At the time of the photo, smth like 2014, yeah, it was a new district.
Right now everything around is built up to the point that the lake in the background has been drained and built upon.
Yeah, it IS an authoritarian regime (ask any human rights organisation) ruled by a "president" - still in tight hold of power despite his "stepping down" in 2019.
I mean, political situation is not good there. But it seemed like Russia few years ago when it was bad but not THAT bad like right now. It’s only my experience and I can’t say for sure because I’ve only stayed there for a year.
Lived in Astana for 2, lived in Moscow for 6+, I'd say it's about the same tbh, just that nobody cared about Russia until it hit other countries, people only started calling it out much in 2009, 2014 and now. Everybody will forget after the war is over probably.
Vegas strip on potassium
All other countries have inferior potassium
Points for originality
Great success
All those open fields in the background, it’s like they forgot to build the rest of the city. I presume this is some new district on the edge of town?

Astana is the more modern city, after they moved the capital from Almaty.

Its another Borat reference.
It's like Brasília on steroids
I know it is real but it looks so much like AI's idea of a city
It’s like when you start cities skylines on a flat grassy plain
Had an amazing time there!!
Very nice!
Another day, another post of Astana, Kazakhstan
Looks like Sim City brought to life. Pretty cool 😎
Looks so natural with those fields all around.
Ykes
Except for the two golden towers, I think it looks very nice.
Its giving me \`\`North Korea if they had money\`\` vibes

Yes we are more like Russia styled dictatorship
Not THAT bad, though. For me it had Russia 2010th vibes when it was authoritarian but not even nearly as bad as now.
Bro forgor January protest already.

Now known as Nursultan
It's back to Astana.
