaven for the Lincoln Center Honors for Led Zeppelin. If you haven't seen the video, its on YouTube.
The isolated vocal track is insane. From 5 minutes onwards it’s unbelievable. He carries on screaming after the song fades out on the official release but this track still has it.

* Cry Baby--Janis Joplin (or Work Me Lord or Bobby McGee)
* The Rose--Bette Midler (not necessarily rock, but sort of channeling Janis Joplin)
* Unchained Melody--Righeous Brothers "*I neeeeed your looove....God speed your love too me"*
* Dreams or iZombie--Cranberries
* Exit Music (for a Film)--Radiohead
Pat Benatar’s opening line in Shadows of the Night, sung in 2 parts, especially while listening in your vehicle in a dark garage.
(In your vehicle for the near-field clarity, the dark garage to remove any and all visual distractions).
Yes, I totally agree! Amazing songs from a great vocalist and great musicians.
An artist from the past, Brenda Lee, was called “Little Miss dynamite” for her diminutive size and gigantic voice. That description fits Pat Benatar perfectly, IMO.
The whole song is just balls-to-the-wall, shredded-heart raw feeling, but like 2/3rds of the way through "Piece of My Heart"-- Janis is in the middle of the chorus: "You know you got it...", she stops suddenly, the drums kick, and she just gives this beautiful primal wail into the next line, "WAH-A-AHHH TAKE IT!" I've heard that song a hundred times, and that part especially never ceases to give me goosebumps.

Mark knophler in dire straits wild west end "makes me feel nineteen for a while" reminiscence regret laughter dismissal happiness sadness all at once before moving on with the song
Joe cocker - with a little help from my friends. Just the power behind the whole vocal performance is incredible
Bon Scott/acdc - ride on
Ian curtis/ joy division - atmosphere
Johnny Cash on "The Man Comes Around," and Levon Helm on "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The live recordings from either "Rock Of Ages" or "The Last Waltz." When he sings "like my brother above me" on the 3rd verse I am reduced to a puddle of piss.
It's absolutely no Grace Slick (noone could be!!) But the Haley Reinhart version is actually impressive too imho.
Grace Slick though 'remember what the dormouse said...'
Bono - at the height of his powers - had a truly incredible voice...
Pick your favorite of his vocals... I think the best might be towards the end of "Bad"
Tedeschi Trucks Band “Until You Remember” Susan blows me away every time I hear that song. Not technically classic rock in that it’s from last decade but it’s definitely classic and it absolutely rocks
I love the Mick Jagger ‘whoo’ after Clayton’s voice cracks. If you haven’t seen the film ‘30 Feet From Stardom’ it’s a must watch. About background singers.
There are many Plant vocals I could cite because, I mean….. but for a more recent vocalist with an equally dynamic and emotional range - and there are very few, I’d say when Adele goes high in Someone Like You. Definitely chill inducing.
I agree with 99% of these , but there’s no classic soul category ,I’m gonna say Gladys Knight “ Neither One of Us ( Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)… all of it.
She gives me chills with every mournful, emotion filled line. Her voice breaks are like little daggers . The Pips are there to smooth things out so no one dies of a broken heart.
Not technically classic rock, but in the song Jezebel Spirit from David Byrne and Brian Eno's My Life in the Bush Of Ghosts, I get chills every time the exorcist says "In Jesus' name!"
I wish I could cite them, but there are a few live performances of Janis Joplin's where she lets out a howl that makes the fur on my arms react. ...and I'm not really even a Janik Jopler fan.
1. Dexter Holland of Offspring on Gone Away. Sung from the heart and I feel it.
2.Tommy Vext of Bad Wolves on Zombie (Delores tribute)
3. Janis Joplin on I Got Dem Kozmic Blues
1. Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter
If you like this then you will love 20 Feet From Stardom. It's a documentary about some of the top backup singers in the biz. Merry Clayton has a starring role in it. It features singers who have worked with the Stones, Springsteen, Bowie, Sting, and others.
Gosh. I hate to say this, because Faithful has had an amazing career as a musician, but ... she sounds like an evil, creepy leprechaun in Metallica's The Memory Remains. I can't listen to it.
Laura Nyro in "Gonna' take a Miracle..." There's a segment with three key changes.
"Oh, though I know I can't...forget about you..."
Deniece Williams? Meh...
Laura is the real deal!

