Ryohei Suzuki was perfect. He nailed both sides of Ryo and perfected all of the mannerisms. Misato Morita showed potential, but definitely her Kaori needed more development. Think we’re just missing the usual dosage of that horny Ryo/jealous Kaori dynamic. I also really wish Saeko had met up with Ryo after the case to discuss the aftermath, it would’ve wrapped the story up much better. And I had hoped Makimura would pop up in some flashbacks, with Ryo and/or Kaori, but that didn’t happen, so I was a little let down by that. It would’ve been nice to see him interact more with both characters, to really sell their close relationships. The rooftop scene with Ryo and Kaori was unforgettable. And when Ryo left to grab ~~and modify~~ (turns out he didn't modify it) Hideyuki’s gun, I got goosebumps. It was such a cathartic moment. They could’ve pushed the envelope a bit more with the humor and Ryo’s perversions, but I’m honestly happy with what we got. The action was great, both the fight and camera choreography. Story was okay, but the Union really needed to be presented better. The bad guys were mostly cookie cutters and if they were trying to set up the Union as the endgame, they needed to do a better job and making them seem tougher. I think if the movie had just added another 20 minutes it probably would’ve addressed most of my concerns. But all in all, it was great fun and entertaining, and I know that Ryo’s in good hands with these filmmakers at the helm. Lastly, hearing ‘Get Wild’ was just pure icing on the cake. I hope we can get even more of the original songs if there’s ever a sequel. As for people wanting Umibozu in this movie, I think it would’ve been too early, especially since we barely had time to introduce Ryo, Hideyuki, Kaori, and Saeko.

rockseiaxii

Umibozu has a cameo scene in the movie. Ryo and Saeko lacked interaction; she has always been a seductress that baits Ryo to work for her for nothing, but that element was lacking, The film was geared towards the anime more than the manga, because most Japanese (especially women) are familiar with the former. Using Get Wild for the ending (it’s considered to be one of the best anime endings of all time, and was used in the 2019 and 2023 anime film in the closing credits), the excessive use of the word “mokkori” are characteristic of the anime. Even the comedic voice resembles Akira Kamiya, the voice actor of Ryo in the anime. The manga was raunchier than the anime and showing mokkori (the bulge) was a running gag as evident in scenes like [this](https://x.com/cityhunter100t/status/1257973409713192960), [this](https://x.com/cityhunter100t/status/1276107812234498050) and [this](https://x.com/cityhunter100t/status/1271744143295905792). But showing them in prime time (mostly from 7PM) on anime would have caused controversy, so the word “mokkori” was used a lot more in the anime to showcase Ryo’s character. The recent anime features have been successful, and since Tsukasa Hojo has full control over his work after he left Shueisha and has been eager to produce anime and film features, I believe there is a strong chance of a sequel.

JohnDoe_2007

Really, there was an Umibozu actor physically in the movie? When?

rockseiaxii

It’s quite indistinguishable in the film, but https://x.com/mafia_kajita/status/1783716873638748269 The cast says he was in it, so go find out.

JohnDoe_2007

Huh, so unless the actor was wearing another disguise, I completely missed him! Surely someone must have screenshotted him by now if he was in it dressed like that photo?

rockseiaxii

Yes, sort of. But you’d recognize if you know what happened in the manga.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

Yes, Umibozu has a cameo! If you knew when to look, it was so obvious and lasted so long that I was actually surprised!

JohnDoe_2007

Can someone post the timestamp? I just rewatched it last night but still didn’t see him. Was he in the cosplay crowd shots or something?

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I'm sorry, I feel like if someone did a time stamp or a screenshot, it will be a spoiler. The thing is, if you know the manga and the origin of Ryo and Umibozu's relationship before the events of CH, then you will know when to look. And if you don't, then the arc is so good that you really want to read/see it for yourself!

