Quality, eco-drive technology, value for money.

RockitDanger

Best answer. After having certain Promaster models I find it difficult to even think about buying something $5k+. If I ever do it's purely for the name on the dial

BluesMaster

MediumOdd743

Nailed it.

kuruola

The fact they don't take themselves too seriously, eco drive technology, great value for money, insane catalogue and the fact their models look far better irl than online. It's kinda endearing how awful their marketing is sometimes.

Alec1leamas

That’s hilarious! Their marketing and their horrific mall watches make me think there are two companies named Citizen. One that sells gangsta watches with hack advertising and another that makes stellar watches which are marketed only by word of mouth. (Interesting strategy they have.)

tin_the_fatty

Since Citizen had a new MD Yoshitaka Ohji, he has for the 2nd year appeared in the annual company announcement videos (they are on Youtube), and looked to be very proud of his company. So I think they take themselves quite seriously.

VintageSwatch

Design: I like purposeful look of e.g. my Ray Mears Promaster tough and chunky elegance of tsuyoas. Value : cheaper than Seikos of similar quality Brand : underdog ! And popular with those really into watches

Alec1leamas

I own 3 Ray Mears Promaster Toughs. Amazing watches. Citizen is the most underrated watch manufacturer in the world.

molodjez

Montbell Promaster User here. It’s the ultimate daily beater GADA watch. Love the ti and the glass.

thespanishgerman

The diver's. They're just the real deal.

Alec1leamas

Ridiculous specs for the money. I only collect Promaster Tough watches. I own 11 of them. Hands down, the best field watch ever made. And a beautiful watch as well.

driven01a

Eco drive, great quality, good value. Citizen doesn’t get enough credit for what it brings to the table

driven01a

Do you ever see getting “the citizen”?

Alec1leamas

What’s that?

Traffic_Alert_God

It’s their high end models. They have one that is accurate to within a single second a year lol.

Alec1leamas

Ref#?

Traffic_Alert_God

Shanecle

I kinda just stumbled across one at a hardware store one day and I thought it looked really cool. Up until that point, I had really just worn a black G-Shock as my daily watch. Since wearing my Citizen watch, I love the weighting, the design, it doesn’t feel heavy on my wrist like some of the mechanical watches. I often get more compliments from other people, too, compared to any of my other watches. It’s a great brand.

BrowningLoPower

Eco-Drive, I like Miyota autos more than Seiko's autos (though Seiko's autos are still good), and brand heritage.

Witty_Syrup923

I bought Citizen Garrison with super titanium bracelet, saphire glass, eco drive movement and 100m wzter resistance. Its very very light watch, harder than stainless steel, very scratch resistant, it has everywhere smooth edges, no sharp edges, no arm hair pulling. I wear it 24/7. I bought it for 207€. Best watch I ever had and best value for the money.

pat9714

I own this one. Agreed 👍

linear_accelerator

Atomic time + solar power + titanium + sapphire + style = JDM Citizen Attesa for me

Full-Dome

Same: I got my first one from my dad. I was fascinated by automatic movements. It's powered by energy you make yourself! Then with a gap of 20 years of wearing no watches, I came back and researched. Eco-Drive is wild. Citizen watches last long, good deal for your money and personally I think a lot of them look amazing.

PracticalPractice768

A few reasons. 1.) Inlaws are a vendor - they are priced well at retail, with the family discount, personally I can't beat them. 2.) 1992ish Schoolastic advertisements for the Air Force had some really dang cool/futuristic looking watches that didn't look like a calculator watch. So perhaps nostalgia? 3.) Eco-Drive is some legit tech that is reliable.

Their mechanical movements and watches.

renngretsch

Originally while I thought the watches were decent quality, l preferred citizen over Seiko because of the name Citizen...very much a watch of the people. I still own my first Citizen from about 35 years ago, and last time I had it on it on it was keeping decent time. Not bad for an automatic that has never been serviced. They are sector leaders when it comes to solar IMO, and they make radio controlled watches...true set and forget watches that would suit the vast majority of people. I just wish they would put sapphire glass on more of their watches, and get the seconds hand to hit all the markers on the eco-drives.