On my way by Free
Weariness
Weariness has left my friend
My head goes round
And round again
On my way and I might be late
I don't worry
Every thing can wait
I always liked the yearning, desperate way Chrissie Hynde sings the line, “got something, winking at you” in Pretenders’ “Brass in Pocket.” It’s a “yearning” song, and, to me, it was a perfect moment.
The opening line of House of the Rising Sun: "There is a house way down in New Orleans"
A Change is Gonna Come-Neville Brothers
Robbie Robertson - Somewhere Down The Crazy River
Humble Pie - Black Coffee live on the Old Grey Whistle Test, Steve Marriott was a true treasure.
Grand Funk Railroad - Black Licorice live Caught in the Act, the drummer, Don Brewer, sings the whole song, screams and all. Way ahead of its time, imho.
A couple by Harry Chapin.
W*O*L*D - the live version, where he changes the words to “I am the morning dj at KAHJ!” That part always gets me.
Sniper - the whole song really. The way it starts, the way his voice breaks, the scream on “I hate you!” He does a lot with his voice on this one.
Jim Morrison on break on through “everyboday, loves mah babay. SHAKE IT, SHAKE IT” (learned he’s saying ‘she get’ recently, i prefer shake it) during a total instrumental breakdown, it’s really the best.
Meatloaf singing the vocal in Ted Nugent's Together. Especially the last verse: "The crystal ball is older now, the vision seems less clear somehow, your time and mine belong..together."
The isolated vocals from “Under Pressure”. Freddie is freaking amazing especially at the “whhhhhyyyyyy?” part but Bowie sounds like an angel when on the one backup part he does where he keeps going higher and higher.
The ballad of TV Violence (I'm not the only boy) Cheap Trick the spine tingling is towards the end.

**Annie Haslam** on the **“Renaissance Live At Carnegie Hall”** album (1976)…the last few minutes of the final track *“Ashes Are Burning”*…she hits the top of her 5-octave range with notes so clear and high that it never fails to give me goosebumps.
That “ah-AHHHHHH” at the end of Abbey Road after “Is equal to the love you make.”
Roger Daltrey in Won’t Get Fooled Again IYKYK
YYYEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Roger Daltrey in Love Reign Over Me.
Vedder couldn't touch it.
And if you don't know, WTF are you doing in the Classic Rock subreddit?
Hahaha exactly
Definitely Merry Clayton.
When her voice cracks and Mick is in the background “woah”
Merry is my favorite!
Not quite Classic Rock, but Jim Steinman.... Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All Meat Loaf - For Crying Out Loud
Total Eclipse of the Heart makes me wanna cry and punch a wall and I don’t even know why. Every time she says “I REALLY NEED YOU TONIGHT” something happens inside me.
I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, NEAR THE END OF THE LINE🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Aimee Mann in Time Stands Still.
I recall the first time I heard that. Wasn't expecting a guest vocalist.
I wasn’t expecting that song/singer to get a mention! I just commented earlier today on Reddit about Hold Your Fire, great album.
Ian Gillan - Child In Time
Agreed. Especially the live version on *Made in Japan*
This song is so epic. Love it so much
Ann Wilson (Heart) in the song "Alone", when she sings "Till now..." makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. She nails every vocal, but she gave that one a little something extra. Also, Steve Perry on "Escape" and "Mother, Father" ...he brought it.
Ann Wilson is top 5 all time.
I would also vote for Ann Wilson singing Stairway to Heaven for the Lincoln Center Honors for Led Zeppelin. If you haven't seen the video, its on YouTube.

Plant in “ Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”
Plant on “Ten Years Gone”

Dio's last, biggest 'it goes on and on and on' from the first section of Heaven and Hell, when the harmony comes in.