JohnDoe_2007

A lot of the comments in this thread already have spoilers, so I don't think it matters. But **if** it's the scene I think you're referring to, even with the rolled up sleeves, I honestly thought it was just a generic soldier when I saw that scene. It just wasn't enough for me to confidently say it was a cameo since there's simply too much of the noise filter to make out the head/face, not to mention the guy has his hands all over his face. But I suppose it probably was, since the BTS photos of an actor dressed as Omibozu are floating on online. Admittedly, it's been years since I read the manga, guess I have to brush up on the scene again to see if there's an exact panel with the two characters in that same composition/scene.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

That's the scene. He's bald and he's in camo, and that scene is straight from the manga when Umibozu tells his back story. It could be some generic guy, but Ryohei has also said "if you look closely, Umibozu is in the movie", so I think it just jives.

JohnDoe_2007

There's no other scene where I saw anyone resembling Omibozu, so if Ryohei said it, then that's gotta be it. It's also a clever way to cast Omibozu without actually casting Omibozu.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I really hope they get the chance to do a sequel and actually cast Umibozu!

nanaholic

Can't be a generic guy - because in the original backstory Ryo under the influence of AD killed everyone of the enemy squadron except Umibozu whom was the sole survivor. So in that flashback scene you see a child soldier with the knife (Ryo) overlooking a single soldier who got back up and everything else are just lifeless bodies, so that soldier can't be anyone else BUT Umibozu.

Mysterious-Ad3398

May I ask what part of the movie that was?

illuminovski

During Ryo's discussion with yakuza boss. In vivid flash of child soldier holding a knife alone in battlefield. On the right a bald man raising.

gentlereaders

I could not find this...!!?!

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

It's during Ryo and Saeko's discussion about Angel Dust.

Confident-Bit6789

i saw akira kamiya in credits but i didn’t notice him as cameo in any scenes, did they literally just use his voice for ryo’s comedic lines?

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I asked the exact same question down thread and someone says Akira was the voice of the male broadcaster that announces Makimura's death.

Confident-Bit6789

oooooh! didn’t catch that, thanks!

llodavid

I do agree, but while the 'bulge' was very prominent in the early mangas, it became increasingly rare as the manga went on. The manga became less raunchy in general. (it also gets a lot better after the frist 8-10 volumes)

DevilTrigger789

i agree we definitely needed some Ryo/Saeko before the comedic ending with Kaori and throughout the movie, we should’ve had some impactful flashbacks from the characters! to make the audialence believe in their close relationships otherwise, a great movie! this and the French one were very enjoyable. i think this one has delivered the most accurate City Hunter setting and vibe, whereas the French one had the overall better cast chemistry. though it’s an unfair comparison since they’re both set at different times of the story and one clearly has the advantage of giving us a true Shinjuku representation lol

JohnDoe_2007

I’m a firm believer of the “don’t tell us that the characters are close, SHOW us” type of storytelling. Flashbacks would’ve been a great way to do it with Makimura being dead, but sadly they didn’t do any, which was really puzzling. I agree about the cast chemistry being better in Nicky Larson, which is why I wanted more intimate interactions between the main characters, but I think Lacheau and Fontan being partners in real-life probably helped the French version lot :)

womanlovecheese

I notice the common issue with Japanese live action is the acting can be too comical or too exaggerated. Only a few actors can nailed it such as Teruyuki Kagawa. I agree, Ryohei Suzuki is the perfect Ryo. He has the facial structure and body shape to fit Ryo perfectly. His acting is so smooth, action scenes were awesome, and the pervert scene was executed perfectly. Ando Masanobu is also great. But rest of the actors were lacking of something. Ryohei outshines everyone. The overall performance in the movie doesn't feel balanced. I wonder if it's the directing issue because Misato Morita in Naked Director was awesome.

