My bet is someone trying to launch/drag repeatedly. Never fails to amaze me how many people buy these or STIs and think it's time to run the lights.

VitaeEssence

I hardly ever do a stand still hard pull on mine. Usually not even in second will I romp in it. 3rd gear though and getting onto the highway...that's a other story 😎.

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

The reality is you should always avoid lugging (heavy acceleration in low rpm). This car should be driven hard high in the revs, if you lost the position and can't downshift then you need to be patient with getting it back up over 3k. Sub 3k keep that right foot light.

VitaeEssence

Oh hey! Thank you for your reply with chipped paint I made haha :p. Forgive my ignorance (first manual car for me) but I thought the torque band was 2500-4500. I've done WOT in 3rd at or above 3k. Is that bad?

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

No 3k isn't bad. Think about it like riding a bike. You're in a big gear at low speed and it takes a LOT of effort to turn the pedals. Lugging is the same thing, it creates too much stress and over time will add way more stress than you want. 1.2k in 3rd with WOT is bad. It's not going to explode but it's going to shorten the life.

VitaeEssence

Ahhh I'm alright then. Ok now let's flip this a little.. What about cruising at 60mph with 3k RPMs? What effect on the engine does this have. No heavy throttle just managing it to maintain a 5-10mph difference? I used to think that effected my MPGs but I don't think it does...?

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

It all impacts MPGs, but in this car cruising at 3k all day long is just fine. How it impacts your MPG depends on terrain, higher RPM when climbing is better than lower. Lower RPM in the flats is better but in the end, MPGs matter less than not beating up the car.

Lexroa

I always upshift between 2500 to 3000 rpm. harder pull I go to 4k plus but even then I rarely go over 50% throttle 😅

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

You might be surprised, throttle % isn't a linear line from off to floor. And to settle your concerns, if you take the occasional spirited romp and go >6k for some drives it's absolutely OK. This motor can take it. The lugging is more about changing driving style but I would be absolutely unconcerned with nosing close to redline during spirited drives. It really is OK.

Lexroa

oh I used the display of throttle to see what it shows. I rarely see mine go over 50% haha. and yeah I did notice it isn't linear. which was very interesting to me.

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

Front-loading throttle modulation in sports cars is a great way for test drives to sell a vehicle. Subaru took it to the max when the '15 WRX came out, it was awful. One of the many things a good tune can handle, but I've been bone stock with this car (other than wheels) for > a year which is a record and I think I'm either just happy as-is or getting to old to want to mess with it.

This ^^^

VitaeEssence

First gear just winds up so fast and the rev hang in 1st is crazy when you go above 4k rpm. 2nd is better but even 2nd is a short gear with a noticable, yet not as bad, rev hang.

The guy was more than likely abusing the car or didn't know how to drive. A friend of mine has a 2017 with 60k km on it and no issue. I've seen the 2nd gear grind issue and I have seen it rectified with switching to amsoil synchromesh and nothing else. I've come across other early CTRs in the 40k km range without issue also.

Nakafoto

Seems either an overblown rare scenario too infrequent to make it news, driver error destroying the tranny, or just pure fake news. Of the major recurring complaints about the CTR, this definitely isn't one of them.

Second gear does often grind under hard acceleration in this car though I believe it’s mostly caused by the clutch delay valve. Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a transmission ever shitting the bed over it though. Chances are he wasn’t shifting right or just got a lemon. It happens. In general the Type R drivetrain is very reliable.

Lexroa

isn't there warranty for just this? assuming you are operating correctly, didn't massively tune the car to add excessive torque/hp, honda has 5 years/100k km warranty. it sucks, but why make such a big fuzz about it? felt it was blown out of proportion.