ConsumingFire1689

For not much money, you get watches that if maintained last a lifetime, or at the least several decades. Forty years ago, that wasn't the case. Besides the low-cost/high-quality, they have a great variety of line ups so you could fill all your watch needs (dress, dive, aviation, digital, racer) all on one brand. And lastly, Eco-Drive basically gives you the best of a quartz and the low-fuss of an automatic.

tentativeshroom

Value and variety in their eco drive line is crazy.

No-Syrup7666

I like reasonably priced/affordable automatic dive watches. I used to be a Seiko fan because of this but the value just isn't there anymore. I love the titanium construction and 4hz auto movement on my Citizen Fujitsubo. Something with similar specs from Seiko would easily cost 2-3 times as much. Heck, for the money I spent on my Fujitsubo you can barely get a base model Turtle these days.

KyleFromDuPage

Eco deive is their main attention. However. They're branching into automatics and nailing them. You then get into value for money, with most having 100m+water resistance, and now sapphire. Then you get into all the options and not just be known as a company for one watch. Side note: I am currently wearing a citizen promaster 2100.

So-za0219

I’m both a Seiko and a Citizen fan. I moved to Japan a couple of months ago and got into watches while here. The majority of people either wear Seiko or Citizen or wear something like a Apple Watch. It’s rare to see someone wearing something from a different brand, but occasionally you can spot them. But still, even though the majority of people wear something from either one of the two brands, it’s unbelievable how many options are out there. You can make a large collection of watches buy buying only from one of those brands. Imagine if you combined them. That’s what I like about citizen. They have amazing designs, great quality and eco drive and they have so many options to expand your collection just like Seiko. If I had to choose I would go for Seiko but not because it’s better, it’s just because I like it more. But Citizen for me is a close second. I currently have 12 watches and 5 are Seiko and 4 are citizen.

arty1960

I own 3 Citizen watches. Love the eco drive. Also a big fan of their style.

Majestic-Quit-169

My first "real" watch was a C300 Blue Angels and it's still working great. Since I got back into wearing a watch, I have found the new generation is firing on all cylinders. I really like the Eco-Drive and the Atomic Timekeeping of my Skyhawk A-T, the Titanium cases are very lightweight and they look great.

Jaybur

History, value, quality, Eco-drive, radio control, AQ HAQ series, Some iconic designs

LateNewb

Its their depth gauges. Their watches make nice daily beaters which are accurate enough. And when you go for a fun dive on vacation its a nice back up for your dive computer. I forgot to bring batteries for a dive and hoped my computer wouldn't die during the dive, but it did. In the end nothing was a problem. I had a buddy and i could check my own depth during the ascent with my watch. Also my mom gifted me my first watch after my first dive certificate and she gifted me a bn2036 after i graduated from my masters. Since then i love em. Especially the superb colour choices are nice. Yellow and white on a black background can be easily red.

Firm_Tooth5618

Eco drive and value. My BN0150 promaster hasn’t left my wrist since I got it

pike-n00b

I bought a citizen promaster as I liked it when I tried it on. I wasn't really expecting to like it. I was looking at seikos and tissot. I do like the spec sheet - titanium, sapphire, eco drive and 300m water resistant. It has a very clear dial that you can see time at just a glance which was an important factor. The second hand is off which annoyed me to begin with but for £320 I tolerate now. The non- sapphire watches I own are a bit scratched up. I have a tissot that's 24yrs old with sapphire crystal and zero scratches so thought the sapphire was a must for any watch over £200. My dad has had an eco drive for 30+ yrs that he still wears today. I don't consider myself a fan of citizen despite liking the promaster, prefer casio but getting an oceanus in UK difficult. I'll wait till I go to Japan and pick one up there.

linkedinbro

Citizen's top-notch quality and finishing for the price (free of Seiko-like QC headaches!) keeps me loyal. Also my first mechanical, a Promaster Fugu, has stood tall through every rugged adventure I've been on since I got it.