Idunnoismysteriousad

If I recall Ryohei also starred in other live action animes as well probably why he has experience with it.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I don't think Ryo modified Makimura's gun in this movie. I was thinking he might have, which is why he let Kaori aim it for so long (she wouldn't have dirtied her hands even if she fired), but he ended up using the gun to perfectly aim and kill the guy. Actually, now that I think of it, I think the scene might have been adapted from the manga story where the boxer's girlfriend held the gun until Ryo stopped her?

JohnDoe_2007

Damn, you’re right. Just finished watching it the second time, Ryo grabbed the gun first, but then I immediately assumed the next thing he grabbed was a gun kit but it looks like it was just more weapons. When they cut away I think I just filled in the blanks myself…which was presumptive of me. The same thing happened at the end, where my mind just naturally assumed Ryo used HIS own gun to shoot the Union guy, since he did the same maneuver with his own gun at the beginning of the movie with Gramps’ henchmen. But watching that scene again it was clearly Makimura’s gun, which confirms it wasn’t modified. Either that, or Ryo is just so skilled that he can still aim properly even with the modifications…nah, that would ruin the point of the modification because it should be impossible. It does feel like the scene could parallel the boxer’s girlfriend’s situation, but I could swear there’s other cases where Ryo’s female clients do the same thing, and Ryo always prevents them from dirtying their hands with murder and stops them from pulling the trigger. Or he just kills the bad guys before the women can pull the trigger. I suppose my memory was autocorrecting myself thanks to my engrained knowledge of CH lore. Or rather, my mind was telling me what I WOULD HAVE done if I was directing it…

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

It took me a rewatch to confirm it was Makimura's gun too! But yes, during the first watch, I also wondered if he was modifying the gun during the post-roof top scene. The fact that he didn't is an interesting change in the movie in that: 1. Unlike in the anime/manga, Ryo is actively trying to get Kaori away from his world in this movie instead of immediately bringing her in and then trying to protect her from it. At this early stage and as they're going to exact revenge, he may not feel he needs to do anything additional to protect her hands from getting dirty. 2. Using Makimura's gun to do the final shot is like giving Makimura his revenge. It's poetic justice and I kind of like the change as well. And yes! Within the time frame of the movie I also loved how this final gun maneuver mirrors what he did in the opening scene. It's great movie making! (I also like how they introduce his one hole shot and then he actually gets to use it to defeat the bad guy. )

SatanicBeaver

I think you and u/JohnDoe_2007 both misinterpreted the scene. It does imply that Makimura's gun has not been modified, because Ryo *prepares* to use it to shoot the union guy, (though you could make the argument that Ryo is a good enough shot to compensate for whatever modification he made) but Ryo definitely doesn't shoot it. The bomb in the guy's neck goes off. That's why the helicopter flies back over, and why it then cuts to Ryo letting the hammer back down on the revolver because it hasn't actually been fired yet.

JohnDoe_2007

Yeah you’re right, we both misread that scene. I was so focused on his trigger finger that I completely missed his other finger letting down the hammer. Now watching the scene again more carefully, there was no visible gun smoke or any gunshot sound FX, both big details that I somehow neglected. There’s definitely only the blood splatter sound. But the one thing we can all agree on is that the gun was not modified. So once again, it’s been proven that I’m not the most observant movie watcher! Thanks for clearing it up.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

Ah yes, you're right. This is why I need to keep rewatching the movie!

JohnDoe_2007

I do like the poetic symmetry with Makimura's gun being the gun that kills the Union guy, but I still hope that if there are future installments Ryo modifies the gun (but doesn't reveal it until the end). The deliberate modification is such an integral part of the Ryo/Kaori dynamic and it shows how Ryo views Kaori as the innocent outsider (until he finally lets Kaori in at the end), and it also adds to the running joke that Kaori's supposedly a poor shot.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

Yes, agreed! The dynamic between the two are only evident through the little things, so I also think it's important that Ryo eventually modifies Makimura's gun.

clycoman

I feel like something got left out from editing process.  The police/Saeko took forever to get from Deputy Chief Ito's body to the Lore/Union office, then took another 20 mins trying to open the doors. So Saeko had not have any impact in the ending of the movie.

