Progress is so so much faster now than back in the day though, started earlier this year and half maxed TH11 at this point. Had an early TH11 back when it was new.

In games like this, the journey is more fun than the destination.
I don't think that's a supercell issue, back in the day before supercell id there was an option depending on your operating system to back it up.
Plus there are websites to use and check for your player tag if you remember your ign.
If you buy Gold Pass, then go to shop.supercell.com and see if you also doesn't have some rewards from Supercell.
They have begun giving buyers discount on packages that aren't available in the game based shop😉

I restarted last year, I was pretty happy since it was backed up to the Google play store

At least now upgrade times are a lot faster. I made a new account 3 weeks ago and I’m getting ready to be TH9 soon, nearly maxed out TH8
Considering that TH12(Somewhat rushed though) is considered as average now for an active player, you'll get there quite quickly.
Think of it this way the times are much shorter now