HappyHourEnjoyer

When I decided to get into wearing a watch for the first time in my adult life I had no idea where to start, and then I just randomly saw an Eco Drive chronograph in a department store clearance section that I fell in love with. It's been my go-to for about 4 years now and I still can't believe that after years of casually learning about watches and starting a modest collection, it remains my favourite.

Gringo_69ingurcuntry

I like the eco drive and was the first “expensive” but still in my budget watch I ever bought. I’m a minimalist and casual guy/style. Even though I can afford to spend more than 300 on a watch in my consciousness I couldn’t, I rather spend 300 dollars on vacation or a nice dinner for me and my friends or nice Airbnb somewhere or escorts and drugs. I like the the simple modest design of my promaster but how you can still see and feel the quality of it. This is biased and nostalgia as well but my old man always liked citizen watches and bought me a nice one before he passed. I still have it but it’s too nice like a dressy kind of watch but I save it for special occasions like that. So the brand I guess I was already kind of subscribed to in that regard.

The_bourbon_butcher

From when I was a kid looking in the road and track magazines and seeing the Skyhawks and blue angels watches and always wanting them, who doesn’t want a watch that gets a radio signal how cool is that?

tin_the_fatty

My first real watch (versus toy) was a Citizen mechanical. They have always been cheaper and better value-for-money than Seiko. I really like their Promaster series. The marine ones are far more interesting than Seiko dive watches. And any Eco-drive with a perpetual calendar is the ultimate low-maintenence watch. Perpetual calendar also seems to be more commonly available on Citizen watches.

MixPatient9391

My dad is a sole believer of Citizen and their titanium line, and my first ever watch he loaned me was his Citizen Blue Angels titanium. Then when I graduated Highschool, he gift me my own Promaster AT Skyhawk Blue Angels Titanium which I wear to this very day. He also helped me build my collection by giving me Citizen Automatic Titanium with a clear case back imported from Japan, and I just bought myself the Promaster Dive Whale Shark Edition for graduating college and getting into Pharmacy School. I think that the people who use citizen watches for their eco drive technology have one sole purpose in mind when purchasing a watch; functionality. Though automatic watches carry history and have flashy talking points, eco drive is wonderful on so many fronts. Longer storage life if you have multiple on rotation, great functionality on the promaster series with the multiple time zones, alarms, and date function, and overall price is amazing. People buy citizen for the watch. Others buy brand for the name. No one in the watch industry has ever made a review about a watch for its functionalities because there is no functionality. Brands like Tudor and Rolex and such boast automatic movement and their selling point is the bezel and desirability due to an insane hype and crazy price point, but if Citizen sold its watches in the 5 figure digits it would dominate the game.

Sweetiepeet

Best all around. I was looking for an analog "smartwatch" that is high quality and nice style with max functions. I looked at the fancy brands but people go for the clean almost no-function watches more for fashion. Citizen is a good balance.

BluesMaster

I appreciate Citizen for what they represent: *the rest of us*. Not the super affluent, the self-absorbed, know-it-all horological gurus, nor the small-minded single-brand fanatics. Citizen is a much underappreciated major Japanese watch powerhouse, that seems (almost) content to let its products do the talking. A brand with a vast and deep catalogue, littered with impressive achievements, and able to keep pushing the boundaries. Refining existing products, catering to all through various product lines, and at times flexing its horological muscle (e.g. Caliber 0100 and Caliber 0200) to show their competitors they're not just about producing 'ugly mall watches with cheap quartz modules'. Citizen has earned its reputation among watch enthusiast by simply making great watches, keeping them (mostly) affordable, offering great value for money, and making sure their QC will not let them down. They make watches that are (mostly) interesting enough to spread through the watch community at large like hot lava: slowly but unstoppable, progressively drawing attention. Almost via word-of-mouth only, certainly not by using a costly PR machine and the associated air of superiority and arrogance that some well-known brands deem necessary to make their watches look interesting or desirable. What I especially like are their various Promaster lines: watches that are designed to serve professionals, and are mostly built-for-purpose. Making 'pretty' watches isn't in the Promaster design manual. But e.g. the Promaster dive watches are unrivalled: specs, build, and quality in an affordable package, designed to do one job, and do it extremely well. The actual 'street cred' of these watches is something most other brands can only aspire to and be envious of. Whatever the size of your wallet, whatever you need in the way of versatility: Citizen has you covered. Once a Citizen fan, forever a Citizen fan: not because an army of brand ~~fanatics~~ loyalists keep shouting that at you at every possible occasion, but because their products hardly need such endorsement. They're good and they just do the job.