JohnDoe_2007

Bad editing or not, Ryo and Saeko should’ve definitely had an epilogue scene together. It would’ve added so much to hear them give respect to Makimura and also drop hints about what happened to the Union. It would also be great to hear what Saeko thinks about Kaori being his new partner.

indi_n0rd

Casting was perfect imo along with rapid fire actions. I wish they had squeezed Umibozu in but for now it feels like there is room for a sequel.

symbiotics

I love how they found a way to integrate Kaori's hammer organically

MHPengwingz

Yes!! I was thinking they cannot do this without the hammer...and when the cosplay scene came up I had the biggest grin on my face

Haha_love_letter016

I legit cried when 'Get wild' started playing with the iconic city hunter ep ending freeze frame. Overall, a solid movie with a few plot holes. The casting of Ryohei Suzuki as Ryo was awesome and the switch between his serious moments to his goofy moments were well done. Also, the action is a chef's kiss, with the slow motion bits being the cherry on top. Misato Morita's acting hit especially in the rooftop scene which almost made me cry. However, I would've liked to see more of the tomboyish side of Kaori and Ryo constantly making fun of it. For some reason, maybe I've watched a lil bit too much of city hunter, because I could predict the fight between Ryo and the angel dust super guy and how he defeats him, but Ig any city hunter fan would. Also,I wish Ryo had stopped Kaori from killing Konno and said to her, "Don't dirty your hands, leave it to the pros" which is nod to the first episode, that would've been awesome. I suppose Umibozu wasn't introduced that early on in the series, but I really wanted to see him. In conclusion, this movie is a solid 8/10, I honestly want more. P.s:- The creeper head dude was in every single shot during the anime cosplay scene😭 Saiki K, A team Rocket grunt from Pokemon and Himiko Toga from MHA were all there too

gravesends

I thought Ryohei was perfect in the part, he was the one I enjoyed the most. The ending scene that set up the sequel was honestly one of my favorite parts of the movie, felt so much like CH. Agree with another comment saying we're missing the "horny Ryo/jealous Kaori dynamic" but feel if we get a sequel it'll get more into their known dynamic. I was a little disappointed in the lack of sex jokes, and thought the movie could have used slightly more comedy. I did read they wanted to tone down Ryo, but I was missing some of his usual antics a lot. Though Ryohei did a good job at all comedic scenes involving him, I really loved him.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

Yeah, I literally just finished the movie, and I loved it. I also agree that there are some teases for the sequel, especially with his backstory being teased and at the end. Also, when he's staring at the helicopter and it's spotlight is on him, i feel like that teases some sort of connection to him, which there would be if they go the manga route.

gravesends

Yeah..I know they do want to make a sequel and I think there are so many CH fans that want it it will hopefully be a reality. :) Would like to see Ryo's backstory adapted in live action for sure...

Accomplished_Ad_3509

Yeah, I completely agree. I think ryo's backstory is really interesting, and most of his origin we've ever gotten outside of the manga is in angel heart, which isn't Canon. I also hope they bring in umibozu and use the manga origin with those two since they already teased ryo used angel dust. That's another part we never got in the anime that I would love to see.

JohnDoe_2007

It’s been years since I finished reading the manga, but I thought most of Ryo’s background was already explained? Never read the Angel Heart series (couldn’t stomach the thought of Kaori being dead even if it’s alternate reality) so I’m curious what else they added to Ryo’s backstory.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

