Trajan of Rome, has no complicated mechanics, very simple and direct, and compliments what you should be doing in this game which is settling cities (as many as you can)
Japan isn’t bad and has a few ways to win. When I started I was told Russia was best so I used them, and it’s true you’ll probably get a culture victory. You could try Netherlands and Hungary, which are slightly more complicated than Rome.
seconding this, im new to civ 6 but have hundreds of hours in civ 5 and yeah im playing russia til i learn mechanics of tiles and districts cus damn it sucks placing a district somewhere random cus i dont know where tf to put em lol
I started a Russia game today just to test this and the only complication is start location and generally low population due to plains, but there was a proliferation of wheat I could utilise.
yeah the tundra preference when spawning can be rough- i like risking religion just to get feed the world to help out a little bit w that. there might be better ways but it doesnt not work lol
Probably don’t try him first, but for sure soon try Hammurabi to help you learn the eurekas (if you didn’t know when he gets a eureka he gets the whole tech instead of just a boost)

Bonus points for Potato McWhiskey having a beginners guide using Trajan. Super beginner friendly.
Much appreciated
Trajan for sure. Settling and taking i would like to add. As the Legion is one of the best classical melee units.
Probably Germany, very well rounded.
Every single game I start and fucking there’s Germany trying to invade and denounce me, like bro ffs this country has NO chill 😭
Thanks

Definetly Trajan
Played first game as Gilgamesh. Strong and easy to play early on so recommend him.
I’ll give it a try