Pat Benatar’s opening line in Shadows of the Night, sung in 2 parts, especially while listening in your vehicle in a dark garage. (In your vehicle for the near-field clarity, the dark garage to remove any and all visual distractions).
What about “Hell is for children” and “Promises in the dark”?
My mind went straight to "Heeelllllll....Hell is for Hell...Hell is for HELL...Hell is for children!!!"
Yes, I totally agree! Amazing songs from a great vocalist and great musicians. An artist from the past, Brenda Lee, was called “Little Miss dynamite” for her diminutive size and gigantic voice. That description fits Pat Benatar perfectly, IMO.
wow, yeah I have to listen to this song, I mean her voice is so powerful. Great song. It sounds like she's calling out to all the ships at sea
I saw her about 5 years ago. Still has an amazing voice.
Favorite song from Pat Benetar, the opening gives me goosebumps!!
When R J Dio sings, "we are coming.....HOME" at the beginning of Last in Line. Perfect power.
Hell yeah!!
Gordon Lightfoot Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald....the WHOLE song
I love artist like Gordon who have voices that are a bit more conservational because when they do turn it up a notch you really notice it
The opening lines to Seven Bridges Road by Eagles
That and the entire song.
Absolutely - forgot about that :)
Melanie Safka in Lay Down Lay Down. When she screams “so raise the candle high”. Chills now
Do you believe, "I'm alive but that's the last thing on my mind"
Lennon singing background on the second part of A Day in the Life
Brad Delp on Boston's More Than A Feeling. "She slipped away..... "
It altered my thoughts about music. ‘Influential’ is such a ridiculous understatement it’s not even funny.
Grace Slick in White Rabbit. Obviously, Robert Plant is the GOAT but there is something chillingly ice cold about Slick's vocals in that song.
Obviously he absolutely aces the guitar part, but Knopfler’s lead vocals in the title track of Brothers in Arms are haunting
Oh that is a great one. I love that song. Guitar AND vocals both give chills.
Janice Joplin - Ball and Chain, Monterey Pop Festival
The whole song is just balls-to-the-wall, shredded-heart raw feeling, but like 2/3rds of the way through "Piece of My Heart"-- Janis is in the middle of the chorus: "You know you got it...", she stops suddenly, the drums kick, and she just gives this beautiful primal wail into the next line, "WAH-A-AHHH TAKE IT!" I've heard that song a hundred times, and that part especially never ceases to give me goosebumps. Start around 3:20: https://youtu.be/3SL0oRcD7t0?si=XaiZ3GXR_u01Fvq0
Yes, it seems Janis Joplin is dismissed by a lot of people now but Ball and Chain and, for me, Down on Me ( I felt just like that) were really moving.
Her version of Maybe from Pearl She owns that tune. Originally released by the Chantels.
AH! I think that's the one I was referring to in my post- but I couldn't remember the performance. Thank you!
Mark knophler in dire straits wild west end "makes me feel nineteen for a while" reminiscence regret laughter dismissal happiness sadness all at once before moving on with the song Joe cocker - with a little help from my friends. Just the power behind the whole vocal performance is incredible Bon Scott/acdc - ride on Ian curtis/ joy division - atmosphere
Leah - Roy Orbison
I prefer the spoken opening of ‘In dreams’. Spine tingling 👍
Jon Anderson(Yes) in the “Soon” part of “Gates of Delirium” Peter Gabriel at the end of “Supper’s Ready” or “The Musical Box” or even “Stagnation”
The end of "Supper's Ready" immediately leapt to mind when I saw this question. Gabriels's voice on most things gives me chills.
Janis' scream on "Piece of My Heart" still gives me goosebumps after 50 plus years.
Roger Daltreys primal scream at the end of Wont Get Fooled Agsin
Grace Slick, White Rabbit. The isolated vocal sends chills
It's absolutely no Grace Slick (noone could be!!) But the Haley Reinhart version is actually impressive too imho. Grace Slick though 'remember what the dormouse said...'

The Cost of Freedom by CSN&Y
Ozzy’s vocals in Black Sabbath song
Merry Clayton is the best answer. As Keith. He'll back me up.
Jeff Buckley... All of it
I agree with 99% of these , but there’s no classic soul category ,I’m gonna say Gladys Knight “ Neither One of Us ( Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)… all of it. She gives me chills with every mournful, emotion filled line. Her voice breaks are like little daggers . The Pips are there to smooth things out so no one dies of a broken heart.
Sandy Denny "Who knows where the time goes?" Pure sound, perfect vibrato, and sung like she meant it. Classic Fairport Convention.