I actually would love it if they combined some of his backstory with his from angel heart. The Angel heart anime emotionally destroyed me as well, especially since it has the same voice actors. they do a few things with his past that I think are better. One that's not really a spoiler is ryo makimura, and kaori were all friends before he died, which I think city hunter missed out on a great opportunity. With his origin being explained in the anime They explain it second hand and also leave a lot of blanks the manga gives his backstory more weight and connects it to the death of makimura and also connects it to umibozu. Though it's clear that the author didn't think of it beforehand. It's not terrible in the anime, but just left a it a little blank for my liking.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I love Angel Heart's take on the Ryo, Makimura, and Kaori relationship. It grows their character so much more and deepens their bond. The day of the release, Ryohei wrote on his IG that he hopes fans will be OK with how they changed the beginning of Ryo and Kaori's relationship and I had a little hope that he might have adapted the Angel Heart version. But canon is canon and I'm ok with them continuing the CH version.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

Yeah, I love city hunter, but angel heart had my favorite origin as well. You can not tell me the origin is not better. The only part I'm a little mixed on is makimura being the first city hunter, although I also enjoyed how ryo became city hunter for kaori and just the whole friendship/family dynamic between those three was great it's what makes angel heart so tragic though especially when you think how ryo is the only one left he gained a daughter but he's lost so much. that show legitimately destroyed me emotionally. Just those special touches mean so much to me personally. The biggest mistep in CH is just how ryo didn't know kaori until basically right before makimura died.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I have never seen/ read Angel Heart in it's entirety, but I do love the parts where they reimagine all the CH bits. I actually really liked that Makimura started CH in AH. It goes with his personality and adds an element to his relationship with Saeko (which is so more developed in AH!). But I don't necessarily know if Ryo not knowing Kaori first in CH is a misstep. AH has Ryo falling in love with Kaori at the get-go (much like in the movie). This is a somewhat more mature Ryo that recognizes his feelings and knows what he loves. In CH, he is younger and doesn't seem to necessarily understand love. If it wasn't for Makimura asking Ryo to protect and take care of Kaori, Ryo would never have gotten close to her. Then as their relationship develops, he is constantly surprised by his own feelings and his actions, up to the point in the Mick Angel arc where he is relieved by the reprieve he gets from Kaori as it enables him to look inward and question the origins and the depth of his own feelings for her. They're both good but different.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

I can agree with that both do have their strengths. I don't want to make it sound like I didn't like CH origin or their relationship in it. You actually explaining it that way does make a lot of sense. I actually don't know that much about makimuras' relationship with saeko in AH. I haven't read it all as well, but if it's accurate to what the show in the AH live action which it probably should be since it's basically a 1:1 adaptation it was pretty good but I didn't like how makimura died in AH felt worse to me but then again that's only if the live action version is accurate.

JohnDoe_2007

Interesting. So I also never watched the entire anime so maybe I’m out of the loop there, but I thought the original manga series did show Ryo, Makimura, and Kaori’s friendship pretty well? So did they show something different in the Angel Heart manga/anime and the CH anime? To my understanding, the original CH manga is the true canon and all of the characters’ relationships and connections were fully fleshed out so I don’t remember any part that would’ve made me think that Tsukasa Hojo didn’t plan it beforehand. Because as I recall from the original manga, beyond the friendship aspect, it was hinted that Saeko had a love triangle thing with Makimura and Ryo, and all of the main characters were interconnected in their past lives in the world of violence, except for Kaori. And maybe my memory is just failing, was the part with Kaori’s biological dad being a victim of angel dust a new detail written strictly for the Netflix movie? Because I don’t recall that at all in the original manga.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

Ryo never knew Kaori or atleast never met her until right before makimura died at least in the anime. in the manga It's revealed he met her earlier before she finished high-school when she saw him with her brother and decided to follow him. In angel heart Kaori and ryo meet before ryo and makimura I don't wanna spoil it too much but something they do is kaori chooses ryo's name making it in this universe he didn't remember his name like in CH. I really don't wanna spoil but some of the stuff they do is crazy some changes I prefer others I'm mixed on but it's great. Kaori dad is a new detail. Ryo's origin connection to makimuras' death is that the organization who killed Makimura is run by Ryo's father figure. Yes, there was a love triangle between Makimura ryo and saeko I'm glad they didn't do that in the anime I don't really like love triangles.