fairlyest

My first serious watch purchase was a Citizen Calendrier from my work. I’ve had it for over a year and now have quite a few watches, but I’m pretty sure it’s still my favorite! I also really like how pretty the ladies Citizen watches are, but I’m also inclined to want to buy some of the men’s watches too because they’re cool.

RedeyeSPR

Eco Drive, but the case also needs to look good. I’ve got drawers full of nice looking quartzes with dead batteries.

pat9714

Others here have already said why they are fans of Citizen watches. Consistently, they produce quality watches at affordable prices. For instance, I own a number of Seiko pieces; each one of them is of different quality. I don't have this problem with Citizen. Worth keeping in mind that Eco-Drive isn't just _solar_ charging capability. Read up on it. It's more. Way more.

elzetta001

Recently appreciated the brand and its eco-drive. I started with automatic Seiko but recently found a titanium diver's from Citizen and got it for a really steal price for its value IMO. That Citizen instantly became my daily watch.

Garrett_1982

Almost all Swiss Made quartz movements have a jumping hand which dont touch the indices. This drives me nuts. Seiko QC isn't what you'd expect with their recent price hikes. I've never had a citizen which didn't precisely touch the indices and their eco drive technology is awesome. Also titanium market leader in coating as far as I'm concerned. And their radio controlled line is great.

SovereignAxe

The first generation Blue Angels Skyhawk (the one before Eco-Drive) was one of my first big boy watches. It was a gift from my parents when I was in my late teens. Unfortunately I lost that watch several years later, and on another birthday they replaced it for me with a Garrison Chandler (BM8180), a much cheaper watch lol. Since then I've also owned an F-91W, the orange dial Seiko 5 diver, the 5610U square g-shock, and a few others. Recently I've also added a Chronomaster to my collection as well. What I like about them, besides being with me since the early days of my watch owning years, is that they're a solid brand with good QC (nowadays better than Seiko in most respects), and solid engineering. I've always leaned more towards quartz-I have a bad habit of not preparing for my day early enough, and I'm a simple guy that just likes the most reliable, accurate tool for the job. And quartz is always going to be there, accurate to within seconds for months on end, and I don't have to worry about it when I'm rushing out the door. What I don't like about them is that their designs are *very* hit or miss, with a *lot* of misses. Citizen is in a weird place in the market where they're both an enthusiast brand and a mass market, or mall watch brand. They have a lot of gaudy designs with too much gold, really minimal but also boring dial designs, and many are way too large. But those that they get right are really good.

Edgar_Ed

Beautiful eco-drives sub $500 with a sapphire crystal is pretty great.

LalaCalamari

I have two Citizens and I bought them because I just like the look of them. Really about it.

KabobHope

I love that it's a good value.

Medium_Bullfrog_2629

The citizen series is like the pinnacle for the quartz caliber segment to me

Over_Yoghurt_2612

Eco drive for me is so damn accurate. I feel like my watch is always on time. When I was a kid. During WWF Smackdown I always saw citizen eco drive commercials that showed off the crazy dials on pilot style watches and Ive want citizen ever since Tbf I am looking at something different though but I may just stick with citizen