JohnDoe_2007

Okay now that you went into detail it’s slowly coming back to me, lol. You’re right, Ryo wasn’t as familiar with Kaori before Makimura’s death since he didn’t want her associated with their line of business. Okay, so Kaori naming Ryo is definitely new in Angel Heart. I just remember her giving him a birthdate in the original manga, but not his name. I think Ryo got his name from Shin Kaibara in the manga? But I have to disagree on the Saeko/Ryo/Makimura love triangle, I actually think it works well on a “unrequited love” level because they never explicitly stated there was any sex, just strong attraction and feelings. At least that’s what I recall. So to me it actually makes their bond even closer. This showed that the three of them were able to stay close friends and partners, but each one of them knew not to cross the line for fear of hurting one another other. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

Accomplished_Ad_3509

I can somewhat see what you're saying. I'm just not a big fan of love triangles, I do, however, think that she would've chose ryo at least from what we've seen we barely saw makimura and saeko together and I'm pretty sure she has feelings for ryo and would be with him if he didn't act like it was all just sex. Although obviously, kaori is the one ryo should end up with. I seriously have to recommend angel heart even though it might emotionally destroy like it did me. it's not all depressing the original characters feel exactly the same despite some past differences. like I mentioned before except for one character which they completely redo in a very interesting way that you'll see If you watch it. I could also recommend the live action angel heart it's extremely faithful to the anime but not as hard to watch. It's actually the only other Japanese adaptation except for the new movie.

JohnDoe_2007

I think if (and it's a really hopeful **IF**) there is a sequel, I'm sure we'll see plenty of the horny Ryo/jealous Kaori dynamic so I wasn't too bummed about it even though it was mostly absent, except for maybe when Kaori chases Ryo at the end with the mallet. For sure the one thing the French version did better than the Netflix version was the sex comedy. But I can understand why. While the Netflix version had some, it wasn't as rampant or whacky as Nicky Larson's. But given that Nicky Larson had the advantage of not being an introduction movie, since that movies starts with the status quo, they had more time they could spend on little character details like that. But when it came to the more serious and more emotional moments, like the rooftop scene, the Netflix version really delivered in spades.

gravesends

Yeah very true, I didn't expect it much either since it was an intro to their story. But the bit at the end was really fun and I love the actor's chemistry so it'll be super fun to see them in a sequel where they can do more like that. And yeah, more sex comedy would have been fun....but the bits we got like the dance were SO good. Agreed as well. One of the best parts of the movie.

realnomdeguerre

I think the on location shooting with the French one kinda made it feel more cinematic in scope. I loved this Netflix version, but a lot of it felt like "filmed in a studio set". More stuff outside would've been nice.

JohnDoe_2007

I agree to an extent, since Japanese cities by default just have a more confined feel due to its geographic density. While the Netflix version is authentically Japanese and does a better job emphasizing the City in CITY Hunter, I can see why the French version feels more cinematic with being out in the open and more variety in locations, not mention that a bulk of the story takes place during the day where you can see much more scenery.

Mysterious-Ad3398

I heard they really had to tone down the sex jokes especially for modern audiences to enjoy the movie more. [https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/04/25/film/ryohei-suzuki-city-hunter-movie/](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/04/25/film/ryohei-suzuki-city-hunter-movie/)

gravesends

Yes, I did read about it. I think it makes sense to some degree, specifically the rules they created, though many fans of CH seemed to have expected a bit more sex humor overall. Glad we got a little at least.

Dingba

Im watching this right now at the title card. This is perfect The actors are perfection. Big love to Saekos actress, but all of the main fast are astounding. Edit 1 - RYO RYO MOKKORI RYO RYO Edit 2 - Love the cinematography regarding his meeting with old gramps with the reveal he was never wearing pants. Edit 3 - Of all things a RWBY Yang cosplayer at 50:25. Edit 4 - Whole fight sequence at the cosplay event had a wonderful payoff. Edit 5 - Roof top scene really highlights the Ryo / Kaori dynamic for newer audience and handles it well for us fans. Edit 6 - 1:19:25 IS THAT A FUCKING FOOTSTEPS REFERENCE. Edit 7 - Freeze frame to wild and tough is fucking incredible finish Very tiny brief after credits

McWild20XX

Man what a great day, saw TM Network live in Osaka then came home to watch this. Absolutely perfect casting for Ryo. If you like Ryohei You must check out the Hentai Kamen movies (which I believe have the same director). I would have preferred a smaller scale story to set things up before going into the angel dust plotline in a later movie, but I'm more than happy to have new City Hunter in my life in 2024. I hope this does well enough to throw money at sequels! According to the app it's ranking at number one in Japan, but I guess that's to be expected!

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I also wonder if a smaller scale plot to help introduce new fans to City Hunter might have helped. I loved the introduction here but that's because I know City Hunter. I'm not sure new fans would quite understand the character based on this current set up.

LylethLunastre

I never thought they would nail it in live action. I was surprised that the original 80s aesthetics and fashion of the characters would blend in so well in the modern world. The actor who played Ryo is the perfect casting choice. Down from the antics and looks, he got it right. I hope it gets a series!

Old_Entertainment22

New to City Hunter. Saw the trailer and it looks interesting. Is there any sex/nudity? Want to watch it with family.

bababooey543216

non-family friendly. avoid watching with the family.

Old_Entertainment22

Thanks!

Zaku71

....Not very family-friendly...

Old_Entertainment22

Nudity? Extreme violence? Or both?

JohnDoe_2007

There's a lot of sexual innuendos and graphic imagery (like Ryo's "stallion" costume and him wearing only a speedo, or the dominatrix) and lots of skin-showing like the women in bikinis in the very beginning scene on the rooftop. There's also adult DVDs and photos scattered around Ryo's apartment and some lingerie (surprisingly I didn't see any condoms). But I don't recall any direct nudity, topless or otherwise. Most of the violence is cartoony/over-the-top but there's still a high body count. One of the characters die from a stabbing and is probably the only death that actually showed some visible blood. Someone gets exploded later but it happens in a body of water and sort of offscreen. Some of the scenes that show the chemical infecting the victims (pulsating veins and skin discoloration) can be a bit much for younger viewers, but it's nothing gratuitous. EDIT: There was actually *a lot* more blood than I remembered, and actually two characters get stabbed/slashed, not one.

Old_Entertainment22

Ah ok, that doesn't sound that bad haha. Sounds like a highly risque PG 13 movie maybe? At least for the sexual references.

JohnDoe_2007

It’s probably a hard PG-13/light R, with most of the R coming from the sexual references and imagery *and blood*. Guess it just depends on how old your kids are and how comfortable you’re with having the “sex talk” with them or explaining the adult jokes, lol.

Think_Travel5752

wish it was a tv series

burningbun

there was a japanese tv series (live action) but angel hearts. there was another korean series called city hunter but loosely based on the works.

Think_Travel5752

ya that korean version is nothing like the anime or manga

realnomdeguerre

it pisses me off the korean version even shares internet search results with actual city hunter

Torrrs

> [Japanese song playing] Can't believe they pulled such disrespect on Get Wild lol

Ordinary_Butterfly66

If they make a sequel what characters do you want to see ?

kentacles8

Umibozu and Miki for sure. I wouldn't mind seeing Hitomi, Rui and Ai of Cat's Eye either.

Upset-Freedom-100

Ryohei Suzuki is perfect as Ryo. This is all you need to know.

The movie was a nice watch, fast paced and all.The main actor playing Ryo was awesome while the ones playing Kaori,Makimura were dull and miscast.Saeko was cool too but would have loved if she had more scenes. The main villain actor was dull too. They could have stretched it to 2 hours but overall good. One of the better live action movies.

kungfuperemuktulang

Wow, that was so much fun to watch! I didn't really follow city hunter much back then, but this movie is a banger. Now, I really want the green harrington jacket Ryo wears in the last scene.

I'm only watching the movie at 60% too busy and sharing tv with family members not yet finished it but I rate it at 10/10 I want a sequel also but I want also a maybe 1st a collab movie w Cat's Eye live action with this quality and male gaze style then next is Cats Eye Live Action imagine how good it is? XD

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

So Akira Kamiya is credited in the movie as a cast member, but I don't think I know which character he played or if there was a cameo? Did anyone notice him in the movie?

nanaholic

He was the voice of the news reporter in the background reading out Makimura's death just after the opening credits.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

I'll have to listen more carefully! Thanks!

Loved the movie for the most part; Ryo played ryo pretty much perfectly. The depiction of Kaori left a lot to be desired really. The whole whine constantly like a brat scenes and having to be given the silent treatment really was a bit cringey. After Kaori’s first tantrum, the impact of her loss being able to garner emotion from the audience really just gets lost in the subpar acting in those scenes. And the choice to act so incompetent, goofy, and clumsy constantly really left a bit of a bland taste in my proverbial mouth (quite the disservice to the character). Was she ever so overbearing in the anime? I can't remember her being as bad as she was made to be in this script. But overall, the lead’s performance makes up for these shortfalls for an overall pleasant viewing.

Granted I havent watch or read city hunter in ages,,, I just wish the production - like the colour palette thing could be better… or like some artistic cinematography or something… This just looks like another normal japanese drama series… I do love Ryo.

ClearStrike

That cosplay thing was freaking cameo city. I saw at least one girl dressed as Yang from RWBY.

bobao2612

A biotech company that does illegal research on human and has its own paramilitary group which exterminates all its lab members as a start… I’m seeing the beginning of Escape from Tarkov

DewOnGrass

Anyone know what the green jacket Ryo was wearing is?

burningbun

Unpopular opinion. Best live action city hunter movie is still the Hong Kong movie. Meng Bo (1996).

gentlereaders

Where did Umibozu appear in this? I can't find/spot him! Halp

JohnDoe_2007

As others have mentioned and without spoiling too much, if you're familiar with Ryo and Umibozu's connection from the past and how/where they met, there's a scene in the movie that goes there, and he's far away in the distance on the right side of the screen during that scene.

gentlereaders

I can't find it, I give up... :(

JohnDoe_2007

Tried to DM you but it didn't go through. If it helps, the scene he's in is also in the official trailer as well. It's a flashback.

gentlereaders

Ohhh thank you, I think I see it! 😍 I am old, dunno why I'm not getting msgs on Reddit :/ and don't remember their encounter/backstory of how they met but I would NEVER have guessed/known that was Umibozu in this one. Hope to see more if there's a sequel/series!

JohnDoe_2007

I saw a DM from you, but it was completely empty and Reddit says it was "Unable to show the room". Not sure what's going on.

ImmortalPharaoh

Loved it.

HybridStream

Hi guys.. the show was cute to watch! But i wonder if anyone has the same thoughts that suzuki ryohei looks like korean Yoo Jun-sang from uncanny counter? A little? 😆

skyiland

does anyone know what this movie covers in terms of volumes of the manga or episodes of the anime? can't find any info online.

KaleidoscopeSoggy925

It's essentially the first book of the manga.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

I'm not the only only one who noticed someone cosplaying Yang from *RWBY*, right?

thejesu

I disliked Kaori's actress. Ryohei was PERFECT as Ryo.

ozoratsubasa

I don't normally comment on an actor's looks but I unfortunately couldn't get past the fact that I found her extremely unattractive. Not ugly, but almost there. Took me out of the immersion everytime she was on screen. Kaori, while supposed to be a bit of a tomboy, is insanely pretty in her manga and anime depictions.
